Sep 29, 2010I have 4GB of memory but i just found that if i enable Software/Hardware remapping in the bios the bios will then show all 4GB usable from 2.5GB but then Ubuntu refuses to boot up saying a kmiser type message but it will if i disable those 2 options. is there any way to fix it apart from reinstalling ubuntu?

amd x3 64bit
4 GB RAM
ATI HD4350
Asrock MB
2 HD WD 320 put into RAID 0.
To make this configuration, I have not enabled the raid from bios (since Ubuntu gave me problems) but I followed this guide [URL] (Official guides) to configure software RAID offered by ubuntu. Everything went ok and it works perfectly but when released the 10.04 and the system asks me to update, you think there will be some problem or leaving will be updated throughout unchanged RAID configuration?

Oct 16, 2010Long story short, I changed these BIOS settings (and changed them back), but now Ubuntu won't boot: SATA RAID/AHCI Mode: from Disabled to AHCI
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctlr Mode: from IDE to AHCIThe last thing it says is "Init: ureadahead-other main process (nnn) terminated with status 4". Booting off an Ubuntu CD and entering Rescue mode gets me to a shell; the file systems are still there, but Reward for first solution (other than reload): $10 Starbucks card!
Debian Installation :: Disabled UEFI Secure Boot
Sep 26, 2014I have Acer Aspire S7-392. It has two 128GB SSD drives. They are using RAID 0. Currently there is Windows 8.1 installed on the RAID 0 drive.I am trying to install Debian 7.6 (wheezy) alongside Win 8.1 (dual boot). Actually I have already created linux partitions and installed mentioned Debian on my computer. I had to skip grub installation due to fatal error that had occurred. (Everything on existing RAID 0 volume).Now I am looking the way to install grub and boot Debian. I have disabled UEFI Secure Boot. It didn't work.
My question is:
1. Is it possible to have Win 8.1 and Debian dual-bootable on the same RAID 0 volume? How to install grub and boot debian?
2. If not, what am I supposed to do to achieve what I want (these two systems on one computer)? Delete old one RAID 0 and create two new: one for windows and one for linux partitions?
Fedora Hardware :: Using Legacy Bios Rom Option?
Mar 22, 2011I have Intel development board where I boot Fedora. If I use AMI bios then Fedora boot without video, I however can communicate to kernel via serial console. I suspect that this problem with video related to Legacy Bios Rom option. I however don't understand why it influences Linux, because it has good video driver. It was checked with another bootloader. what role is played by Legacy Bios Rom option.

Debian :: Nvidia-settings - Sync To VBlank Not Enabled Automatically
Jun 24, 2011I have triplebuffer set up in the xorg.conf, i am using the squeeze Nvidia drivers (the ancient one), installed debian way.
In nvidia-settings, i have enabled all the entries of sync to vblank, but after i log in, if i go a glxgears, i get 1000+fps, then i start nvidia-settings, the screen flickers when it starts for some reason, resolution is still at native (1366x768), after starting and quitting nvidia-settings, starting glxgears made it 60fps.
How to i make sure sync to vblank is forced? i prefer it this way.
Debian Installation :: Asus H97-Plus - UEFI (Secure Boot) / Black Screen Install
Aug 29, 2014I appear to have the exact problem that is currently listed in the 7.6 errata about EFI boot and black screen while trying to install ("Potential issues with UEFI booting on amd64"). The problem is that their workaround is not an option for me. This is a new rig and the motherboard doesn't appear to have any kind of ability to disable secure boot. I also don't know if my problem is exactly what they're thinking when it comes to that entry.
I'm able to get to the Grub install screen where you have the option to install Debian but when I select an option (any option) the screen turns off, back on but is black. All activity in the system stops after a few seconds (3-5 seconds) and that's it, she's done. I've tried all the options to try and disable secure boot but the options listed below are as close as I can get (and apparently should be sufficient).
The CD ISO used was the 7.6 netinst CD. I've also tried the Jessie ISO (Testing) that was downloaded about 2 hours ago. Same results. Unlike the errata which says "intermittent booting problems", my issue is consistently reproduced with no other result no matter what I do.
The rig:
-Asus H97-Plus running revision 2202
-Intel i5-4570
-32GB DDR3-1600
-128GB SSD Drive
-No external video card - using on board only but have tried both VGA and HDMI ports with the same result.
BIOS settings (is it still called BIOS or is it UEFI now?)
-Fast Boot: Disabled
-Launch CSM: Enabled
-Boot Device Control: "Legacy OPROM Only" or "UEFI and Legacy OPROM" (tried both)
-Secure Boot State: Enabled (it's grayed out and I'm unable to change this)
-OS Type: Other OS (supposedly makes it so you can boot non-Windows OS)

The obvious suggestions I've tried:
-tried USB boot & CD boot - same result

Jun 7, 2010Im trying to test out Ubuntu while running Windows currently, once i got the ISO image installed into my USB device by following the steps on the Ubunto site, i rebooted my PC and tried to get into BIOS to change the setting to boot through the USB device.
but i was unable to open BIOS.
this is all i saw in the bottom right side of my screen as far as commands to open some thing before my PC would boot through my Cdrive and load Windows.

Apr 5, 2011I am new to Debian. I have installed Debian on sda1, grub installed in /dev/sda . /dev/sda6 is SalixOs.
My fdisk -l report is this code...
I boot from sda, Debian recognised windows Xp installed on sdb1, but when I choose to boot from it, it simply reboots.
What could be the reason ? I am a newbie, please be patient with me.
I have solve the problem by installing EasyBCD in WinXp and added the Linux entries to it and booting from sdb.(changed in BIOS)
So, is it possible to uninstall GRUB-2 and install GRUB-Legacy ? Would it work on Debian-Squeeze ?
Debian Hardware :: Boot GPT Partition From BIOS (non-EFI)
Jul 7, 2014I have been running Jessie on an EFI motherboard for a while, booting just fine from a GPT formatted partition on my 3TB hard drive.
I had to re-purpose that PC, and put the hard drive into a different system that uses a BIOS instead of EFI.
Now when trying to boot, I get a text at the top of the screen that says:Code: Select allGRUB ...so it finds GRUB, but nothing ever happens. <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DEL> resets the system.
parted 2.3 says:Code: Select all 1 1049kB 3001GB 3001GB ext4 boot
2 3001GB 3001GB 32.5MB bios_grub, legacy_boot(I set the legacy_boot flag trying to fix this problem, but that flags the partition, not the MBR)
Is my problem that the "bios_grub" partition is at the end of the disk instead of the beginning?
I have read that newer versions of parted allow you to toggle the "pmbr_boot" flag directly in the MBR by using the command "disk_toggle pmbr_boot" or "disk_set pmbr_boot", but parted 2.3 apparently doesn't support this.
The pmbr_boot flag in the MBR seems more likely to be the problem than the partition at the end of the disk.
Do I need to find a newer version of parted that supports the pmbr_boot flag for MBR (if so, which version please), or do I need to move the partiton to the beginning of the disk?
Debian Hardware :: PC Doesn't Boot No More / No BIOS Screen?
Jun 10, 2010I got a new monitor (a used one), so i hooked up my very old PC. I went to the living-room and checked something. I went back and got a black screen. i did a "cold reboot" (?) and: nothing. Not even the BIOS-messages.
Now i am missing the terms: I replaced the "thing" where the monitor gets plugged (i would say its a PCI-slot, but as the graphics are build-in it doesn't seem to be a graphics-card. I simply don't know. I searched for PCI-slot +monitor and that picture should show it: picture). I rebooted with a live CD and voila: i get a screen. I rebooted into the installed OS and i get a screen. Then it freezes. "Cold reboot" (if it is called that way): again nothing.

Debian Hardware :: Bios To Find Out That Only 2 Settings To Choose Between "off" And "last State"
Mar 7, 2011I bought my previous laptop without thinking about whether linux would run or not, I ran into a lot of ton of trouble and had to use ndiswrapper for the wireless and I had to wait year before a patch came so the monitor could be used, and 1 year before it ran stable (back then I used ubuntu). I have a medion computer, their consumer service are very nice, however I fried the hard drive, and when I got the computer back the wireless card weren't visible from linux... I then went into the bios to find out that there were only 2 settings to choose between "off" and "last state", and last state apparently also meant off... in windows both off and last state could be turned into "on" by clicking Fn + F7... but this did not change the bios setting and therefore linux wireless were still off (I know it sounds strange).
Anyway My girlfriend needs a windows computer for gaming (and all of out computers run only linux with the exception of mine which dual boots), so I have desided to buy a new one. My main question is this: which laptop manufactures play nice with linux... I have heard only bad things about dell costumer service, and I want to buy a laptop that I can return w/o to much hassle if it doesn't perform as I am hoping...
My second question is, is there any way to check whether the graphics card and such are compatible with linux ahead of time, (w/o acualy buying it where you can do lspci and then submit it to some webpage) 3rd are there anyway to check whether the fn + key buttons and webcamp works ahead of time (this is only of minor importance, as I find that generally the sound up and brightness up/down works, and that's the most useful)
Ubuntu :: Accessibility Settings Not Staying Enabled?
Feb 7, 2010I use mousekeys for clicking/double clicking etc - this feature works great in Ubuntu, but I have recently switched to Xubuntu and MouseKeys seems to be turning itself off at random times. I haven't yet uncovered any rhyme or reason as to when or why this happens. I turn on mouse keys and at random times during computer usage mousekeys just turns off.

Jun 9, 2010I was wondering to restore on old laptop to working order. This laptop is an old early 2000's Sony Viao, which I found in the trash. Still powers on, and can boot the latest Ubuntu LiveCD. The issue is that it did not have a harddrive in it, and I really do not want to shell out money for a drive for a laptop this old, but would still like to bring it back into service as a thin client or general purpose web/email terminal. The BIOS does NOT have a USB boot option, and every tutorial I have seen requires that in order to boot Ubuntu from a USB stick (which is what I do have). What I am wondering is, is there any way to just keep the LiveCD in the drive and use that to boot the kernel, etc, and then have it look for the rest of the filesystem on the USB stick?

Aug 19, 2009I'm successfully dual booting and running Windows XP and Fedora 11 (with EVERY recent update installed), everything works fine EXCEPT that I cannot get both System times to synchronize.. Evey time I run Fedora I find the system time is always an hour different to Windows. Evert time I correct the system time in Fedora it affects my BIOS time settings. If I then go into Windows I first have to go into the BIOS and correct the BIOS time setting by one hour before I get the correct time in Windows........ Nothing is wrong with my Windows side of things, I know this because if I don't log into Fedora then my system times stay correct, only when I correct the settings in Fedora (which are always an hour out) do I get my BIOS changed. Also in Fedora, although I live in the UK (London) Fedora ALWAYS DEFAULTS TO Guernsey, no matter how many times I correct this to LONDON, Fedora always defaults back to Guernsey.... Has anyone else experienced this as I'm sure it's a Bug in Fedora, surely it shouldn't alter my BIOS settings, should it ??

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot From USB Stick If Write Protection Enabled
Nov 7, 2010I have a USB stick with a mechanical write protection (a small switch that disables writing on the stick). I have installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on this device usung the startup drive creator. If the switch is in the position that allows writing, Ubuntu boots as expected. But if I switch to write protection, I only see a blinking cursur. Because it is a live system on the stick I expected that it should work as well, because nothing should be written to the stick. Does anyone have an idea why it behaves like this and how I can change it?

May 6, 2010I donwload the Ubuntu 10.04 *32bits ISO image, and i burned each image with diferent speeds. Then, i tried to install, appears the Language Selection screen, all good. then, the Localization screen, I select Colombia (I'm from Colombia), clic on forward and the mouse shows the "loading animation", but the PC doesn't do anything (I let it for 30 minutes). I tried with the 2 CD, but ever the same result. And in some times when I try to out and reboot appears an error, so I have to reboot manually (with a button ).
And other problem, is that my BIOS doesn't let me boot form USB, so I can't install form USB. The last opportunity, and tried to install it, upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10, but in the instalation it gave me some errors, and in the 80% (or something like that), appears a window asking me to install GRUB AND EVERYTHING FREEZES, so I had to rebbot manually, and reinstall Ubuntu 9.10.

May 2, 2011I'm doing a fresh install of xubuntu 11.04 x86 32bit via the Alternative CD. My computer has two 2TB drives and I want to mirror the partitions for redundancy For the Linux partitions (ie root and swap) I'll be creating raid partitions on each drive and using software RAID 1 to create md partitions of type ext4 and swap.
For the GPT's bios boot partition, am I also meant to use software raid ? Ie create a raid partition on each drive and use software RAID 1 to create a md partition of type bios boot ? Or am I meant to not use raid partitions and just create a bios boot partition directly on each drive ? In this case, will xubuntu's install process and grub tools ensure that both partitions contain the relevant grub files or do I have to explicetly do somthing to ensure that ?

Dec 12, 2010I reinstalled XP to do a dualboot with 10.10 yesterday. All was fine. Today I went through and installed everything windows needed, and everything seemed fine. Then I upgraded the BIOS on my motherboard, and suddenly everything isn't fine. I can boot to Ubuntu just fine. But when I select Windows from the GRUB menu, it just sits there with a cursor on the screen now.
