Networking :: How To Set Up Router Default Web Page On Debian / GNU?

Oct 10, 2009

I have set up a LAN/WLAN, DDNS server, DCHP server, and a proxy/NAT server using Debian/GNU. Now I would like to redirect the host web browser to a welcome web page so the users of my network can read the terms of use and accept them before having access to the internet. Could some one help me to achieve this?

Networking :: Cannot Ping Gateway Or Access Router Administrator Page

Jan 22, 2009

Presently this client access the net through following setup
ADSL modem -> hub -> all computers

Now they want to do some kind of bandwidth control, content filtering. So I tried setting up squid with dansguardian. This is what I did
ADSL -> linux server -> all computers.

The linux server has two NIC cards. One to the ADSL router and another to the local hub. This is how my squid.conf file looks like

http_port 3128
acl ubc src 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 (for subnet)
http_access allow ubc

Have set the gateway server as 121.x.x.1. Which is the gateway server of the ISP. Now I can ping the local network, but cant ping the gateway or any other website. Also I am unable to access the router administration page.

Ubuntu Networking :: Homepage Routed To D-Link Router Login Page On Local Machines?

May 20, 2011

In addition to 2 "desktop" machines, I recently set up an Ubuntu Server with Apache2, but when I try to access my www.homepage from a machine locally connected to the same router (via both wired & wireless interfaces), I am directed to the Login page of the router, not to the www.homepage. Yet, when I access the www.homepage from elsewhere, my www.homepage is accessible.

I can browse to my www.homepage by entering the local IP address into browsers on both local machines, so I know the machines are talking to each other. Just not letting me get in via normal internet browsing channels.

Server: Ubuntu 11.04
Webserver: Apache2
Router: D-Link DIR-615
IP Address of: 192.168.0.110 (reserved on router, static on server)

But when I visit http:/localhost ,it shows up the list of files in <var/www/html> as if a ftp server browsed in web page. So how can I set http://localhost load my default web page index.html ?Second :I want to set up a web server on Internet through my router . I applied for DDNS account & input it into router correctly . I set virtual host in server to redirect any access from port 80 to 192.168.1.2:80 in LAN . Just for in case , I also download and running the DDNS software & installed it on PC 192.168.1.2 in LAN . My DDNS provider is oray.cn . It's a Chinese server provider . I don't think there is anything wrong with oray.cn . But if you need its information just visit oray.cn (Google can translate it for you). So I want to know did I miss something to set up a web server in this kind of situation

Ubuntu :: Wireless Router Configuration Page Not Showing All Devices On LAN

Feb 1, 2010

I went to see if the iPhone was connected and it wasn't listed--and she was now on my wireless network, on the Internet. For the past month, I have experienced slow Internet (the Qwest people came over three times to fix the problem, to no avail.) And, when my laptop and desktop are turned off, the modem still shows activity, as if someone was downloading large files. Qwest insists that my network is secure and no one is using my network (and my house was built in 1997, so the wiring is fairly new and I have had NO issues with Internet/phone and had Qwest service longer than I can remember).

To make a long story short, I am concerned that my router has been hacked. I live in a rural area, so there's no teenagers or weird-o's around that I know of that would do that (unlike city/suburban areas)--and my Linksys router is "lying" to me, as my nephew was ON MY NETWORK and the SSID, MAC address and IP number was not listed on the LAN device list--only my laptop/desktop are listed, and she was happily checking emails on my network. I have changed my WPA2 password three times just in case, no fix.

Debian :: Networking Disabling Interface When Router Is Down?

Jan 27, 2011

I have a Debian computer with 2 network interfaces. Ath0 for wifi and eth0 for cable.
They're configured as dhcp and are getting their ip from different routers. When I shut down one of the router, it takes 5 minutes for the ip address to "Go away". I would like this to take a shorter time. I figured it must be a setting, but my attempts so far have been unsuccessfull. Is there a way to do this?

I'm using dhcp3-client (dhclient) as my client.

Networking :: Debian 5 Box With Two Nics Acting As Router?

I have a Debian 5 system with two nics. eth0 is set up with dhcp-client which will receive a public ip address from my isp. The eth1 will be for my local network and I want to use dhcp-server daemon to serve addresses to my internal network. The area I am confused about is how transmissions are getting sent between nics. I've been told to enable tcp forwarding but I don't understand how that would work since the nics have different network addresses... unless tcp forwarding is basically nat or something..

Networking :: Debian Router, 2 NIC, Traverse Viking ADSL+ Card?

Jan 6, 2010

Since this is my first post, before i describe my problem, i'd like to say regrats to all of you for maintaining here such a good support community.

So, here we go: I have a headless Debian box and i want to set it up as a small office router/gateway. On the box i installed a regular NIC and a Viking Traverse ADSL+ Card which gets recognised by the OS as an 8139 ethernet card and has an embedded ADSL+ modem. The modem is accesible through the PHY interface once it gets assigned an IP. Having said that here is the actual setup:

eth0 : Viking Card
eth1 : NIC (this NIC is connected to a switch)
eth0 : 192.168.1.2 (internal modem is on 192.168.1.1)
eth1 : 192.168.1.3

Networking :: Setting Up Linux Box As IPv6 Router To Replace Netgear WNR1000 Wireless Router?

Jun 18, 2011

I want to set up a Linux box as a wireless router to replace our existing Netgear WNR1000 router, as I believe the Netgear does not support the coming IPv6 protocol. Unfortunately, it is not flashable with OpenWRT or DD-WRT presently.

As we have Comcast, our cable modem acts as a dumb modem according to the customer support guy I talked to, and our router is the one that asks for the IP address from DHCP. Thus, when Comcast switches over to IPv6, I don't believe my existing router would work, correct?

My idea is to take a Linux box and put two NICs and a wireless adapter in it, using IPCop or Smoothwall to set up a router. I could then enable IPv6 support for when we have IPv6 with Comcast. Is that possible? Would there be a way to get BIND to hand out private IP addresses in the same subnet on the both the LAN NIC and the wireless card?

Networking :: Set Up A Laptop As A Router To Connect Wirelessly To ADSL Router?

Nov 6, 2009

I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).

I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.

I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:

net.ipv4.ip_forward=1

Then I tried this on the laptop:

sudo iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ath0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT

This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.

But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.

Networking :: Network Setup - Router - Wireless Router Card ?

Apr 24, 2010

I'm having trouble getting my network set up the way that I want it/had it. You see, when I first set up my network, I just had my cable modem going directly to my standard wired router (A D-Link DI-604), which had DHCP,and was connected to all of the computers on my network. I had one switch hooked up to one of the ports of the router, but this was a regular switch, and it would not try to assign IP addresses, it would just pass through the DHCP info as I wanted.

Now however, my network setup has changed. My room mate and I both got laptops, and we decided that we wanted to have wireless access so we didn't have to constantly plug in to the router.

Now my network is set up like this: The modem is hooked up to the router(DI-604), which is hooked up on the LAN side to our computers, our switch (which is hooked up to 3 more computers), and to a wireless router card (A Gigabyte GN-BC01).

The wireless router card has two jacks for ethernet. One for WAN, and one for LAN. The LAN side we have plugged only into the computer in which the card is installed.

Now the problem is this: The wireless router card comes with DHCP by default, and it's assigning addresses to the laptops and to the computer hat it's in, and worse, the IP addresses are on a different subnet than that of the main dlink router. The Main (dlink) router assigns addresses from 192.168.0.1 (itself) to 192.168.0.254, while the wireless router card assigns addresses from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 (itself).

Because of this, I cannot access services on the wireless network from my wired network or vice versa. The first thing I tried was setting the card to assign addresses from 192.168.0.12 to 192.168.0.253, however it just said "internal error" when I tried to do this. I decided that this may be because it sees that it was being assigned an address on it's WAN side on the same subnet. So the next thing I tried was disabling DHCP and setting the "LAN IP Address" to 192.168.0.12, hoping that the DHCP would just go through the card, like a switch. I would have set the LAN IP address to be assigned by DHCP, but this was not an option, so I decided that'd be the best thing to set it to.

Once again however, setting the LAN ip address to an address on the same subnet as that of the IP assigned to it's WAN side caused it to report an "internal error". I verified that this was the issue by setting the LAN address to several other private IP addresses to test (I.E. 10.0.0.1, 192.168.3.1, 192.168.5.12).

My question then really is: How do I set up both routers so that I can access services and computers from each network from the other network. Should I set them with different subnets and set the gateway on the wireless network to the main router? To the wireless router card? Should I put them on the same subnet? Will it know how to communicate?

Here is a link to (picture) my network diagram. Network Diagram

Networking :: Change Debian Default Dhcp Client?

Nov 5, 2010

I would like to use dhcpcd instead of dhclient in my Debian installation, because I had some trouble with dhclient in the past and I assume the problem is still exists now with some equipments.

So I would like to use dhcpcd, but I couldn't find a way to tell the system to give higher priority to dhcpcd than dhclient.

Also, I've tried to remove the package 'isc-dhcp-client', but it also would like to remove the following packages: isc-dhcp-client knm-runtime network-manager network-manager-kde

Moreover, it says no need the following packages anymore: usb-modeswitch dnsmasq-base libnm-util1 usb-modeswitch-data network-manager-ppp pptp-linux network-manager-openvpn libnm-glib-vpn1 libnm-glib2 modemmanager vpnc network-manager-vpnc

I would like to still be able to use kde-network-manager, because it is much easier to manage wifi connections using this interface.

Networking :: Old Router Behind New Router - Configuration ?

Oct 30, 2010

I've moved a linuxbox from being my gateway (nat, etc) to behind a new gateway (a DD-wrt router). For transparency purposes, I'd like to continue using the old box services, and just have the gateway in front of it.

Here's what I did:

The newgateway is setup for class C, 192.168.0.0

This configuration works, but sometimes it doesn't and I haven't figured out why yet.

At sometimes, clients on the LAN get throughput rates with very little speed loss (using speakeasy speed test). They will run at 33M on the LAN, running through both the newgateway, and the oldbox, and get about 35M with directly connected to the cable modem.

Other times, it seems nothing can talk with anyone, and I am not sure why.

I know what I have done is a little unconventional, but it's a transitional thing, and I am not sure it is the cause of the problem, although it was the last things changed.
