OpenSUSE :: 11.3 Crashed 5 Times) Within 25 Minutes?
Oct 31, 2010
i just installed 11.3 from live cd--after a recent update basically wiped my whole 11.2 setup into oblivion...i want to say that i like 11.3 better, however, i have not had a chance to even use it.......after installation, and then updating and adding repos, i tried to install a couple programs through yast. on the three occasions of trying, the computer crashed--screen goes blank, the CAP/NUM lock lights flash on and off...i tried to install adobe reader from their site two times, and the same thing happened twice--screen goes blank, the CAP/NUM lock lights flash on and off.i'm just beginning to get my computer back in order, after my 11.2 died.and since installing 11.3, i can even begin to begin!

I installed 10.04 today and so far it has crashed a lot of times.It's not so much of a crash but, the screen goes blank, the top half of the screen keeps flashing with white and black lines hanging vertically.I can't do anything when this happens, I just have to press the tower, and it brings me down to the shutdown screen.

My 5.5 server has crashed on my multiple times over the past few weeks. I have 2 terabyte drives mirrored.It automatically reboots and seems to run fine after rebooting.I've attached a copy of the /var/log/message to this post.I was unable to paste file.I'm not if a bad disk is causing the problem or not.

I have just installed (after a series of crashes during the install) Fedora 15. I also have Ubuntu Natty installed and use it primarily but I wanted to reach out and try new distros.I've wanted to try Fedora and finally got enough nerve to try. Installing it crashed for no apparent reason several times.ehow it installed and booted right to Fedora.However, when finally figuring out how to run the updates, I began to have the same problem.(Someone elsewhere suggested trying to update through command line--which I did finally though I had a few crashes doing this).
Now I am logging in and then it will just inadvertently crash. I could be in firefox, or using terminal, etc. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to why this is happening and I feel frustrated. I really want to test out Fedora (it looks so nice!) but can't manage to stay afloat more than a few minutes. I might also mention that this does not happen in Ubuntu at all so I can't account for the issues. I have much to learn but I feel a bit intimidated by Fedora because it's so new to me.

I want to know what other people have done to stop their computers from crashing. My main computer has now crashed 5 times in the last hour and a half.
I am not using Compiz, and to the best of my knowledge it is uninstalled. I try not to use flash with the internet. I am using the 64 bit version of 10.04, because I want to make use of my 8GB of RAM.
The computer crashes constantly. Constantly. Usually when I am using it. I can leave it on for days without a problem; but as soon as I need to get work done, it starts crashing.
Some specs:
ASUS P7P55D Pro motherboard
Intel i5-750 processor.
evga GTS 250 video card with NVIDIA drivers (uptodate)
8GB RAM
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
I need a gameplan to make this computer stop crashing. how to start diagnosing the causes of these crashes.

I've a very annoying(and strange) problem with hibernation. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10.
It's been a month and the hibernation works exactly in the following pattern:
success->fail->success->fail->......
By success, I mean the machine hibernates OK and wake up exactly as before hibernation.
By fail, I mean the machine go to sleep and when wake up, all applications are gone and the login screen is displayed. I think gnome desktop has crashed in such cases.

I have been having trouble with Ubuntu 11.04 when connecting to the Internet via Wireless Networking. It will connect, and has good speed once it connects, however it takes upward of 10 minutes and over 20 times of me clicking 'Connect'.
Is there a way to connect to a wireless network quicker? My network is unsecured and without a keyring. It is not only slow connecting to my network, but the network of other's.

I'm using mencoder to capture audio from a Encore ENLTV-FM3 video capture device. I have recently noticed that, since one week ago, when the machine was forcibly restarted due to a power outage, all recordings are slightly pitched, they play back slower than they should.
I narrowed down the problem to the following command line:
$ time mencoder -really-quiet -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video1:chanlist=us-cable:audiorate=32000:alsa:adevice=hw.1:input=0:amode=1:normid=11 -endpos 00:10:00 -ovc copy -oac pcm -of rawaudio -o test-32000.wav tv://69
real 9m54.886s
user 0m5.536s
sys 0m1.740s
$ ls -l test-32000.wav
-rw-r--r--@ 1 martin martin 76800000 Mar 15 17:20 test-32000.wav
Somehow, mencode managed to gather precisely 10 minutes worth of raw audio in 9m 55s. That's not physically possible, unless the capture device's A/D converters are "overclocked". I can't think of any other explanation besides hardware failure. Can that be? Could it be that something got burnt during the power outage and now the capture device's internal clock went nuts?
Since the machine's restart, I've also noticed dmesg is flooded with entries like this:
CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to XXX nsec
Which seem to indicate that the computer's high precision event timer is somehow out of sync. Does this have to do with the audio issue? Can it be that the audio converter's sample rate is linked to the HPET? I'm totally lost here. Has anyone bumped into something similar?

I've upgraded(?) to TB3.1 from the Mozilla repo and instead of a single panel for the password, I get at least 3. The record so far is 6! Going back to 3.0.5 returns to a single panel. I need to stick with 3.1 as a parallel upgrade to Lightning 1.0b2 means 1.0b1 will not work. How to get back to a single password entry?

I'm facing some issues with mounting the cd and usb stick in Gnome: once the hotplug device is discovered Gnome displays multiple lot (5+) notification windows (i.e asking about the opening application) and also causing Dbus errors like: "DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending".
Ubuntu just mounts once, no issues like mentioned above. This is standard 11.3 installation, where should I look for the cause?

I have a problem with burning some disks. I believe the problem to be when the file sizes are large. using suse 11.3 x 64 and updates done. k3b version 2.0.1-1pm 2.7 burned normal dvd yesterday with3.5 Gb + 1.5Gb files. Tried burning to BD-R disk with 11.5 Gb file. I have burned blu ray disks before with my machine but used nero, I would prefer to use k3b as should do this. I get error of mkisofs crashed and following error log

I'm running 10.3, KDE, 32bit. I am working with a fresh install. The updater stated that I had updates , I accepted the updates. At this point the updater failed in some way. It did not become a zombi but stalled. I quit the updater. Now when I try and get online updates using the sys tray updater it sais none available. When I use yast online update it has some recommended updates but does not install them. I rebuilt the rpm data base and this did not help.
How can I "reset" the updater. I believe that it thinks that it did go thru the updates and therefor cant see that they still need attention.

I have a strange effect here, where konqueror is started multiple times. It is no problem to start it from the K-Menu. But konqueror seems to be associated with different actions in applications, e.g. many "help" entries; among others e.g. Inkscape: "Hilfe/Inkscape Handbuch" (~ Help/Inkscape handbook") If I'm unfortunate enough to hit such an item, the konqueror items start flooding my task bar, while the mouse cursor - changed to the konqueror icon - is flickering like wild, while konqueror is starting again and again. None of the windows really open and all icons disappear after some time. (due to some resource overflow, but unfortunately I can't find the relevant log entry this time) How can I prevent this ? (Or debug this, if the cause is unclear)

Since the last Versions of openSUSE 11.3 and now with openSUSE 11.4 with KR46, I've a blocking system sometimes with all memory used (especially swap). KDE Hangs only the mouse works. The Harddisk is 100% used (HDD LED is always on). This blocking is about 5 minutes and 30 minutes. In this time only very minimum work is going on. If I switch with <ctrl>+<shift>+<F2> to the tty, a lock in needs 3 times (the password request is after the time out). top shows only 5% load with "gam_server" (first or secound entry -> most system load).

I'm using opensuse 11.4 64 bits on an amd 3 kernel. One day it's working fine and the following i't works all fine except konqueror and dolphin. When i try to open them it seem to be frozen (the application, not the system), but in the end they open after 3-4 minutes. Then they work well, but if i close them and open again, or if i open another window I have the same problem. Othe applications (for example firefox) launch quickly.

I have the problem (11.3) that the screen is blanked after 10 minutes (console and KDE). After some searching, I found out, it is a kernel "feature". Since it is a server, which should display network status permanently on screen this behavior is fatal.
I have tried:
- switch of power features vie Grub kernel param: apm=off, powersaved=off
- in kde via screensaver options
- in term "setterm -blank 0"

i wonder if you can modify KDE so that users can only log in once with one session.Currently, with KDE 4.5, i have the problem that user can log in several times and then ending up with an application used in a different session which means that you can not use it in the other session.

I'v downloaded the new versions of suse many times. I average 3 to 4+ times before it's successful, bad downloads(bad checksum) or download stops for no reason. I'v used direct link and bittorrent. Bittorrent takes 2-3 times as long. So, I usually use direct link. I can do the download in about 6-8 hours. The first time, it stopped at 334 megs, using direct link. Using bittorrent, it took about 16 hours. I got a bad checksum. Is there a way I fix the file without downloading it again? Suse 10.4

when I move the mouse to the top left it shows the 4 desktops. But I have switched it to 2 desktops, plus I also undid the screen edge section in personnel settings. How do I turn this ANNOYING feature off, as I have the tradition menu there & makes life difficult. It locks the desktop to reenter the password after 5 minutes. I turned the screen-saver off & unchecked the lock desktop setting in there also. I tried to search for these, but ever time I did it would tell me it was to generic of a search.

Since two week the knetworkmanager needs 3 minutes after login to start and connect. On an other computer (x86) it works fine. What could be the reason for this? I use opensuse 11.3 x64 and yes i need the network manager. Ifup isn't practicable for me.I have read in some thread to start the networkmanager at boot time and as root, but i don't think this is necessary.

When downloading a torrent after a few minutes my connection speed stops. Browser also. Same problem with Ktorrent and Deluge. The only way to solve the problem is to reconnect to my WLAN. I use a TP Link WR841N wireless router and a Toshiba satellite pro. The same setup is OK with windows and ubuntu 11.04 alpha3.
