Hardware :: MSI Bluetooth USB Dongle Connection - Certainly Not Long Enough To Send Or Receive A Single File

May 10, 2011

Problems with Bluetooth. The dongle appears to be working, but then it craps out on me after only a few minutes!

I'm using the blueman-manager GUI to connect to my cell phone. If I load blueman-manager almost immediately after connecting my dongle, I can use it for a few minutes, but only long enough to add my phone, pair it and mark it as trusted. Certainly not long enough to send or receive a single file, though. Eventually and inevitably, the connection breaks, blueman-manager hangs/freezes up, and I start getting errors in dmesg.

Here's all the relevant diagnostic stuff...

Code:

Code:

Code:

I added the MARK myself to separate where the dmesg output stops immediately after plugging in the dongle from what appears after the connection is broken. It's right when that timeout error happens that the connection severs itself, and the error usually repeats itself several times.

Even if I just connect the dongle and not do anything except wait a few minutes, after a few minutes that timeout error will still happen. I'm running fluxbox and I don't believe I have any automounting programs, so there wouldn't be any interference from something like that.

Ubuntu Networking :: Firewall - Block Incoming / Outgoing Connections To IP Range

Jul 4, 2010

I am still new to ubuntu and I use firestarter as my firewall tool and I was told that its just ufw in a gui. Well anyways I noticed a connection to 174.129.241.144 using https and python, I didn't have any scripts running and my browser was closed, I read the man files for ufw and it said to do something like deny from 174.129.0.0/12 and I want to block all incoming and outgoing connections to this IP range and I was wondering how to do that, I heard of iptables that it would be able to do this but I dont know anything about it. What I should learn so I can handle these kinds of situation in the future and how I can block this ip subnet or also what does the /8, /12, and /16 stand for?

Software :: Gnuplot - Combining A Linear Range And Log-scale Range In The Same X-axis?

Apr 24, 2011

I want to plot a set of data in only one plot. The problem is that some points of the data should be better plotted in a linear scale (lets say 0 to 100,000) but there are other data points that, exceding the value 100,000, would be better plotted in a logarithmic scale, as they goes in the range 100,000 to 500,000,000. Let's say the data is:

Code:

X Y
0 100
10000 80
20000 75

[code]....

Is there a way to plot all these points in the same plot in only one X-axis showing two different ranges in that axis: linear: 0-100,000 logarithmic: 100,000 - 1,000,000,000?The axis would be read, for example, as:

Code:
|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
0 20k 40k 60k 80k 100k 1M 10M 100M 1G

(The abbreviations k-M-G are not the important point. Just shown for clarity)

Programming :: Bash Script To Ping A Range Or Own IP-range?

Apr 11, 2011

I want to build a bash script, which can ping a range IP adresses which will be filled in by the admin. If there is no IP-adress filled in, then the script must ping the subnet where the system is logged on. So if my ip is 192.168.1.6, then the script must ping from 192.168.1.1 till 192.168.1.255 Or else, if there is given a beginning and ending ip it must ping that!

The first part of the bash script is to ping a given range (see below). But there is one problem, how can I tell the script to ping from $begin till $end, [..] is of course wrong! But what must be filled in there???

echo "Enter beginning IP-adres:"
read begin
echo "Enter ending IP-adres:"
read end
ping -c 1 $begin [..] $end

The second part is to find my own ip and ping the whole range.. How to do that? I only can find my own IP, but I cant ping the whole range,, how to do that?

#!/bin/bash
ifconfig | grep 'inet addr:' | grep -v '127.0.0.1' |
cut -d: -f2 | awk '{ print $1 }'

Debian Installation :: Partitioning Fails On Sun Ultra 450?

Apr 3, 2011

So, I've got as far as partitioning the hard disks on my Sun Ultra 450 Enterprise system, but it always fails with:

SILO (Sparc Linux Loader) can only boot the kernel off of a disk with the "sun" partition table. In the current partitioning scheme the kernel is going to be installed on the /boot partition located on a disk with the partition table of type "msdos".

What is this error message trying to say in its ambiguous way?

I selected automatic partitioning, but it got me to the same place as manual partitioning before it failed in the same way.

I installed four used hard drives in this system - they may have come from PCs for all I know. However, they are SCSI SCA drives, which makes it hard for me to believe they came from a PC environment.

If they did, do I need to to a low-level (or high-level) format of these drives to wipe out the "msdos"ness of them? If so, how do I do that in the SILO installer?

Debian :: Force Single User Mode On Sun Ultra 5

Apr 26, 2010

I have successfully installed Debian on a Sparc Ultra5, 270MHz SparcIIi CPU, 384MB RAM, 40GB HD. However, once Debian tries to load Gnome (right before the login screen) the screen goes blank, and so the machine becomes unusable. I booted of the NetInstall CD, into rescue mode, and executed a shell, but apparently there is currently a problem when running nano from a live CD, so I can not edit the xorg.conf file when I boot the live CD. So, I would like to just boot the install into single user mode, but I dont know how. Currently, when the Ultra5 is powered on, it tries to boot with command "boot", so I hit "Stop A". From there I type "boot Disk1" to boot Debian normally. To boot from a CD, I would type "boot cdrom" So any idea on how I can boot from Disk1 in Single User Mode?

My only other idea is to hook up another monitor I have which may be able to deal with whatever resolution Gnome is defaulting to. However, Id rather just boot into single user mode.

Fedora :: QuickCam Ultra Vision" Webcam With A Microphone?

Oct 19, 2009

I own a "Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Ultra Vision" web cam with a microphone. I have successfully installed it, I can get fedora to recognize it and even view video through all the web cam applications I've tried including vlc, cheese, and camstreem. It was automatically detected by Fedora and took no "tweaking" of my own. The problem I'm having is I don't know how to access the audio. When I go to the pulse audio applet or volume contol (mixer) I can see my quick cam as in input, and I can even watch the audio meter move and respond to sounds I am making. But I don't know how to tell any applications where to get sound from... my video source is /dev/video0, what is my audio source? Since my audio level meter moves when i say things or make sounds, I assume it is there and ready, I just don't know how to access it. I figure this should be pretty simple. I'd like to be able to record video/audio, or even just use the mic separately.

Ubuntu :: Ultra Low Video Mode / Roll Back Changes I Made?

Sep 15, 2010

In an attempt to install specific video drivers for the Intel 845 chipset, I followed the instructions here: http://www.downloadatoz.com/driver/a...ntu-10-04.html

Now, the system will only boot in recovery mode, and then at 640x480 resolution. When booting, it gives the option to return to default or manually configure, but if I try to select either option and click OK, nothing happens. Once in the GUI, it shows no proprietary hardware drivers installed. Is there a way to roll back the changes I made, or return to more default settings without reinstalling the OS?

Hardware :: Slowdown With Nvidia's Legacy Driver 173.14.27. Geforce FX 5900 Ultra

Oct 9, 2010

I'm running a Geforce FX 5900 Ultra with nvidias 173.14.27 driver. I'm running slackware 13.1 with kernel 2.6.35.5.

I get a horrible slowdown which is noticeable in emulators such as bsnes and kega fusion. I also think it's responsible for other issues that involve zsnes flickering like mad and hanging. Zsnes will actually crash if I select any filter plugins with opengl output modes.

Kega Fusion slows down to a crawl (we're talking 10 fps) immediately before loading a rom. Playing a rom makes it even slower.

Bsnes has the same kinda slowdown as kega fusion (even worse since it's so cpu intensive) when I activate scanlines or any type of output filter with opengl. Otherwise with no filters and just plain opengl it seems to run fast like it should...

Gens-GS doesn't seem to enable any filters in fullscreen mode... They work however in windowed mode with no slowdown issues...

I've compiled and installed SDL 1.3 from hg repository, then recompiled bsnes just to test it with newer SDL. Unfortunately the problem persists even with a newer SDL version which thankfully for me means I can revert to the older stock SDL without having to recompile everything else haha!

It's funny because I thought these issues were related to the emulators and not the video card drivers. I had these issues for a couple years running ubuntu and trying other distros. When I installed Slackware 13.1 I decided to try my Radeon 9700 pro and kega fusion no longer had this slowdown issue! I switched back to my Geforce and installed nvidia's drivers and immediately had slowdown issues... I'm gonna switch back to the radeon card and test the other emulators but otherwise it'd be nice to know if there's a solution to this issue...

Ok I installed my radeon card: nvidia-installer --uninstall, then updated xf86-video-ati from 6.13.0 to 6.13.2. Even though kega fusion runs fine I get even worse problems with everything else! LOL so I'm going back to my geforce card.

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute

Oct 13, 2009

I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.

I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.

A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.

I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.

Hardware :: USB Mouse And USB DAC Can't Be Used Simultaneously?

Mar 26, 2010

I have a USB mouse and a USB audio DAC. Both work fine separately with linux. The problem is when I try using both simultaneously. The first-plugged device will work fine, but not the second-plugged device. That is, if I plug the mouse first and the DAC second, then the mouse works and the DAC doesn't work. And conversely.

When I say that the second-plugged device doesn't work, here's what I mean: the USB device is detected by the system, but gets "reset" every 2 seconds and can't be actually used at all. Here are some log messages. Here I'm working in the case where I have plugged the mouse first and am plugging the DAC second.

Code:
$ lsusb | egrep -i mouse|texas
Bus 002 Device 009: ID 08bb:2704 Texas Instruments Japan
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 046d:c526 Logitech, Inc. MX Revolution Cordless Mouse
"Texas Instruments" is my DAC. So, at the level of lsusb, all is well.
