Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To The Internet Through A Broadband Connection?
May 26, 2010
How to connect Ubuntu to the Internet through a broadband connection? I decided to give Linux a try, and I picked the Ubuntu variant. I have some problems with the Internet connection though. I have a broadband (modem-less) PPoE connection, and all the info needed in order for me to connect are the username and password (which I have).

I have installed fedora 12 recently. after installation i tried to connect to the internet using BSNL broadband connection. I filled in the details such as IP, Netmask, Gateway and even DNS servers. In the services also I ensured that the network manager services is on. However even though my computer cannot connect to the internet. I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address 192.168.1.1 and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.
There are two options in the devices eth0 and eth1 thats ok but the unusual; thing is that the Activate (green button), Deactivate (red button) and even the delete buttons are in the background and I cannot select them. Isthis the problem for the network connectivity.

They have all stopped being able to connect to the internet in the last few days. i just installed the 10.0.4 version. My problem is that I cant connect to the internet. When I add a new wireless connection, it says that its connected but i cant ping the router or connect to any websites. It keeps auto assigning me with a 10.42.43.1 ip which doesn't make any since because my router's is nowhere close to that.

I have "half-way" connectivity, meaning that I can see (and connect to) my home wireless network but I can't connect to the internet (unless I use the wired connection). I have installed NDIS wrapper - no change

My friend is trying to share his clearwire connection with me using Windows ICS. Using network-manager or wicd, I am unable to connect to his share. I am able to connect unencrypted with iwconfig, to the ad-hoc network, and then use dhclient to gain ip address.
I am not able to connect to WPA encrypted share using network-manager or wicd. nm-applet crashes when trying to connect. I am attempting to setup wpa_supplicant, but haven't got it working yet.As usual, the wireless networking out of the box experience in Ubuntu doesn't work. This is extremely frustrating. If Ubunut's goals are to be the default desktop, then these guys need to get wifi that "Just Works"...

I use these settings to connect to it:URL...My problem is, once I connect, within 30 seconds I lose my Internet connection. It goes on and off seemingly whenever it wants. I use ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala as my desktop OS. My internet connection is creating problems these days, ever since I started downloading torrents for iso files. Whenever the downloads in transmission client is running, the internet gets disconnected abruptly, and even my other downloads in d4x stops. On using the plog command in the terminal, it shows the following:
Sep 5 03:32:57 gunjan pppd[3241]: LCP terminated by peer
Sep 5 03:32:57 gunjan pppd[3241]: Connect time 4.5 minutes.
Sep 5 03:32:57 gunjan pppd[3241]: Sent 2102494 bytes, received 31842568 bytes.
Sep 5 03:33:00 gunjan pppd[3241]: Connection terminated.
Sep 5 03:33:00 gunjan pppd[3241]: Modem hangup
Sep 5 03:34:05 gunjan pppd[3241]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Sep 5 03:34:05 gunjan pppd[3241]: Unable to complete PPPoE Discovery
Sep 5 03:35:10 gunjan pppd[3241]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Sep 5 03:35:10 gunjan pppd[3241]: Unable to complete PPPoE Discovery
I dont understand much of it, as am a new user using linux systems from only a few months ago, can't find out. Also on closing the transmission client the other downloads in d4x run perfectly well and so does my internet connection.

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 64-bit laptop. Before that I used Windows7. In Windows, the internet connection worked perfectly well. But after installing Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the internet. The network-manager applet finally says that "You are disconnected". When I do the "ifconfig", I got no IP address.
So, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 in the same system. But the problem persists.
I gone through many posts in this forum but nothing was useful.

I have just installed Linux Mint 8 to an Asus A6000. My problem is that the computer won't connect with my wireless router. I have tried with MAC-adress and such, but still no respons. I also tried to connect with a cable to my modem, but no response there either.
I think I may lack some drivers, to what I think is Broadcom b43, but I am not sure. I tried to download the drivers on my other computer, and transfered them to the Asus. I managed to install 2/4 drivers, but on the two others, I get this message "Failed to fetch ... Couldn't reach archive.ubuntu.com"

I installed Ubuntu (10.04) today and it has gone smoothly except for the fact that I can't connect to the Internet when in Ubuntu (connection works fine in Windows XP). I am using a wireless USB card (Linksys WUSB600N) to connect.
The weird thing is that the card detects all the local networks, asks me for a password to my network, and it even says it is connected to my network after I put the password in -- but when I open Firefox no pages will load.
There is another weird quirk as well: Ubuntu will not restart or shut down properly (it hangs around indefinitely with the little white / orange dots going across the screen) unless I first remove the wireless card from the USB slot. But that doesn't bother me as badly as the lack of Internet.

Recently I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 in which I had connected to the internet by way of terminal (pppoeconf) and I could access any site with ease. But one fine day suddenly I could not access the net, I try to locate the notification icon (network manager),but could not find it.I did this and that, googled it trying to find the solution but alas to my disappointment I had to format it.
After reinstallation of Ubuntu I connect the internet by way of editing connection on panel and i could access the net. The problem is that I could not access some site especially org site e.g Home - Desiring God so can anybody guide me in how to connect in most better way.

After some wonderful days with fedora with my CDMA mobile internet connection (the only connection where I live) NetworkManager can't connect anymore.
I tried to delete the settings and rewrite them without success.
I have A Novatel Ovation U720 CDMA/EDVO USB modem.
I can connect with wnXP and kubuntu, but can't connect with fedora anymore.
I wish to make the definitive move from kubuntu to fedora... but I should wait.
