Red Hat / Fedora :: Nfs Acting Weird For Different Size Partition

Jul 14, 2010

I am setting up a server and trying to access its partition over the nfs on a client machine. Our server has 4 1.5TB disks and the idea was to make a RAID 5 out of it.Now here is the problem:When I used only 1 disk that is nfs partition was of 1.5TB, I got fine speed(30MBps), but with multiple disks whether I am making 3TB (Raid 10) or 4.5TB (Raid 5), I get a really poor speed of 5-6MBps. I/O just waits. But for all above cases, disk I/O locally works fine.Does anyone knows any NFS limitation that is causing this problem?

General :: OS Acting Weird

Jan 7, 2010

Recently I had (and am still having) a lot of trouble with my Fedora 12 installation.First, 3D acceleration and sound stopped working. This was solver by adding my account to the "video" and "audio" groups (I wonder howcome it worked before?).Then, my keyboard stopped working in X. It would work fine in CLI mode, but as soon as I start X not even the Num Lock LED worked! I think I glimpsed that it might be due to a missing keymap or something, but I don't know. I got my computer back by making Xfce's keyboard settings override X, but it still isn't right, and I can't use anything other than Xfce.Recently I tried to burn a CD/DVD but neither Brasero, K3B, nor cdrecord could detect the DVD burner.

General :: Audio In Ubuntu 9.10 Acting Weird

Dec 20, 2009

Just like the title, my Ubuntu 9.10 audio acts really weird to me. Sometimes I can't record anything using the sound recorder and the immediate muting of the loud speaker when i plugged in my headphone doesn't work, but then all of sudden it worked and then the problem might occur again. It's like, in some period the audio works perfectly well as if there's not bug, and then it goes wrong. What I noticed is that the problem reoccur when I shutdown/restart my PC and after few minutes/hours/days it works fine again. Does anyone know why this happens and help me solve this problem?

It shows new music that I've added but when i choose to play it skips to the next track that then skips to the next track, and so forth. Its as if my ipod is filled with songs that don't even last 0.0 seconds! But the songs completely play in Rhythmbox, so I don't think its a problem with the files themselves.

Server :: DNS Server All Sudden Acting Weird

Sep 29, 2010

I have a DNS server that's been working just fine up until now. I have a local domain, "galapagos.office" set up, with several subdomains on it. I've been able to get to all the subdomains just fine for the last couple weeks from several different machines. Now something weird's happening:
I CAN ping wiki.galapagos.office from a local machine
I CAN do an nslookup on wiki.galapagos.office from a local machine
I CAN see wiki.galapagos.office in a browser from a local machine

I CAN'T ping wiki.galapagos.office from the DNS server itself
I CAN'T do an nslookup on wiki.galapagos.office from the DNS server itself
I CAN'T see wiki.galapagos.office in a browser from the DNS server itself

And I COULD do all these things before. I don't know exactly when things went south because I almost never do anything from the DNS server itself.

Hardware :: Partition Size Detected By Testdisk Bigger Than Disk Size

Mar 17, 2011

a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.

I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?

I have an unformatted 15GB partition. How can I add it to my system partition? And is my var folder too big (1.5GB)? If yes, how do I backup its contents and then delete them? Additionally, the File System shows a folder 'media' (89GB) which links the C: drive that contains Windows 7 and my personal files. Should it remain that way or should I separate it? If the latter, how? I just couldn't find any.

Fedora Installation :: Partition Size After F14 Install With Resize Option

Apr 11, 2011

I've just installed Fedora 14 over an old Ubuntu (heron, I think). The old install used a single partition for both / and /home; and I wanted to try to avoid reinstalling /home if possible (but yes, I did back it up). I chose the anaconda option to shrink the old Ubuntu /, and created a new LVM for the Fedora /. This seemed to work perfectly. I mounted the old / on '/host' (an old naming habit), and then mounted individual home dirs into /home using autofs. All seemed fine. However, on my first reboot after the autofs mounts fsck failed. The current situation is as follows:

# fsck /dev/sda6
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.18
e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 15360000 blocks
The physical size of the device is 15359895 blocks
Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt!
Abort<y>? yes

# dumpe2fs /dev/sda6 | grep 'Block count'
dumpe2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Block count: 15360000
# dumpe2fs -o superblock=32768 /dev/sda6 | grep 'Block count'
dumpe2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Block count: 15360000
Same thing for all the other backup superblocks I've tried.
# echo '15360000 4 * p' | dc
61440000
# fdisk -s /dev/sda6
61439583

Resize2fs tells me to run fsck, and complains of a short read if I try to force. Fsck seems to run fine if I say 'no' to the abort prompt, but doesn't change the problem. Filesystem is ext3. Started with debugfs. First used icheck and ncheck to work out which file(s) had been written to the non-existent blocks past the partition size. Fortunately, there was only one. Deleted that file (can restore it from backup later). Quit debugfs. Now resize2fs -p -f worked perfectly. fsck after resizing was clean. Reboot seems happy. As for the origin of the problem, I would guess there's a rounding bug in the code anaconda uses to shrink partitions.

Server :: Increasing Size Of Extended Partition To Allow Creation Of New Partition

May 18, 2010

I've got a server that needs more space. To achieve this we added space (by extending the VMware disk attached to it).Normally this isn't an issue, because we just add an new partition and LVM it from there, but this host predates our deployment of LVM everywhere.

Our current theory is that the unallocated sectors can not be assigned because they aren't part of the extended partition, and thus ... we go in a circle. So what i believe the way forward is to extend sda4 so that i can then create an sda10 inside of it. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I was thinking gparted may do the trick ... but being a server i'm in runlevel3, with no X...
