CentOS 5 :: Win Key Not Acting Like A Modifier Key
May 27, 2010
This just started happening, but I haven't logged out or rebooted in a while, so I'm not sure what could be causing this. I have setup some keyboard shortcuts to use the Win modifier key (Mod4, Super, whatever). The keyboard shortcuts utility in KDE list it as the Win key so that is how I will refer to it. Some example shortcuts: Win+t starts a terminal, Win+m toggles windows maximize mode. I had these setup and they were working fine on this install that I've had for about a month, but they stopped working today. I can still use Ctrl, Alt, and Shift as modifier keys and they work fine.
I open the keyboard shortcuts utility in KDE Control Center (kcontrol) and start to set a new keyboard shortcut. i.e. I click on the button to "build" a keyboard shortcut. I can press the Win key and it shows that it detects it, but when I press the 't' key, the shortcut is just set as 't' instead of Win+t. I can also push shift+win and that shows in the builder but when I press the 't' key, the shortcut is now set to 'shift+t', so it seems like the Win key is acting funky.
CentOS version 5.4
KDE version 3.5.4-25.el1.centos.1
Using: Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (Gnome). I have a physical disability which makes pressing the <Ctrl><Alt> key combination very hard, but it would be nice to have that key combination available to me for keyboard shortcuts. I've never got on with 'Sticky Keys' and don't want to use that as a solution, it takes me so long that it is self-defeating as a shortcut key combination. I use a reduced size keyboard, a Cherry ML4100 (image below), which has a 'Fn' key between the left <Ctrl> and <Alt> keys, this 'Fn' key when pressed in conjunction with F1 or F2 will simulate a F11/F12 key press (see image), it also allows the use of a 'num pad' with the u,i,o,p, etc. keys to the right of the centre of the keyboard but which I never use.
In System -> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts I can not currently use the 'Fn' key at all, it is totally ignored, the system just does not recognize it. Eg. If I press <Fn><A> only 'A' is recognized. What I'd like to do is somehow map the 'Fn' key so that when pressed at the same time as <Ctrl> it simulates a <Ctrl><Alt> key press, while still leaving 'Fn' to work as usual generating F11/F12 key presses when F1/F2 is pressed with it. Alternatively if I could set up the 'Fn' key to work as a shortcut with any other key, EG. <Fn><LeftArrow> to switch to the left workspace, and then map F11 and F12 to another key combination - in fact this second solution would be preferable.
However the xev utility, which I had hoped would provide me with a key mapping code for 'Fn', does not even register when 'Fn' is pressed on its own, but when 'Fn' is pressed with F1 it gives what I suppose is the the F11 key code (it is a different code to what is shown when F1 is pressed on its own). I am beginning to suspect that what I am trying to do is not possible. My disability means that using keyboard shortcuts is a really good way of my doing things, much faster than the mouse, so I'd like a lot set up, and I mean far more than most people would ever use, including starting a dozen or so regularly used apps, I'm running out of what I can do with <Ctrl><Shift>, so really need to simulate <Ctrl><Alt> or have the 'Fn' key active when setting my Keyboard Shortcuts, EG. <FN><A>.
I've been an ubuntu user for a few years now, I just never joined the forums since I never really had problems with my installations. Today, however, is completely different. I recently converted my server from windows 2k3 to ubuntu server 10.04, and have been setting ssh and VNC so that I can access it remotely. Both x11vnc and ssh are installed and working fine, as I can connect to the server from my Macbook, but here is where it gets weird. When in VNC, none of the modifier keys work(shift, ctrl, alt, super) and caps lock only works half the time. (I have to press it twice to turn it on and twice to turn it off).

I have a MX 518 which as 5 additional buttons, I'm trying to bind the thumb button to Control or Shift. I'm fighting against it since yesterday, I tried many things : easystroke, imwheel, xbindkeys/xvkbd. I'm a bit new to Linux so I can still miss something very important. I read a tutorial about that mouse, all went well but it isn't explained how to set up what I wish.
I cannot set mod3 to the Shift_R key with xmodmap. Code: matthew@lokal:~/.fvwm/Default$ xmodmap -e "add mod3 = Shift_R" X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 118 (X_SetModifierMapping) Value in failed request: 0x17 Serial number of failed request: 11 Current serial number in output stream: 11
As I'd like to be able to fully control my desktop with both my keyboard and my mouse, I wrote a .xbindkeysrc.scm script to make two of my eight mouse buttons work as modifiers. For instance, b:9 + wheel now changes volume.
Only problem is, I accomplish this by emulating a key press with a modifier held, and the modifier seems to stick randomly after the mouse buttons have been released.
I would be very happy if anyone could point out the errors in the script below (or with the software used, I don't know how reliable xvkbd is).
Code: (define (display-n str) "Display a string then newline" (display str)
[Code].....
The first part declares some base functions for the keystrokes to be sent with xvkbd. Also, the function to reset the bindings on relesae of the modifier is here. (As you may see, I already tried to put in some code to specifically reset the modifiers, with no results.) The second part contains the default bindings for buttons 10-12 when no modifier is held. The third and fourth part specify the actions when modifiers are held, usually to send a keystroke or to run a command. The fifth part performs the bindings for the first, second and third level.
I've written my custom keyboard layout, where I'm trying to remap the Menu key as Super. The key gets remapped, however Super is not recognized as a modifier key, unlike with a standard layout I've used as a comparison. What puzzles me is that the left Windows key, which I never refer to in my custom layout stops working as well.
Here is the relevant section of my custom layout:
Output of xev command shows the key has been remapped correctly:
I would like to use Caps Lock as its own UNIQUE modifier key (not merely replace it with Ctrl). I have figured out how to do this on windows but not yet in Ubuntu. Here is what I'm looking for:
1. When I press "Caps Lock" on its own, it is equivalent to the Escape key (or at least sends the "escape" command). 2. When I press Caps Lock + <new key>, it does other stuff.
I have figured out how to get EITHER ONE of these to work, but not both at the same time. For example, I have figured out how to turn Caps Lock into the unique "Super" modifier using xbindkeys and xmacro (this achieves #2). I have also figured out how to switch the escape and capslocks keys altogether to achieve #1. But I can't figure out how to get both outcomes at the same time!
Predefinations: From here on in, I will refer to the "Windows Key" on the keyboard as the "Super Key" (Linux terminology)
Consider a user's experience in Windows: * UseCaseA: Accessing the start menu --> "Super Key" open the menu. * UseCaseB: Open the "run dialogue" --> "Super Key" + R * UseCaseC: Open win explorer --> "Super Key" + E * etc.
In GNOME/ubuntu however, apparently there is this odd limitation in that the "Super Key" cannot be both a standalone key, and a modifier key. Is it still the case? Currently running Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. Apparently in KDE this works, and in Windows it's worked since Windows95. How can we achieve this functionality in Ubuntu/gnome?
I have many bindings on the control key. I cannot ctrl-click to open a new tab now. How do I change which modifier to use? I do not want to change the accelkey globally, only for opening a link in a new tab!
I never use the <AppsKey> (or <Menu>), and I want to convert it to a modifier key, e.g. Mod4, Mod5, etc. So as to utilize some shortcuts like <Mod5>+<Shift>+J.
The iso file I downloaded passed the md5sum check. However, the cd I burned from it seems to bypass the usual Ubuntu menu where you get to choose what you want to do (run the live cd without changing your computer, check the cd for errors, install, etc) and it attempts to install itself!! The installation process halts when some sort of error is encountered.
Recently I had (and am still having) a lot of trouble with my Fedora 12 installation.First, 3D acceleration and sound stopped working. This was solver by adding my account to the "video" and "audio" groups (I wonder howcome it worked before?).Then, my keyboard stopped working in X. It would work fine in CLI mode, but as soon as I start X not even the Num Lock LED worked! I think I glimpsed that it might be due to a missing keymap or something, but I don't know. I got my computer back by making Xfce's keyboard settings override X, but it still isn't right, and I can't use anything other than Xfce.Recently I tried to burn a CD/DVD but neither Brasero, K3B, nor cdrecord could detect the DVD burner.
If I right-click a file and select VLC, I get immediate playback from VLC. Everything seems fine until I hit Ctrl+O to select another file. It seems to freeze, but it actually just takes a few minutes to get going. So I opened VLC via a terminal, then hit Ctrl+O,
I don't know any other way to describe it. I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed and before yesterday everything was working flawlessly. Then my mouse started acting erratic and after a few battery changes I narrowed it do to adobe. This is because I was experiencing freezes with my desktop as well as my browser. I use firefox as my default and I couldn't open up tabs or even close the browser. Only way for me to close the browser as to use the windows command ctrl d to minimize firefox, right click and close it. After running ubuntu tweak and then update manager I noticed it pulled down a new version of adobe. Everything worked like a charm until today.
Now I have the same problem. I looked to see what updates were being pulled down that could be causing this weird behaviour. The only thing I can figure is jitsi. However, I've never really used this application. It's frustrating to use ubuntu right now cause I can't do any work. This browser is open in another workspace and if I open another application this will freeze. My taskbar is basically frozen so after I post this I'll have to use ctrl d to minimize this and then right click to close it again.
I was working on our PC and screwed up my logical partition. Not much of a concern there but the problem starts when I was trying to repair them. My gparted says that my whole HD is empty. In fact, when I try to install an OS, it wanted to install it on the whole HD (80-G).
We have a nameserver which we moved over from an old server & ip a couple of weeks ago and updated all our dns records.Currently, our dns provider shows the proper records for our server, and if we dig the server at our dns provider we get the results. However, if we ping the server, or dig it and don't specify our server we get the old ip address. An opendns cache check also sporadically returns the proper results from some of its locations but generally returns the old ip address. Does anyone have any suggestions because this bewildering me.
by now I have 10 servers for hpc, power computing oriented. My users need to launch several processes using qmake. The users are used to work with ubuntu 9.10, and the software from the repositories is switable for them. I've deployed ubuntu 9.10 to all 10 servers (pxe rocks). By now we work with parallel-ssh and cluster-ssh, which allows as to launch the same process to all servers. With this tools this tools the servers remain as independent but with the same software and the same launched command. Now we would like to go to next step and see all the servers as a single one with all the resources from the other 9 as if was its resources. The difference would be substantial in time to process and also time to design the command to launch.
I'm running Debian (Squeeze) and I have a toshiba portege m700. It has five buttons on the front just under the screen, which are the only ones accessible when you flip the screen over into tablet mode. One of them is for rotating the screen, and another is for switching to external display. I want to remap the remaining three to control, alt and super so that I can use shortcuts with the stylusThe problem is, when I used showkey to find out the key codes, I found out that each button generates more than one key code:Button 1:
key 126 press >> super_r, although this is distinct from the actual super key (125) key 7 press >> 6 key 7 release key 126 release
after some hard times, I finally managed to have my Orange Huawei E1752 HSPA modem running (a USB modem enabling you to surf the net) the only thing is that I have 2 "problems" with this: I cannot find a clean way to eject the stick when I am done using it. when I want to run it, I plug it, it asks me for the PIN code, which I give, then I do the following manipulations: I first run:
usb_modeswitch it "creates" 2 files /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1, what I check with: ls -l /dev/ttyUSB*
then I use the usbserial module to handle the stick: modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x141b then I check that the stick is working with: dmesg|grep GSM that outputs something like: USB Serial support registered for GSM modem (1-port) option 1-5:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected usb 1-5: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0 option 1-5:1.1: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected usb 1-5: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB1 option: v0.7.2:USB Driver for GSM modems finally I choose the "Orange Default" in the list of available connections in the network manager icon on the panel and I am finally connected The thing is, that when I am done, I just go to the same list and then click "disconnect" I go on "Computer" and left click on the SD 4Gb storage (the SD card also in the stick) safely remote drive or something like this. Then I thought that unmounting the device would work,
[Code]...
As a newbie (and especially regarding the use of those modems) I am running out of ideas to "eject" it cleanly, I also checked in the /dev/ file to see that the ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1 files are present
On my system Firefox 4 seemed to be taking its sweet time "looking up" addresses, but when it found the page it blazed on the render. I poked around on the net and found a few suggestions to speed up the "look up". So I thought I would share... I aimed for the fewest changes, so not to break too many things or make a big mess. (Warning moving and changing things that you don't know about, in the about:config can goof up Firefox so double check your settings) place about:config in the address bar and hit enter
You should get a really long list of things
In the search bar put network.dns.disableIPv6
My default value was set to false, go ahead and set it to true. Right click and Toggle. Clear out the search bar where network.dns.disableIPv6 was, and put in network.http.pipelining You should have three listings Right click on network.http.pipelining and Toggle so "true" shows for the value. Next, right click on network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and Modify, a box will pop up, replace the default 4 with 8. Close the about:config
Now test your Forefox performance. These three small changes, made a world of difference for me. Its now comparably fast as chromium. If you disagree with what I did, or want to let me know of any other "safe" speedups let me know. PS. If you don't see any improvements performance-wise or your from the future and do use IPv6, it would be best to go and take these settings back to the default Firefox settings.
I'm a new user of openSUSE and just installed it on my HP DV6 computer. I've upgraded to Tumbleweed although the problem exists in base openSUSE 11.4 as well, whenever I'm typing sometimes it seems that a particular key(Most likely the last one) get's sort of "stuck" automatically and gets repeated 10-12 times. This problem did not exist in Windows, Ubuntu or Fedora.
switched recently to 11.2 and it works fine for me as workstation I want to set up a router separating a part of the network and also acting as a firewall/proxy... Configured 2 Ethernet Interfaces, checked Ip forwarding in Yast but it does not forward the packets from the "internal" to the "external" network. Hovewer after I set up my router as default for machines on internal network I can ping the external interface but no adress on external network (particularly the one of the default router) !!! From the router I can reach both networks and the net via default gateway on external. Tried to:
a) switch firewall completely off b) iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT c) masquarading internal adresses to the external network
my interfaces configuration looks like: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:13:D4:E3:A2:7B inet addr:192.168.1.34 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::213:d4ff:fee3:a27b/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
I use ubuntu 9.04 and well I turned on my GIMP the other day and I see that my info box has changed you know the whatyou've done to the image shower. Well I cant riht click and click the layers anymore it shows like say I hit backspace shows eraseer or clear what happen to the way I could right click it and do whatever. Here is what I'm talking about[IRL]..
So first my network appindicator disappeared, then my weather appindicator won't show me the weather, NOW my computer won't let me download anything from the software center and won't let me update anything in the upgrade manager.
I want to use 2 network cards on a notebook (one internal and one by USB). I don't want the typical "internet sharing", so I want it to act really as a switch:
Other room <== 1Gb/s ==> Notebook <== 100Mb/s ==> network switch with more computers.
I want to do it because i want to use the 1Gb/s link from the other room to the "servers" room, and then the rest of servers will run at 100Mb/s. I wanna all my computers in the same network, like there's no notebook in the middle, so the Notebook will act as a switch (and a server). i wanna (assumming all of this is possible): Code: > [network switch] 1Gb/s
I am setting up a server and trying to access its partition over the nfs on a client machine. Our server has 4 1.5TB disks and the idea was to make a RAID 5 out of it.Now here is the problem:When I used only 1 disk that is nfs partition was of 1.5TB, I got fine speed(30MBps), but with multiple disks whether I am making 3TB (Raid 10) or 4.5TB (Raid 5), I get a really poor speed of 5-6MBps. I/O just waits. But for all above cases, disk I/O locally works fine.Does anyone knows any NFS limitation that is causing this problem?
I have an EPIA M10000N (VIA Nehemiah 1GHz integrated CPU) motherboard (square MB each side 17cm) in a GA610 case. These last two links show the situation quite well.I have neither a CD/DVD drive, nor a floppy drive in the case. Only a hard drive, the motherboard, and the power supply. As you can see in the pictures, the whole thing is cooled by a 4cm fan on the CPU heat sink, and another 4cm fan at the rear of the power supply. This is rather noisy (and unbearable in a living room!).After looking (not that hard, though...) for a solution, I did not find a proper (less than 20dB, and good quality) solution. So the living-room PC became a server. It's either that of throwing it away, anyway. Having nothing to loose, I want to try something. And I'd like to have your opinion, dear reader.I want to:
- remove both 4cm fans, - remove the cover from the power supply, - cut a round hole on top of the case, - fit a 12 or 14cm fan on the lower side of the round hole, right above both the CPU and the power supply.
I'm new to this cooling stuff. I saw that a 4cm fan can extract up to 5 CFM of air, whereas a big fan can extract at least 60 or 70 CFM!Changing two noisy 5 CFM fans with a single silent 60 CFM fan seems OK to me.What do you think of the idea?Next, for better reuse, I may buy a Noctua 14cm NF-S14 FLX. It is big and silent, and 71 to 110 CFM seems a lot! And its fixation holes match those of a standard 12cm fan, thanks to the unusual shape Do you approve?
I still hesitate a bit because: - the Noctua NF-P12 1300 might be more sturdy due to its regular shape... - the Enermax Magma UC-MA12 might be a better choice because it can be washed... on the other hand, because of that, it may get loose with time...
I have a Debian 5 system with two nics. eth0 is set up with dhcp-client which will receive a public ip address from my isp. The eth1 will be for my local network and I want to use dhcp-server daemon to serve addresses to my internal network. The area I am confused about is how transmissions are getting sent between nics. I've been told to enable tcp forwarding but I don't understand how that would work since the nics have different network addresses... unless tcp forwarding is basically nat or something..
Just like the title, my Ubuntu 9.10 audio acts really weird to me. Sometimes I can't record anything using the sound recorder and the immediate muting of the loud speaker when i plugged in my headphone doesn't work, but then all of sudden it worked and then the problem might occur again. It's like, in some period the audio works perfectly well as if there's not bug, and then it goes wrong. What I noticed is that the problem reoccur when I shutdown/restart my PC and after few minutes/hours/days it works fine again. Does anyone know why this happens and help me solve this problem?
