SUSE / Novell :: Hangs And KDE Is Not Loaded Giving Reason That Disk Is Out Of Space
Feb 26, 2009I am having dual boot system Opensuse 11.1 and Windows vista. I have allotted about 5 GB space to home partition. Now sometimes I copy/move files from Windows partitions to /home, this is easily done. But when I restart the computer, It hangs and KDE is not loaded giving reason that disk is out of space. I have to work on commandline and delete some files from /home to free some space,only then I can restart the computer normally. This is very annoying.When I copy/move files then Opensuse should immediately give me a warning.It seems nonsense to not start kde.

Jul 13, 2010Using a small hard drive (180 GB) dual booting windows XP for gaming and Ubuntu 9.10 for my other stuff during install I didnt know how much of each partition i would use, so i did 50-50 1 for ext3 and one for NTFSHowever after awhile it seems I have run out of space on my NTFS and have tons of unused space on my ext3.What I am wanting to do is shrink some of that ext3 down and give it it NTFS, I did a little searching and found a couple of old posts but I was a little sketchey on em. Simply looking for some personal Methods or Tools you have used and a starting point of how to use them.

Mar 17, 2011a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?
Slackware :: Disk Space Lost- Root Partition Has Very Little Space Left
Jan 31, 2010Today I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.

As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?
If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(

Jan 4, 2010I recently installed Bio-Linux 5.0 as a dual boot system with XP for some bioinformatics applications, but Im having some problems with the amount of disk space which can be allocated specifically for the Ubuntu install.
I partitioned a 250 GB portable hard drive into:
/dev/sdb1: 154.76 GiB (with 30 GiB allocated for Ubuntu)
/dev/sdb2 : 78.13 GiB
Ive been using blastclust to analyse some very large data sets, which keeps on crashing due to filesystem running out of disk space.
When I installed Bio-Linux 5.0 from the live cd, the maximum size I could allocate to the install was 30 GiB, and I havent been able to find a way to change this.
Ive tried using System->Administration->Partition Editor using the live cd, and can view / delete the partitions, but I cant find a way to specifically alter the disk space allocation for Ubuntu.
How do I increase the filesystem size to larger than the current 30 GiB?

My cache directory has been set up as per following statements.cache_dir ufs /Cache1/squid 10000 16 256cache_dir ufs /Cache2/squid 10000 16 256Now the problem is that size of /Cache1 and /Cache2 has reached to about 8GB and in near future it will reach the maximum limit of 10GB. I have partitioner available to me but how do I change the partition size when the root partition is mounted. Do I login as root and then umount or modify fstab and restart and change from command line or do I format and reinstall everything? I have room to expand but not sure how to manage this?

Is there a way that I can limit the amount of space a specific folder can take up? Alternately, is it possible to create a disk image that will only take up the amount of space in the image, but can automatically expand to a certain size? It would work similar to the Mac SpaseBundle format.

Aug 14, 2010My laptop has a 60GB hard drive, which my ex-husband set up with a 20GB partition for Windows XP and a 40GB partition with Suse 11, which suited me fine at the time. However, I'm now finding that I need to install a whole bunch of extra Windows programs relating to my work, and the 20GB partition is no longer sufficient, while I'm hardly using any space at all under Linux.
how I might go about redistributing the space between the two partitions (any other solutions to my lack of space problem also welcome)? Please bear in mind that I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this kind of thing!

Ubuntu :: Warning: Low Disk Space On OS Partition
May 21, 2010I'm trying to free up some space on the 4GB partition of my netbook since I've been receiving these warnings that I have NNN_MB left as free space. So what I did was to remove programs (via Ubuntu Software Center) that I thought wasn't that a priority for me.
But, there seems to be no change! Am I doing something wrong? The warnings keep coming.
Now that I'm thinking of upgrading to Lucid Lynx, I'm not too sure if I can.

I guess that's because I can't unmount it. And... I guess my Ubuntu won't work if I unmount it? xD
So... I heard that I could use a Gparted live CD to do this.
The only problem is that I can't boot from a cd/dvd drive.
So, is there a option to change the partition size while running Ubuntu?
Or is there a option to somehow unlock all BIOS settings?
When I try to acess the BIOS settings it ask for a password, and I just press enter... And I come to a menu where I can't change anything. Is this because of wrong password? Or is the password right but everything is blocked?
I mean, I can't change boot priotiy to cd/dvd just HDD and LAN.

Apr 21, 2010well I went to wubi-installer, and installed Ubuntu, and I love it, I don't want to go back to windows 7, but anyways, I set Ubuntu to my D: Drive, (200GB Space) and I installed Steam (Steampowered.com) to get my games on Ubuntu. I installed all of my games, but here is a big problem, I can't figure out how to use more than 30GB on Ubuntu, it just doesn't work. I got GParted, and the D: drive is set to 195 GB (200, but Ubuntu used 5GB)

When I look for specific info about what is taking the space using du command I get that the space used by the root system is 7.2Gb. I get to the same conclusion when checking the space with Nautilus.

Apr 23, 2010how much disk space a non manual dual boot uses? I've always been guided by a person knowing much about linux when doing my dual boot (and been guided to do the partitions manualy), but this person is not there for the moment and I need to do a dual boot on my son's computer. Since he'll need his Windows computer mainly for games I wouldn't want Ubuntu to take 2/3 of his disk space (which is about 250 Gb I think, let's say 50 Gb would be perfect for the Ubuntu)
And I'm not sure how I could change this later, cause in my own computer I cannot find how to resize (I cannot unmount neither resize the partitions I have) I don't mean I need to do this on my computer but I mean I wouldn't want to try out anything if I'm not sure it be could restored in 1,2,3. And partitions is such a thing. If I remember correctly I've done dual boot by default (i mean without doing the partitions manualy) and it does about 50/50 ?
