Hardware :: Mouse Froze - OS Completely Unresponsive - PC's HD Led Was Fully On Without Blinking

Mar 18, 2011

I wanted to have a partition with Debian, but after lots of unsolved errors I went to the more compatible Ubuntu. To my demise, he suffered from errors too. Without counting on the numerous errors and bugs experienced with other linuxes and windows. Given my computer's history of failing, I'd like to know what's wrong with him, and I'll take the opportunity to see if I can make Ubuntu work allright, so I'll describe his last error.

Actually more like a first error. Right after the instalation process (Ubuntu 10.10), I ran apt-get upgrade, and went to Firefox to waste time. Soon after, everything but the mouse froze, OS completely unresponsive. One strange thing was that the PC's HD led was fully on, without blinking.

Stranger is that this also happened at Windows XP, but at the time, he wasn't accessing the HD, and it didn't froze, just got excruciatingly slow. And it stayed like that on every boot. At least I was able to do some tasks and install SliTaz on my pendrive so I could use the computer. But suddenly it came back to normal.

As I'm talking about windows, I'll add that he bluescreens seldomly, always refering to some winsomething.dll .

The HD is almost brand new.
The RAM is not too old.
The oldest in my computer is the mobo and the processor.
It's not overheating because the power supply's fan is not working, so the computer always run with a home fan in it.

Debian :: Error When Starting - Completely Froze - Couldn't Do Anything On The Desktop

Sep 10, 2011

Yesterday, I was doing some work (Don't worry, I didn't lose anything), and I restored a terminal I had open, and it completely froze! I couldn't do anything on the desktop, so I tried rebooting. Doing that resulted in an error when booting. It would say "bin/sh : Can't mount" or something like that (Can't quite remember) not too long after trying to start up, and it would leave me stuck with some weird terminal. The only command I know on this new terminal is reboot. What should I do?

Note that I just installed Debian two nights ago and it was working perfectly fine until last night...

The error says "/bin/sh: Can't access tty; job control turned off"

Ubuntu Networking :: Installing Mobile Broadband - Froze Completely - Networkmanager Refused To See The Modem

Mar 8, 2010

I am trying to switch to mobile broadband, Ubuntu 9.10, Huawei E1750 modem, provider Telia Sweden. So far I tried this:

(previous: tried to get started with an Option Icon 550 modem, but could not do it. Ubuntu froze completely, networkmanager refused to see the modem after this. Read somewhere that it is (next to) impossible with Ubuntu, but Huawei is a better chance. Maybe I changed some settings on the way, went and got a Huawei)

-connected modem, nothing happened

-rebooted to Windows Vista, installed modem

-rebooted to Ubuntu networkmanager sees the modem, when I select it, it gives a message 'GSM network, disconnected'

Also: Ububtu sees the usb stick as a folder

Ubuntu :: Get Unresponsive Mouse Clicking/scrolling Ever?

Oct 18, 2010

I dont know why this is happening to me. Maybe it's because I have so many things running, but its mainly just browsers and stuff that hardly require cpu usage. Sometimes (and its getting worse now) when i try to highlight the text on a web page, it wont work, the mouse pointer will be the arrow instead of the "I" like symbol which signifies the possibility for text highlighting. Then after a little while it will become the "I" symbol so I can highlight the text. It will switch on and off like that and make it really hard for me to do things.

Also, sometimes I cannot scroll down, it wont work when i hold the side bar thing and scroll it down, but after a few seconds it may work. This happens on my browser as well as amarok so far. I hope someone has experienced something like this because its getting frustrating.

UPDATE: Happens on KMess too. I cant type in the convo box sometimes. So I have to minimize and maximize it in order for it to work. Also if I have a browser up in the background while a Kmess convo box is infront, I cant click to the browser when its right there, even though I can click on it in the taskbar, if you know what i mean.

Fedora Installation :: Nouveau And NVidia Drivers - Jet-black Screen And A Completely Inexpressive Blinking White Cursor

Nov 29, 2009

Although I managed fairly quickly to get 3D enabled on the GF 7600GS of my desktop, it took me longer to get 3D up on the GF 9650M GT of my Asus laptop M70Vn. Although I made extensive use of the numerous procedures outlined here, none of them worked and booting my laptop always ended up with me facing a jet-black screen and a completely inexpressive blinking white cursor. My solution was simple: I did not blacklist Nouveau and problems mysteriously disappeared.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Cursor Becoming Unresponsive At Random Intervals

Jun 21, 2010

Once every, say, 12 hours of use, I find that the mouse cursor spontaneously becomes unresponsive. The rest of the system is fine, and it responds to the keyboard, but the mouse does nothing. I'm pretty sure this isn't a problem with the mouse itself, because when it happens I've tried unplugging the mouse and plugging in a different one, and the problem persists. The problem doesn't seem to be correlated with any particular program or type of activity. I realize that this probably isn't much to go on. The next time it happens, is there at least anything I can do by way of diagnosis?

Ubuntu :: Keyboard / Mouse Unresponsive For 1st Minute Of Start Up - Cause Of It?

Jul 29, 2010

This just started happening recently on an older install of Linux Mint 9, 32 bit, Gnome with Compiz using a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse.

I noticed another problem about the same time and I don't know if it is related but now when I restart I get the "default keyring login" pop up message. The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive for at least 60-90 seconds after everything has opened. It only recently started to do this and is not a result of old/slower hardware.

I don't know where to start looking for a cause or what section to post this in.

Ubuntu :: Embedded Flash Objects Unresponsive To Mouse Input

Mar 5, 2010

I have installed Flash (via Synaptic Package manager, flashplugin-installer and flashplugin-nonfree) on Ubuntu 9.10, 64-bit. When I attempt to view / interact with embedded flash objects in HTML pages using FireFox 3.5.8 I find that they are unresponsive to my mouse clicks (though mouse-over seems to work). For example, if I would like to start an embedded flash movie, I cannot click the play button, nor can I control any of the other mouse-click controls. Also, on occasion, the entire flash object will not display at all but will instead just leave a big white space on the web page.

I do not have any flash-blocking ad-ons installed. When I first installed flash I experienced this problem but was able to temporarily fix it by downloading the 64-bit version of flash 10 from Adobe, [URL] and manually copy-pasting this file into FireFox's Plugins folder (which I had to create myself in the mozilla folder). Immediately after doing this flash objects work properly in FireFox, but upon restarting my computer I find that the almost always problem re-occurs and I have to remove and then re-copy the 64-bit plugin into the plugins folder again to get it to work. FireFox is my primary browser, but on occasion I will use Google Chrome and have not experienced this same problem with viewing flash objects.

Fedora :: Screen Goes Black - Mouse Frozen - Caps-lock Blinking

Dec 14, 2009

I keep starting up Fedora and I'm not able to get far (although it's not always at the same time) before my screen will go black, except it shows the mouse/cursor - but it's frozen, and thhen the caps-lock light starts blinking and I can't do anything or get it to recover. Sometimes it happens after 30 seconds, sometimes 40+ seconds and sometimes within 15 or so seconds.

How do I stop this and diagnose this?

I've tried, in the boot-startup to choose an older kernel version, butt the same thing occurs!

I have:
Fedora 11
Kernel: 2.6.29.6-217.2.16.fc11 i586
Asus EEE PC 1002HA

One other thing, it does always seem to happen after I've turned on wireless. And I've been using F11 for months now with no issue.

Ubuntu :: Significance Of Swap Partition - Cpu Light Keeps Blinking Continuously And The Mouse Movement Is Very Slow

Aug 2, 2010

I need to know the necessity of swap partition in Ubuntu.. I have recently bought a new HD and installed Ubuntu(with NO swap, only Ubuntu on a single partition) on it and am facing frequent, random hanging issues with it.. Earlier,my old HD used an swap partition along with main partition and i never faced hanging issues at that time..

Actually, when in hanging mode, the cpu light keeps blinking continuously and the mouse movement is very slow, the screen also becomes dim. After sometime,it comes out of hanging mode and mouse movement becomes normal.Sometimes, even after waiting for 15-20 minutes,it does not come out of hanging mode and the system has to be restarted.(this is what forced me to look for a possible solution to this)

Slackware :: Usb Mouse Connected To A Laptop Is Completely Non-responsive ?

Oct 19, 2010

I installed slackware 13.1 lately to a laptop. its a toshiba satellite m40 185 if it makes any difference. In any case, and while the touchpad works flawlessly, connecting a standard USB mouse to the pc does not power up the mouse (its a microsoft notebook optical mouse) and of course the mouse pointer does not follow the mouse's moves... no clicks either.

Basically when I do

Quote:

I don't see junk printed on my terminal, whereas moving around the touchpad I do see some.

Just to clarify, It's not just X that is not working, gpm doesn't get mouse moves from the usb mouse either (touchscreen works flawlessly in console too).

my xorg.conf looks like:

Quote:

I added the last 2 options after following this guide, which seems to cover concurrent read-in from more than 1 pointing devices.

All the other guides I found assume that you have a working gpm.

One question is: since with the new radeon drivers the xorg.conf file can be missing altogether and X will not cry, does it make any difference to add mouse options in xorg.conf?

Continuing my thought: it must be something else. Kernel doesn't seem to be the problem. The USB subsystem works since usb mass storage devices (that's all I have sitting around) are sensed by the kernel and udev properly. Additionally, the problem persists with the huge kernel.

Before slackware, I used to run fedora on the laptop and both pointing devices worked properly, however I think fedora uses another method of setting up the X server devices..

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04 Froze?

Apr 21, 2011

I started the upgrade last night, and around 12:03 it locked up the system and became unresponsive. I could move the mouse around the screen, but nothing was able to be interacted with, and the keyboard commands I could think of were not working. The upgrade manager said 10 minutes were left and it was in the process of updating the boinc-client (not a compiled version the one listed in the package manager). I left it until about 4:30 this morning and tried to reboot since I couldn't seem to accomplish anything else. The system came up stating it could mount root and just about everything else. So I burned a CD with 11.04 and booted off the CD and am now using the "Try Ubuntu" mode. I checked the file system and the folders I would expect to be there were.

Ubuntu :: All Panels Have Disappeared After Computer Froze

Nov 15, 2010

I'm currently running it as a dual-boot together with Windows 7. I hadn't had any problems up till yesterday, when all of a sudden Ubuntu stopped responding (I wasn't doing anything special, running firefox and mathematica) while opening a new tab (.....). I waited for a few minutes, still no response, and then hard booted it. When starting it up again, all my panels had disappeared.. The pictograms on my desktop are also moving up and down about a pixel continuously about once a second. I'm still able to run a terminal using shortcuts, and thus launch any program, but I have no idea how to recover the panels, and am still wondering how to prevent them from disappearing. I can make a screenshot on request, but there is really nothing to see except for a few pictograms. I am also using two monitors and 10.10 if that is of any importance.

Ubuntu :: No Suspend Or Hibernate - System Froze

Mar 31, 2011

Machine is a Dell Optiplex GX260, Pentium 4 with ATI Radeon RV200 QW [Radeon 7500]. I believe this is an AGP graphics card. I also believe that the graphics card is the root of my problem. In Karmic, I could get the computer to suspend. but it would not resume. The monitor would not initiate and it seemed as though the system froze. Only way out was a hard reboot. Hibernate worked for me without any problems, so it was no deal breaker. Now in Meerkat, Suspend behaves exactly as before. However, I can not get the system to go into hibernation.

The monitor goes down, but the system seems to freeze and never go down. I have tried editing the options in the acpi-support file to no avail. I have tried disabling compiz (which works amazingly well with this card), to no avail. I am using the open-source drivers and I have not tried the closed-source drivers in this system. I tried the closed-source drivers in Karmic and they made no difference. I may try un-installing the ATI card and fall back on the on-board Intel chipset to see if that solves the problem. Only then, I will loose 3d effects, etc.

Hardware :: RAM Errors - Kubuntu 10.10 Froze Randomly

Dec 18, 2010

Kubuntu 10.10 froze on me randomly. I shrugged it and rebooted. Then less than an hour later, another freeze. This was rare, so I started up Memtest86+ and let it go.

The results... were not encouraging.

Stock voltage on both. Never overclocked.

After pass 0 complete, swapped around various tests and ranges to check.

At pass 38, switched from full-range to test #5 2048M-3327M.

After pass 80, switched to various tests. No tests other than #5 generated errors.

So now my question is multipart...

One, is there anything that can be adjusted within linux itself to avoid triggering these errors (need to keep using this RAM for at least another week before I can afford to RMA it)?

Two, I'm assuming this does indeed point to RAM malfunction/damage, but if I'm wrong, what is going on here?

Three, if there is a way to adjust for these errors, should I still be RMAing it? If I do, I'm going to attempt to get some the same size/speed of ECC RAM. When I ordered originally, I wasn't aware the motherboard I'd picked supported ECC. Now I am.

Seems I'm not able to RMA this RAM at present, working with the company I got it from, but that option's just about out. Now, I read something about a kernel module called badram, but I'm finding little detail on how to go about activating it properly. Seems like if I can disable the one chip these errors are all occurring via, that would solve the issue just fine.
