Hardware :: Nvidia Card Is Simple To Install?

I have been looking in ebay and it looks like I can buy any Nvideo Card I want. So Im looking for something that is inexpensive But it has to be easily installed as far as the drivers are concerned . Ideally just install it and it can be recognised and drivers installed and set up. It probably is asking for to much but Im new to linux and Ive read a few descriptions of installing drivers and I dont have a clue. My old Via/s3g is freezing the screen. I need very little when it comes to a video card, I dont do games, I watch some you tube . So simple and inexpensive is the word.

I can't figure out how to install the nvidia drivers for my nvidia 8800 GT video card. I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal
1.) I've installed the ubuntu 10.10 64bit for i386 in an oracle virtualBox..
2.) downloaded from nvidia.com "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.44.run"
3.) Stuck don't know what to do.

Only about 1.5 weeks into Linux guys so bear with me. I'm trying to uninstall the Nouveau driver and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.14-pkg1.run for my old Nvidia TNT2 card. Following these directions I run into a problem in the first step. When I execute the Ctrl+Alt+F1 command and get:
Ubuntu 10.10 splat-desktop tty1 splat-desktop login: if I enter splat which I believe is my username and the correct p/w I get an incorrect login response.

- Should I use a daily build iso or the Alpha1 iso for Squeeze?
- Which is the best way to install my 8600 nvidia card?
- Is it ok if I use the same password for root and user, since it's a single-user system?

I need to install the nvidia driver on a PC that don't have any nvidia card in it.It's on a PXE server with read-only client's / . Those clients have nvidia cards.When this server had a nvidia card in it, i simply chrooted in the exported / , then i could install this driver.

Installed Ubuntu 11.04 but i don't know how to install my nvidia 7200 gs graphics card. in the previous versions (ubuntu 9.10) it installed very easly.. But in Natty 11.04, while i am try to install my driver it fails 2 times and after installation (reboot) ubuntu freezes and not working So reinstalled ubuntu 11.04.

I'm trying to install the drivers for my nvidia graphics card. I downloaded the shell script from the nvidia website. However, there's something peculiar going on. When I execute the shell script it says it cannot find my kernel headers, yet I can verify that my /usr/include/linux/kernel.h does exist. I have selinux on, but just installed os with it on, so contexts are fresh. Checked them as well. After doing some research I found something out. When I run a 'uname -a' I get this.

Yet when I ran 'yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers' they installed the following versions.

I see that the error in the nvidia shell script can't locate the header files for the RUNNING kernel version which makes sense. Why would yum install that version instead of the one in 'uname -a'? Or am I misunderstanding something?

A few years back I gave linux a try. It was fun but eventually I dropped it because simple tasks like installing software were always a practice in goose hunting and copy/paste command marathons. I am trying again to get fedora up and going. Thinking many of the old methods would be cleaned up by now. I was trying to install nvidia drivers for my 8800 card.
I download the *.run file and it tells me I need to disable "X...etc" so I init 3 to the command prompt and run the *.run file there. Then the installer says.... "hey buddy.. you need gcc to make this work". ok.. I type init 5 to get back to the internet browser. So I search about google for a few moments and then find the yum command for getting gcc installed. Run the gcc and again... init 3 to get back to the command prompt and run the *.rn file for the nvidia drivers. This time the installer says... "hey man... you need the kernel source tree".

I did not find my graphics card in the HCL/Nvidia video cards thread. I looked in YaST for drivers & found none. My desktop pc freezes after the system loads so I cannot use my system. I understand about the level '3' boot option for tty input. How would I download/run the nvidia installer from tty?

I am try to install the nvidia 96.43.16 driver for a Gforce 2 MX-400 video card following this [URL].. When I ran the 'rpm -e --nodeps xorg-x11-Mesa-libGL' command the the package wasn't installed.
When I ran modprobe nvidia it wasn't found either.
Being a newbe I had no idea what to do next.

I'm very new to Linux and have recently installed Debian Squeeze on my pc. I'm trying to install the Nvidia package as the system has a XFX 9 series card installed. I'm unable to get stop X to complete package installation. I keep getting permission denied when I run the command /etc/init.d/gdm stop. After reviewing a few forums I also log in as root to the console and tried the command there as well. I'm still getting the permission denied response. Can anyone advise on how to get around this?

This is to request the communities assistance with the following: As the title suggests, I am attempting to install 10.04.2 LTS on a PC equipped with an ASUS M2NPV-VM mobo and integral NVidia GeForce 6150 chipset/card and AMD dual processors.
Result: While the CD with the installation software loads, the splash screen comes up distorted and is displayed as several black and white horizontal bars. I have tried this with low end monitors with a VGA input with the same results. It appears to me as if though the video driver on the installation CD is not suitable for the mobo's chipset, but I may be wrong.

I have managed to work out how to install my NVidia video card driver. I'm just about to tackle getting the
microphone aspect of my sound card in my laptop going. If that goes alright I'd like to install the Wacom drivers for my Cintiq 21ux.
I have sound coming out of my sound card, I just need to put some sound through it (for skype conferences)

I just got done installing Ubuntu on a new harddrive and set it up to dual boot with grub loader. However, when I boot into Ubuntu, the screen goes black. I can however login (blind) by hitting enter and typing password. The login sound goes and it logs in, however, the screen stays black. I am running a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 Video Card.

The freeze's on my machine only appears when i monitor the temperature of
the gpu. Normally i use gkrellm to monitor temperatures including the gpu temperature. When i stop gkrellm there a no more freeze's on my system. Then i started nvdock which also monitor the gpu temperature and the freeze's are back. Stopping nvdock make the system working normally. I have done a few reboots now, warm and also cold starts und everything works normal.
System data: AMD P2 X4 940, Nvidia GTS 250, openSUSE 11.3, Nvidiadriver 256.44,

I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. Right now I'm playing Eternal Lands on the Linux side. Looking to spend $100-$150 on a new card.I have a Core2Duo Wolfdale 3.0, with 2ghz ram and run Lucid 32bit. Also run windows Vista64Ultimate on dual boot (rarely).
I would love to buy a new ATI 5770 or 5830, ATI budget cards seem to be much better for the buck over budget Nvidia cards, but I'm concerned with ATI drivers and long term with Ubuntu.On the Nvidia side I'm considering the GTS 250. The only advantage I can find is lower power consumption with Nvidia and Ubuntu has always preferred Nvidia over ATI, as far as working drivers go.As Far as Ubuntu and Lucid is concerned, which way is best, ATI or Nvidia? Has anything changed with ATI support, that could make theor cards more compatible now and in the future?

I have spent ages looking at similar problems but not not quite the same. I have installed 11.4/Gnome (x86) and wanted to use my GT430 card. I went here: 'http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers' and used the 'one click' install for current cards. All went ok until I rebooted and I got a 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.846578 seconds' message. I got five of these in succession until the 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors' appeared and it popped me down to an init 3 login.
So, I deleted the blacklisting conf file so that I could get back in to Gnome on Nouveau (which I did ok). I then noticed there was no /etc/X11 Xorg.conf file so I ran /usr/lib/nvidia-xconfig to generate one (which it did) - but it made no difference. I am at a loss know after spending 8 hours on this. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. My machine is still at fresh install state so even if I have to reinstall 11.4 it does not matter.

Using the video card Nvidia 7800GT on an AMD4200, MB T6100, I am unable to install from the iso, as progression is halted by a video mode that is unviewable. (black and white rows). I can get to the "f6" menu, however once I attempt an install it fails. My main goal is to install Mythbuntu, however the problem seems to be with the Unbuntu install drivers.This post worked to get around this on version 6.10, however these instructions no longer work. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=379807
Is there any way to use the newest Nvidia drivers that should work from a new install CD? I do not see a command line option, which would seem to allow me to install and update and setup the distro, THEN add my drivers before I run xconf.

I like OpenGL.
I don't like X.
On Linux, is there anyway to get 3D acceleration from my Nvidia card without X? Ideally, I'd have the kernel boot, get to a console, then somehow get into a "graphics mode", where my entire monitor is just a single OpenGL screen ... and I draw stuff to it with OpenGL. Without X.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on an older Compaq Evo D310. When I do a search of my video card I get "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF", which is the integrated card on the motherboard, but I'm actually using an Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 400. At least that's the card my VGA monitor is connected to. How do I get Ubuntu to recognize the Nvidia card? I'd like to try installing an nvidia legacy driver for it to boost performance. Thanks.
