Ubuntu Installation :: Erasing The Entire Disk Or Specifying The Partitions Manually

I am trying to install ubuntu 9.10 alongside windows on my laptop's harddrive. When I was going through the procedure it gave me the option of a guided partition of my harddrive... however there was an error. At this stage I unplugged my external harddrive because it's sometimess a bit dodgy and restarted the installation process. However everytime since that I have tried to install, it only gives me the option of erasing the entire disk or specifying the partitions manually
I have used GParted several times but I only know how to clone a single partition. I am looking for a way to clone and entire drive that has several partitions, along withthe MRB, unpartitioned space and everything else in one step. I have a 500 GB drive that is going out and I want to clone it to a 1 TB drive so I don't have to reinstall 3 different OSs and fix the GRUB. One of the other OSs is on anther drive so I'm not sure that it would work even if I can clone everything exactly. I'm not sure if the drive that is failing is the one with the MBR on it or not. how to do this in GParted or know another good program I can run from a live CD to do this?
When I choose the manual partitioning scheme (the bottom radio button),I cannot specify mountpoints manually for some of my partitions.I have tried clicking in the mountpoint box, to no avail.The only choices I have are in the dropdown menu.My current partitions include ones for /data, /storage, and /art,in addition to/and /home.
I have figured out manually setting the swap partition and setting "/" as the mount point for the primary partition during install. If during install, I want to create another partition to keep the OS separate from installed programs and such, to be able to do a clean install every 6 months and not loose everything (or anything) I have done prior.
This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...
In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.
When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.
First laptop, first try:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
"use entire disk" works perfectly.
Second laptop, first try:
Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.
Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.
I got an ubiquity error when installing using erase entire disk option.Install just hangs after this error. I have an oldish p4 pc, 40 gb hard drive with faulty windows xp installed on it.
Is it possible to mount a 2nd hard disk without erasing the data that is already on it? If so, what command must I enter. The system recognizes that the disk is there, I just can't access the data because it hasn't been mounted.
I'm trying to resize a partition on an IDE hard disk to use the entire disk but can not get more than a 309GB partition. I can get 295, 300, 301, 302GB, etc... fine but start getting problems with anything over 309GB. I get the following error with 310GB or more:

I am installing 10.10 on my PC. I have changed the hardware and the previous install was for a x64 I now have x32. I ran the live disk and have selected install. I am now on the partition page, (manual). I am happy with the concept of partitioning and which partition is which, but I can only change the linux partition. At the moment I have @60G NTFS, 1G swap and @18G Linux. I want to reduce linux partition to about 12G (which is fine I've done that) I now have free space. I want to increase the swap partition to 2G and the remainder to be added to the NTFS partition. However, I can't add any more disk space to the latter partitions. The Swap partition has the space bar available, but the increase is greyed out and on the NTFS partition, there is no option at all.
how to partition. I was getting sick of having to backup my data every time I had to reinstall Ubuntu, so someone recommend that I partition my hard drive so that I could store all my personal files ( documents, music, and vidoes ) onto the seperate partition. However I don't know how to do this. Furthermore when a new version of Ubuntu is release I always pick the install on the entire hard drive so the partition i installed would end up being deleted. How do you install Ubuntu by manually specifying the partitions.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my laptop HP pavilion 3046ee . When I reach the partition part , it doesn't detect the Windows 7 os , and doesn't detect any hard disk partitions ( it sees the whole hard disk as one unallocated partition ). I faced the same problem when I tried Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
I tried to install ubuntu 10.10 today through livecd. but the partitions in my 60gb samsung harddisk are not detected. My entire harddisk is shown as unallocated free space. Also gparted is not detecting the partitions as well. I am currently not facing any problems with my partitions in windows xp. I tried the solution given here (to no avail): [URL]. I have had no such problems with previous versions of ubuntu.
I have reinstalled XP and conseqently messed up Grub and lost Ubuntu. I am trying to do a fresh install but the installer insists on trying to overwrite the whole disk. I downloaded the alternate instal ISO as this has got over this problem in the past but this also wanted to overwrite the whole disk. It recognises the Sata Raid array as being nfts (this is my main data disk) but it doesn't recognise the existing partitions on my main disk:

Originally I had two partitions for Windows xp of 100 gig each. I cleared / backed up the second partition and created two 50 gig partitions, splitting the second into two linux (using Gparted) partitions labelled root and swap.
Disk Utility sees this hdd as a RAID component. It is connected through a RAID controller.
The installer (in allocate drive space step) doesn't see them for some reason.

I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?
Can I delete the ext and swap partitions from disk management on windows 7 ? Because I want to install a fresh new copy of ubuntu 10.10 . I know it would affect windows 7 boot up.I can handle it by system restore Anyway can I do it or not ?
I have various drives and partitions that I have been mounting through fstab, but sometimes I had to do it manually, but now, I can't get them to mount at all. At first I thought it might be a disk failure, but booting to a Live CD shows all the drives working fine. when the entries are added into fstab, $mount -l shows them as mounted to their relevant mount points, but the data does't show in either terminal or dolphin?
Typing $umount /dev/drive always returns /dev/drive not mounted.
When I comment out the entries in fstab and reboot and try a manual mount, I always get /dev/drive already mounted or /mount/point busy. $mount -l does not show any mount entry points for the drive. My /home/user partition is now full as I can't save data on the other drives, so I don't know if this is an issue. Also I use a mixture of encrypted partitions and non encrypted partitions, but this wasn't an issue before. Checking some of the logs didn't show any errors. The problem seemed to start when gdd was saving data to a partition mount point I thought was mounted but wasn't. I have since removed that data and even created a new mount point.
I am definitely non-techy, non-geeky, a GUI guy really, but learning steadily - I have been using Linux for a while now, have just moved on to Ubuntu and find it really great to use - I now feel confident enough to have just Ubuntu Linux on my Sony Vaio laptop (at the moment I have dual boot with Windows XP)
however there are just a few Windows programs that I need to use that will not run under Wine
so I would value comments/advice on my 'grand plan'
1) re-format the Windows partition so that Ubuntu can use the entire hard disk (I don't know the best way to acheive this - is it to reinstall Ubuntu using all available disk space? or is it better to just format over the Windows partition and treat it as a second hard disk?)
2) install VirtualBox and use a version of Windows as a guest OS so I can use those Windows programs when I need to - I understand this is easier than having to reboot the computer to get access to Windows
I have win7 and ubuntu on a 250gb hard drive. I would like to move this to a 1tb drive. Is it possible to clone the entire hard drive, including the MBR? Thought about doing a disk image but unsure if this is the answer. I am using win7 64 pro and ubuntu 10.10.
I deleted my hd from an ubuntu 10.10 liveCD system by trying to create a new partition table with gparted. I just wanted to restore the partition table and clicked on "create partition table"apply.Now the hole hd is an unallocated file system, so without any partitions. There had been 3 ext4 partitions.
Because I did it from an liveCD, all data should be save? Is there a way to search for partitions on the hard disk and get a new old partition table and write it to the mbr?I searched a lot already (with a very slow mobile internet connection)..

To erase all old files, I plan on burning an Ubuntu live CD and enter in the terminal:
And leave sda1 and sda4 untouched just in case the new owner wants to reinstall Windows in the future.
But how should I use the free 75GB ? Install Ubuntu on a 35GB extended partition and leave the remaining 40GB empty for XP, if wanted? Or should I use the entire 75GB for Ubuntu ?
Has anyone configured a linux installation using an entire disk as swap space? I'm thinking about doing this with one or two 250G hard drives. We are experimenting with very large swap space.I would think that would be feasible, and actually faster with more disks. But I've never tried it.
I want to duel boot XP and ubuntu, but have been using ubuntu for quite some time. I want to add a windows section to my computer - but how do I do this with out erasing ubuntu?
I got myself a dell laptop from the local computer store. Its a used machine with Windows Vista Home Basic on it. I want to load Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 though so I can do perl development. BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.
I'm using windows 7 now and I want to install ubuntu as the main OS to the current C:drive(which has installed windows currently) but with keeping the data in other ntfs drivers(D:, E:, F: ) on my hard disk. I can't take backups of all data in other drivers and if that data erased with ubuntu installation I will face a very big problem in future. So how to install ubuntu 10.10 only for a one drive(c: drive) without erasing the data on other ntfs drivers? and I uses nvidia 8 series graphic card and are there any special things to follow to install it's official linux drivers(.run) or is it enough to use default drivers on ubuntu.
I've installed Linux quite a few times on many different computers and for some reason, I'm stumped.
I went to ubuntu.com and burned myself a boot-disk. Afterwards I went to my dad's original ME box and when I tried deleting the partition I got an error that said, "Could not change partitions, cause the disk could not be locked".
What is the recommended method these days for command line partitioning and formatting for the Terabyte size hard disk.?
It was easy to keep up when your working or have access to hardware for re-purposing, but that has all dried up and my knowledge has been left behind. The problem(s) are with new, recent hardware
Following a crash from a now detectable faulty stick of RAMM, I've lost one of my data hard disks and my fiddling with replacement seems to leave various errors/warnings mainly about GPT not supported and this message is still present despite trying fdisk, cfdisk, gpart, gparted, and(?).
System is an ASUS mobo using SATA drives (root 500Gb: MBR+3 partitions;/, swap, /home), and two 2.4TB with single partitions.
actually some my windows ntfs partiitions are unable to mount at start up. the error msg is -'some of your partitions are unable to mount press 's' to skip or 'm' to manually mount.
