Dec 4, 2009I have a router and when my Debian machine connects I get "null" as the host name. How can I get it to display the host name?

Debian Configuration :: Host Name Not Broadcast To DHCP
Dec 21, 2010I have setup a few machines within my house. The Debian Squeeze machines do not provide a host name in the DHCP client list on my router. Strangely, my Ubuntu, Android, and Blackberry machines do show host names. I have noticed the same behavior when wirelessly tethering my Debian laptop to my Android phone (which also uses DHCP). Is there something I need to enable to have the name show up on the router?

eth0 is attached to a laptop, eth1 is attached to a PC. eth2 is attached to a DSL modem, and the server is successfully acting as my internet gateway. The trouble is, my PC cannot see my laptop and vice versa. E.G. cannot ping, host seems down.

Jun 13, 2010I setup the hostname for my linux machine to Linux. If I try ping Linux from the same computer it works. If I try from another computer inside my network the host can not be resolved. If I ping the IP from another computer it works.
I take a look in my router at DHCP client list and my linux machine doesn't have the Hostname set up.

On my laptop (HPDV7), using DHCP for network access, KDE4.
I use Network Manager to manage wired and wireless connectivity.
I also have Samba server running for connectivity to Windows machines.
My router runs DD-WRT.
How do I tell this HPDV7 system to propagate a Host Name up to the router?
In the DD-WRT status screen, I see Host Name as "*" associated with the assigned IP address.
I cannot, for example, ping my HPDV7 machine from my windows machine, I assume because the router (also providing DNS for my network) does not provide the name to address translation.
I CAN ping the IP address directly, and Samba connectivity from the Windows machine to HPDV7 works.

Jul 6, 2010I am trying to set up a DMZ host - that is, one multifunctional PC between the WAN and the LAN. I've started with a basic router, and expanding upon that as the need arises. I am currently trying to gain access (from the WAN) to a website hosted on one of the servers in the LAN, but I am having trouble accessing the host from the WAN; I think my iptables configuration may be too restrictive. On the DMZ host, I'm using Debian (Etch). I have setup dhcp3-server, a script to configure iptables and pound (reverse-proxy). The (virtual) machine has 4 network cards: eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3; eth0 is the WAN, eth1 through eth3 serve 3 different virtual LANs.
All machines in the LAN (except one windows 2008 server - I might want to address that problem later) get their IP adresses correctly via dhcp from the DMZ host. All machines on the LAN can access the internet (including the 2008 server if I configure it manually) as they should. If I access http://localhost on the DMZ host, pound reports "The service is not available. Please try again later." - as it should.
I can ping the DMZ host from the WAN on 10.0.0.79 However, if I try to access the DMZ host from the WAN (http://10.0.0.79) I get "Unable to connect" from firefox. I'm sure this is not a pound problem, so I think it's in the iptables, or maybe I should be installing some extra software that I'm unaware of.

Debian :: Networking Disabling Interface When Router Is Down?
Jan 27, 2011I have a Debian computer with 2 network interfaces. Ath0 for wifi and eth0 for cable.
They're configured as dhcp and are getting their ip from different routers. When I shut down one of the router, it takes 5 minutes for the ip address to "Go away". I would like this to take a shorter time. I figured it must be a setting, but my attempts so far have been unsuccessfull. Is there a way to do this?
I'm using dhcp3-client (dhclient) as my client.

Jul 29, 2011I have a Debian 5 system with two nics. eth0 is set up with dhcp-client which will receive a public ip address from my isp. The eth1 will be for my local network and I want to use dhcp-server daemon to serve addresses to my internal network. The area I am confused about is how transmissions are getting sent between nics. I've been told to enable tcp forwarding but I don't understand how that would work since the nics have different network addresses... unless tcp forwarding is basically nat or something..

May 2, 2011I have a Dell Vostro 1400 with a BCM4311 Broadcom wireless card that I just reinstalled with 11.04 from 10.04. I have the drives installed and it seams to be working when i run the 'Additional Drives', but I can't get the wireless adapter broadcasting. I followed the instructions given in the knowledge base on installing Broadcom Wireless, to see if I could get it running and that is where I saw the difference between the example and my computer when writing the 'sudo lshw -C network' command. In the example it said it was broadcasting under configuration (just like my wired networks below) and in mine it does not (see below for copy past).
I can't find a tickbox in the systemtray to enable the wirless networking that I had before the update to 11.04 (the 'Enable Networking' tickbox is still there and the wired network works fine - that is how I got online to do this post). I have the hardware switch turned on and I have been in the BIOS and made sure that the Wireless is enabled.Anyone who knows what could be wrong? Where could I go from here?Quote:

LAN (10.1.x.x subnet 255.255.0.0), and2. my internet public (IP 202.xx.xxx.xxxx subnet 255.255.255.240)I have an application in my LAN PC (10.1.2.240) which broadcast udp packet to its client. The client in my LAN can receive the udp packet, no problem.My question is how netcat/socat can RELAY the udp broadcast packet to one of my IP public address so the message can be received by other client from internet ?

May 23, 2011I am trying to monitorize an OpenWRT (Backfire 10.03, r23115) router from an Ubuntu server, but I am having some problems. I have installed Nrpe (2.12) on the remote host (OpenWRT), I have executed the program as a deamon (/usr/sbin/nrpe -d) but when I start the NRPE deamon, I don't get anything about NRPE executing netstat -at or ps -ef.I would need to install check_nrpe on OpenWRT to find out if NRPE is working, but I can't find any ipk package with it. Now, once in the monitoring host when I try to reach the remote host from the server:
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H ip_remote_host
I get: Connection refused by host
Even, trying with localhost:
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H localhost
I get the same error: Connection refused by host
I have installed Nagios Plugins and the check_nrpe plugin. I have edited the /etc/nrpe.cfg file:
allowed_hosts=127.0.0.1 ip_server
I don't exactly know if it is remote host's fault, monitoring host's fault or both.

I can see the Belkin and connect with my PC.but it will not take me through to the internet.

Aug 16, 2011I'm using F15 with two nics, each on different subnets 192.168.1.0/25 and 192.168.1.128/25. My issue is that on boot my 192.168.1.2/25 interface sets a broadcast address of 192.168.1.255 which is incorrect I believe. Its broadcast should be 192.168.1.127. I've tried setting the broadcast param in ifcfg-p3p1 file "BROADCAST=192.168.1.127" with no benefit.I can change this after boot of course, but that removes my default gateway for some reason.

Networking :: No Ping Broadcast Response Over Small Switch
Mar 24, 2010So I just changed my network card settings recently, and I'm now getting no response when I ping the broadcast address for them... the cards are all connected through a switch with IP addresses 192.168.0.x, broadcast 192.168.0.255... ifconfig on all of them shows UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST, but nobody responds to a broadcast packet. Any thoughts?
EDIT: Pinging each machine individually works fine.

I have confirmed by listening on both interfaces using netcat, and broadcasting using netcat, and again only the real interface receives data.
Is this by design, or is it possible to get interface aliases to receive broadcast traffic?

So, here we go: I have a headless Debian box and i want to set it up as a small office router/gateway. On the box i installed a regular NIC and a Viking Traverse ADSL+ Card which gets recognised by the OS as an 8139 ethernet card and has an embedded ADSL+ modem. The modem is accesible through the PHY interface once it gets assigned an IP. Having said that here is the actual setup:
eth0 : Viking Card
eth1 : NIC (this NIC is connected to a switch)
eth0 : 192.168.1.2 (internal modem is on 192.168.1.1)

Networking :: Setting Up Linux Box As IPv6 Router To Replace Netgear WNR1000 Wireless Router?
Jun 18, 2011I want to set up a Linux box as a wireless router to replace our existing Netgear WNR1000 router, as I believe the Netgear does not support the coming IPv6 protocol. Unfortunately, it is not flashable with OpenWRT or DD-WRT presently.
As we have Comcast, our cable modem acts as a dumb modem according to the customer support guy I talked to, and our router is the one that asks for the IP address from DHCP. Thus, when Comcast switches over to IPv6, I don't believe my existing router would work, correct?
My idea is to take a Linux box and put two NICs and a wireless adapter in it, using IPCop or Smoothwall to set up a router. I could then enable IPv6 support for when we have IPv6 with Comcast. Is that possible? Would there be a way to get BIND to hand out private IP addresses in the same subnet on the both the LAN NIC and the wireless card?
