So first my network appindicator disappeared, then my weather appindicator won't show me the weather, NOW my computer won't let me download anything from the software center and won't let me update anything in the upgrade manager.
View 9 RepliesRecently I had (and am still having) a lot of trouble with my Fedora 12 installation.First, 3D acceleration and sound stopped working. This was solver by adding my account to the "video" and "audio" groups (I wonder howcome it worked before?).Then, my keyboard stopped working in X. It would work fine in CLI mode, but as soon as I start X not even the Num Lock LED worked! I think I glimpsed that it might be due to a missing keymap or something, but I don't know. I got my computer back by making Xfce's keyboard settings override X, but it still isn't right, and I can't use anything other than Xfce.Recently I tried to burn a CD/DVD but neither Brasero, K3B, nor cdrecord could detect the DVD burner.

View 6 Replies View RelatedJust like the title, my Ubuntu 9.10 audio acts really weird to me. Sometimes I can't record anything using the sound recorder and the immediate muting of the loud speaker when i plugged in my headphone doesn't work, but then all of sudden it worked and then the problem might occur again. It's like, in some period the audio works perfectly well as if there's not bug, and then it goes wrong.What I noticed is that the problem reoccur when I shutdown/restart my PC and after few minutes/hours/days it works fine again. Does anyone know why this happens and help me solve this problem?

View 5 Replies View RelatedWe have a nameserver which we moved over from an old server & ip a couple of weeks ago and updated all our dns records.Currently, our dns provider shows the proper records for our server, and if we dig the server at our dns provider we get the results. However, if we ping the server, or dig it and don't specify our server we get the old ip address.An opendns cache check also sporadically returns the proper results from some of its locations but generally returns the old ip address. Does anyone have any suggestions because this bewildering me.

Our server has 4 1.5TB disks and the idea was to make a RAID 5 out of it.Now here is the problem:When I used only 1 disk that is nfs partition was of 1.5TB, I got fine speed(30MBps), but with multiple disks whether I am making 3TB (Raid 10) or 4.5TB (Raid 5), I get a really poor speed of 5-6MBps. I/O just waits.But for all above cases, disk I/O locally works fine.Does anyone knows any NFS limitation that is causing this problem?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently switched back to Ubuntu and I eventually had to sync my new ipod. I've been getting this problem where every time I sync with either GTKpod or Rhythmbox my ipod music is acting weird. It shows new music that I've added but when i choose to play it skips to the next track that then skips to the next track, and so forth. Its as if my ipod is filled with songs that don't even last 0.0 seconds! But the songs completely play in Rhythmbox, so I don't think its a problem with the files themselves.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a DNS server that's been working just fine up until now. I have a local domain, "galapagos.office" set up, with several subdomains on it. I've been able to get to all the subdomains just fine for the last couple weeks from several different machines.Now something weird's happening:
I CAN ping wiki.galapagos.office from a local machine
I CAN do an nslookup on wiki.galapagos.office from a local machine
I CAN see wiki.galapagos.office in a browser from a local machine
I CAN'T ping wiki.galapagos.office from the DNS server itself
I CAN'T do an nslookup on wiki.galapagos.office from the DNS server itself
I CAN'T see wiki.galapagos.office in a browser from the DNS server itself
And I COULD do all these things before. I don't know exactly when things went south because I almost never do anything from the DNS server itself.
We are running a sendmail(8.13.8-2.el5) service on one of our server running RHEl5
When I try to mail from one of the machines connected to the server on our private network, log file on that machine shows that the mail has been sent and also there is no mail in the queue, but when I check the server, there is no mail received, not even any status on log file. Did anyone experience anything like this or any idea about this problem?
since yesterday my 11.04 system behaves real strange. Firstly, i can not use any of my external storage media anymore (detachable cd-rom among them). On several devices i tried to mount, they would not appear in /media/ dir, neither could i see them in Nautilus. I know that the system does recognize them in the usual fashion as before, which i can see in system.log and for example GParted.
The other thing is i can't access my trash anymore - when clicking on it in Nautilus, i get the "Sorry, could not display all the contents of "trash": Operation not supported" message. Last obvious and weird thing was that my Ubuntu One panel personalizations i have made since installing are gone (that is adding and removing icons from there) - it is back to the "original" state which was just after installation.
I didn't notice anything else obvious - apart from the things already mentioned, system seems to work fine.The worthy of mentioning things i've done before these failures was the downloading of system updates and installing of some software (tex-base, monkeyaudio codec, DropBox; actually i've got a shadow of doubt cast on this last one, since installing it required some changes to Nautilus). I don't have any previous kernel to try to load.
Since it's been only a month of usage of ubuntu on my new machine reinstalling it wouldn't hurt me so much, but i would really fancy to find out the root of this strange behavior of the system i am experiencing.
So I just turned my computer on and it was beeping rapidly, and it would stop if I hit "Enter". Also this came on my screen: Cannot set Fray", something like that. It boots fine..just what is that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed Lucid, it created a sound problem. I have a Dell Inspiron e1705. The issue is the subwoofer and the other two speaker in my system do not work in tandem. In prior Ubuntu releases I would fix this problem by making the volume up and volume down button control but the subwoofer and the two speakers (Master+PCM). But with Lucid, I don't seem to have the option to set up my audio due to the "simplification" of the audio bar. I downloaded the Gnome ALSA mixer from the repository, but it doesn't have the function I need either.
Something else I can DL to allow me to get my audio to work? I'm loving everything else in this release, please down let me down! Oh, I've been on ubuntu for 2 years, so I'm not retarded, feel free to give me complicated instruction, but GUI ones are preferred(I remember them in the long run).
I'm running KDE on slack13.1 However i've wrecked my system tray.When i "add widgets" and add "system tray" the widget aligns to the left of screen which means when i minimze windows they just disappear.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been installing/tweaking F12, and I've found something that I can't say I've ever seen or expected to find before: the contents of my ~/Documents folder has lost its permissions and ownership info. I restored it from a backup last night/this morning, and I've rebooted a few times since then. Other folders from the backup are OK, just Documents.I don't know what my options are. I could try to blow it away and restore it, but that doesn't answer what caused it. If there's a "relabel" or something, that might help... though I've never had to do it before. Could it be that after these two-and-some-change years, my hard drive is giving out? Good thing I have a recent backup... but it'd be a shame to lose all my work getting F12 to work again.

This file denies read privileges to root and I?m afraid to chmod until I know for sure what it is.

However, the cd I burned from it seems to bypass the usual Ubuntu menu where you get to choose what you want to do (run the live cd without changing your computer, check the cd for errors, install, etc) and it attempts to install itself!! The installation process halts when some sort of error is encountered.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI don't know any other way to describe it. I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed and before yesterday everything was working flawlessly. Then my mouse started acting erratic and after a few battery changes I narrowed it do to adobe. This is because I was experiencing freezes with my desktop as well as my browser. I use firefox as my default and I couldn't open up tabs or even close the browser. Only way for me to close the browser as to use the windows command ctrl d to minimize firefox, right click and close it. After running ubuntu tweak and then update manager I noticed it pulled down a new version of adobe. Everything worked like a charm until today.
Now I have the same problem. I looked to see what updates were being pulled down that could be causing this weird behaviour. The only thing I can figure is jitsi. However, I've never really used this application. It's frustrating to use ubuntu right now cause I can't do any work. This browser is open in another workspace and if I open another application this will freeze. My taskbar is basically frozen so after I post this I'll have to use ctrl d to minimize this and then right click to close it again.
I use ubuntu 9.04 and well I turned on my GIMP the other day and I see that my info box has changed you know the whatyou've done to the image shower. Well I cant riht click and click the layers anymore it shows like say I hit backspace shows eraseer or clear what happen to the way I could right click it and do whatever. View 2 Replies View RelatedThis just started happening, but I haven't logged out or rebooted in a while, so I'm not sure what could be causing this. I have setup some keyboard shortcuts to use the Win modifier key (Mod4, Super, whatever). The keyboard shortcuts utility in KDE list it as the Win key so that is how I will refer to it. Some example shortcuts: Win+t starts a terminal, Win+m toggles windows maximize mode. I had these setup and they were working fine on this install that I've had for about a month, but they stopped working today. I can still use Ctrl, Alt, and Shift as modifier keys and they work fine.
I open the keyboard shortcuts utility in KDE Control Center (kcontrol) and start to set a new keyboard shortcut. i.e. I click on the button to "build" a keyboard shortcut. I can press the Win key and it shows that it detects it, but when I press the 't' key, the shortcut is just set as 't' instead of Win+t. I can also push shift+win and that shows in the builder but when I press the 't' key, the shortcut is now set to 'shift+t', so it seems like the Win key is acting funky.

I recently bought a pair of Leadtek Winfast DTV Dongle Golds for use in a xbmc/tvheadend based htpc. I'm trying to use the remote, but It appears it is outputting keyboard presses. It also repeats the button presses, as if you were holding down the button on a keyboard, until you press another button (which will do the same), or if you press something on the actual keyboard.
The first issue isn't as mch of a problem, as I can configure xbmc to use it, but the second problem makes it completely unusable.Also, when trying to watch certain channels such as one hd or ten (australian freeview), I get the error "descrambler unavailable".
On a windows system I installed xampp, and let web applications on the computer be acceseable via internet . On a forum I was firmly instructed that it was an unsecure pracsis.Now I saw on utube, that it is possible to install apache and php on ubuntu 10.04 lts desktop edition.
q1: What shall I install to get apache and php and sql databases?
q2: Is runnings web applications that are acceseable via internet on a ubuntu desktop edition with the above descripted software also unacceptable in terms of security, or is it a productive secure platform. I was told that productive platforms are ok to connect to the internet.
I am pretty new to Linux, but I've been installing it on different systems for a month or so, using different distro's, and this is the first problem where I absolutely can not find a single relevant answer in Google. I recently bought an IBM Thinkcentre and set it up to dual boot Mint and windows xp, it worked great everything works except usb's.
#PROBLEM: The ports only recognize devices of any kind (controllers, mouse, flash drive, external hd) if they plugged in before booting, or if they are plugged in while the computer is sleeping.
- The usb's are recognized normally in Windows XP I tried running different live cd's (Fedora, openSUSE, ubuntu) and they all had the same problem (could this be an issue with the defualt linux 2.6 kernel not working properly with my hardware? if so I dont know what to do next) I reinstalled a newer version of Mint... same problem.
by now I have 10 servers for hpc, power computing oriented. My users need to launch several processes using qmake. The users are used to work with ubuntu 9.10, and the software from the repositories is switable for them. I've deployed ubuntu 9.10 to all 10 servers (pxe rocks). By now we work with parallel-ssh and cluster-ssh, which allows as to launch the same process to all servers. With this tools this tools the servers remain as independent but with the same software and the same launched command. Now we would like to go to next step and see all the servers as a single one with all the resources from the other 9 as if was its resources. The difference would be substantial in time to process and also time to design the command to launch.

I update my fstab with /dev/md127 instead of /dev/md0 and it seems to be working ok.What in the heck is going on? Why all of the naming descrepencies? Can someone help me understand what's going on? I have used the same steps on other (and older) distros and haven't had these troubles. (Ubuntu 9 or 10 something and Cent/RHEL 5.5) I've always named the first array md0, and it's always stayed md0 through reboots, etc etc etc...
after some hard times, I finally managed to have my Orange Huawei E1752 HSPA modem running (a USB modem enabling you to surf the net) the only thing is that I have 2 "problems" with this: I cannot find a clean way to eject the stick when I am done using it. when I want to run it, I plug it, it asks me for the PIN code, which I give, then I do the following manipulations: I first run:
