Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connection - Takes Upward Of 10 Minutes And Over 20 Times Of Me Clicking 'Connect'
Jun 20, 2011
I have been having trouble with Ubuntu 11.04 when connecting to the Internet via Wireless Networking. It will connect, and has good speed once it connects, however it takes upward of 10 minutes and over 20 times of me clicking 'Connect'.
Is there a way to connect to a wireless network quicker? My network is unsecured and without a keyring. It is not only slow connecting to my network, but the network of other's.
I recently started attending University and there is a filesharing hub set up throughout the dorms. I want to connect to it using LinuxDC++ but the connection just continuously times out. I have used DC++ before on Windows and never had any troubles so I am thinking it is something to do with networking in Linux (I have only been using Ubuntu for about a month).
I have a Acer Aspire 7535-5020 laptop with a Atheros AR5B91 wireless adapter & lose my connection after about 10 minutes. The only way to reconnect is by rebooting.I read in another thread that installing the linux-backports-modules-karmic would solve the problem. However when I try to install it I get the message, Error Dependency is notsatisfiable:Linux-backports-Modules-2.6.31-22 generic.
Having struggled to get the wireless connection at least working I find it drops out after 15 minutes or so. When I check for wireless connections I can see none at all and the "Disable/Enable wireless conncection" has disappeared, the Network one is still there. I get an auto reconnection if I reboot and all is well for another 15 minutes. Is there any way i can recover the situation without a reboot? I am trying to install the hplip-3.11.5 driver for my new wireless printer, the program take a while to install and by the time it has started looking for the printer the connection has dropped out. I can't be sure but I don't think it was dropping out before I connected the printer using my wired pc. All good fun but I'd like to get it sorted so I can get the engine back in my motorbike, the sort of technology I prefer!
I have fedora 10 and am having problems with the wireless access. My computer uses the Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless Adapter. It connects to the network, it gets an ip address and a broadcast address, but it loses connection within 3 min. I'm also new dealing with linux and fedora.
I have a Dell 1545 laptop with ubuntu 9.1 32-bit installed (the 64-bit had a bug with the wireless drivers which is why I have not used it). Initially, the laptop worked well with the wireless (a sky router with WPA security) but now, the wireless signal drops after a couple of minutes of usage. I have to reboot the laptop or sometimes reboot the router as well to regain the wireless signal. I am using the Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver.
I have an older dell inspiron 6400 as well with the same OS and driver and it works perfectly without any problems for hours / days.
I buy a new usb network adapter (Through DX), when I try to use it in ubuntu or BackTrack4 Final it is working, and connecting networks even with WPA encryption. But after few minuts it stops working totally. It is showing that I'm connected to the AP but web sites do not respond.
Notes: - I have another PCI Wireless adapter which works fine.
- The problematic adapter works great on windows.
- A driver CD came with it, including a linux driver which I wasn't succesfully installed.
- A BackTrack3 Disc came with it, claming by the instructions that the adapter will work with it. I didn't try it because i have backtrack 4 final.
It took me dozens of surfing the web hours, and too many restarts,
I'm running Fedora 12 on an Acer Aspire One with KDE. The built-in wireless works without a problem EVERYWHERE except at work. It's a shared wireless connection using WPA/WPA2 security.I can connect but it's "hit-and-miss" if I can do anything with it. Somedays it works well for a few minutes then has a period of inactivity - then slow - randomly receives...It worked flawlessly when the computer was running Windows7 no one else has connectivity issues but I'm the only one using Linux.
Is that normal for Ubuntu Linux to take 5 to 10 minutes for computers to show up in the Windows Network Neighborhood in Nautilus after startup. It also takes 5 to 10 minutes to show Samba shares on my windows computer using NetBios (not however by entering ip). Is there a lag because of a set time of netbios network broadcasts to exchange netbios information to resolve by WINS. Is there any way this can be sped up so I can use my network immediately? Is there any way to force these broadcasts?
I upgraded to 10.10 and have everything setup, installed my wifi card fine with ndiswrapper so I can connect to my neighbors which isn't protected but mine is. Everytime I try to connect it will ask for the WEP so I put it in, it tries connecting then ask for the WEP again then repeats over and over....does 10.10 not like WEP connections? I don't know what to do.
I am having an issue with my wireless connection dropping about every 2 minutes (web pages timing out), then working for a couple of minutes then dropping again. The connection icon in the task bar says I'm still connected at about 70%.I have a dual boot system and the wireless works fine in opensuse but not in Ubuntu 10.10 I have an Asus G50vt-X5 laptop but I am not sure about the wireless chipset.
I've been using this network forever With windows and I can't figure out how to connect to it now with ubuntu...I have a build-in wireless card and I know the name/password of the connection, but my computer cannot seem to locate it. I've looked through guides and none of them work..
I am unable to connect to my wireless connection! i have put in all the correct details and password but the connect button is greyed out so I am unable to click on it.
Using an old (5 year) laptop with XP loaded I installed wubi to save altering partitions etc. It all downloaded fine and connected to the internet by wire. I set up the wireless connection using WPA but could not connect. The wirelsss card does see my network and others. After lurking around the forum and trying various things I found that I could connect without encryption. The more I read the more I became confused. Anyway what I could glean about my Wireless Card it is a Intersil Prism2 mini usb adapter - but also shows up as an Acer ?? Warplink 802.11.
Using lshw I found this reference to wireless
I became even more confused and got a bit lost using the various codes in the terminal and looking up things about drivers etc but would like to persist.
i just installed the 10.0.4 version. My problem is that I cant connect to the internet. When I add a new wireless connection, it says that its connected but i cant ping the router or connect to any websites. It keeps auto assigning me with a 10.42.43.1 ip which doesn't make any since because my router's is nowhere close to that.
I ve just install ubuntu 10.10 and am unable to connect to wireless connect. I was able to connect on the try ubuntu before install option. I have dual booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I have tried connecting without the WEP key and still no luck. Just found it strange that connect on try it but not after full install.
Earlier today I decided I wanted to switch back over to ubuntu, my internet was working fine, but as soon as i reformatted to Linux my modem stopped showing any lights under ADSL - TX and RX. and I can't connect to my wireless connection anymore. What should I doooooooo
I have installed the driver of my Broadcom Wireless card BCM4312 ( Acer extenza 5620 laptop) and when i try to connect to my wireless connection it just try to connect for a while and then go offline i tested another usb wireless card and still no success
I have been running Meerkat in its various forms for the last few weeks. Wireless connection has not been a problem at all. I rebooted about 15 mins ago and on restarting the wireless connection will not connect. I checked to see what the problem was and clicked on Edit Connections and on the wireless tab.
My wireless is set to auto and its name is SKY 24550. I now have 2 entries in the same name and the one that is trying to connect is asking for wep 128 bit security details to be entered. My connection used WPA&WPA2 personal.
Ok, I thought I'll delete the new one (with the different security setting) and try again.
No good, it still asks for the same security details.
So I go back into edit connections and the new one is back again! I can't get rid of it, and while it's there the one that should connect isn't getting the chance.
Fortunately ethernet is working ok and I also have a Natty install which also connects ok through the old wireless connection, but not in Maverick.
10.04 in a couple of identical lenovo laptops (of friends) suddenly have stopped connecting successfully to wireless, coinciding approximately with a mains power socket fail at the modem router, now fixed. presumably the machines were trying to connect to the access point, which may or may not have been working, but themodem router was not. Now, internet connection and wireless access point is fixed ok and is back up, and i can connect wirelessly to the access point ok using an eeepc with 10.04.2 with no problem so the access point is working ok
the target laptop/s are still ok via wired ethernet, and can *also* connect to a neighbours open wireless (a british telecom so called fon network, it asks for an account password), and all local wireless networks can be seen normally, and the home access point ssid can also be seen ok. so the aptop wireless is connecting ok, but not to this particular access point now. maybe someting has got screwed up? it is wpa2 and when clicked, after a long-ish time, the authentication is requested, then given, correctly, and still not connecting, asks for authentication again etc etc. no local secure wallet is being used.
when upgrading these laptops for my friend some time ago from 9.04 i have a small recall that 10.04 had a odd thing with wireless authentication (?) bug? i have deleted the network connections gui listing for this ssid and restarted the laptop, still no joy.
On every other machine and on this laptop when running Windows,It is WEP, Open system, Key Index 1, and the passphrase works except on this when running OpenSuse. It seems as if it just times out.
I've been at this the last 3 hours now or so. I am not a very good with Linux, I am fine with all other areas. I have this laptop, with a Intel Pro 2200BG card. The idea was to install a lxde lightwieght on it and use PCLINUXOS, because its "easy". This computer is for internet browsing and thats it. Under the Network Center -- I can see all networks, including neighbours. When I try to connect to my router via Wireless, I get connection failed over and over.
I then tried doing all the following: Changing the router from WEP to, WPA, WPA2 personal, WPA2 Enterprise Changing the SSID, broadcasting to ON, changing the SSID name I've used various different passwords, and reset the router now about 50 times. I am connecting to my Router (as Ive changed the SSID and noticed it picks up the new name). (Yes I can see the correct MAC addreess). Yes I am on the right channel, all good here.
My Nintendo DS is connecting fine with all the changed settings now. The wireless card worked fine under Windows XP (However I just removed the operating system since I really had no need for it). I've tried every other mode, it works wired. Like I had explained above, I downloaded a what I thought was an easy verison (distro), I was really hoping to get away from the crazy windows life with crazy errors and instability.
I did try enabling display log, and doing it manually by adding a connection, etc. The log tells me about as less would a windows event log: it says Problems occurred during the network connectivity test This can be caused by invalid network config or problems w/ your momde / router Reluanch, etc.
I can connect to the internet fine with wvdial and wvdialconf; heck I am even posting from my PCLinuxOS FM Distro. I want to setup an ethernet connection between two PC's, one running PCLOS 2010.11 FullMonty and the other Knoppix 6.2.0. Knoppix is fine and setting up a connection is simple but with PCLOS I have been having many problems trying to set it up. I tried using the drakconnect tool but it did not work. I tried assigning it a static IP Address but the other PC would still not pick it up and to to it all I keep getting the same error message about problems during the network connectivity test!
I have just installed Linux Mint 8 to an Asus A6000. My problem is that the computer won't connect with my wireless router. I have tried with MAC-adress and such, but still no respons. I also tried to connect with a cable to my modem, but no response there either.
I think I may lack some drivers, to what I think is Broadcom b43, but I am not sure. I tried to download the drivers on my other computer, and transfered them to the Asus. I managed to install 2/4 drivers, but on the two others, I get this message "Failed to fetch ... Couldn't reach archive.ubuntu.com"
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) on my HP laptop. My office desktop uses Windows 7 Home Edition. I created an adhoc connection on my desktop pc because I also want have an internet connection on my laptop. But Ubuntu seems do not detected the adhoc I created on my pc. I also tried to connect using the hidden wireless network and entering all the necessary access (wep key, etc...) but still didn't work. Is there any way that I could connect my Ubuntu on a adhoc? Is that possible?
My laptop has been working fine with ubuntu 10.04, and earlier today it shut down after running out of battery. I came to use itr and discovered that the wifi icon had disappeared from the panel bar, and it won't connect to the wireless networkor via a wired connection.I have had a play around with this, tried ping -c5 google.comresult was:ping: unknown host google.comand ping -c5 4.2.2.1result: onnect:etwork is unreachable.I have other computers connecting to this network and know that it is working fine.
I'm having some problems with my wireless connection. I'm on Ubuntu 10.04, on a HP ProBook 4520s, with a RaLink RT3090 wireless network card. I installed the drivers (hopefully correctly), the wireless seems to work correctly, it scans and finds networks, but when I try to connect to one, it times out after some time, while still attempting to connect. I also have a wired connection that works correctly and without problems. Other computers that try to connect to said wireless network manage to do so without any problems, so this has left me a bit baffled, since, like I said, everything seems to be in order.
I'm a new Ubuntu user, so please tell me what other information I need to provide in order to easily and successfully facilitate troubleshooting this, because it is, as you can imagine, quite aggravating, having a laptop that needs to be connected to the internet through a cable.
My computer takes a while to connect to my Linksys N router.
It used to connect in a snap of your finger automatically.
Now it does not.
Yes I have tried manual configuration, and double checking the password, ssid, protocols, and security type.
WPA2 personal is the security type.
There are maybe 4 different ways I know how to connect. The most annoying thing is when this box pops up saying to type in a password for the network connection.. and keeps popping up even when everything is right.
All I need is a reliable, easy, and automatic program to connect me to the internet, maybe even before I log into my system.
Linux Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition is my system. Brilliant system.
Running 10.04.3 on my rig specs in signaturethis happened after i tried oracle virtulabox 4 trying to get unity in itbefore i installed it udevd took about 2-2.5 seconds now it takes 7 seconds (it takes less than 1 second in my virtualbox)i still could not get unity in it i reverted back to my 3.1.6 virtualbox and udevd is still slow BEFORE:AFTER:i have removed all the junk i could find left over from virtualbox 4 /etc/rc{0..6}.d/{K20vboxballoonctrl-service,K20vboxdrv,K20vboxweb-service,S20vboxdrv}/var/lib/update-rc.d/{vboxdrv,vboxweb-service,vboxballoonctrl-********* -> boards are apparently not letting the post that rightfrom what i have been able to find out about udev it it does stuff with kernel eventsis there a way i can clean up udev/few what it is doing and remove what ever junk got in it it appears to be timing out IMO i have been looking for a solution for over 24 hours at this point if i have to replace udev with a manual version so be it as long as i have a app that can generate itfor the record my virtual 10.04.3 boots faster then my main install on a ssd as a result of this and that is just sad a install can boot faster on a 80 Mbps than a 240Mbps drive i should be able to boot to the login in about 5 seconds after posti know 5 seconds is not much time but percentage wise it is about 50% of my boot time
Title describes the problem rather well. After selecting Linux 2.6.23-22-generic 64-bit in the GRUB bootloader, I am staring at a black screen with a white flashing underscore for almost 2 minutes (usually between 1min40sec and 2min). The Linux kernel is loading here, and it's taking forever!
Once Plymouth starts it barely even manages to flash into view before it's done and I get to login, so bravo @ Canonical.
But seriously, I need that boot time cut down A LOT.
Since I'm assuming it has quite some relevance, here's all my installed programs: (So if you know any offenders you can point them out)
EDIT: I can see it also lists packages I've removed after installing them. Removed packages are listed as "deinstall" and are, obviously, NOT installed or functioning, but their config files remain I assume.
