I've installed Linux quite a few times on many different computers and for some reason, I'm stumped.
I went to ubuntu.com and burned myself a boot-disk. Afterwards I went to my dad's original ME box and when I tried deleting the partition I got an error that said, "Could not change partitions, cause the disk could not be locked".
This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...
In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.
When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.
First laptop, first try:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
"use entire disk" works perfectly.
Second laptop, first try:
Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.
Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.
I have two partitions on my HDD. A Windows XP (hd0,2) and an Ubuntu 9.10 (hd0,1).I have been using the Windows mainly and ran a program that changes the HDD's serial number. Now when I boot up and Grub loads, I try to access the Windows partition and get the following error:
Error: No Such Device: 2e3857fb3857c08f
I am still able to boot the Ubuntu partition but can not seem to get grub to point to the Windows partition any more. This is very frustrating as I really need to get back into that partition soon.
I am trying to install fedora15, my devices are as follows:
/dev/sda1- contains windows recovery
/dev/sda2- contains windows vista
/dev/sda3- free space
/dev/sda4- where fedora10 is existing.
Basically I want to scrap the fedora 10 in /dev/sda4 and install fed15 on the place (ext3). During the installation process fedora asked me, Which type of installation you want? I choose 'create custom layout'.
Then in the next window that appeared I choose /dev/sda4. Then it gives me four options like
Create Edit Delete Reset
I want to know what does this Delete mean. What will it do, will is erase all the older partitions within /dev/sda4 i made for fedora10 (previously I made three partitions /boot, swap, /) or will erase /dev/sda4 itself. I am scared to continue installation further.
trying to update a 11.1 installation. As I start the installation I get a message "openSuse 11.0 partition /dev/sda5 Change the mount-by to any other method for all partitions." Also the message said go back and reboot and make the change. What is this all about, how do I do this.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI ve read this page and tried some methodes such as opening nautilus with"gksudo nautilus" and then checking (the now root?) trash bin.Ive got a ext4 formated truecrypt container which has a size of 400GB. After I have deleted all the files in it nautilus tells me that I now have only about 100gb free space but I cant see any files in the container anymore.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.04 installed. When I run Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD and I start GParted I see that there is a "key" on my swap partition marking it as locked I guess. When I right click, I cannot select "Delete" option. What does this mean? What if I want to rearange my partitions sizes including swap partition for whatever reason?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have presently a (working) boot dedicated partition, where grub stuff resides, but I want to change it to a common "/boot" folder in the root partition (in a different hdd). For some reason I can't do it. The first thing I did was to copy all the things that are in the boot partition to a boot folder on the root partition. After that, I tried: grub-install /dev/hdc1 (which is odd but it's where the root partition actually is)
When I did it from the linux I have installed on my hdd, it actually did something, I don't remember all the output (except that there was something about it not being able to access hda, which is oddly the dvdrom), but it didn't work. From a live CD, the same command (grub-install /dev/hdc1) is answered with: Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device. From grub's own prompt, the things are more or less the same. First of all, it does not find stage1, even though I did copy the content from the boot partition to a boot folder in the root partition.
I tried to proceed, anyway, with root (hd1,0) and setup (hd1,0) (which is /dev/hdc1, according with the "geometry" info given by grub). "Root" is accepted, but "setup" is answered with: Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no Error 2: Bad file or directory type But the files are there. I can't "cat" the menu.lst from grub though, unlike with the actual working boot partition. The same error message. From the terminal, however, it's all there. I tried with /dev/hdc1 both mounted and unmounted, the same message. So, basically I have two questions, I guess:
1 - can I really do this sort of thing running a linux installed on a hdd, rather than a live cd, or is the live cd preferable for some reason?
2 - what am I missing?
(A note that may worth making is that I'm using the soon-to-be deprecated grub version, 0.9 or something, not grub2. I think it shouldn't be a problem since I've installed the system with the old version to begin with, but that may be irrelevant, I don't really know)
I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

I was updating from 10.04 to 10.10 earlier today when my laptop shutoff in the middle. I fixed a grub error by reinstalling it with a live-cd, and found out I had a "kernel panic-not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on" waiting for me. I booted an alternative kernel and tried fixing things from there, but got "general error mounting filesystem". So, I tried a live-cd and when I mount the partition, it is read-only. I tried running fcsk to no availThe only thing I could find helpful was this."It's probably because your filesystem has suffered a failure - it is configured by default (in /etc/fstab) to remount as read-only in such cases in order to minimise the risk of data loss."
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had Ubuntu 10.04 on this machine and wanted to convert it to a dual boot. It's a 500GB hard drive. The HDD had 3 partitions: one really big one, and two swap areas of about 6 GB each. I ran GParter and carved the big partition into a 100GB partition and a 400GB partition (less the swap areas). Then I installed Windows XP into the 100GB partition, then installed Ubuntu 10.04, selecting the "create dual boot" option.
It dual boots beautifully, and everything runs just fine. But I find that Ubuntu has split the 400 GB partition into two 200 GB partitions, and one of them is simply off-limits. I can see it, but I can't write to it. The attached png shows the Disk Utility, with the mystery partition selected. Its only contents is a folder called lost+found; I cannot open it.
I am trying to use rsync to keep 2 machines in sync. I get the following error sometimes. If I rerun the rsync it usually works.

I installed Ubuntu as shown in the wiki and when I went to restart it gave me a lovely blinking cursor and nothing else. So I held down option, loaded into osx, reinstalled rEFIt and got my menu on startup. Unfortunately, the partition sync tool doesn't seam to be working, it gives me an error: Status: MBR partition table is invalid, partitions overlap. Error: Not Found returned from gptsync.efi
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am installing 10.10 on my PC. I have changed the hardware and the previous install was for a x64 I now have x32. I ran the live disk and have selected install. I am now on the partition page, (manual). I am happy with the concept of partitioning and which partition is which, but I can only change the linux partition. At the moment I have @60G NTFS, 1G swap and @18G Linux. I want to reduce linux partition to about 12G (which is fine I've done that) I now have free space. I want to increase the swap partition to 2G and the remainder to be added to the NTFS partition. However, I can't add any more disk space to the latter partitions. The Swap partition has the space bar available, but the increase is greyed out and on the NTFS partition, there is no option at all.

When I reach the partition part , it doesn't detect the Windows 7 os , and doesn't detect any hard disk partitions ( it sees the whole hard disk as one unallocated partition ). I faced the same problem when I tried Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. But after that it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore looking thing. It goes nowhere from there. It usually goes to a black screen after the hp logo, that says GRUB loading.

When I was going through the procedure it gave me the option of a guided partition of my harddrive... however there was an error. At this stage I unplugged my external harddrive because it's sometimess a bit dodgy and restarted the installation process. However everytime since that I have tried to install, it only gives me the option of erasing the entire disk or specifying the partitions manually

My entire harddisk is shown as unallocated free space. Also gparted is not detecting the partitions as well. I am currently not facing any problems with my partitions in windows xp. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have reinstalled XP and conseqently messed up Grub and lost Ubuntu. I am trying to do a fresh install but the installer insists on trying to overwrite the whole disk. I downloaded the alternate instal ISO as this has got over this problem in the past but this also wanted to overwrite the whole disk. It recognises the Sata Raid array as being nfts (this is my main data disk) but it doesn't recognise the existing partitions on my main disk:
18G windows
18G Old Ubuntu
113G nfts data disk
Wanting to dual boot XP with UBUNTU. Live CD verified good.

Originally I had two partitions for Windows xp of 100 gig each. I cleared / backed up the second partition and created two 50 gig partitions, splitting the second into two linux (using Gparted) partitions labelled root and swap.
Disk Utility sees this hdd as a RAID component. It is connected through a RAID controller.
The installer (in allocate drive space step) doesn't see them for some reason.
Hardware:
AMD Athlon 64+clawhammer processor
Asus A8N-SLI mobo

2 Gig RAM

I've installed Arch Linux onto my Western Digital SATA drive.I love it, best ever, however, I need the fglrx proprietry driver for better 3-d performace, and decided to create a new partition. I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it

I was upgrading Ubuntu to Natty last night, but it crashed just before completion. Then, I couldn't mount the drive so I'm now booting it from the live disc. I go into gparted, but it gives me an error saying:
Can't have a partition outside the disk!
I have /root and /home in separate partitions, so I must find a way so that /home can survive. I've run testdisk and this is what I get:

There are only 2 Linux partitions, Linux and Swap, so it seems that my /home has disappeared! Is there a way to recover it? Also, how do I fix Gparted's complaint?
I have first installed Windows7 to sda2 (sda1 being the MBR). Then I installed Ubuntu as follows: sda3 /boot, sda5 swap (sda4 being the Extended partition), sda6 /, sda7 /home. So far so good. Windows and Ubuntu worked fine. I also planned to create another partition for data and two more partitions for Arch Linux. And here is the problem.I just assumed that the Extended partitions were created logical but actually they are also primary. So, as things stand, all my 7 partitions are primary and I cannot create any more partitions.I must've erred somewhere during the Ubuntu installation. Is it possible ti change the Extended partitions into logical, without affecting all the stuff within? Any ideas? Otherwise I will have to delete everything after Windows and install Ubuntu again, making sure that I create logical partitions in the Extended part
