Recently I installed a backtrack 4 final on my computer, but I couldn't browse the internet by wifi , when I use the slax networktool to analyze the newwork and see what the problem is, the tools showed as below:

I'm having trouble getting my wifi devices to work on my 128bit WEP network. I have a new Thinkpad T400, with an internal Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN. I also have some cardbus cards: a Lucent ORiNOCO Gold, a Linksys Wireless-G, and a TRENDnet TEW-421PC. I have them set up as interfaces eth2, eth1, and eth3. (The TRENDnet isn't recognised as a network card at all, so no interface for it.) I have installed the latest firmware for the Linksys card.
The /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* files are virtually identical for all of them, differing only in the HWADDR and DEVICE lines. So here's the behaviour:
1. The Lucent card comes up just fine.
2. The internal 5100AGN and the Linksys cards won't come up, and watching with iwconfig shows that they're either associated with my AP OR they've got an encryption key set -- but not both.
3. When trying to bring up the 5100AGN, I get the following messages:
iwlagn: index 0 not used in uCode key table
iwlagn: index 3 not used in uCode key table
/var/log/messages shows DHCPDISCOVER requests being sent, but they're bound to fail since the association with the AP with WEP isn't being completed. And yes, the ifcfg-* files really *are* identical except for the DEVICE and HWADDR lines. The /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file correctly maps the interfaces to the MAC addresses. So why does my antique ORiNOCO card work and thew newer ones fail? How can I track down what's being done wrong/not being done?

Why in expert mode does it look like Partitions 2 and 3 share the same sector / hd / Cylinders? Is this OK?

View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing the Nvidia driver from the repo on a Geforce 6800gs. In Kde4 all 3d applications seem to be working properly so I don't know why Gnome 3 is doing that myself. It wasn't working at all at one point and I am assuming that some update or another got it going. Perhaps a repo switch. Unfortunately I am not sure of what those changes may be. I just know that it does run now but only in fallback.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently uninstalled some unnecessary libs thinking that I could work around without them. It turned out I couldn't. So I installed every single one, and it seemed like everything was working fine. But then I tried to boot, and was thrown into a low-graphics. Well I tried to boot in a low-graphics environment temporarily but it turned out X just restarted. Then I tried to reconfigure the settings, but choosing any option it threw me back into the last menu without any action being taken.
So I googled up some lines it was vomiting at me and it indeed might be my xorg not configured properly. but every time I try to reconfigure it and I look into the .conf file it turns out it is completely blank. maybe I should also note I am sporting a 64 bit bubuntu, not an NVidia though, Intel Series 4 express chipset family thing. I think it is a GMA4500MHD but not sure, what shall I do so that I don't have to reinstall my beautiful pimped out system?
as Ubuntu is my only OS on this box.I had this PC running as a server for a few months with few reboots.I installed updates as usual yesterday, and hadn't changed anything configuration-wise since the last reboot. Well last night this server that I was running was moved to another Windows box and so I finally got to shut this PC down for the night. In the morning, I was greeted with an endless splash screen. It went on for 20 minutes without anything. I did update the kernel through update manager.
So what do I do? This machine has a 1TB HDD with a lot of very important data on it--reformatting is not a considerable option at this point. Which is bad because I don't know what else I could so when even recovery mode isn't working...

I had let it run over the weekend. It did not update so it is not just this one time. It never syncs again.
I've a problem booting on my fc14 64 bit. I install it yesterday and everything was ok. Then I updated it and I installed wireless drivers kmod-wl equivalent to my kernel version that is 2.6.35.6-45. I've a pavilion dv6 with a broadcom ach. for networking. So the next step was installing kmod-nvidia for my nvidia geforce but after rebooting my never allow me to log in! I can se the tipical blue-white progress bar loading nvidia drivers but not else!
my screen freeze itself after the progress bar became white. I would resolve by rescue mode but I've installed fc14 64 b using a usb-pen drive and I find no way to do this from live version.
I have ubuntu 10.04 installed. I have a problem when my usb IR receiver is connected, than suspend mode isn't working. System will jump into black screen and that's all. Only hard reset works. I tested this problem also on ubuntu 9.04 and situation is the same.Is there any way how to force suspend mode without "looking" on this device? Do you need any log file to trace reason of this problem ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhatever settings I use in the power manager, (Ubuntu default Gnome Power Manager) nothing appears to change. Screen brightness does not change when moving the slider, but is reduced after 5 or 10 minutes (haven't timed it. Probably whatever is default) of inactivity, even though the reduce screen brightness checkbox is unchecked. The latter is pretty annoying when watching online TV streams, especially since the video also exits full screen mode when the screen brightness is reduced.
The weird thing is, as the title implies, that when booting in recovery mode with FailsafeX the power settings seems to work. At least the screen brightness varies as the slider is moved I should probably mention that it is possible even in normal mode to adjust the screen brightness by using the buttons for adjusting screen brightness on my laptop (Fn + arrow up/down)
I have installed ubuntu 11.04 just yesterday and have installed the necessary nvidia graphic drivers too. But when I maximize any application(be it chrome, firefox, vlc, media player), the whole screen becomes white and when I escape from it to make it of small window, it again runs normally. Sometimes it work fine, but most of the times it is like what I told above. Please tell me some solution or I will have to go back to windows.

View 4 Replies View RelatedBAM your ftp doesn't work. Out of the blue my ftp connections stall when I ask for a directory listing. I am using ncftp as I have for several years. And after a long pause I get the answer:Data connection timed out.Falling back to PORT instead of PASV mode.I then get the listing and the connection continues in PORT mode. But not with FileZilla it just hangs. Also bit torrent no longer works. Set up is a home network of 6 machines reaching the internet through a linux firewall box, qwest DSL modem gt-701-gw. Nothing has changed but sometime in the last week something has changed because now FTP PASV and BIT TORRENT can no longer connect.
I am holding back from completely rewritting the iptables/shorewall rules and have spent the day with the website host 1 and 1 and Qwest. Trying to find a solution. This problem is universal, all machines (windoze and linux) and all software (coffeecup, ncftp, ftp, filezilla, bit torrent).
I'm using gnome shell 3.4.2.1 from the stable debian repository. 2 problems with the gnome-tweak-tool:
1) The extensions list is empty, even when the gnome-shell-extensions package is installed
2) in the non-classic mode only, setting made in the tool have no effect: e.g. Shell->Show date in clock does not toggle the date in the clock.

I forgot my new password. I followed the guide on how to recover the password but in recovery mode my keyboard doesn't work, I have tried a usb and a ps2 keyboard. What is going on? Or is there another way to reset my password?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried to make Compiz work using the experimental 3D support of the free Nvidia driver, because I am suffering from a bug in the proprietary driver (click here for launchpad entry). The free driver I mean is the one that shows up as "Experimental 3D support for NVIDIA cards" in the "Additional Drivers" manager (note: for some reason, this option will only present itself when no proprietary driver is currently active).
Now the strange thing is: the driver does not provide 3d support, and behaves generally awful (lots of glitches and so on) when I boot my system normally. But when instead I boot from the grub menu into recovery mode, then select "failsafe graphics", and then select "restart X", the whole thing works perfectly! So now I am running the experimental 3d driver, I have compositing working, 3d animations on docky. Somehow, the failsafe boot sequence does something right that my normal boot sequence does not. When I reboot in normal mode, everything is screwed up again.
I have no idea what statistics about my system I should include here, because I really have no idea what could possibly be wrong. I am running 32bits Natty in Classic mode, on an Ahtlon Dual Core 4850e machine, with a GeForce 6150 LE graphics card. These are the normal and recovery entries in my grub.cfg:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.
I ordered this USB 802.11n dongle for about $10 and am having problems.I found a firmware related bug (Bug #595455) that keeps it from working out of the box and got around that. I put the right firmware file in the right place and CAN CONNECT TO B or G Access Points.hen I put my AP in N-Only mode, I can see the network, but cannot associate. With the AP in mixed mode I can Associate using G.The most interesting thing I found was something that had very
few google hits (like 4). In the dmesg output after associating I see the message:

I want to switch my laptop from XP to Ubuntu, but right now, i cant risk installing it. i dont want to have it partitioned so i can dual boot, so for now i only run the try-it-out mode.Before i consider installing though, i want to see if i can get everything to work ahead of time, that way im not regreting instalation. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Ive tried to install the driver, but i am unable to do so. I have looked this up, and i have tried many things, and so far, none have worked.I was wondering if it was just part of the trial thing or not, but it is a Broadcom Wireless BCM4318 driver
View 9 Replies View RelatedI played with the graphics in kde4 and seem to have losy my installation. i have tried the rescue system option, recover system options and in desperation (i was just about to reinstall) tried booting in failsafe mode, and it worked!
where do i go to find out what the problem is regarding the normal boot mode? i think my pc is starting to resent the continual use of the reset button!
I installed ubuntu 9.10/9.04 on my usb key as live image couple of time. I have trouble when I try to install wine on my usb key. I am wondering what is the difference if I install my ubuntu into my usb key directly? will that be slower compared with live CD mode? I guess live CD mode may use memory as part of harddisk to save temepory files and normal usb linux installation won't do this for me. Is this true?
If so, do I have a choice to point my tmp directory to system memory area?
When I first installed ubuntu 10.10, the display was for some reason tinted green and shifted a few inches to the right. After experimenting with the resolution preferences, I eventually got it to a large resolution (1280x720 ... or something like that) yet is was quite blurry. I found out that the problem was with my monitor after I switched it to TV mode, then back to PC mode. It became perfectly clear! All I had to do then was adjust the screen positioning by shifting it left a bit.
Even though I have made the resolution I figured out to be default, whenever I turn the PC on after shutting down, it goes back to the "green-and-to-the-side" mode. :/ Ain't really a big problem, until I tried to fiddle with the resolution preferences s'more.
Somehow, I have set it to be twice as wide of the maximum my monitor can display, went back to being green tinted for some reason, and is completely shifted left (yet the right side is still visible) This means that I cannot see what is going on the left side, and cannot adjust the resolution preferences, nor can I click blindly cuz the border is only around my visible side of the screen. Now it is stuck like this.
I've researched many hours and eventually found the terminal command for the resolution preferences. it popped up on the visible side. Although it was to no avail cuz I HAVE TRIED EVERY SETTING AND OPTION and absolutely nothing changed. I assume a system restore would simply revert it back to the previous satisfactory settings, but the thing is I want to FIX it. I am new to this terminal stuff, so I want to learn it and all that. To put it simply, here's what I want:
Learn how to manually adjust resolution without depending on a simple dialog box. Make the satisfactory resolution default and consistent through turning it on and off. Link that could teach me the essential commands, all this googling is stressful. D:
The system always boot up in Graphic Mode. After installation of Web Server, I want to disable Graphic Mode and change it to boot to Text Mode to save memory. Is there a way to disable graphic mode?
