OpenSUSE :: 11.4 - White Glare Around Fonts Causing Eye Strain
May 30, 2011
I am using openSUSE 11.4 with this monitor [URL]. I use this PC mainly as a HTPC and also for internet surfing, checking email ....etc.
- One problem that I have been facing since I migrated from CRT to LCD is difficulty in reading small
- Fonts that you cant zoom. Like for example the fonts on the dialog boxes or menus of some
- Applications. I see a kind of white glare surrounding the fonts making it "hazy" & therefore causing difficulty in reading.
Is there a way to improve the situation?

I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.
I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

Even thought my Westel Model 7500 has the appropriate green lines (Power, Wireless, DSL, Internet), it always takes my Ubuntu 9.04, Dell Inspiron 1545n considerable effort to connect to the wireless network. I have 11.4 with kde 4.6, all up to date via YAST. Radeon driver, legacy ATI display hardware. LibreOffice is latest from the Stable:11.4 repo.
When I open LO, it causes the desktop to break up - diagonal stripes of blocks, and garbage (offset blocks) form all mouse movements from there until kdm restarted.
I restart by switching to F1 console, init 3, the init 5 as root. I can't seem to find any useful messages or logs.

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 x64 as a fresh full-install last week. Seems to be running great, up until the last couple days when I installed AVG. Every time I do a avgscan, it runs for 20 to 60 min, and then causes the PC to reboot. The only thing I can find is the following event in the /var/log/messages:
Code:
May 1 11:45:01 linuxbox sntp[7653]: Started sntp
May 1 11:45:59 linuxbox kernel: [38429.349995] iTCO_wdt: Unexpected close, not stopping watchdog!
May 1 11:46:00 linuxbox kernel: [38430.111688] PM: Marking nosave pages: 000000000009d000 - 0000000000100000
[Code].....
I get this result every time I try to do a virus scan. I also have seen this result once when doing a large scp transfer from another Suse box. The AVG log just terminates and gives no warnings as to what's going wrong.
Are there any other logs I can check out to try to troubleshoot this further???

I've been having trouble lately with firefox freezing. For awhile I couldn't figure out what was causing it as it seemed random. But I think I narrowed down the problem to the mplayer plugin. Whenever I go to a site that has streaming video, the mplayer plugin would start reading the stream, but then display "stopped". Now sometimes when it does this firefox would freeze, but sometimes it wouldn't freeze till I start mousing over my bookmark tabs, then it would freeze my entire desktop. I can move my mouse but not much else. I can do a ctrl-alt-backspace to reload the xserver. Has anyone else noticed this? Also, can some help me troubleshoot this. I've removed and then re-installed firefox and the myplayer plugin; deleted my .mozilla directory; changed profiles. Is there anything else I can do?
Here are the package details:
Code:
Repository: @System
Name: MozillaFirefox
Version: 3.6.15-0.2.2
Arch: x86_64

i've been able to narrow down a freezing issue on my laptop, down to NetworkManager when i have a cifs share mounted in fstab.removing the cifs mount, or using 'ifup' method appears to fix the issue.the problem is when my laptop resumes from sleep, and when using NetworkManager with cifs share, then i get a 20second freeze when using the launcher while the network sorts itself out. this happens on either wifi or wired connections. this freeze only occurs when using the Launcher for the first time after resume. if i dont use the launcher then everything is fine untill i do (ie: i have network access and desktop shortcuts work fine)

I'm having a few problems with XOrg freezing while playing World of Goo (not the worlds most intense game for graphics, but seemingly too much for my rig). I initially posted on the developer's forums, but they said a full X freeze wouldn't be the game. Testing with BZFlag got me a full Xorg freeze even quicker than with WoG. Later I even tried glxgears to see how well it ran and even that froze the system! My only way of recovering is SysReq-REISUB.
Specs/system details:
2.4GHz Core 2 Duo (E6600)
2GB RAM
Radeon X1950XTX using the open source drivers
openSUSE 11.2 (64-bit - patched up to date and without an xorg.conf)
[code].....
So, is there a fix for the huge instability with 3D graphics, or am I stuck between a rock and a hard place with the options of outdated official drivers that may not work with the latest kernels (and would need manually rebuilding even if they did) or flakey open drivers that are guaranteed to freeze at some point, it is just a matter of when?

Most of the issues involve disconnect after a login and mouse settings. It does work fine for me, but after a few days of being up and using vnc on and off it will still connect, but show the black/white mesh screen with the big black X cursor, then if I wait 30 seconds it disconnects.
Heres the log when this problem starts happening
If I restart the computer it works again, however this message is still shown in the logs:
So I guess the above message is trivial to the problem? The thing is, I am not using KDE4, I installed 3.5, and in sysconfig my display manager is set to KDM not KDM4.
I'm using VNC through remote administration, multiple users will be accessing this from the network and need to get to the login screen.

I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?

I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?

My GTK setup has started to behave strangely - I believe since upgrading to FF 6 . The FF search bar, the Gimp menu and other similar controls are now decorated with a transparent white outline. I do not have any customizations applied and I am unsure how to fix it. Running OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit, GTK 2.22.1, Gnome 2.32.1.

After installing the Nvidia driver I get black and white boxes displayed during KDE login. After logging in the graphics are normal. I tried installing the nvidia driver from the opensuse repository and manual installation of the latest stable driver. I do not have this problem when I use Kubuntu so I don't think it's a hardware problem.

Just installed OpenSuse 11.4 successfully on my machine (E-machines T6212). Previously attempted to install Ubuntu 11.4 on it as well. Both OS have resulted in my computer screen turning white with blue lines and the entire system freezing; unresponsive to keystrokes and even keyboard CAPS/NUM lights don't respond. Only way I can get system to come back is to physcially unplug it, not even power it off with Power button.
I believe there is something with my graphics card that may be the culprit; ATI Radeon™ Xpress 200M - ATI Radeon™ Xpress 200M Specifications
Because for both OpenSuse and Ubuntu this problem came up.
However with OpenSuse I am able to get to the Terminal Screen via : 1- On startup typing '3' into the screen and getting into 'grub' I think it is called.
I am not able to GUI.
I have read: Configuring Graphics Forum Page l in the forums here as well as looked into the Radeon page for the drivers.
I have also found the following thread here dealing with my particular graphics card but :
1-In my 'xorg.conf.new' file in my /root the correct driver "radeon" seems to be listed.
2-I added "radeon" to my 50-device.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg-conf.d/.. directory

This is the 2nd time this has happened. I installed 11.1 & 11.2 later. After the install I would get the login screen just fine and then when it starts running everything goes white. It is an issue with compiz and my graphics I assume. The interesting part is in opensuse 11.0 I had all compiz items not installed. When I installed 11.1 & 11.2 they reinstalled. For next time is there a way to not have these installed on the install? What I had to do was login in a different session other than Gnome. Then go into yast and remove compiz. Then logout and log back in with gnome and the white screen is gone.

The link to the screenshot below is an example of what I am referring to in the thread title:
Screenshot of Aptana Studio 2.0 (on KDE)
As you can see there is a white block under the window title that appears on the toolbar of Aptana Studio 2.0.
This also happens on other programs such as PgAdminIII.

Well I've been trying to get suse 11.x up on antec media center and run mythtv on top of the platform. Only one thing "partially" missing is the sound. I hope that I'm not annoying anybody by posting this on the wrong site but hopefully somebody will give my directions on that or if there are something that I forgot to mention. I'm lost here and I hope somebody has the same problem and a solution to this problem ! Problem. Mythtv, xawtv and tvtime all display picture close to 100%. Sound start as 100% ok but after 30s - 100s gets lot of white noise in it.

I don't get any error messages or dmesg on this so nothing there.

Just updated to OpenSuSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6
Code:
When I print to my HP LaserJet 1020 - which has worked fine since OpenSuSe 10.x to OpenSuse 11.3, any images print inverted.
For example, what is white in the image is printed black, and what is black in the image is printed white. When printing a document from LibreOffice, text on the same page as the image prints correctly.
I've checked that this is happening when printing images from LibreOffice, Okular, and Gimp, and tried it with PNG, TIF, and GIF image formats.
However, when I open HPLIP and send a test print through, it prints correctly - text and images all normal.

Main problem: newly installed Suse 11.2/Gnome from DVD i586 goes to white screen after auto login. I re-installed once with same results. I have limited understanding of linux.
System: Biostar M7NCD Ultra mainboard with NForce Ultra 400 chipset, AMD Barton 2500 (overclocked), GForce FX5200 NVIDEA video.
FYI: I used this exact video card on an older mainboard and ran linux with it no problem and all hardware checks out okay when I drop in a HD with XPpro on it, which makes this a linux software problem by my reckoning - video setup most likely. I can boot to the green Startup Options screen and then my ignorance starts to show.
I wanted to boot to level 3 then try some things (init 3, sax2 -r) I've read about on this forum and from www search but I'm password blocked in level 3!? Install only asked me for one password and it doesn't work here.
How do I deal with the level 3 password issue?

I'm trying to use the windows fonts on my linux machine. I've found a nice tutorial which suggests to change the dpi to 96x96 (windows default).
It seems that i'm not able to change the dpi. I've tried with sax2 => no luck. Manually editing the xorg.conf file => no luck. My dpi remain always the same. I've logged out even rebooted. Same.
# xdpyinfo | grep dimen
dimensions: 1600x900 pixels (443x249 millimeters)
# xdpyinfo | grep resol
resolution: 92x92 dots per inch
I've changed the dimensions to 423x238 mm. I should get a 96x96 dpi with these but no. After restarting, xdpyinfo shows the same old settings.
