I'm using Gnome on openSUSE 11.2. I can't get rid of the ctrl-alt-d keyboard shortcut in Gnome. I have set it to "disabled" in control center -> keyboard shortcuts, but no luck.
When I run the gnome-keybindings-properties program from the terminal it dumps these two messages onto stderr:
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): keybinding-properties-WARNING **: No description for key '/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/opacity_decrease_key'
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): keybinding-properties-WARNING **: No description for key '/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/opacity_increase_key'
and the following two messages like 20 or so times:
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_store_append: assertion `VALID_ITER (parent, tree_store)' failed
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_store_set_valist: assertion `VALID_ITER (iter, tree_store)' failed
I realize this isn't the most critical problem, but I am experimenting with Guile (scheme as a C extension language) which I am editing in Emacs, and even after reassigning "down-list" I keep hitting C-M-d because it's right by C-M-f which I also use constantly, and this minimizes all my windows! And there is nothing on my desktop, I never use the feature intentionally. Maybe I should get a wallpaper that says "HaHa Dummy!" or something of the sort to at least get a chuckle out of it when it happens.

I have a java program that needs to be launched with root privileges (from an account that doesn't have root privileges) from a desktop shortcut. The command would look something like this: java -jar /file/location/whatever.jar I've searched and searched and can't figure out how to do this. EDIT*** I would like it to pop up and ask for the root password before it launches the application.

I am trying to figure out how to get EPS image support for a Gnome image browser, in particular Eye of Gnome (EOG) -- the default image viewer in Gnome. In Nautilus, thumbnails appear fine for EPS images, but when opening them in Eye of Gnome or gThumb, neither program can open the images. EOG says "unsupported file format", and gThumb shows a blank screen. Apparently both programs can get additional image support, but I can't seem to get it to work.
I have ghostscript updated to the latest version, and I'm using Fedora 10.
Anybody know how to do this?

I asking for an alternative to nautilus. The problem I have with nautilus is that it take up too much screen real estate, the icons are too big, etc. My screen is 1280 x 1024 and I dont plan on going higher.
Any alternative should have the option of using small, smaller icons and when resized keeps the smaller size the next time the file browser window is opened.

I have been trying to active the shortcut <Super>+D to minimize all active windows and show desktop. Compiz is already install on my system, that I have tried all possible combinations of "show desktop" functionality in Compiz and Gnome itself. However, whenever I use the shortcut, it activates(maximize) one window first, and it shows desktop if I use the shortcut second time. Actually same thing happens when I press the "show desktop" button on the panel as well

I suspect this is a Gnome 3 problem and not a Fedora problem, but I have no way to separate the two here. I cannot upload an image from my computer to Weebly or to Google Plus, but strangely enough, I can upload one to Picasa. The sequence of actions goes something like this:
1. Open Weebly editing interface, add a picture element, click on the element to edit/add a picture. It then gives you a choice: from your local computer, from the web, etc.
2. Click on 'from local computer' and my computer opens the Open File Dialog Window.I am guessing that is its name, it is the same window you get when opening a file in any other application, like Gedit or LibreOffice.
3. Navigate to the image I want to upload and double click on it or select 'Open'.
4. Nothing happens.
I am able to upload images from my laptop, running Linux Mint 11 with Gnome 2.
It sounds to me like the Open File Window is not passing on the necessary information to the browser. I have no idea why it works in Picasa and not in Google+ or Weebly.
I don't really expect anyone to have a solution just yet, but I wanted to mention it somewhere, and I didn't see any Gnome.org forums. On the other hand, if someone does have a solution, great.
This is by no means a knock on Gnome 3, it is fine with me and I Iike it a lot more than I thought I would.

I have apache2, sql, php all installed fine on my debian installation. Initially, I installed phpmyadmin via apt-get install phpmyadmin. However, I wanted to upgrade my version of phpMyAdmin to the latest, so uninstalled and deleted it and used subversion to get a later version of phpMyAdmin. I decompressed the file in etc/ and renamed it to phpmyadmin. So now my working copy is located in /etc/phpmyadmin.
The issue: I cannot get phpmyadmin to show up in my web browser in http://MYIP/phpmyadmin. I used echo Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf to get the line in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf, issue is, there IS no apache.conf in the phpmyadmin directory. If I recall correctly, installing phpmyadmin from the debian package has you choose a server before finishing the installation. I obviously did NOT get this prompt as I am installing from source.
Questions: How do I set the server? Is this why /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf is missing? Additionally: I have searched for hours for a solution and found nothing. I tried the phpmyadmin manual installation where you create a conf folder and set the permissions but in the end I could NOT access /phpmyadmin/scripts/setup.php

I was reading about Linux and found out that you can apparently custom build your own operating system.
The thing is, it all sounds great for what I would like to do but my knowledge in that area is zero, or sub-zero.
My question is: is there an operating system out there, that will start up the computer, then have a browser installed on it - lets say Firefox - with a homepage www.example.com?... (no start button or taskbar)
Maybe no toolbars or anything else except the webpage itself.
Also the hardware should be plug and play, such as printers, mobiles scanners or any usb driven devices.

I installed matlab for linux via the installer. When I type into the terminal as normal user:
Code:
matlab
the program starts perfectly fine. I want now a click-able icon on the desktop (KDE3.5). So when I produce the application shortcut, no matter how I do define the command, it will not start. I did put Command: matlab (tried also matlab glnx86) I joined in advanced: start in terminal (but it does not work either) I did join the complete and correct path...... Somehow....I do not understand why it starts from the console in user-mode without problems with the command but not while using a shortcut.

How do I disable the Alt+F8 shortcut combination in Gnome? This shortcut does "resize window". However I don't want Gnome to override that shortcut, I want to be able to use it in IntelliJ. Anyway, the obvious way to disable it, that is, remove it in the "Keyboard Shortcuts" option, does not disable it. Alt+F8 still does the resize window thing. How do I REALLY disable it?

I've been using Ubuntu for years now, and I don't think I've ever seen this problem before. I've given as much relevant detail as I can think of below; On Ubuntu 10.10 (32-bit), I have compiled TOra 2.1.2 from source (obtained from the repo) to enable Oracle support. I need to run it socksified, which works just fine by executing it from the terminal:Code:toxsocks torHowever, a panel shortcut using that exact command doesn't launch anything.I don't think it has to do with the `toxsocks` part, as I have a Firefox launcher using a similar command working perfectly:
Code:
toxsocks firefox -no-remote -P username
And, for the record:

I've recently upgraded a laptop of mine from 10.10 to 11.04 (Natty), and am having a few issues with it. I don't know how many of these are related to using Unity and how many are just due to the upgrade, but one of the main bugbears is keyboard shortcuts. I have always set the F12 key so that it opens a terminal window. I did this through the settings > Keyboard Shortcuts interface, but although I can (apparently) set this in Unity, it doesn't work. The setting is there, listed, but pressing F12 doesn't open a terminal. Neither does it if I set it to any other key.
I can create a new entry, to start xterm with F12, which works fine but this isn't quite the same as a terminal (it appears different on screen.) I also discover that CTRL+ALT+T doesn't open a terminal window either (as is suggested in a very useful list here: [URL] Have I missed something? Or am I being thick? (Quite possible ... )

The upgrade from 11->12 went very smoothly for me on multiple servers except for one seemingly small item that had me tearing my hair out for a few hours. Three of my machines are MythTV frontends, which rarely do anything else. As such, I have them fairly stripped down package-wise and run MythTV on GNOME with xorg-x11-xinit-session to kick it off via an .xsession script. This scheme has worked flawlessly for years across many versions of Fedora until last week when MythTV mysteriously would not start and the computer would just get stuck in an automatic login loop. I discovered that I could start MythTV after I logged into the GNOME desktop and through some testing and log inspection came to realize that it was PulseAudio that was not starting automatically. I also discovered that I could just SSH in while it was in this loop and issue 'pulseaudio -D' and the next automatic login attempt would start MythTV properly.
As a quick hack, I just tossed 'pulseaudio -D;sleep 3' into my .xsession script and it seems to be working for now. I am interested to know how it used to start up without logging into the desktop before the upgrade. Could this possibly be related to udev or dbus? I have practically no knowledge of those, but do see config files for both in the pulseaudio package.

I'm trying to make a panel on the right side of the screen that can be hidden/shown by pressing a shortcut on the top panel. I can probably figure out the hide/show script without a problem, but what I can't seem to figure out is how to keep this panel on the far right side of the screen without it stopping my windows from stretching that far. If I drag it away from one of the sides of the screen, it behaves like a window and I can stretch my windows as far as I want. Is there some way to make it behave like a window, while still staying at the far right? I don't want to use auto-hide, because not only will it pop up when I don't want it to, but it will make it more difficult to use with the touch screen.

I use ctrl + shift + s to launch synaptic in KDE. That works wonderful and it is standardized on all my systems. I want to define the same in gnome, so that it does not matter if I'm in gnome or KDE.Where can I do this? Now before you start mentioning, I am familiar with keyboard launchers like launchy or gnome do (but have to admit that I don't know that much what gnome do does in all extents), so I am not looking for a program that launches an app after typing a few letters. I want exactly that keyboard combination, everything else will not do it.
I just mention that, because it happens all the time that I see in my posts that I ask:
How can I do B with Y? I don't want to use Z. (specifically asking the question) and then hear as an answer: you can do B with Z!And I am always tempted to answer: That is not what I asked, I asked something specific and got an answer that does not concern it.
