Today I tried to change show desktop shortcut with Win+D from Ctrl+Alt+D. But now i'm unable use neither of 2 shortcuts. how to restore the previous short cut or how to create new one(win+D)
View 2 RepliesI have been trying to active the shortcut <Super>+D to minimize all active windows and show desktop. Compiz is already install on my system,that I have tried all possible combinations of "show desktop" functionality in Compiz and Gnome itself. However, whenever I use the shortcut, it activates(maximize) one window first, and it shows desktop if I use the shortcut second time. Actually same thing happens when I press the "show desktop" button on the panel as well

I'm using Gnome on openSUSE 11.2. I can't get rid of the ctrl-alt-d keyboard shortcut in Gnome. I have set it to "disabled" in control center -> keyboard shortcuts, but no luck.
When I run the gnome-keybindings-properties program from the terminal it dumps these two messages onto stderr:
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): keybinding-properties-WARNING **: No description for key '/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/opacity_decrease_key'

I realize this isn't the most critical problem, but I am experimenting with Guile (scheme as a C extension language) which I am editing in Emacs, and even after reassigning "down-list" I keep hitting C-M-d because it's right by C-M-f which I also use constantly, and this minimizes all my windows! And there is nothing on my desktop, I never use the feature intentionally. Maybe I should get a wallpaper that says "HaHa Dummy!" or something of the sort to at least get a chuckle out of it when it happens.
Is there a way in SuSE 11.1 to have the conventional desktop, instead the plasma desktop? I thought that installing KDE 3.5 will fix it, but I was wrong. I really don't want to download back SuSE 11.0, just to have my old desktop layout. SuSE developers should at least leave it as an option than to force people to install it
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed OpenSUSE 11.3, it had this nice shortcut panel in the left-centre of the screen displaying shortcuts to Firefox,My Computer, OpenOffice & a few others. Somehow I knocked this entire panel off the screen & I don't know what I clicked on in the desktop area but I think it was either the 'Add Widgets' or 'Remove this Panel'. Either way, does anyone know how to restore it as it was really handy and if yes, would you also know how to add more shortcuts onto it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed opera10 and I can start it from a shell script from the opera folder but when i try to make a desktop shortcut it does not work. Either from xfce or by right clicking and choosing to send it to the desktop as a shortcut.
I did not install opera system wide, only under one user. Do I need to set some kind of path or link or something?
using eclipse Galileo on top of Ubuntu 9.10. Normally I launch eclipse by using terminal but I would like to know way to create desktop short cut to launch eclipse. So I tried accessing the Trash folder using cd. I cd into ~/.local/share then try the following command.cd Trash I get this message. bash: cd: Trash: No such file or directory When I type ls in the share folder I get the following.
gsettings-data-convert gvfs-metadata Trash
So the trash folder is in there but i can't access it. Why? Also I want a computer shortcut in my desktop like in windows where I can access all the folders from.
When ctrl alt d or the icon on the bottom left corner is pressed, it sometimes doesn't show the desktop and instead restores hidden windows. Is there a way to access the desktop directly, without only one shortcut ? I was also wondering how useful are these hidden windows (sometimes, the icon in the application bar is bar after being idle for a while).

Rebooting did not solve the situation. Never had this happen before in over twenty years.Is there a way to restore the previous desktop or do I need to reconfigure everything?

I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...
I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.
First my setup: Hardware Genuine AMD Athlon - 512 mg Mem - Nvida card & latest drivers - 80gb & 40gb drives - dvd read only & cdrw.
OS: Ubuntu 10.04 - tried standard desktop then the alt version now back to standard desktop.
Problem: Both optical drives recognise data disks and show them on the desktop. The dvd drive recognises any dvd and not only shows it on the desktop but also flashes up a requester box asking me which program I would like to use to play it. Nothing happens when I insert a music cd in either drive. Rhythm Box Music Player does not show a music cd available to play but does however show my iTouch when I connect it via usb. Btw iTouch is shown on the desktop when connected. What have I done: Fstab had no entries for either drive so I've researched and entered a line for each.The dvd fs is entered as iso9660,udf. The cdrw is using "proc" as a file system as it's the only thing that will show as mounted in Mtab. All else fails. Both drives show up in System/Administration/Disk Utility (irrespective of Fstab entries), therefore the system can see them. Also investigating through the Terminal shows both drives. how to listen to music cds on ubuntu 10.04. I wish to save my music then upload the same to my iTouch. It all worked so well in 8.04.
I installed kubuntu few days back. By clicking blindly I lost my desktop - I mean it is working fine but there are no icons on the desktop and there is no task bar with list of programs.

I have set up a server running ubuntu desktop, and I'm able to logon through remote desktop (win 7). The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. Is there some setting I have missed to be able to see the same from any computer (logon through remote desktop).

But attempting to run from a desktop launcher, it doesn't work, with the command line:

I have also attempted to create a shell script, from which to launch via desktop launcher:

This should be simple, but I just don't see it. KDE 4 desktopI have an application located in /usr/Kompozer that I'd like to add a shortcut to on my desktop. It's not on the menu. Runs fine from the command line. Right clicking on desktop doesn't seem to have what I need. I tried using Dolphin file manager, but still no joy. Can copy, but again can't paste a shortcut on the desktop... or so it seems.

the program starts perfectly fine. I want now a click-able icon on the desktop (KDE3.5). So when I produce the application shortcut, no matter how I do define the command, it will not start. I did put Command: matlab (tried also matlab glnx86) I joined in advanced: start in terminal (but it does not work either) I did join the complete and correct path...... Somehow....I do not understand why it starts from the console in user-mode without problems with the command but not while using a shortcut.
I'm having this problem when i want to delete an icon on my desktop.The icon won't allow me to delete it as it will show error "The specified location is not supported. I attached a screenshot of my desktop. The file that i want to delete is "g on 192.168.0.182.volume". It was a link to my shared network.I've tried delete via terminal but when i viewed my desktop using "ls -a" , the file didn't show up.Or maybe easy solution is my removing my gnome-desktop

I thought this was just the same thing as a shortcut but when I run some programs from the folder they do not work correctly. And when I changed what to open it with to Rekonq, I just got an error page in Rekonq!
