Hardware :: Acer P215H Monitor 21.5 - Widescreen Crunchbang Horizontal Position

Sep 25, 2010

I have tried it with several window managers, xfce, gnome, kde, etc...OK, have tried every thing the monitor its self will let me do (horizontal position, clock) The screen works fine in lower resolutions. It does not work on 1920 x 1080 which is what the monitor says it will do, and it does it just fine under Ubuntu and Fedora as well as winders. I guess basically i just need to know if there are any tricks you all may know or if you can direct me to a place where i may find linux driver for this monitor because im at a loss, BTW it does this on all slackware based distros. Acer P215H 21.5" Widescreen

General :: Acer G215H Widescreen Off-center In KDE X-win Environment - Dist - Slackware 13.0

Aug 9, 2011

I've recently installed Slackware 13.0 without a hitch (I haven't tweaked much yet), ran adduser, switched to the new account in a second virtual screen, typed in 'startx' and was pleased to see things start up.

Then I discovered the widescreen display was off center, leaving a black bar on the right edge of the screen and the menu button in the lower left corner completely off screen and not visible (even the menu when I was able to click around and pull it up shows only the right edge of the menu box). I have no idea how to properly configure a widescreen and the documentation is a little confusing.

Hardware :: Getting Widescreen Tilt Monitor To Look Right In X ?

Mar 17, 2010

I have a nice widescreen HPL2045w monitor. My system has an NVIDIA GeForce 6150 card and I'm using the NVIDIA driver for X (Linux AMD64) and it's GREAT ... except I have A HUGE PROBLEM when I try to use xrandr to rotate the screen over to the left!

(And that it the whole point of this monitor, since it's so wide... I want to have a "long" screen for viewing lots of text and stuff!)

Ok what happens is when I do "randr -o left" it rotates, but there's a huge chunk of the X desktop off to the right of the screen and I can't see it. Is there a way to resize it? Also, most of the time the desktop ends well before the bottom of the monitor. I can see the background image that I have on my xdm screen peeking through, so it MUST be possible to utilize the whole screen ... I found a few modes where I can get to the bottom of the screen, but ALWAYS no matter what about half of the desktop is lost and hidden to the right.

I have been trying to create a new mode with xrandr but this has not been working.

What do you do when you have a widescreen tilt monitor and want to rotate it and use the long vertical screen for your X session? Shouldn't the X session just resize everything to fit? Or can this be done? I don't need super resolution guys, I just need to get everything to fit in the screen... would love your help!

I'm using stable Debian (lenny), with all the latest X, xrandr, the nvidia package, etc. I'm not afraid to experiment but I'm coming up empty!

Hardware :: Widescreen Monitor For Text ?

Jul 15, 2011

My old 19" LCD Samsung monitor has given up, I find it is very expensive to replace it with a new LCD monitor of the same size and geometry as most new monitors on the market are now "widescreen".

My question is: is there anything odd I should expect if I buy one of those (Samsung S20A300B) for word processing applications (no interest in graphics)?

At first glance, the wide screen seems to be a bonus as it displays more of the layout of (my) HTML pages but I need more crisp characters than good and nice colors.

the screen plays up sometimes. it gets a yellow line down one side. it's the office type 4:3 aspect monitor which seem to be getting rarer. if i switch to a widescreen 16:9 format, would i need a new graphics card?

i don't play games. but sometimes there'll be stuttering when i'm watching a videos video. whether this is the screen or something else i don't know.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dual-monitor Mouse Position Jumps When Moving Off-screen

Nov 4, 2010

I have a dual-screen set-up with Ubuntu 10.10. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. I use my lower-resolution laptop screen on the left and a larger monitor on the right. The monitor is also physically higher than the monitor. See attachment for a screenshot.I have correctly set up my displays so that if the mouse is in the middle of the screen it can move from one screen to the other without jumping. The jumping happens when moving off of one screen in an area where the other screen is not directly next to it (some people call this 'the void').

Example: (See the attachment for a visual example of this.) My mouse is in the external monitor (right monitor). As I move the mouse to the top-left of the monitor (position 1), I by mistake go a little too far and instead of hitting the Ubuntu applications menu, I ended up at the top-right of the laptop monitor (left monitor; position 2). I quickly realize my mistake and move the mouse back to the right monitor, but now the mouse is at the middle-left position (position 3).This same error occurs by moving the mouse on the laptop monitor (left monitor) passed the bottom-right position. This is a big problem when scrolling vertical scroll bars on the laptop monitor (left monitor).I am looking for a fix that if the mouse is at position 1 in the attachment and I move the mouse left, it stays at position 1 and does not go to position 2.

I have an Acer 1200X with an Nvidia 8200 graphics GPU integrated on the motherboard. I have an HDMI and VGA output. I have downloaded the Nvidia graphics driver using envyNG and the old fashioned way. I have tried configuring the monitors 15 ways from Sunday in the configuration and I cannot for the life of me get dual monitors to work.

When I go into configuration with the Nvidia wizzard it blanks like its going to work then just stays black with the mouse cursor. I also cannot save as I get a "parsing" error. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and have even tried using envyNG to get the monitors to work on twinview... NOTHING Hope someone can help!

My dad who is a Linux nut came over to help and he left 3 hours later because were tempted to chuck the computer out the window...I need to figure this out as this is going to be my work computer and I need dual screens.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Display Awful (color Depth) Acer Aspire 1710?

Oct 29, 2010

I've been desperate to successfully install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire 1714SMi (old and huge, I know), but the display suffers from a greatly reduced color range, strange white haze/ fine vertical lines and virtually ilegible text. I downloaded some NVidia Drivers for Linux from nVidia & from here: [URL] Can't get any of them to work, and I find it hard to believe it's so difficult to get a basic display to work. I'm about to give up.

Ubuntu :: Could Not Get Actual CrunchBang Install Files

Apr 10, 2011

I had the problem: "could not download all repository indexes". On Cruncheee (An EEEPC specific Crunchbang distro), which I managed to "fix" by changing the /etc/apt/sources.list file by replacing it with stuff I found in a guide. (Shown at end). Now when I press the Reload button on Synaptic no more errors come up! But when I search for "audacious" (music player) I can only find "crunchbang-audacious-theme", and no actual crunchbang installing things.

What have I actually done to my my sources.list file, did I tell it to look elsewhere for servers with lists of dependencies? Is a "repository" just a place on the internet which has lots of dependencies in it? If I were to just add more and more stuff to my sources.list file and kept pressing "reload" on Synaptic, would I eventually find some packages to install Audacious? What does "sudo apt-get" do? Is that exactly the same as finding something on synaptic and clicking it?

My new sources.list:
## Add comments (##) in front of any line to remove it from being checked.
## Use the following sources.list at your own risk.
deb [URL] dapper main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src [URL] dapper main restricted universe multiverse
[Code].....

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound On CrunchBang 8.10 Using ES 1869 ISA Card?

Jan 2, 2010

I ran into this issue while setting up a Compaq DeskPro SB PD1000 Series computer, using CrunchBang Lite 8.10 as the OS. After some diagnosis, I'm reasonably certain that the issue is something that would affect all Ubuntu variations, so I marked this thread that way.

The issue is that the sound was not working. Since the sound card on this machine was an old ISA PNP (plug-and-play) card, I assume it was just not detected automatically. The output of command 'lsmod' showed no sound modules were loaded, so I figured that loading the correct driver would solve the issue. Command 'lspci' didn't show the card (because it's ISA), so I installed the 'pnputils' package ('sudo apt-get install pnputils') and looked at the output of command 'lspnp -v'.

The lspnp output showed a card was present but not active, and identified it as an ESS1869. There's an appropriate ALSA module called 'snd-es18xx', so I loaded that using 'sudo modprobe snd-es18xx' -- since the driver is plug-and-play compatible, no further options should be needed. The module loaded fine, and 'lspnp -v' now shows the card is active. Also, the output of 'aplay -l' shows a card is seen -- 'ESS AudioDrive ES1869', which appears to be the correct hardware. However, I still get no sound, and trying to launch 'alsamixer' returns an error message about the default device not being present.

Debian :: No Widescreen ?

Dec 15, 2009

I'm currently experiencing some problems when plugging my linux box into a Widescreen monitor / HDTV (using the VGA slot). The problem is that it the driver only seems to support 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions on this Full HD TV / Monitor; however, when plugged into a standard monitor the 'xrandr -q' command shows a vast array of resolutions from 640x480 upto 1280x1024.

This is a pretty skinny install of Debian Lenny using just LXDE desktop and hardly anything else.

Can Linux support widescreen / HD resolutions and if so, how do I configure this install to work with my spanking HDTV using the VGA port?

Hardware :: Connect Linksys WPC54gs (bcm4318) Wireless Adapter In CrunchBang?

I recently tried to install Crunchbang on my IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop. Everything went OK as far as I can tell (I still have to adjust acpi and display settings), but I cannot get my laptop to connect to the internet via wireless (wired connection works fine). I've done a good deal of searching online, and I realize that my wireless adapter (wpc54gs, bcm4318 chipset) is problematic in linux, and that b43-fwcutter is typically required. I did install b43-fwcutter, and it seemed to install OK, but nothing subsequently happened when I opened networkmanager. I'm not sure at this point if my problem is that I don't know how to configure any wireless adapter in crunchbang, or if it is that my particular adapter is not being recognized.
