Ubuntu Installation :: Move Sources From Virtual PC To Real PC?
Mar 28, 2010
I am running Ubuntu Studio 9.10 on Microsoft Virtual PC. After using it a lot, I have decided to move to a real machine. The thing is, I don't have the time to reinstall ubuntu and all the programs and move my docs.So i wanted to copy/move the content of my virtual HDD to put it on a real one. But when I try copying th e OS, it says that i don't have permission to do that. What can I do?

I would like to install Ubuntu (latest stable) on a VirtualBox machine, set it up, install several apps, and then deploy it on a real PC. I think the main issue is the new hardware (which sould be different from the 'virtual' one). What should I do at that time? Is Ubuntu able to detect and install the new hardware?

I've got a windows partition with a lot of free space followed by an extended partition. The extended partition has three sub-partitions: grub/boot&everything else, home, swap.
I'd like to take some of the free space out of the NTFS partition and move it down into the extended partition for Ubuntu to use.
I've successfully shrunken the NTFS partition. Now I've got 5gb of unallocated space between the end of NTFS an start of the extended partitions.
Now I want to extend the boot/everything else sub-partition within the extended sub-partition.
Using the gParted live CD I'm:Resizing the extended partition (growing it forward by 5gb)
Resizing the boot/everything sub-partition forward by 5b
When I try to apply the changes I get an error: Unable to satisfy all constraints on the partition.
Is it possible to move this space into my extended partitions so Ubuntu has more space?

know of a way in Linux to have a virtual ethernet (e.g., eth0:1) appear as a "real" ethernet (eth1)? I ask because I have an old Shuttle box that only has one mobo ethernet and no way to add more. I'd like to use it in my Oracle RAC lab, but RAC requires two physical ethernets. You can't fool it with eth0 and eth0:1. RAC won't setup correctly if there's only one eth adapter, so I'm wondering if there is a way to fake two ethernets. I do not care about performance or reliability - it's my home lab. I fully realize that this violates every principle of HA, but I'm just using it to study. Worst case, I can get a USB dongle ethernet adapter, but I'd prefer to avoid the cost if possible.

I've got the following problem: I just noticed that there were just very few notifications about updating the system (usually there are damn many of them in a week) So I opened the update manager and clicked on "refresh list". The following result popped up: p,li{white-space:pre-wrap;}E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found First I thought, it would be just some kind of server problem, but it didn't stop. The next thing was to research the thread and I even found something. However, the solution suggested didn't work at all. (Things, which might have caused this: I installed the default software center |I'm using Kubuntu, but in this case that fact doesn't matter| and used it. To sum up:
- not able to update the system referring to the launchpad main sources for 11.04
- following error: E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found It would be great if this was a common issue and I've been simply too stupid to find a proper solution. So you could just post the link.

I am running Jolicloud on my netbook (which I believe is an Ubuntu derivative) and I am tried to enter the getdeb.net sources in so I can install apps from the website through APT but
1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.
2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.
My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?

After upgrading my Debian from Lenny to Squeeze a few things don't work properly. Most disturbing is that after one switch from graphic screen (x, Gnome) to the virtual consoles this can be observed:
1) The virtual consoles show only a small font. It doesn't change when I use 'dpkg-reconfigure console-setup'. Otherwise everything seems to function properly, but then
2) I return to x (with Alt+F7), and if I again want to reach the virtual consoles (with Alt+String+F3, this is a laptop) the screens are persistently black; nothing works, except Alt+F7, which allows me to go back to the x-screen. In this graphic screen it is possible to use the consoles without problem.
3) I have some trouble shutting-down the computer. The screen disappears, everything goes black, but the computer goes on and does not shut down until I press the power-button, forcing the shut-down process. If I press the keys which would bring the computer to a halt through the virtual consoles, I can bring it to stop allthough the screen remains black throughout the whole process. I press: Alt+Strg+F3 to reach the consoles, there 'root + password', Enter, halt, Enter. Nothing at all appears on the screen, but after a while the computer stops.

I just joined LinuxQuestions and find no Forum specific to command-line syntax questions, so I'll post it here. Here is the question. I can use:
cp -vr --parents /a/b/c/this /x/y
to create a directory /x/y/a/b/c/this containing this and everything under this.
But how could I create a directory x/y/b/c/this (ie omitting a)? I could MOVE to /a/ and then use
cp -vr --parents b/c/this /x/y
but I really don't want to do the MOVE (and can think of circumstances where I might not be able to).
I'm really looking for something exactly similar to the
tar -C DIRECTORY
switch that allows one to make a virtual move to the directory DIRECTORY before commencing the tar operation.

I would like to know if using VHD (Virtual Hard Drive) is a better method instead of resizing Hard Disks / partitioning etc....What I was thinking of is a method whereby I creeate a VHD file and link it to Windows 7 Boot Loader .. I am actually not in favour of either Virtual Box or VmWare as I have to load into an OS and launch it and I dont personally like the "host" --"guest" way of functioning wherein you have to keep toggling ...Also you dont get a real feel of a virtualized Application or Distro....
It is safe , but you cant test the real potential of a distro in terms of Hardware recognition ..It is a shadow of some existing OS whiin which resources are shared.. For instance my wireless adapter is used as a "wired" connection in Virtual Box.i dont know if the distro per se recognises my wireless. Also RAM is shared so speed is reduced.. So I read that in Win 7 you can create a VHD and also use BCD edit to invoke it at bootup...I am thinking it is in the same manner as a Virtual Box /Vmware way of functioning but with advantages like
1. Quicker bootup
2. Ease of Use ( no need for partition hassle)..Just create / delete HD files
3. Full Hardware resource utilization
4. Independent functioning
5. Dynamic storage
1. 2 TB limitation for files...But that is way too much for me!! I hardly use even 40 GB! Is this advisable or is there a basic flaw in my assumption?....I can have one permanent OS - either Linux or Win 7 and operate my system without bothering about file systems , resize etc

So I am still getting use to Ubuntu as far as when the new OS comes out. I am use to when Windows did a release every 3-5 years. So last year I install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and already 10.10 is out. My understanding though 10.10 is not a LTS so should I upgrade? Or will mine automatically upgrade to that version? Is there any real new features to 10.10 that I am missing out on? I can't do anything for another month and a half for the fact I am on deployment in the US Navy but I am highly thinking about moving up.

I was wondering if there's a way for me to get real-time kernel support on regular Ubuntu 9.10 through some sort of update. I know Ubuntu Studio has a real-time kernel, but I'd prefer not to use it. I'm a fan of the original Ubuntu.

I've been using Ubuntu NR 10.04 LTS for almost 1 years now with dual-boot with Windows XP by Wubi and I had great time using it. Now I want to experience the full potential of Ubuntu by creating another partition just for Ubuntu alone since I heard Wubi makes a lot of trouble and works slower than independent Ubuntu install.
Here's my question. Should I really create another partition to get full potential of Ubuntu or should I stick with wubi? I haven't got any problem running Ubuntu with Wubi but my video playback sometimes gone haywire which didn't happen in windows especially .mkv files
If I should create a partition, how do I want to shrink Drive C: to get enough free space for another partition? Mine was Windows XP so it doesn't have shrink option in Disk Managament unlike Vista/7.
And last question... Can Ubuntu run Window games or MMORPG smoothly like Counter Strike and WarcraftIII? I did try to play it before but it run too slower in Ubuntu. I used Netbook Eee PC 900HA, 2GB RAM, dual-boot Windows XP Home Edition with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 Lucid Lnyx LTS.

I created filesystem XFS on partition hda8 with subvolume real-time on partition hda5: Code: mkfs.xfs -r rtdev=/dev/hda5 /dev/hda8 and i mounted it: Code: mount -t xfs -o rtdev=/dev/hda5 /dev/hda8 /xfs But I don't know how can I use this partition hda5 with subvolume real-time. I don't know how to create directories, copy files to it and another. Thanks for all answers!
EDIT:in manual it is writen: The realtime section is used to store the data of realtime files. These files had an attribute bit set through xfsctl(3) after file creation, before any data was written to the file.

I'm a very new Linux user, so speak slowly and don't use big words. I installed Karmic from the Live CD. It is the only OS in use on this system. I then upgraded to Ubuntu Studio using the instructions found on the wiki.
On bootup, I get a brief message stating "GRUB loading" and then the system automatically boots to the generic kernel. No GRUB menu is ever displayed. I would like the option to boot to the real-time kernel, but I have no idea how to edit the appropriate files. I've done a fair amount of reading on the subject, but I find very little information relating directly to the real-time kernel, and so I still feel like I'm too green to do it without messing something up.

I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.
I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).
There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.
I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.
Is there anyone who can suggest if :
1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?
2. Any other way I can do this ??

anyway, as soon as that problem had been fixed (can access the internet now fine through firefox) another had arisen. i found that i couldnt download anything through the ubuntu software center, update the system through update manager, or even download anything through terminal.
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install amarok

I worked everyday during 1.5 years on a Wubi installation of Ubuntu 8.10.
Before quitting my job I have made a simple copy of the root.disk file, thinking I could restore it easily later.
Now I would restore this system on a Virtual Machine (with Virtual Box)
Have you got an idea how i could do this??
(I already tryied to install another wubi on a virtualized Windows 7, the install complete but I can't see ubuntu in the boot loader...)
