View 3 Replies View RelatedHow to connect Ubuntu to the Internet through a broadband connection? I decided to give Linux a try, and I picked the Ubuntu variant. I have some problems with the Internet connection though. I have a broadband (modem-less) PPoE connection, and all the info needed in order for me to connect are the username and password (which I have).

They have all stopped being able to connect to the internet in the last few days. My Windows 7 set up still connects though it seems to be a slow to establish a connection.Could BT have changed something and if so what?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed fedora 12 recently. after installation i tried to connect to the internet using BSNL broadband connection. I filled in the details such as IP, Netmask, Gateway and even DNS servers. In the services also I ensured that the network manager services is on. However even though my computer cannot connect to the internet. I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address 192.168.1.1 and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.
There are two options in the devices eth0 and eth1 thats ok but the unusual; thing is that the Activate (green button), Deactivate (red button) and even the delete buttons are in the background and I cannot select them. Isthis the problem for the network connectivity.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy machine has Ubuntu 10.4, installed a week ago. I'm connecting to the Internet with a Wireless 3G modem, the interface is named ppp0. Additionally, I have a network card that is connected to a home router, that's eth0. Everything works fine with eth0 disabled, all my apps can access the internet correctly. But, my issue is that when i enable eth0, i can't access the internet with any app.
So why do i need eth0 anyway? The thing is that i must share my internet connection with my sister, who is also connected to our home router. I planned to give her access by installing squid on this machine and configuring her browser to connect to squid. However, since none of my apps can connect to the internet while eth0 is active (whereas squid and all other apps work fine with eth0 disabled) I can't let her connect to squid while squid is working correctly.BTW selecting "use this connection only for resources on its network" under "routes..." of the ipv4 tab of "Auto Ethernet" made it a little better. Firefox and Xchat started to work with eth0 active. Squid still doesn't work though (althought it works just fine with eth0 disabled)
I have just recently installed Open SUSE 11.2 from a CD I got from a Linux Magazine.Installed this fine as a dual-boot machine on my HP laptop. To access the Internet, I have normally used 2 ways:1. WIFI Connection via my home desktopUsing Netgear WG111v3 USB Adapter.2. Virgin Broadband USB Mobile Broadband stickI have no problem connecting this via my Windows Vista operating system.Somehow, under Open SUSE 11.2, this is a problem. 2. Virgin Broadband - I managed to get the Virgin Broadband icon of a mobile phone saying that it's connected and "Active" by keying in the number "*99#", username/password as blank and APN as VirginBroadband". However, when I launch Firefox browser, I couldn't get to any external Website even though the icon for the Virgin Broadband says that it's Active and connected.
So what's the problem ?1. WIFI Connectivity to Home Desktop WIFI - with this I have never never got any connection at all. It kept saying "Activating" and I have set up the connection and entered the WEP 128-bit paraphrase hex digits. I managed to scan and got the correct SSID and as I know they belong to my desktopI read somewhere that Netgear WG111v3 is not compatible with Open Suse 11.2 and will need to install the driver for this. So I did obtain the .INF file and installed ndiswrapper -i with the .inf file.. However, still not successful.I'm thinking of buying a Belkin USB Adapter which is in the list of compatible USB WIFI Adapter for Open Suse 11.2 - .. the 802.11g chipset.. as I couldn't get this to work

View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter googling "Virgin wireless broadband"+Ubuntu I got two posts on seperate websites that advised changing APN to VirginBroadband from Virgininternet whcih I did and also followed the advice of one of the aforementioned posts to disable all Authentication Methods except PAP, I still haven't been able to connect although the machine is obviously trying to. So should I try enableing other Authentication Methods, or could it be a hardware or some other problem?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 2 machine LAN with both machines having an ethernet card and a wireless card. There is a Netgear router, both eth and WiFi, allowing both machines to access the internet.
On my Linux machine I am looking for some software that allows me to keep track of my broadband usage on that machine, excluding traffic between the two machines.
There are numerous such programmes for this in XP, which use Winpcap and a GUI frontend. The "other" machine on my LAN is XP and uses just such a program.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 into my compaq notebook. The problem is that I am not able to connect to my wired broadband internet.
Here are the details of my attempts so far:
1)"ifconfig -a" gave 2 devices eth0 and wlan0.
2)"pppoeconf" was unable to detect any ethernet cards.
3)Each time I plug in the LAN cable , the network icon would say "connecting" and ultimately result in "disconnected. Now in offline mode".My ethernet device is Realtek PCIe RT8101E/RTL102E (rev 02).
I also tried to install the realtek driver though I was not confident whether I did it correct.
I am trying to connect to the internet from command line. i issued the command nm-tool the output is
Device: ttyUSB0
Type:Mobile Broadband (GSM)
Driverption1
state:disconnected
Default:no
capabilities:
I also issued the command sudo iwlist ttyUSB0 scan it gives this as output ttyUSB0 does not support scanning
I also issued the command
sudo iwconfig ttyUSB0 essid "MTN DEFAULT"
iT GIVES THE OUTPUT
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A)
SET failed on device ttyUSB): no such device
How can one find out the essid value of a broandband network? How can i connect to the internet from command line for a broadband network?
i recently-ish bought a netbook, and a mobile-broadband toggle to go with it, and set it aside to use later. i promptly installed the Netbook remix on the laptop. Well, I goofed, and didn't notice until well after I bought the WAN toggle that it was made for windows.
so, I downloaded Wine in an attempt to run the start.exe and get my internet. the executable (and the entire drive, i found) are marked by ubuntu as read only. Is there anyway to change this to allow me to run the file? if i did, would it even work?
I have a 10.04 box connected to a router with DHCP and wireless. Lathough it can connect through the wifi, I can't get the connection working with the ethernet cable (which is the one I wanna use by default).
Code:
I may add that it's the default auto connection, but I've also tried to create one manually setting the right ip address, gateway, etc, and attributing the same ip on the router to the MAC address of the card. I've also tried to edit manually the interfaces file, with no effect, or no good one at least. This log comes from a moment when nothing has been changed from the original 10.04 installation.
And I have connected a laptop to this very same cable, and the connection worked straight away...
I installed ubuntu 10.04 in my desktop, was working fine. connecting to the internet through linksys router. now my internet is not working, because i removed the linksys router and connected directly from the internet provider modem, Motorola sbv5222 broadband modem. Now my internet is not working.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSince my recent re-conversion into Ubuntu, I noticed Network-Manager now has mobile broadband support out of the box. Splendid!
I've been using my Huawei (Vodafone) modem since around two weeks, and so far it's been great, except for a little detail: sometimes, them modem simply won't work. I plug it in, "cd" drive (where the Vodafone Mobile Connect files are) shows up, but no "Vodafone" on Network-Manager.
I believe this has something to do with settings the modem may leave behind after each use, but I'm quite newb, so.
So, is it possible to set mobile internet as eth0? the reason for this is that etherape and wireshark wont recognize/work with my mobile internet.
