Slackware :: Laptop Mode Tools Screen Brightness Ability Working?

Mar 15, 2010

I'm currently trying to setup a minimal Slackware installation. Everything is well, except for screen brightness/hard disk control via laptop-mode-tools. I was wondering if anyone used it, and if they got it to work on their Slack systems, how they went about doing it.

Debian Hardware :: Getting Lenny Working On Macbook / Can't Use Brightness Keys To Change Screen Brightness?

Feb 9, 2010

I'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:

1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?

2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.

3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!

4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?

5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.

i had slackware 13.0 on my dell vostro 1320 and it was all good, but since the upgrade to 13.1 i cannot change the screen brightness with ctrl+up and ctrl+down keys..i'm not even sure how to start with this problem. from what i understand these keys 'call' a bios function...? so that would mean that some kernel module is not being loaded?or has the desktop environment lost the key mappings and that is causing my trouble?

Slackware :: Brightness Control Screen Bars Do Not Show Up

Feb 18, 2010

I have searched online with no success. The brightness control is working fine on my laptop. Problem is that the bars don't get rendered on screen. Instead I get like a static white line on screen everytime I press the brightness control. On boot however, I can see the correct bars. It is once I start my xsession, the bars do not show up. Here are my specs:

Slackware :: Asus EeePC 1005PE Brightness Not Working Properly

Jan 27, 2011

I've been through a few versions of Slackware on my Asus EeePC and I must, despite that fact that every has been having lots of trouble (or so I've heard) configuring Linux on it, it hasn't been all that bad for me. One problem that continues to persist is that the brightness setting is weird. It doesn't like to display on full brightness most the time, and when I try to change the brightness (function keys or OS function), it goes through 3 'mini-cycles'.

I've tried the Alien eeepc-acpi-scripts slackbuild a while back and it didn't work for me before. While searching for another solution, I found this thread on the Ubuntu forums: [URL]. But the major fix that seems to be working for them involves editing GRUB (which I don't have). Another post suggests simply updating the BIOS, but the BIOS updater is a Windows executable, and I'm not quite sure how he pulled it off in Linux.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Fix The Screen Brightness Keys And Get Them Working

May 22, 2010

I could find on the net to fix the screen brightness keys and get them working so I could increase the screen brightness. Nothing worked. For most or many people, some of the suggestions will work fine. For those of you who can't get them to work and are stuck with Ubuntu 10.04 on the NC20 with a dimmed-out screen, I have a quick workaround:

When you boot and get to the BIOS password prompt, use the function and up-down array keys to control the brightness there. The screen brightness will be carried through to Ubuntu. You might be able to do this at the GRUB prompt. The point is that the BIOS handles the screen brightness before Ubuntu, so it just works.

Slackware :: Kernel 2.6.33.4 Not Working On Laptop

May 31, 2010

The 2.6.33.4 kernel (using huge-smp) does not work for my laptop. It tries to boot, but after the line (Freeing init...) the screen goes blank. No logs since the filesystem is not yet mounted (I think). I've blogged about it already (posted it here, investigated myself, etc) for the previous versions of the kernel. I've been following every updates on -current and most of the thing works well except for the kernel. The kernel that works out of the box for my machine was 2.6.33. Previous kernel that works was 2.6.29.6. Then it went 2.6.33.1, 2.6.33.2 however, I need to compile using the config of 2.6.33 to make it work on .1 and .2. Now, I tried the same thing on 2.6.33.4 but some cryptic error occurred while loading the kernel.

That all were using huge-smp kernel. Now I tried to compile a generic-smp kernel (of course with initrd). (I did not install kernel modules yet). It works and it boots. However, since there are no kernel modules, it freezes after starting xfce at runlevel 3. So my guess is that somehow, my previous problems were either config related or module related. I though that if I will as well compile the kernel module, it may work, but as I look at source/k it seems that the source for kernel modules are coming the install package from slackware/a packages. Sorry, just a newbie.

Debian :: Laptop Brightness Gets Set To Maximum On Boot

Jun 10, 2010

My laptop brightness gets set to maximium each boot.

Just wondering if this is the case for other laptop users. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad SL500 (GeForce 9300M GS) and am running Testing.

Ideally I'd like it to remember my last setting (which is usually the lowest). It'd be nice not having to turn it down each time I reboot/power-on.

It actually starts off at a low setting but during the boot process (before gdm and just after the "Waiting for /dev" line I believe) it suddenly gets set to max.

Debian Hardware :: 7.8 - Laptop Brightness Control

May 7, 2015

I have an issue with Debian 7.8 (wheezy) on my laptop. I've had to reinstall Debian on my laptop and since then I've had issues getting brightness controls to work properly.

It's a Core i3 370M processor with Ironlake graphics, I've had this issue before with Ubuntu and I sought [URL] ..... I've tried the steps that worked for Ubuntu (thinking they'd be the same as they're both Debian based) and it hasn't worked.

What should I try to get it to work? Since I have updated my grub config (as per the Ubuntu fix), brightness doesn't work at all and my screen now tiles ever so slightly when moving the cursor from side to side. I'll revert those changes if need be or if this issue cannot be resolved.

I've tried to install the Intel graphics drivers from 01.org, however I get an issue with libglib dependencies not being satisfied ( libglib2.0-0(>=2.37.3) ) that how to resolve.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Backlight Brightness Wont Work?

May 5, 2010

I have an Asus P50IJ-X2 and in lucid the backlight cannot be adjusted. The panel app doesnt work, when I click on it and try to adjust the slider it just disappears. When I reopen it the slider is at the top left corner of the screen.

The function keys seem to be detected alright, but when I press them I get the notification that the brightness is going down but nothing happens. Also after the first press the notification gets extremely laggy. If I press the brightness keys again it takes 30 seconds or more for the notification to show up. Also after the first press my volume function keys have the same behaviour in the notification area as the function keys.

Also messing with the controls in the power settings doesn't do anything. The strange thing is all of this worked perfectly in Karmic. The function keys, auto dimming, everything just worked out of the box. I have no idea where to start trouble shooting this so can anyone give me some direction?
