Ubuntu Installation :: Move From Fedora 12 To 10.04?
Aug 8, 2010I have Fedora 12 on a laptop and I want to move to Ubuntu 10.04 without losing anything. How do I do this? I find that Ubuntu is easier to use day in and day out on my other laptop than Fedora 12 is. There seems to be more support and help on Ubuntu as well. Thanks you for the help. I know I can backup files I want to keep to an external drive and then restore them in Ubunto, but is there anything else I need to know? Will Ubuntu see the Fedora 12 install and import items like it does from Windows?

Jan 2, 2010I am an actual openSUSE 11.2 user and i would like to switch to Fedora (probably 12).Now i have couple of questions i need someone answer for me please (they are quite crucial):
1. The possibility to unlock the luks crypt encrypted partition with a file, actually i have two important partitions with data on it (/home and stuff) which i unlock with a file on a pendrive, the /etc/fstab contains the by-id entry for the partition on the pendrive to unlock the /home and stuff partitions while /etc/crypttab has it like that:
cr_sdd1 something_blabla /media/disk/key luks
And it works. Now how would it look like in Fedora? I remember last time i tried it it works a bit different.
2. What about additional repositories (like KDE Beta or Factory, something like Packman in SUSE), how it looks like to subscribe to them. (rpmfusion is the right way for codecs etc. right?)
3. nVidia drivers, i have the 8800GT graphics card and i always installed it "the hard way" (which is in fact easy) but i remember there might be some problems with that in Fedora? How does it look like to install the drivers from the cli?
4. Installing applications, now that is a tough one, last time i wanted to install kate (word editor) i had to install whole group of applications since i couldn't install it "separately" is it true or did i do something wrong? And why PackageKit sucks big time? I remember trying to find a package kate in Fedora but it didn't succeed and had to install kde-sdk or something.
5. I love that i can have SElinux in Fedora what makes me a lot happier (i'm a bit paranoid and i like to keep my box secure even though it's linux ) How mature is that for desktop use?
6. Nouveau state, how does it work, does it stay on all the time or is it that if there are the closed drivers it switches to them after the initial booting?
7. Is there any graphical application to manage the applications in Fedora (except PackageKit because it sucks big time). I really like yum which is very friendly but is there any graphical front-end to this maybe?
Fedora Installation :: Preupgrade To Move From Fedora 14 To 15
Aug 22, 2011I did preupgrade to move from Fedora 14 to 15. Everything went fine until the end when I got the error message: Insufficient disk space, 0 M on boot.
I guess I would have expected the "preupgrade" software to have checked this before doing the install. But anyway, is there a way to get past this? If not, is there a way to get back to 14 without wiping the disk (obviously not my intent since I went the upgrade route).

Mar 7, 2011I'm using an EEEpc 1000HE with Easy Peasy (Intrepid) that a friend installed for me (no Windows). Since as far as I understand the Intrepid servers are down, I want to update to UNR. I have never installed Linux before and don't really know anyone who can actually show me how. This is the computer I use for my studies and it is extremely important that my files will stay on through the upgrade (I have a separate partition where my important files are saved).

Dec 12, 2010I've seen a lot of questions on the forum about static IP's and how often people have problems configuring them. Here is how it works:
If you have a router in your network, the router is the boss. You can configure anything you want in your computer's network manager, but in the end, the router will win. Say you have 3 computers and configure each one for a static IP. If the router is still set to assign IP's dynamically, it may want to ignore that unless you boot the computers in order of IP#. In other words if you set your IP's to .001. .002, and .003 you have to boot the one with .001 first to be sure it gets that IP.
If you boot .002 first the router wants to assign it the first IP in the list; .001. If the computer will only accept .002 the router may (or may not depending on the router) eventually assign it .002, or you end up with a power struggle between the computer and the router, and have no connection to that computer.
That said sometimes setting IP's on each computer works, at least most of the time, again depending on the router. Some routers will assign the same IP to the same computer when each has individual settings, but even then you still have to deal with settings on each computer; a lot of work. And at some point you will probably still have a glitch or problem, at least temporarily. In my experience setting static IP's on the computers is hit or miss in the long run.
If you set the static IP's in the router and make sure the router recognizes each computer by it's MAC address it's a done deal. You can boot the computers in any order, they will always be assigned the same IP, and you don't have to do anything on any of your your computers or in your network managers to make it happen. Bada bing, bada boom, done. Less work, more stable network, fewer headaches.

Mar 13, 2011Is there any easy way to do offline package upgrades in Ubuntu? I was using debian's repository for the longest time to get individual packages, then found launchpad. Is there a script or something that will tell you what the dependencies are then let you copy them to a thumbdrive or something?
I know online upgrades are great but there are some cases where online isn't an option. Here's an example. Getting wine. There used to be this repository of .debs from the wine website, but now I can't find it. Launchpad has it, but it's all individual files.
Fedora Installation :: Setup Dual Bood Data Partition And Move /home?
Feb 21, 2009I have just spent dome time using gparted to sort out my partitions. I have a vista partition, a fedora one and a big chunk of unallocated space I wish to use as my data drive.
I want to move my ~ folder to the new partition and have windows/vista access the folder and write to the Documents, Downloads folders etc.
What is the best format to use?
Also I plan to start backing up my partitions to a server, for instance using g4l to save a linux image (maby a windose one too). Is there any benifit in keeping all the hidden files (ones starting with period '.') i.e moving the whole ~ folder or would I be best off leaving the ~ dir and moving the folders I know i use such as ~/Downloads, ~/Documents etc?
And how should i preform the move of all these files? 'mv'? do i need to add any special options?

I've got some software that is 32-bit but can't use them because I lack those library files etc. needed to run them. The programs I'm trying to get to work are : LightZone 3.7 and Bibblepro both photo software.I'd hate to go back to Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit (it worked and all that was need were ia32libs I believe.)

Fedora :: Compile A Vanilla Kernel On The Easy/lazy Way?
Apr 29, 2010I thought I would give some instructions on how I compile my kernels. My long-time windows user parts trader recently asked me how to compile a kernel on Fedora. He was confused with all the tutorials requiring you to build an RPM, so I showed him how I do it, the standard/easy/lazy way. Before I start, here are a couple things I assume. I assume you are a Fedora user and that you are NOT in text mode, but in GNOME. I also assume you realize that this can take up to SIX HOURS on an old Pentium 3 1.3Ghz. Remember that some proprietary drivers as well as some free ones are not included in the kernel, so make sure you don't delete your existing one.
First get the dependencies you need.
su -c "yum -y install gcc ncurses-devel"
Next get the kernel source. I use 2.6.33.3 as an example. To download it, click here.Extract it by right-clicking on the file and then choosing extract here. This will take about five minutes. Now open a terminal, become root, and cd to the directory linux-2.6.33.3. It is important to cd here and not to the kernel directory inside of there, even though make has an extra variable that specifies there.
Now we need to configure the kernel before we build it with make O=kernel menuconfig. It will take a couple minutes to set up, then you will be presented with a cheap psuedo-gui in your terminal. Just select exit and yes to save your config. You usually don't need to change anything here.
Ready to compile and install? Remember this can take up to six hours, and your machine may become VERY slow. It is not recommended that you attempt to use your machine with this in progress. OK then. As root, in the same directory, type:
make O=kernel && make O=kernel modules_install install. This will compile the kernel and install the kernel and it's modules. Done? Now change the kernel and initrd in your bootloader to match the new kernel. If you ever want to reuse the same source code folder, use make mrproper to clean things up and build it again.

I know I could just run the install disc; but I'd like to take what changes I've made to Ubuntu along with it - for instance, TrueCrypt, Simple Backup, AdobeReader 3 (I think that's an addition), K3b, MuseScore, and some other applications I've added along the way. Also, I went thru some Terminal commands to get Brasero to copy CD's recently and would like to avoid doing that again.

Some specifics: The installation functions as my lanServer, and has been modified with thirdparty-repositories and probably also directly downloaded debs, also some packages have been compiled from cvs.
Some of the services it provides are: dns, dhcp, ssh, ftp, http(ssl), blog, caldav, mldonkey, vnc, vpn (and appleshare in disorder). Probably some I forgot.
The old and the new hardware are quite similar, moving from Dell Latitude D600 to D610, so I wonder if it would be possible to simply boot the new hardware from the old installation?
Is there a way to reinvoke hardware-recognition?

I have a simpler question.
Currently I have a Dell GX280 with an ATi graphics card which I am using as a media centre. I will soon be moving the hard drive this to an NVIDIA Ion Atom based system. Can I just move the hard drive? Should I uninstall the ATi graphics first?
Anything else I should do?

After reading some online literature on the subject recently, I suspect that the GRUB may be on the internal hard disk MBR instead of the MBR for my USB drive. How can I move the GRUB to another MBR without completely reinstalling it?

Oct 25, 2010I have Ubuntu installed on my 1st HD partition and working pretty much the way I like. I need to convert this to a dual-boot system with Windows. Windows really wants to be on the first partition on the first drive, so I think I need to move Ubuntu to the 3rd partition, behind the swap partition.I could do a complete reinstall but that would take forever. Is it reasonable to just copy the present /dev/sd0a partition to /dev/sd0c, install Windows, then run the Ubuntu CD to reinstall GRUB?
I guess I could just use dd for this but it's been so long that I've forgotten the correct method for moving a whole filesystem.
