Ubuntu :: Odd Times, Desktop Crashed When Wake Up From Hibernation
Feb 6, 2011
I've a very annoying(and strange) problem with hibernation. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10.
It's been a month and the hibernation works exactly in the following pattern:
success->fail->success->fail->......
By success, I mean the machine hibernates OK and wake up exactly as before hibernation.
By fail, I mean the machine go to sleep and when wake up, all applications are gone and the login screen is displayed. I think gnome desktop has crashed in such cases.

I'm running 9.10, how do I wake up from sleep or hibernation on my Dell XPS notebook? I have no problem putting the comp to sleep/hiber but can't seem to work out the keys to wake it up again.
I don't get any responses from the keys even when I try CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK, so all I can do is reach for the on/off switch.

I made a hibernation on my laptop.(Suspend to disk) After I tried to wake up, boot screen appeared, then a splash screen with loading bar. After the bar reached 100%, nothing happens. It hangs, no keys are working. Just a splash screen with gecko and 100% loaded bar.

Is there a config file to toggle whether the screen is locked after hibernation? I looked all over preferences but if it's there, I missed it. In Ubuntu, the screen was always locked after waking up. In Squeeze, it's going directly to desktop. It's not a biggie but you never know when someone might try to access your account so I kind of liked that it would wake up locked. Maybe it's doing that because I'm the only user on the system?

I installed 10.04 today and so far it has crashed a lot of times. It's not so much of a crash but, the screen goes blank, the top half of the screen keeps flashing with white and black lines hanging vertically.I can't do anything when this happens, I just have to press the tower, and it brings me down to the shutdown screen.

i just installed 11.3 from live cd--after a recent update basically wiped my whole 11.2 setup into oblivion...i want to say that i like 11.3 better, however, i have not had a chance to even use it.......after installation, and then updating and adding repos, i tried to install a couple programs through yast. on the three occasions of trying, the computer crashed--screen goes blank, the CAP/NUM lock lights flash on and off...i tried to install adobe reader from their site two times, and the same thing happened twice--screen goes blank, the CAP/NUM lock lights flash on and off.i'm just beginning to get my computer back in order, after my 11.2 died.and since installing 11.3, i can even begin to begin!

I want to know what other people have done to stop their computers from crashing. My main computer has now crashed 5 times in the last hour and a half.
I am not using Compiz, and to the best of my knowledge it is uninstalled. I try not to use flash with the internet. I am using the 64 bit version of 10.04, because I want to make use of my 8GB of RAM.
The computer crashes constantly. Constantly. Usually when I am using it. I can leave it on for days without a problem; but as soon as I need to get work done, it starts crashing.
Some specs:
ASUS P7P55D Pro motherboard
Intel i5-750 processor.
evga GTS 250 video card with NVIDIA drivers (uptodate)
8GB RAM
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
I need a gameplan to make this computer stop crashing. how to start diagnosing the causes of these crashes.

I have 2 terabyte drives mirrored. It automatically reboots and seems to run fine after rebooting.I've attached a copy of the /var/log/message to this post.I was unable to paste file.I'm not if a bad disk is causing the problem or not.

I have just installed (after a series of crashes during the install) Fedora 15. I also have Ubuntu Natty installed and use it primarily but I wanted to reach out and try new distros.I've wanted to try Fedora and finally got enough nerve to try. Installing it crashed for no apparent reason several times.ehow it installed and booted right to Fedora. However, when finally figuring out how to run the updates, I began to have the same problem.(Someone elsewhere suggested trying to update through command line--which I did finally though I had a few crashes doing this).
Now I am logging in and then it will just inadvertently crash. I could be in firefox, or using terminal, etc. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to why this is happening and I feel frustrated. I really want to test out Fedora (it looks so nice!) but can't manage to stay afloat more than a few minutes. I might also mention that this does not happen in Ubuntu at all so I can't account for the issues. I have much to learn but I feel a bit intimidated by Fedora because it's so new to me.

EVERY SINGLE TIME when I try to close the Nautilus File Browser (ie when I go to my Documents folder), the desktop flashes all the icons on the desktop a couple of times (for a sec you would see no icons on the desktop) before everything goes back to normal.

I am trying to make my computer to wake from suspend by either pressing a key or clicking the mouse. (It doesn't by default.) I have a Logitech EX100 Cordless Desktop. I tried enabling USB1 (the port the receiver is plugged into) in /proc/acpi/wakeup, but now the computer wakes up instantly when I try to put it to sleep. Anyone know how to make it stay asleep, and then wake up when I either click the mouse or press a key?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 which was upgrade from a 9.x install. I never had this problem on my 9.x install, but since the "upgrade" I experience my desktop freezing. I'm not exactly sure how to troubleshoot this.In looking at /var/log/messages the last entries I see before me having to a hard reboot are:
Code:

Sep 27 19:27:07 gingerk sudo: pam_sm_authenticate: /home/me is already mounted

Wrong prefix, its Ubuntu not Lubuntu. Three devices:
Laptop 1:
---Can ssh to any device.
---Accepts any internal ssh.
Desktop 1:
---Can ssh to any device.
---Accepts any internal ssh.
Desktop 2:
---Can ssh to any device.
---Can ssh to itself through localhost or 192.168.1.130.
---Any ssh(and telnet) aimed at this device times out.
All three devices recently had openssh-server installed yet only one seems deviant. I've been trying to ssh into desktop 2 to no avail, yes the machine is reachable, yes sshd is running, yes ufw is disabled, and no there is no external firewall that I know of. Anything else I can try? The router for the LAN being dd-wrt.

I have used debian in the past and I am pretty comfortable with it but I have been having an issue. My desktop has randomly frozen two times. All my applications are still running though. For example, I was still able to talk on skype with my friend. However, all I can do is move my mouse but I can not click on anything forcing me to restart. Here are some things that might be helpful:
-I was using compiz both times (I am assuming this might be why. however, I have used compiz on ubuntu and I have never had a problem)
-I use an ATI graphics card
-It froze the first time when I accidently tried to extract the skype install deb.
-It froze the second time when I pressed close in software sources
-Since I have installed debian, I have installed compiz, compiz effect packages, removed openoffice, installed opera, installed google chrome, installed flash, and installed skype.
Does anyone know why my desktop crashed?

My desktop computer, running 11.04 (fresh install) sometimes can't establish a wired Ethernet connection. Sometimes when I boot, it keeps trying to establish, but with no luck. I keep trying to choose "Auto eth0" from the networking menu, but still, it doesn't succeed. If I reboot, it sometimes works. I can't establish a connection about half the times that I boot.
The computer is connected with a cable to a router ("Belkin Wireless Pre-N router"), and the router is connected with a cable to a cable modem.I've been using Ubuntu for a while, and I've had a problem for the past few versions (since around 10.04)? I thought that it might be some old issue that got resolved, so I did a fresh install of 11.04 today, and still have the same behaviorI'm willing to try things next time I can't get a connection, but don't know what.

I seemed to have crashed my X desktop and I never get a GRUB screen that allows me to boot into recovery. Long story short, I accidentally used metacity --replace (out of habit) when I lost my window decorations. This caused the panel and dash to crash and I couldn't get a terminal. So I forced a reboot and now I boot into a black screen every time. GRUB doesn't even give me my normal recovery mode option. After my BIOS posts it just shows me the purple splash screen then blackness. I have a LiveCD standing by but don't know where to go from there.

I am using uswsusp / s2disk and it hibernates fine. Then, on resume, it apparently completes the resume (reaches 100%) but it never progresses to the actual resumed system and gets stuck on this screen: Before upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04 it worked fine. It does not anymore.

I'm having trouble resuming from hibernation. The splash screen loads up with "Resuming from /dev/sda6" (this is the correct partition) and the HDD light shows it's reading the drive. It then stops reading and the loading animation starts up (I'm running Lucid). Then nothing, just the animation. I recently updated initramfs-tools to 0.98ubuntu2~lucid as hibernation wouldn't work at all with the old version (see [URL]). I've also installed this script because of errors on hibernation.
I've posted the output from recovery mode after hibernation below:

ASUS P5Q Deluxe, Intel Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8800, 4GB RAM, USB keyboard and mouse never had problems with suspend and hibernation in Ubuntu. Until the latest version 10.10. Both before and after installing the proprietary Nvidia drivers, the system enters the sleep and hibernate but I can not wake up properly. Specifically, while it looks as it starts up, but not fires up the X server. Oddly - operate only CTRL + ALT + F1-12. You can switch to the text cosole, see the "incentive" to sign but other keys do not work and nothing can be entered. Not working CTRL + ALT + DEL as well, so you need to turn off the system power.

Ubuntu booting up from hibernation is not faster compared to complete start up. In windows, you can feel the boot-up is faster if you hibernate your PC earlier. But in ubuntu, i dont feel that, to boot up from hibernation, it takes quite long time, not faster than complete new start-up.
