Ubuntu :: Changing Log-in Wallpaper In 10.04?
Jul 25, 2011I just wrote a little script to help anyone out if they want to do this. Just download loginWallpaper.sh open your terminal and cd to the download directory run

sudo chmod 744 loginWallpaper
then run

./loginWallpaper.sh
and follow the prompts Make sure the pic you want to use is a .JPG and is in your home directory. Choose Option 1 on your first run. It will move the pic to the proper directory on the system and will open the Gnome Appearance Preferences at the log-in screen. After you run Option 1 logout, goto Background then Add button. Select your wallpaper and "BOOM" it changes. Log back in and run the script again

Fedora :: Wallpaper Keeps Changing After Setting New One?
Mar 30, 2011I'm in Gnome running Compiz, and every time i go into the wallpaper changer to switch my backgroung, within 30-45 seconds of me changing it, it changes back to some white washed out version of one of the default wallpapers.

Mar 21, 2010Just ran into this issue with Suse 11.2. Everytime I try to change the desktop wallpaper, plasma crashes and returns me to the log in screen. This is the first time this has happened and it happens no matter what wallpaper I choose. Desktop effects are OFF. Strange that adding widgets to the desktop does NOT cause this crash, just changing the desktop wallpaper. The computer is using 855GM Intel Chipset.

Aug 17, 2011Fedora 15, fresh install.I changed the wallpaper from default to a solid colour. After switching between gradient to colour the system crashed logged me out and upon logging in it simply runs endlessly accessing my harddisk but never actually loading the desktop.I can kill X and reboot, but it's the same problem waiting for me on restart. I really don't want to re-install or delete users (to put it in context, I just spent 3 days trying to install Fedora because Anaconda doesn't know how to install GRUB correctly).

Jan 3, 2011Sometimes, out of the blue, my screen will suddenly change brightness. And no, not the gnome power manager dimming the screen when idle, I'm talking about it suddenly going from dimmest to brightest when I haven't even touched the screen brightness buttons in the last few minutes.
what package would I file this bug against)? This is Maverick on a thinkpad T60, and I can provide any other information that people find relevant. On what may be a related note, it seems that one push of the screen brightness up or down buttons causes two increments in brightness.
OpenSUSE :: Keyboard Layout Changing Randomly - GNOME In Slovak Language
Jan 30, 2010I have openSUSE 11.2 with default GNOME desktop and i'm facing issues with keyboard layouts, which are changing randomly. Problem is that i have GNOME in Slovak language and therefore has openSUSE set durring installation my keyboard layout to 'Slovak' but i always change it to 'Slovak QWERTY' which suits me better.
Problem is that randomly system adds back to my layouts which are 'Slovak QWERTY' and 'USA' also original 'Slovak' layout which was previously removed.
I must always manually remove this third layout and it's very frustrating. Many times on fresh system boot it's anyway back and so on and on... Where may lie the problem? Why is GNOME not respecting my settings? In Ubuntu i never have these basic issues. Are there on system boot some specific SUSE triggers which are overwriting my configuration?

Mar 18, 2011I am using Debian 6.0 Sid (aptosid) with KDE 4.5.x and would like to install the official Debian Squeeze KDM theme, wallpaper etc, into my system.
I think the theme is called Orbit Fun? I came to this forum instead of aptosid's forum to learn how to install KDM themes the Debian way using a terminal and not the KDE-Look download way. KDE-Look does not have the official Squeeze theme at this time, and I generally do not like the aptosid artwork, but I really like sid.

By (first step) doing: pcmanfm --set-wallpaper /point-to-new-wallpaper, it change the configuration to the new wallpaper, then, my question is: What is the most correct way to "refresh the desktop screen" (by command line) so that the new wallpaper is then displayed.
And by (second step) doing: lxsession-logout, and choosing 'Logout', the new wallpaper is displayed after the new login. No problem here. Is there a (most correct) way to completely change the picture and activate it by command line (without user intervention)?

Mar 22, 2010I'm running Xfce 4.6.1 and xfdesktop 4.6.1.1 (or so aptitude said). When I use 'None' image option - just colour - I get the colour I ask for but if I change that to either 'Single image' or 'Image list' then both the image and the background colour are made greyscale.
I have tried looking through all the options I could find to do with Xfce and searching Google but I don't know how to phrase it as my searches tend to bring up black and white wallpapers.
Running X as a different user on the same computer does not cause the same problem which makes me think it might be cause by a user setting though I spent a long time with a black and white wallpaper and do not know when the issue first arose.
Debian Multimedia :: No Wallpaper / Desktop Icons - Xfce/XDM On Squeeze?
Apr 10, 2010I have been an Ubuntu user for the past two years and have recently made the switch to Debian, so while not new to GNU/Linux or Debian-like distributions I am still learning on many fronts. Installing squeeze directly caused issues with my Wi-Fi for some reason, so I installed lenny and performed aptitude safe-upgrade (full-upgrade kept breaking the system), and took care of stray packages manually to get a working squeeze system. My desktop environment of choice is Xfce, using XDM.
Ever since the upgrade, both the login prompt and the actual desktop have had a black background with no icons or right-click menu. I am guessing that the issue is a daemon that should be running but isn't, although I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting the issue, which is why I came here. I've uploaded at of my desktop here Right-clicking in the black space doesn't do anything, and changing my wallpaper settings is ineffective.It's not a huge problem for me, as everything else in the system appears to work, but I would like to figure out what the problem is, fix it, and maybe learn something about Debian in the process.
Debian :: Iceweasel Crashes More Or Less Randomly
Feb 10, 2016I have Iceweasel 38.6.0 on Jessie 8.3, and it seems to crash more or less randomly. It just suddenly disappears, and when restarted, it gives that "embarrasing"- thing. The pages reopen fine and it may take a day between crashes, or about an hour.
Where should I look for the reason of the crashing? Is there a log file or something somewhere?
My machine is old StinkBad T400. I'm using Cinnamon.

Debian :: Squeeze Randomly Freezes Up?
Apr 17, 2011This usually took place when I switch back to console from X (Ctrl+Alt+F1).After I start typing in the console, the characters started showing up one by one slowly and more slowly. Finially the console was completely frozen before all the characters were able to show up. This took place in less than 5 seconds. Feb 17, 2010I have used debian in the past and I am pretty comfortable with it but I have been having an issue. My desktop has randomly frozen two times. All my applications are still running though. For example, I was still able to talk on skype with my friend. However, all I can do is move my mouse but I can not click on anything forcing me to restart. Here are some things that might be helpful:
-I was using compiz both times (I am assuming this might be why. however, I have used compiz on ubuntu and I have never had a problem)
-I use an ATI graphics card
-It froze the first time when I accidently tried to extract the skype install deb.
-It froze the second time when I pressed close in software sources
-Since I have installed debian, I have installed compiz, compiz effect packages, removed openoffice, installed opera, installed google chrome, installed flash, and installed skype.
Does anyone know why my desktop crashed?

Aug 15, 2011Occasionally, with no warning and no cause that I've been able to see, everything that I try to open will produce an error message saying that an associated configuration file For example, I try to open dolphin, and I get a message saying: 'Configuration file "/home/<user>/.kde/share/config/dolphinrc" not writable. Please contact your system administrator.' I get similar ones for konsole, open office, and everything else I try to open, except firefox, which I installed by hand. Konsole still works after this error, but dolphin and open office do not. This never happens directly after startup (it usually happens about an hour after), and always happens to everything - I never get this message for just one program, while everything else works fine. I've tried deleting /home/<user>/.kde/ to 'reset' kde, but that hasn't helped. In case it helps, I'm running Squeeze (amd64) with kde 4.4.5.

Apr 16, 2016My supposedly stable system was crashing. The problem was one or more specific screensavers--xscreensaver, the display manager (lightDM), and X itself are innocent as far as I can tell.
I'm on a Thinkpad T400 with Debian Jessie (8.4)/MATE/lightDM. I have libreboot and not proprietary BIOS. I like variety, so in addition to installing xscreensaver itself (the unofficial patched jessie version without the "out of date" nag, which I got from https://angband.pl/debian/pool/main/x/xscreensaver/), I also installed some extras from the official repository (xscreensaver-gl-extra, xscreensaver-data-extra, xscreensaver-screensaver-bsod). I enabled all the installed screensavers and asked xscreensaver to randomly cycle through them.
To my dismay, after variable lengths of time (usually within 20-60 minutes), when a random screensaver has been on for a little while (I'm guessing as it's about to go to the next random one), X crashes to a black screen. The only way to make the black screen go away is to kill X (which I mapped to Control + Alt + Backspace) then log back in. There are no useful logs anywhere except some cryptic IO error 11 entry in ~/.xsessionerros.
Now for the troubleshooting:
1) First I tried installing a more up-to-date version of xscreensaver (5.34-2), which I grabbed from the sid repository. This didn't work--same problem as described above. Therefore, I went back to the patched version for jessie (5.30-1 from angband.pl).
2) To exclude that the lightDM middleman was the problem, I disabled it and was logging in with startx. Problem did not go away. (I then rigged systemd to log me in automatically and for startx to run automatically once I'm logged in--who needs middlemen?)
3) To exclude screensavers butting heads, I uninstalled mate-screensaver and disabled anything from X that could be interfering (by running these commands in a startup script: xset -dpms; xset s 0 0; xset s noblank; xset s off). Problem did not go away. I kept this startup script nevertheless.
4) Finally, to exclude individual xscreensaver module(s) being the problem, I unchecked them all. Then I wrote down the names of my 20 favorite modules (which include some from gl-extra, some from data-extra, and bsod) and tested them in small batches, running xscreensaver with only 5 favorites checked at a time. After testing four batches of 5 and witnessing all 20 favorites both display and load without any X crashes, I went ahead and selected all 20 favorites. I left the laptop on overnight and in the morning (about 12 hours later) it's still going strong.
One or more particular xscreensaver modules are crashing X, probably at the time they are being loaded to be the next one to show. I think I already spent enough time on this, so don't really care to identify +/- troubleshoot the offending modules.
Debian Hardware :: USB Mouse Stops Randomly
Jun 13, 2013I have a USB mouse which randomly stop in Debian Jessie. It starts again if I disconnect and connect it again.
It can take a couple of hours or just a couple of minutes. The only thing I've been able to find is that it stops more often when I'm scrolling.
I have tried different mice with the same result. I recently migrated from Ubuntu where I did not have this problem so I doubt there is a hardware error.
I can see the syslog updating every time I connect the mouse but I can't see anything when it stops

Debian :: Iceweasel Randomly Crashes In Wheezy
Mar 15, 2011I've upgraded from stable to testing.In stable, iceweasel performed flawlessly as I expected. Now it crashes at random times at an alarming rate.It does seem that I can recreate the crash to an extent on ....., where crashes are the most prevalent.I haven't located any bug reports regarding this issue with wheezy iceweasel.

Dec 26, 2015I recently installed Debian 8.2.0 on an older machine (circa 2008, AMD Athlon Dual Core 5000B Processor, Nvidia nforce MCP61P Chipset, Nvidia Geforce 6150SE nForce 430 onboard video).
The install went smoothly, but occasionally the screen scrambles (see example below)
I have to force restart every time this occurs, and I'm not entirely sure what causes it. It used to only happen if I launched iceweasel too soon after login, but now it happens at any random time (in the middle of doing an image search, or right at the end of a 6 hour work session without any hiccups. I have only found topics on "screen blanking", and similar issues when using brightness controls on laptops, but nothing specifically like this.
