Slackware :: 13.1 Get Black Screen Instead Of Login Window

Nov 27, 2010

Got my Slack running on vostro 1310 for a while now. But just Today... first for what ever reason my wifi stopped to work (at boot time) even though interface was up as usual, driver was loaded, supplicant has not been touched etc. So I wired up a LAN cable and the at boot time I saw an information from eth0 that packet length is 0 and cannot be parsed (great no network at all). Tried to investigate the problem on a different machine, and one of the suggestions I've found was to set router to no security and see if wireless will connect. I thought that it would be a good idea to reboot the machine to attach to the rooter at boot time and no eth0,wlan1 tries to connect to the network and then I get a black screen instead of login window

Ubuntu Installation :: Unplanned Visits To Login Window - Taken To Login Screen Three Times

Aug 18, 2010

I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Ubuntu Installation :: Nearly Black Screen After Login?

Jan 20, 2010

I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 on one of them by default installation. For the moment there is only one user declared. The installation seems OK, except that Ubuntu didn't find my PPPoE connexion. When I logged in, I got a blank screen with the mouse cursor (it moved, but when I left or right-clicked nothing happened) and on the left something looking like two 1-pixel wide menus, as if the system had understood there were a dual screen. These menus could roll and unroll, and I think I even once managed to shutdown by going to the last invisible item thanks to the keyboard arrows (I'm not sure, because I had also clicked on ctrl+alt+suppr, so it could be a delayed effect of that).

I restarted the computer several times, to get no more than that. When I'm in Gnome safe, everything is OK but I don't have any root privilege there (I guess it's normal): for instance, I can't set up the internet connexion. My 20" 4/3 Philips screen is recognized. Then I changed the screen frequency: it's still OK for Gnome safe session, but now, in the Gnome normal session, instead of a black screen with 1-pixel wide menu, I get a black background picture with white light coming from above and reflecting to an otherwise invisible floor. The mouse cursor is moving, but this is the only thing which works.

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Goes Black After Login

Feb 9, 2010

I just Installed Ubuntu on my PC (win XP-pro) using wubi, by downloading the .iso from webpage and burned it to cd. The installation went fine, but when I login the screen goes black. I can still see my mouse pointer and one vertical pixel line of the desktop. Could it be the graphics drivers, if so how can I update/change them, via rebooting in safe mode and using command line?

Installation :: Ubuntu Black Screen At Login / Fix It?

Jun 27, 2011

I just used a LiveCD to install Ubuntu 11.04 x64 on my HP desktop. I'm not sure what you need to troubleshoot. It has the following specs:

HP Pavilion Media Center m8539f PC
AMD Phenom X4 9550 QC Processor
5gb ram, 750 gb hdd
Came with vista home prem, nothing left of that except the old restore partition, which I have left intact. It had Windows XP installed recently, but that's completely erased. GeForce 9300GE Video Card

Anyway, I want the x64 so that I can have access to my RAM, among other things.

After installation with the LiveCD, it will come on, present me with generic/safe/etc boot options, and then when either safe or generic is chosen, it goes to an (active?) cursor for a few seconds before revving the HD, screen going black, and then... nothing. No indication it is even still powered at all except the light on front.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get Stuck At Black Flickering Login Screen?

Mar 10, 2010

so i have been trying to install ubuntu for quite some time now and i have run into a bit of a roadblock.

I have tried to install 9.10 and it installs just fine (the GUI works just fine and everything seemingly goes ok), however when i go to boot it, i get to a flickering screen asking for my username and password (this is not the gnome login screen, it is just a blank black prompt asking for me to login). however, the flickering is inhibiting me from easily entering anything in from my keyboard. Thus, i cannot log in to fix the problem (i cannot enter my password because i dont know if the keys i am entering are being accepted or not). and recovery mode does the same thing.

This happens if i try installing it straight up, or if i install it inside windows. I have tried all kinds of boot options and install options (all that acpi crap) but none of it works.

i even tried installing some of my old copies of ubuntu (8.04), but when i do that the grub cannot load the linux kernel. I have also tried both the 64-bit and the 32-bit versions to no avail.

I am running an ASUS motherboard, AMD quad core x64, dual Nvidia geforce 8600's, 6 gigs of ram, and PLENTY of hard disk space.

I am not a noob to linux at all, but i have never encountered a problem like this and i have no clue how to fix it. Hell, i dont even know how to go about fixing it without logging in.

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen After Login But Cursor Still Showing

Apr 18, 2011

when I boot and login to a fresh install of Ubuntu, everything goes fine, the login screen appears, I login. Then the cursor appears on a black screen. This is normal. Then when the desktop should appear, on the very left edge of the screen, about 5 pixels in size, you can see the panel and the rest of the desktop. But I stress, You still see the cursor. In this small area, you can right click as you, even click on the menu and it will come down, you can see it. I can click on Ubuntu SC and the cursor will turn to a loading symbol. But then nothing again. I can press Ctrl + Alt + F2 and terminal will come on fine. So far, this has happened on a live CD of Maverick, A live USB of Maverick, A Natty Narwhal Fresh Install, A Maverick Fresh install, A Karmic Old Install and That same Karmic After going through a Distro upgrade via Ctrl + Alt + F2 to 11.04. I've gotten all the updates for all of them (A slow, bandwidth wasting process), and this doen't happen on other computers, even ones with lower graphics cards then mine. Additionally, on the same computer on a seperate partion, I can load my main Maverick just fine, Indicateing that it can't be a hardware problem. After searching across the internet, I'm at loss to an answer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get To The Login Screen, But When Hit Enter Eveything Turns Black?

Nov 30, 2010

I'm trying to install the latest version of Ubuntu Studio. I tried it a few months ago with my HP... a live system worked fine, but when I installed it, it would go blank after the splash screen. I assumed it was some sort of incompatible graphics driver and gave up since I don't know enough about Ubuntu yet.Now I have a spare Dell XPS desktop sitting around and I got the latest version of Ubuntu Studio and tried it again. The install goes by erfectly, this time the welcome screen actually comes up and I can see my username. As soon as I hit enter, which I imagine should bring up the password prompt, the entire screen goes black and won't respond to anything.

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen

Apr 12, 2011

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.

I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Slackware :: Black Window Frame In Xfce - Sometimes

May 11, 2011

When starting Xfce, there's a ~50% chance that the theme (no matter which one) doesn't work properly and all the window frames are black. Sometimes it does work, but I can't reproduce either - it's random.

I've had this problem before on 13.1 and somehow managed to make it disappear (I switched from KDE and blamed it on me not getting all the settings right immediately). However, after installing 13.37 and starting with a clean homedir, it happens more often that it did on 13.1 and I just can't get rid of it.

PS: The whole Slackware / X11 / Xfce setup is fairly generic, but I do use the binary Nvidia driver from SBo and I have two TFTs configured as separate X11 screens.

Debian Multimedia :: Spice Client Window - Black Bars

Dec 22, 2015

Spice server/client configuration. I used remote viewer on debian jessie to connect to a guest virtual machine on kvm and everything works fine. It used a spice server / client and qxl. After I upgraded to debian stretch, I suddenly face issues with black bars in the remote client window. Those black bars appear only on the left and right side of the remote viewer window. Also in full screen mode the black bars sadly appear. Maybe the scaling mode is somehow disabled or my screen resolution of the host was wrong calculated related to that i can change the guest screen resolution but the spice remote client keeps its window size with the black bars. I was trying the last couple of days to resolve this issue, unfortunately without success.

CentOS 5 Server :: VNC - Black Screen - Missing Window Managers?

May 19, 2010

I have followed to the letter the wiki HowTo on setting up VNC and it works (sort of). I get a VNC session (doesn't matter whether I connect locally, over ssh, or using a vnc client), but all I get is the dreaded black screen with an xterm top left. If I then execute 'startkde' from within the xterm I get my normal desktop up. What I am however getting, is a new desktop session. And this happens each time I start a vnc session. I.e. I end up with a LOT of user sessions for my username. (As shown up by a 'users' cmd.) Consequently, each new time I start a vnc session, I get <x> (representing the previous nr of vnc logins) number of xterm windows + 1 appearing. I never get the logged on session.

However I've also noticed my .xsession-errors file filling up. I've googled around enough to get the impression that the reason I'm not getting the logged-on session up in vnc is due to a missing window manager. but haven't hit on the right google combo to fix the issue. I can believe there being a missing window manager due the following related story;About a year ago, I went to switch from KDE to Gnome. Decided I didn't want to and then set out to switch back to KDE. Each time I installed/uninstalled via the GUI "Add/Remove Software". Eventually I got back to KDE and it appeared to work since, so I left well enough alone.t is only now attempting to set up VNC, I have come across all these issues. I firmly believe VNC will work as expected if I can resove the apparent missing window manage issue.xstartup

OpenSUSE Install :: SUSE 11.3 On Dell E6410 - Screen Went Completely Black

Feb 27, 2011

I have my brand new Dell latitude e6410 delivered with Windows 7 already installed. I want a dual boot and I decided to try SUSE for the first time. I used the installation DVD, the installation seemed to end up well. The problem is that already at the first reboot, the screen went completely black. By pressing ctrl-alt-del I can reboot the laptop. It seems to me a problem with the graphic card.

My setup is:
Dell Latitude e6410
Intel i5 m560 @2.67 GHz
nVidia NVS 3100M
4Gb DDR ram
Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network connector

If I start in failsafe mode, the X server starts, I have KDE, although with a somewhat sketchy graphic, I can use SUSE almost normally. The main problem in this case being that the system doesn't find any ethernet/wi-fi device, so I cannot connect to the Internet (I'm writing from Win7 right now). I tried choosing the default SUSE boot with the additional boot option "nomodeset" at the grub prompt. This is a suggestion mentioned in another post on this forum, although in that case the problem was coming from a bug dealing with an Intel graphic card. The system goes up but then kde doesn't start. I'm asked to lgin at a prompt. If I try to launch kde from command line (startkde), it complains that the variable $DISPLAY is not setup.

This is where I am now. I'm quite out of ideas, so I want to ask you few things. First stupid question: is the problem coming likely from the drivers of the nvidia graphic card? Second question: in that case, how can I fix it, considering that the linux partition is "isolated"? The fact that in failsafe SUSE doesn't see any network adapter concerns me a bit.

SUSE :: How Do One Make Window Manager To Be More Feature Filled?

Nov 13, 2010

I have Soad Linux installed. E17 environment really works fast for me. But I have a question, how do the one make window manager to be more feature filled? For example other e17 Linux distributions has a full path of file directory on the window tools frame so you can simply click on any directory from this list like "Home/Media/Movies" and you are brought back to the selected directory (Home for example). I managed to find how to enable it, but that section of windows manager doesn;t seem to work well, it is too small horizontally so in order to see other directories the one has to click small arrows and scroll. Resizing doens;t allow to make it bigger, how could I fix that?.

Also how do the one make the mounted mediums list on the left, similar like in gnome windows manager? I found a control panel which lets you choose between KDE, Gnome and LXDE (I think) for e17 But changing between them doesn't seem to change anything. Yes I rebooted the pc so it could take the effect, but no changes were made.
