I have an international skype interview planned in 10 minutes, and my flatmates computer is now opening up using Windows, and Skype is not there! I know he changes back and forth from Windows to Linux on this computer, he lets me use it often. And when I use Linux, it has Skpye! Question: Is there a simple way to reboot the computer back into Linux???
View 4 RepliesI recently pulled out my old computer and decided I would install linux on it so I could get online. The specs aren't the greatest (Pentium II processor, 94 MB RAM, and an 8 GB HDD). I chose AntiX 8.0 as my OS. Anyways, I got through the installation just fine, but when it said "Try rebooting your computer without the CD"...So I did, and what happened? I got that error. I've tried rebooting with different Live CDs to no avail. Is there anything I can do to get back up and running?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two dual boot systems, each running Fedora 11 and a version of Windows.When I boot into Windows after running Fedora on either, the Windows time is wrong and I have to reset it. But, if I reboot from Windows into Windows, the Windows time is right . I think this results from different ways Fedora and Linux keepi track of time and what they do to the real time hardware clock.Could someone explain exactly what is going wrong and how I can resolve the problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that ubuntu 9.10 (but also other distro and in general those that configure the network automatically at startup) crashed if my pc boot directly with a linux kernel at power on.This does not happen if the first boot is done with windows xp and then rebooting the pc and choosing the same linux kernel.Some distro (for example SysrescueCD) that does not configure the network at startup can work but also with these if I try to configure the network using the command ifconfig eth0 the system crashes.My network card is a SiS191 Ethernet and linux recognized it using sis190 module.I suppose that something happen during the first power on, some inizialization done with windows xp but does not done with linux in fact after a reboot made from windows xp without shutdown the pc, with Linux I can configure the network using ifconfig without crash.
Any ideas to solve this without have to boot always windows as first?
I have a weird interaction between Linux and Windows with the HDMI output from my Dell Studio XPS 1645 and a Dell S2409W monitor. Whenever I reboot from Windows back over into Linux, the Input Color Format on the monitor has changed from RGB to YPbPr, and thus the colors are a pink'n'green mess. I can manually change the mode back to RGB but whenever the monitor goes to sleep it will come back as YPbPr! The only way I can fix it is to unplug the power cord and hold the power button for 5 seconds to reset the monitor -- after plugging the power cord back in then the color format will be correct again (RGB.) Or rebooting back over into Windows the color format is correct.
This never happens rebooting from Linux to Linux, Linux to Windows or Windows to Windows -- only from Windows to Linux.This is on Fedora 12 but I don't know that the version particularly matters -- I've only ever used Fedora 12 on this new hardware so I can't say that it does or doesn't work with anything else.
Since there is no notification area any more in 11.04, where is the skype icon of the running skype instance?

I have the recovery disk that HP sent me and I have tried Virtual Box and no luck, so just to avoid any problems I would like to spilt the partitions and set up the grub bootloader so I can have Ubuntu and Windows as a choice a start up.

just installed ubuntu 10.04.1 after using ultimate for abit but having sound issues which i thought could have been os based.Sound works fine from boot and continues fine until i open options and try to configure my mic settings, i get like maybe 5 secs to make adjustments then all my sound dies totally. The icon then shows as speaker with 3 lines next to it and within the configuration for sound my mic hardware vanashes. I cannot get any sound until i restart my computer and so cannot use apps like skype which i do tend too use alot.

Thus, when I boot the computer, I am prompted by a GRUB screen to select Windows Vista loader, Debian, and Debian (recovery mode). I would like to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7. Will this cause an issue with GRUB? Will a Windows 7 loader be added to the list or will a Windows 7 loader replace the Windows Vista loader? Will there have to be a setting change within Debian? Within Windows?

When I installed Ubuntu I partitioned off a section of the HDD that windows is installed on and installed to that new partition. Ubuntu boots and works great but ever since installed if I select windows to boot it just reboot PC all together. Tried making windows default and it booted windows once then went back to normal. I tried to follow suggestions on different post about running "sudo grub" but it is not a command according to my terminal.

I've been searching for and working on possible solutions for several days to no avail. There are some similar posts on various forums but few quite like mine, and solutions I've read haven't solved my problem. I tried booting to the windows 7 repair disk and selecting the repair start up option, but the message tells me no problems were found.
so here's my problem. I am trying to install windows xp on my computer in virtual machine so i can watch netflix on my computer. The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem

I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network.My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

Yes, this includes updates to the kernel.It's free for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Fedora 13 (desktop, not enterprise) OS. I have downloaded the latest iso from the Fedora site (15 32-bit). I am using a netbook and so I have used the tool suggested on the site to copy the iso to my usb drive. Before this I formatted it to fat32 in Windows and then used the tool. When I rebooted with my USB drive, all that shows is a blinking _. I tried repeating the process again but the same happened.
