In my Firefox (linux) I can change the page as A4 in File → Page Setup → Page Size. Doing this, I inform the browser to print my pages as A4, instead of the default of Letter. My printer doesn't have Letter paper size (it just exists in USA). If it forget to change the page size, I have to walk to it, press "change page size" to start printing it.
How do I set the default page size to A4 once and forever?
I have a Canoscan LiDE 30 scanner which works fine in Linux. I haven't used it in months, and never since moving from Jaunty x86_64 to Fedora 11 x86_64. This evening I suddenly need to scan two pages to send to someone via e-mail, and the recipient is desperate to receive them. Naturally, Xsane has decided this is the moment to screw me.
The problem: I cannot figure out how to tell Xsane that the page size is 8.5 11. It insists on scanning only the left side, 3.99 x 11. I cannot find a page size anywhere in any of the buttons.
In Preview I once got it to scan the entire page, but could not figure out how to save the image to file. Subsequently I have not been able to figure out how I did it. In any event, scanning from the small main window always scans 3.99 x 11. Adjusting the scan area manually in the Preview window allows me to change the size area in the small main window to 8.5 x 11, but when I then scan from the small main window it reverts to 3.99 x 11.
I have scanned the document a hundred times at least, each time trying different buttons, but nothing has succeeded in getting the full page.
How can I get the page size of my PC in Ubuntu? In proc/meminfo it says something of HugePageSize, but that term of Huge? Is that the solution?

In a nutshell the resulting image, when printed, is smaller than the original document. In writing my dissertation for this post I determined that the cause of the issue is that xsane believes I am scanning an 8.5 x 14 inch document when I am in fact scanning an 8.5 x 11 letter. So the question is... can I change the size to 8.5 x 11? and if so, how? I have not found anything in the xsane Preferences.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn FC11 64 bit with Adobe flash plugin for Linux installed, I see segfault errors from "npviewer" in /var/log/messages. The only browser I have tried yet, Firefox, has glitches every now and then. Sometimes it shows the title of a page in a tab, but the page is blank. This can even happen when I try the Google main page. Is it true that npviewer has something to do with Adobe flash? Is there a way to fix the problem? If it is caused by Adobe flash, is there a different plugin that will replace Adobe flash player?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 workstation with two virtualized guest OSes using KVM/QEMU. Also both 64-bit. One is Fedora 12 the other is beta of Ubuntu 10.04.
The problem is that I would like to use a larger size display that is configured by default.
Both guest OSes have a maximum screen resolution of 1024x768. I would like to increase this to something like 1280x900 or 1440x900. The resolution of the host system is 1920x1080.
This configuration appears to be a result of the installation detecting the resolution being reported by the virtual screen during installation.
The only information I have found on the subject suggests modifying the xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11 directory. Neither guest system has this file.
I tried creating one by hand in the Fedora system and managed to render it completely unusable. Not a big deal as this is recently installed and can be reinstalled easily.
Struggling to find right place to post, or for FAQs, or anything, because reading web browser is such a strain: can use Firefox v. happily in MS Windows, but, new to Linux and Fedora (14), I can't physically SEE where to start modifying appearance of either desktop or browser, which seem minute. I'm sure there's a really simple route if someone can just start me off.

However everytime I attempt to print the printer will say that it's A4 and asks to load paper. I have searched everywhere for this default and I cannot find it in KDE. While in Gnome, all works as expected with printing (even when printing from KDE applications). Does anyone know how to change the default from A4 to US Letter?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Canon i560 printer, which is rather well supported by Gutenprint drivers. I have been using those for a while and they serve my regular printing needs. However, when I try to print a good quality photo on glossy photo paper, strange stuff happens.The colour doesn't come out nice, but somewhat faded. Worse, no matter how I specify that I want to make a print on 10x15 glossy paper, the actual print is always cut off, printed landscape when I specify portrait, etc. The printer is shared via CUPS and when my wife prints from her Windows XP machine, the printer works normally and the colours look brilliant so there's no problem with the machine itself, it has to be in the driver.
I googled this problem extensively and in my search, I found out that Canon does in fact have a Linux driver for this printer, though it can't be found through their website. It is on their ftp server, however: ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/I installed the driver from there, following instructions that I found on the web and I have the printer working. But...the photo paper size that I want to print on (10x15 centimetres) isn't available in the ppd file. I can also not specify a custom paper size to print on in digikam or gwenview, since that option is greyed out...Since a ppd file is a text file, I decided to see if I could add a custom paper size. I am running OpenSuSE 11.0 KDE 3.5.9 "release 49.1" with Kivio 1.6.3. I am using Kivio to create large flow charts (paper size is 44in x36in) and I have an HP DesignJet 800PS that is capable of printing documents this size. We handle blue prints occasionally as well as when I have large documents (size wise) to print.
Anyhow I have a table relationship drawing I have created and I need to print it out. Now I have come up with a work around (save the document as PNG, import it into OpenOffice then save as PDF and print...) but when I try to print as PDF, I get the default paper size of A4 and the option to change the paper size is ghosted in Kivio. Also I only get a small segment of the actual drawing.
How come this setting is disabled (2 in about:config rather than 0) under Linux by default? Is there a reason to not turn it on?

Users then can browse to their site by going to[URL],,.How can I get apache to show a different or default page if the user does not have a index.html file in their public_html folder. Cause if they dont, you get a 401 saying you dont have permissions to view, etc. So id like apache to default to something else if the user doesnt have a index.html.

What i want to do is edit the script to create a default web page in /var/www/html a new user is added through the script.What the script does now is adds a user and sets a password for the user. What possible way (either through a combination of python or c or some other language) could i add to the shell script to do this? I've tried just dointhe command to touch index.html /var/www/html but it puts it on the desktop. Here's the script....
