A few months back I reinstalled 11.3 (KDE) over a broken version of 11.3 (kde) the new installation did not allow kde to start. Instead I got a blank screen with a terminal window in the top left corner. If I try " startx " I get the following-
xauth: file /home/fran/.serverauth.2973 does not exist
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
if this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again
xinit: XIO: fatal IO error 11 (resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"
connection to X server lost after 7 requests (7 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
Removing .X0-lock did not help so at the time I resorted to running gnome untill 11.4 came out. needless to say I have now installed 11.4 and still have the same result IE no KDE .
I installed matlab for linux via the installer. When I type into the terminal as normal user:
Code:
matlab
the program starts perfectly fine. I want now a click-able icon on the desktop (KDE3.5). So when I produce the application shortcut, no matter how I do define the command, it will not start. I did put Command: matlab (tried also matlab glnx86) I joined in advanced: start in terminal (but it does not work either) I did join the complete and correct path...... Somehow....I do not understand why it starts from the console in user-mode without problems with the command but not while using a shortcut.
I was messing around with a few software install packages when I stumbled on a nvidia package for Geforce. I installed it and then later decided I didn't need it. I uninstalled it and when I booted my computer up some time later, my desktop would not load. Only in fail safe boot option do I get a desktop. Other wise It goes to command shell.I tried startxResult:
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.3298 X.org X server 1.8.0 Release date: 2010-04-02
My laptop is a Core 2 Centrino and i installed OpenSUSE 11.3 i586 on it recently. I tried to install the graphic card's driver using this instruction:ATI Installer HOWTO for openSUSE usersafter installation was done, i restarted the system but during the boot, where the openSUSE appears, the screen went black and nothing happened afterward untill i turned of the system manually.i tried again and same result, so i logged in with failsafe and un-installed those packages, now the system boots successfully, but it boots to the terminal instead of the desktop. i might have removed the X server package or something important.now that i have access to terminal and i can log in, i thought i can do something with it and solve it this way rather than re-installing the whole OS.he graphic card is :ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570, if anyone knows how to the driver for this card, please let me know how to.

I have installed Opensuse 11.4 and the desktop won't start i get an green striped screen, i have tried to run yast but it seems mine NVIDIA isn't correct installed.
I have an NVidia SE6150 Graphic Card and i have tried to configure the startup parameter vga=0x317, i have changed this to vga=0 to get vesa mode but that doesn't work, i have an wide screen monitor that supports 24 bit and 1360x768.
Have recently tried to start ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop, but as I reboot my computer kubuntu only shows the terminal after the login and I cant get my desktop back.
I have a CentOS 5 machine here, running Gnome. It has the proprietary ati screen driver, driving twin monitors in Xinerama. I have it set to auto-login as me. It has worked fine for ages.
This morning when I booted it up, instead of getting my usual desktop, I got 2 completely black screens, with an X-shaped mouse cursor. The cursor will move between the two screens OK, so I guess X has started, but I have no display manager. Or something. I have never really understood how X starts up, so I am now at a total loss as to how to find out what is wrong, and fix it. I can get to a login prompt by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2, but I'm not sure which files to mess with when I get there. I have studied the X log in /var/log/messages, but there are no errors in there.
I have just installed Debian Sqeeze with xfce4 desktop and when i boot, i just get a terminal prompt ... and so i have to manually type startxfce to start the desktop ...
I have access to my linux home server , through ssh
I wanna start using now remote desktop , so i can connect to my home server through vnc.
I've tried this old post here , but I could not connect
What I did was to ssh with putty (and Xming) and X11 forwarding on , to start vino-preferences , which seemed to work BUT even though I connect with vnc to my remote server , all I see is grey stripes....
PS I have forwarded port 5500,5800 and 5900 to my home server pc of course
I think I messed up some permissions needed to run desktop couch.i follwed the instructions here for restarting, but did not read them carefully, and when the processes were not found, I ran the kill commands as root. Since then, desktop couch will not start. I tried a full purge/reinstall, but still no luck. I filed a bug report here, but I don't think anyone has read it yet. I am guessing running things as root reset some permissions somewhere, but I don't know where.
I've recently updated to Ubuntu 10.10. At first I had no problems, but after the third time I logged in, my desktop background appeared (and nothing else) but quickly flashed to a black screen with some error messages (too fast for me to see) and I got sent to the login screen. After trying some more times I got the same problem with some small differences(sometimes my desktop icons showed up, other times it took a couple of minutes before I got kicked out).
I tried running startx from the terminal but got one of these two error messages: Server already running or could not find any listening ports. If I run "sudo startx -- :1" to switch the port I login fine, but as the root user. Gnome works perfectly here and when I login in gnome-failsafe. This leads to believe it has something to do with my user configuration. I've restarted xorg server, installed gnome-main-menu and made sure if got the current gnome package.
I installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.
I am running openSUSE 11.1 + KDE 4.2.I wonder where is the desktop button, which minimized all currently opened applications and brings you back to the desktop?
Please could someone let me know how or what do I need to insert to the control panel?
Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.
I just bought a new Acer desktop, installed Fedora 10. No problem getting into run level 3 but if I try to start X I get the following at the bottom of the message
Fatal server error no screens found xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to x server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error
I have dug around the internet to see what might be wrong. There are some articles from years ago but to be honest some of it is beyond me.
From my system #lspci 01:00.0 VGA compatable controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 771/671 PCIA VGA Display Adapter (rev 10)
This is a new install of fedora 11 with Neville NewGuy at the controls. I cannot start Firefox from the desktop. Nothing happens (at all, nada, nix, zilch). When I run Firefox in a TermSess as su i get the following warning:
(firefox:3168): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported.
and a GUI error box An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Firefox. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.
Followed by these details Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)
But Firefox starts OK. I checked the URL specified and then made sure the nfslock service was started but I can't find a gconf service (should I have found it??).
After power off the Gnome desktop environment does not start on my machine. It never gets past the splash screen with Fedora logo. The OS boots, and I can ssh and even run graphical applications, such as Thunderbird, remotely. No errors are reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. There are errors reported in .xsession-errors (attached) but I do not now how to recover from them
I download the new version of teamspeak since using the synapitcs install me an older version. my problem is to start the new teamspeak I have to go to the console and type ./starterscript_of_teamspeak Is there anyway to put a botton icon to make me this instead using the console to start it ?
Although I have been using Ubuntu for a while, I am still a beginner. This is the second time that it has happened to me and I am unable to find a possible solution in my books on Linux and Ubuntu.Twice I have downloaded updates from Update Manager which required a reboot. Each time I have rebooted, terminal window has opened. I am unable to get out of terminal to the desktop or to enter any other program ( like office, etc). I know that the graphics are still in place as The Ubuntu 10.10 screen flashes on before the terminal black screen appears.(I am in runlevel 2 )A. How can I get out of terminal and onto desktop?
