Mar 17, 2011I have corrupted my /usr/ partition. I thought I recovered my server thingies okay. The problem is with gnome desktop. It won't show the login screen and furthermore there's a lot of error in ldconfig messages -- because of the corrupted /usr/ partition.I started picking out these erring files -- using aptitude purge and the rm command if it cannot be purged...That's how I tried to clean my /usr/ corrupted partition.How do I know I managed to cleanly removed all traces of the desktop gnome? -- also how could I install the desktop again.

Debian Multimedia :: Spice Client Window - Black Bars
Dec 22, 2015Spice server/client configuration. I used remote viewer on debian jessie to connect to a guest virtual machine on kvm and everything works fine. It used a spice server / client and qxl. After I upgraded to debian stretch, I suddenly face issues with black bars in the remote client window. Those black bars appear only on the left and right side of the remote viewer window. Also in full screen mode the black bars sadly appear. Maybe the scaling mode is somehow disabled or my screen resolution of the host was wrong calculated related to that i can change the guest screen resolution but the spice remote client keeps its window size with the black bars. I was trying the last couple of days to resolve this issue, unfortunately without success.

Jul 15, 2009I have a problem with images showing up as black boxes in konqueror, firefox, galeon, etc. I originally thought the problem was Firefox related, so I updated and the problem is still there.
I can't find anything with search that matched this exactly, so if I overlooked.
It seems to me that any time an image is re-sized it shows up as a black box. If I look at a wallpaper that's large, say 1200 x 800 or something, and the browser tries to resize it, it comes up black. However, if I click the same image and it returns to it's actual size, it looks perfect, as it should.
I look at a website I have to individually view each image and this is beginning to drive me crazy!
I have an Acer 5515 Laptop, with a ATI Express X1200 graphics card. I have taken a snapshot of when it happens.

If I press the power button to suspend I can see the login screen with default background for ~1 second before it turns black again. What can I do to fix this issue? Is there a way to login via terminal and do a rollback? Can I use my home folder an personal settings if i reinstall debian and keep the /home partition?

Ubuntu :: Screen Has Gone Completely Black Even After Rebooting
Jan 8, 2011I was playing Minecraft last night when the screen went black. This is apparently a known issue when you're using the wrong java version or something, and I've gotten this crash in the past, but I've always just restarted to get my computer back to normal. However, when I restarted my computer, the monitors would not get any signal from the computer. They just stay black. I tried restarting, shutting down all the way and turning it back on, and nothing works. The computer just stays completely black.
I tried turning on the computer then SSHing into it, but it's not working. I'm not sure if I had it set to auto log in, so it might be that I'm not logged in, or it might be something more insidious, but as I can't see what's happening I don't know what the problem could be.

During this session I have executed some command with "xterm" and "display:0" and I suspect that is causing my problem now: At startup I have an error message in a window, with following message "running in low-graphics mode" and other phrase with something about my keyboard. Then I have some choises, like Start in low graphics or normal mode, and some more, but nothing seems to works and all I get is a 100% black screen with cursor, no ubuntu, and I must reboot PC in XP to come here...

General :: WinXP Remotely In Debian Gnome Desktop Window
Dec 27, 2010I have a WinXP machine that is monopolizing a perfectly good monitor. I would like to use that monitor in my Debian Multiple Monitor setup. Is there a way that I can operate my WinXP machine's desktop remotely from a Gnome window on my Debian machine? In this window I would like to be able to see and use the desktop of the WinXP installation on the other hardware platform just as if I were on the WinXP machine itself. I use Synergy already to share the keyboard and mouse. Hearing about Remote Desktops suggests to me that this might be possible. If it is possible how is it done? What software / hardware is required to accomplish it? Are there any "secrets" that I need or should know of to make this work?

Feb 27, 2011I have my brand new Dell latitude e6410 delivered with Windows 7 already installed. I want a dual boot and I decided to try SUSE for the first time. I used the installation DVD, the installation seemed to end up well. The problem is that already at the first reboot, the screen went completely black. By pressing ctrl-alt-del I can reboot the laptop. It seems to me a problem with the graphic card.
My setup is:
Dell Latitude e6410
Intel i5 m560 @2.67 GHz
nVidia NVS 3100M
4Gb DDR ram
Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network connector
If I start in failsafe mode, the X server starts, I have KDE, although with a somewhat sketchy graphic, I can use SUSE almost normally. The main problem in this case being that the system doesn't find any ethernet/wi-fi device, so I cannot connect to the Internet (I'm writing from Win7 right now). I tried choosing the default SUSE boot with the additional boot option "nomodeset" at the grub prompt. This is a suggestion mentioned in another post on this forum, although in that case the problem was coming from a bug dealing with an Intel graphic card. The system goes up but then kde doesn't start. I'm asked to lgin at a prompt. If I try to launch kde from command line (startkde), it complains that the variable $DISPLAY is not setup.
This is where I am now. I'm quite out of ideas, so I want to ask you few things. First stupid question: is the problem coming likely from the drivers of the nvidia graphic card? Second question: in that case, how can I fix it, considering that the linux partition is "isolated"? The fact that in failsafe SUSE doesn't see any network adapter concerns me a bit.

Jul 22, 2010After running for a while, often after starting a program that displays graphics, such as Shutter, Gimp, Ocular, or maybe simply having previews in Dolphin (as some of my folders default to large previews)most menus, and some windows will go completely black. Some simply grey out (only ksystemlog does this that I have noticed so far)Blindly clicking anywhere on top title bar has no effect (would expect minimize/maximize etc to work if hitAlt-leftmouse or alt-middlemouse will allow window move/resize - black actively conforms to new window size/shape.

Jan 13, 2010So I'm in need of VM'ing a couple OS's to keep from repartitioning and dual booting my desktop. The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

Nov 29, 2009Although I managed fairly quickly to get 3D enabled on the GF 7600GS of my desktop, it took me longer to get 3D up on the GF 9650M GT of my Asus laptop M70Vn. Although I made extensive use of the numerous procedures outlined here, none of them worked and booting my laptop always ended up with me facing a jet-black screen and a completely inexpressive blinking white cursor. My solution was simple: I did not blacklist Nouveau and problems mysteriously disappeared.

Nov 19, 2010I recently bought a second monitor and I had this set up perfectly fine with two panels on my primary display and one on my secondary. I've now gone away for the weekend (leaving the monitor) and I went to turn on my laptop and it didn't work.
When I login to a gnome session (or indeed a failsafe gnome session) I just got two horizontal white bars (where the panels would be). I switch to a terminal, login and run top and see that gnome-panel is on 100%. Running 'killall gnome-panel' does nothing (tried a few times).
I've had to install xfce4 just to type this message. Is there any way I can 'reset' gnome-panel or any other fix? Or even a workaround would be nice. I'm on 9.10 by the way. I am going to upgrade at some point but its not really an option yet.

Jan 18, 2010I'm installing CentOS from the netinstall in Virtualbox now. I was about to post a different thread because Anaconda kept crashing on me. Whenever I would try to uncheck Gnome, clicking next would always fail. I really don't want Gnome, but I need to get the VM installed, so I just accepted the default software selection. (It's not an iso problem either because I originally tried the DVD as well.)I've been using Linux for several years, but I need to use a GUI-less server. I found some instructions on how to disable X by entering runlevel 3, but that's not what I want to do. Is there a meta-package that I can remove "yum remove" and it will remove all the GUI dependencies, or perhaps something like "yum groupremove"?

I assume this is controlled by the window manager which would make it a metacity setting? Anyway, I have an 11in screen on my netbook and I cannot stand having such a big chunk of real estate wasted by such a useless feature, especially when I can perform all the window functions with keyboard shortcuts.

Apr 7, 2011I use KeePass2 to access username/password information in a Dropbox file. This allows convenient access from multiple devices. I can't seem to copy a password to the clipboard on my Linux 2.6.27.41-170.2.117.fc10.x86_64 system, however, in order to supply the password to a prompt in an xterm(1). I've tried both Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V and highlighting and mouse button 2 clicking. The KeePass2 program on the Linux system is executed by Mono.
How can I copy the password to the xterm(1)?
