How to login ?
The cursor is blinking but I am unable to enter the pass phrase; the only thing I can do is press the power button to shutdown. Even if I leave the PC running for a hour I can't type anything.
I know how to resolve the problem if I am able to login.
I am running FC12 64bit on my desktop and the problem is that after I enter my credentials at graphicall login screen (Gnome) the computer hungs i cannot moove the mouse, CTRL+ALT+DEL won't work the Caps and Scroll lock on my keboard are blinking. Been using fedora for a few years now, got a boot error this morning I just have no idea were to start looking. Got a luks encrypted root, getting the following after entering pass-phrase:
... Starting Stdio Syslog Bridge. Starting /dev/cgroup failed, see 'systemctl status dev-cgroup.mount' for details.
I was trying to set my wireless to start up when the computer is booted like the regular ethernet eth0 but I can't figure out how to set the WPA pass phrase with system-config-network
my ubuntu 10.10 64bit (in Dell Latitude machine) login screen is not working. the blank bar to type username and password is not appearing at all. In a quick appeareance there also a sentence: "permission denied". I've tried to browse this forum and seems no answer. I still can access the terminal though using alt+ctrl+F2 but i don't know how to access the desktop because when i hit alt+F7 it come back to login screen. how can i fix it? I have several files in the laptop that need to be saved, if not I probably just clean install it.
I'm using ssh key based authentication and I was pleased to find that when I set it up out of the box when I connected to my ssh server it prompted me with a password window rather than typing into the terminal and it remembered the pass phrase from one connection to the next.
For some reason it's stopped showing me the window, instead I'm logging in through the terminal, and it's stopped remembering my pass phrase between connections. since I don't know what the program was called that gave me the login box it's rather hard to search for.
want key based so i dont have to put in the password of user or passphraseI have edited the ssh_configfrom #Protocol 2, 1 to Protocol 2 with out the #I have edited the sshd_configPermitRootLogin yes to PermitRootLogin no#PasswordAuthentication no to PasswordAuthentication noi have the same file changes on the other 2 computers. I have 3 computer all together 1 xbuntu and the other 2 are ubuntu. All have the authorized_keys with chmod 400 persmissons id_dsa.pub and known_host fileone has id_dsa and it will not talk to the other computer either
aceraspire@momacer:~$ ls -l .ssh total 16 -r-------- 1 aceraspire aceraspire 605 2010-03-25 11:21 authorized_keys
I was logged in, but had not used the computer for about 48 hours. When I 'woke' the system, I could see that Thunderbird and Firefox were active, just as I had left them. I moved the mouse, the screen went black and the mouse pointer was visible (and could move). The system stayed like this for about 2 minutes, then wend down completely. I cut power, booted and got the login screen. Each time I put in my password, it looks as if it is loading but then just goes right back to the login screen. I have no problem logging in as root.
I have a netbook, on which I installed the netbook remix. It had ran fine until one day, I shut it down while it was updating. Now, on bootup, it will take me to the login screen and then basically freezes. The keyboard and mouse do not work and I cannot login to any profile. I tried a clean reinstall, but it only finds the preferences I have and sends me right back to the login screen.
I just finished installing 10.10 on my pc. the problem is that i cant login to the desktop i enter the password, the login sound plays and im stuck looking at the wallpaper. nothing else. i tried logging in safe mode and it worked. how can i get it to work normally?
pc specs: Pentium 4 2.6 ghz 512mb ram ati radeon 9600 graphics card
I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
I have no idea what happened to my OS(ubuntu10.04).it doesn't give me any option to enter my login name & passwd.i just get a blank(default) login screen.last time when it worked,i was trying to install GTK+2.8,but due to my mistake i deleted glib using cmd (sudo apt-get purge glib)and after that i even tried to launch terminal but it failed to launch.also tried to play media files using vlc but it didn't work.so i tried to restart my os and finally got stuck in the problem.i have no idea what to do,please help.Is there any cmd to see what problem occurred or which package is missing.
I installed KDE from synaptic, then I removed gnome from synaptic during the same session then I rebooted without having selected KDE from the session selector on the login screen as result I cant get pass the login screen. there is no option to select. I can boot in terminal mode but I don't know how to configure this from terminal.
I have a problem with Kubuntu 10.10. I cannot pass the login screen. When I type the password and press enter, the screen blinks once and I'm back at the login screen. When I try console login, there's no problem at all, but when I type startX, it ends up with a black screen. I wasn't configuring anything before the problem appeared, I think I just activated Kwallet.
I'm a linux noob, so I didn't really know where to look. Here are logs I found. Sry for my bad english.

Edit: I looked into a user.log, it seems there's a problem with accessing file .esd.auth. I used chmod, so the file should be accessible to everyone, but problem persists.
I'm having some trouble with Gnome's Login screen. What happens is that I type my username and password correctly, the login screen fades out and everything seems normal until the login screen appears again, I enter my username and password again and the login fades out only to appear again and again and again and so on.
Only the root user works with the login, and also if I use failsafe mode, then login in textmode and then use "startx" it works fine.
I have done a clean intall of Ubuntu 9.10 (K. Koala). Got everything up and working with 2 users, me with full privelleges and my son with a ltd account. Everything was working well so I moved the PC to my sons room, connected it to his TV and was able to log in as both users.
I changed the display settings on his account as when using the 1360 x 768 (16:9) setting the top bar and the last icons on the screen weren't visable, the desktop also started about 2inches from the left hand side of the screen, so changed them to 800 x 600 and whole desktop visable.
I switched user and did the same to my desktop. Then switched the pc off. I come back to it now, boot it up, get to the user/password screen, select me and enter my password, the screen flickers, little Ubuntu drum roll, and I return to the login screen. So I try my sons login, same result. No password authenticaion message, so I guess this isn't the issue. Surley just changing display settings can't have this effect?
i had no problems with the installation, no errors

DAY 3 i tried to install Win XP SP2 again when i boot up it shows "Boot from CD: Press any key to boot from CD....", then i press enter there a blinking underscore, in the upper left, in a black background for a few seconds and then boots up ubuntu i tried to use KillDisk(Free) but it hangs up, just like the boot menu i cant move up, down and enter to choose an option and then im thinking i can't use killdisk because it is for NTFS, am correct? DAY 4 ANOTHER = another fresh installed 10.04, my same cd, in another cpu which boots up with no problem and doesnt ask for user/pass because i selected automatic login MINE = my 'problematic' hdd which can't enter desktop in my cpu now i inserted ANOTHER in my cpu and it gets the same problem. asks for user/pass and cant go to desktop now i inserted MINE on ANOTHER's cpu and it boots up properly and doest ask for a user/pass now i dont know what to do. i can accept the fact that i can't use ubuntu, on my cpu, but i still want to know why.
I'm looking for a way of mounting an encrypted volume - home folder or a separate mount point, using only the standard login authentication (ie KDM or ssh). I thought the pam_mount module provided this, but I still get prompted for a password on the console at boot time. This is inconvenient as both my main desktops are headless HTPCs. I want the login credentials to be passed through, at log in time. I'm guessing this is possible, but to be honest, encryption is one thing in Linux that still completely confuses me.
I know it's possible i did it once but i can't do it again...
I wanna try to fix the GRUB or whatever the problem is. The error messages after login are: Nautilus can't be used & the panel encountered a fatal error.
excuse if this is incorrect section, not entirely sure where it would belong. I rarely find myself posting as i rarely have any issues. But this is persistently annoying, tho not a deal-breaker. Currently running latest Ubuntu 10.04, fully updated. Everything works fine, even better than any previous releases. No problems worth mentioning. But this is annoying, so anyway, here I am.
Installed Miro, loads up and runs fine, can download no probs. The section at the top where it says "account", and you sit over it and it drops down a window for your login details (username, password) so as to recall your personal settings, preferences, etc, but it's not working. By this, I mean the drop-down appears, but clicking the mouse in the window on the lines does not seem to register with it, you can't enter anything. Annoying, slightly frustrating. Has anyone had any experience with this,
Every time I start up my PC, I am always prompted to enter my login keyring password. Is there a way to start up my computer without always having to enter my login keyring password?
Earlier today I was setting up ssh on a new computer. I modified permissions on the Passwd folder to complete the setup. I few hours later when I went to sudo something in the terminal I received the notice of an incorrect password (after using sudo prior to this), even though it was typed correctly.
I tried to restart the computer to solve the issue, but was met with an Authentication Failed message, regardless of the user I tried to log in with. I was hoping I could log in with recovery mode but was unable to do that as well. I have searched a substantial amount and have not found a solution. Could this be an issue with permissions on either the Passwd or Shadow folder? If so, could these be changed if I ran a Live CD?
I've had a server setup working perfectly for the last 2 years. Today we installed a newer version of postgresql and recompiled apache/php.
Postgresql will not start now.
"service postgresql start" = /var/lib/pgsql/data is missing. Use "service postgresql initdb" to initialize the cluster first. To initdb we need to be as user postgres.
"su - postgres" = "no file or directory"
In /etc/passwd = postgres:x:26:26:PostgreSQL Server:/var/lib/pgsql:/bin/bash
how i can login as postgres user and enter these commands?
I just installed ecryptfs (debian Lenny). However, when I try to run it (as normal user), I get the following $ ecryptfs-setup-private Enter your login passphrase: And it wont accept any password (naturally since this is the first time I'm running it).
I'm trying to install the latest version of Ubuntu Studio. I tried it a few months ago with my HP... a live system worked fine, but when I installed it, it would go blank after the splash screen. I assumed it was some sort of incompatible graphics driver and gave up since I don't know enough about Ubuntu yet.Now I have a spare Dell XPS desktop sitting around and I got the latest version of Ubuntu Studio and tried it again. The install goes by erfectly, this time the welcome screen actually comes up and I can see my username. As soon as I hit enter, which I imagine should bring up the password prompt, the entire screen goes black and won't respond to anything.
I currently do not have Wine. I have uninstalled it and plan to reinstall. The last time I had it on Fedora was like 2 days ago. I had a problem that was really irking me. I was playing Myth War 2 (which worked flawlessly on Ubuntu 10.10) and right after I started, I went to move my character in the game and I just froze. Wine would not do anything, so I force quit, restart and the same thing keeps happening over and over. I do not know what is going on. I have been told it is my graphics driver, but it is current and up to date.
