General :: Acer G215H Widescreen Off-center In KDE X-win Environment - Dist - Slackware 13.0
Aug 9, 2011
I've recently installed Slackware 13.0 without a hitch (I haven't tweaked much yet), ran adduser, switched to the new account in a second virtual screen, typed in 'startx' and was pleased to see things start up.
Then I discovered the widescreen display was off center, leaving a black bar on the right edge of the screen and the menu button in the lower left corner completely off screen and not visible (even the menu when I was able to click around and pull it up shows only the right edge of the menu box). I have no idea how to properly configure a widescreen and the documentation is a little confusing.

I have tried it with several window managers, xfce, gnome, kde, etc...OK, have tried every thing the monitor its self will let me do (horizontal position, clock) The screen works fine in lower resolutions. It does not work on 1920 x 1080 which is what the monitor says it will do, and it does it just fine under Ubuntu and Fedora as well as winders. I guess basically i just need to know if there are any tricks you all may know or if you can direct me to a place where i may find linux driver for this monitor because im at a loss, BTW it does this on all slackware based distros. I'm using slack 12.2 with a custom 2.6.27.31 kernel with uvesafb already working- 1280x800 isn't natively supported by my graphics though :-(. Which is why I'm doing this.
So I'm trying to use this gentoo tutorial to get 915resolution working on my laptop for a widescreen framebuffer. Problem is, he doesn't give any documentation on what the files in the initramfs are supposed to be or do:
Code:
Can I put it in /sbin instead without breaking anything? I don't even know what v86d.real is, it doesn't exist on my system. If somebody could explain that, that would be great.
2.) There's also a script called "dump_bios" in the slackbuild of 915resolution that's supposed to go into /usr/sbin along with the 915resolution binary. If I'm moving this to /sbin, should the dump_bios script go with it? Well, since it's only a dd command, might as well post it:
Code:
I think those are the only questions I have right now, though I'm probably leaving some out.
Ah, here's one hurdle: /usr is on a different partition than /, so I can't just change the initramfs script (I think- isn't the initramfs called before everything in fstab is mounted?).

when running XFCE, changing the font in qtconfig fails to change fonts in KDE apps such as ktorrent and koffice. This is rather annoying because default KDE fonts are excessively large and blurry on my monitor. Is there any way to force KDE apps to obey qtconfig settings?

I'm trying to "convert" my cousin with Slackware somehow. Her laptop is an Acer Timeline 3810T. But i'm having some problem with the hotkey fn+f5. F5 works, but fn+f5 (should have been XF86Display) doesn't. It doesn't generate any acpi nor x event as i checked (on slackware at least). BIOS upgraded but wouldn't fix, searched but couldn't find any talk about this.I wonder if anyone had experienced the same problem. Hope i could fix this else i probably must install XP (if this was mine, i probably would be fine with xrandr though :P)

Can anyone help with me configure my dual-screen monitors for rotation? I have xrandr 1.1. Have tried various approaches, nothing takes. I can't even get the xrandr options to show up in KDE's Display control panel.

I'm setting my CLASSPATH in /etc/profile.d/jre.sh. In a login shelleverything is fine. In an xterm window, the CLASSPATH consists of two of every intended entry. In jre.sh I am doing aCode:export CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/many/paths/to/jarsSo I'm guessing this is getting run twice in the xterm case. Can someone explain what's going on here and what I should do to remedy this?

spent endless time trying to get multiple monitors going and have had a bit of success -- got two showing just fine. However, when I try to access the page I mention in the title, Slackware hangs hard -- only the red button will get me out. This is recent. I had dual monitors going before and that didn't happen, I think one monitor was at 800x600 and the other at some wide screeen rez. Anyway all by itself the 800x600 decided to go to 1024x768. Now, note that it all shows fine, no issues of any kind on the monitors themselves, xrandr works

Got Slackware 12.2 and there's no sound. Ran alsaconf and it finds three 'soundcards' whereas I have only onboard sound. None of the choices achieve anything. Interestingly, Windows detects the sound as coming from 'C-Media AC97' whereas alsaconf doesn't see that, but reports two others:
ATI Technologies Inc. RV 610LE audiodevice Raedon HD 2400 PRO
VIA Technologies Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller
As well as:

You don't run x windows in the cession. Let say you run init 3 at the prompt and login your acount. Is it possible to run a command that let you open a little screen with graphic interface and that accept the mouse. Exactly the inverse of the console in an X environment.

I've just noticed something odd with 'su'. When you run 'su' with both the '-' (aka -l) and -c command options like this: "su -l user -c command" it doesn't appear to run /etc/profile before running the specified command even though the -l option is specified. If you run "su -l user" without the -c it does run /etc/profile.
Now, on other linux such as fedora it works as expected and runs both /etc/profile followed by the command specified on the '-c'. I'm fairly sure it used to work this way on Slackware (and every other UNIX I've ever used) too. "su -l root -c env" is a good way to see, as you'll find most the environment variables are missing.

i've been trying to make a decision on which desktop environment to use and i've been using a few over the past week to try to decide which one. I liked gnome 2.x previously but have been really turned off it since it's not supported by Slack and 2.x is no longer even supported by gnome. I tried xfce, since it's gtk2 app as well and i really wanted to like it, i did; but there is just some things that make me wish i was using gnome. Anyways, i was wondering which third party gnome would be best suited for me. I'm using Slackware 13.37 and i want gnome 2.x, not 3.
Pat's old documentation recommended,
http://gsb.sf.net
http://gware.sf.net
and i checked out them sights, but the last updates seemed to have been years ago.

I am currently on the job of customizing my laptops for different usage areas. I am very new to Linux (~2-3 weeks) and have not yet developed a solid understanding of the purpose of the different desktop environments. This is why I came to you. I assume most DE's can perform the same tasks as any other DE if you tweak stuff enough, but I am currently lost in this wilderness, and would love to hear the strengths and weaknesses for the different DE's so I can settle for something and get good at it... (I'm going to mainly use it for programming, if that's any vital information.

This is a new (Less than one month) old netbook that is just running Slackware 13.1 with KDE.Now, every 10 or so minutes I'm getting a "Battery disconnected/Not found" error and it's insisting I plug in.Now, the battery itself is fine since by ignoring these messages, I'm getting 5-6 hours battery life easily but none the less. It's a concern. It appears to be software related rather than a bad battery.Has anyone experienced this and/or know of a solution?

STEP 1) Install Slackware 13.1 (everything works out of the box*) Gotcha: 3d isn't enabled in X Fix: Yes it is... run glxgears from a console or run glxinfo | grep render.
Gotcha: No CD drive to install from Fix 1: Get a usb CDROM drive Fix 2: Boot off of a thumbdrive using the usbboot.img (found on disc 6) Gotcha: Card Reader (ENE Technology) doesn't work Fix: You have to use the MMC driver-modprobe mmc_core modprobe sdhci modprobe mmc_blockIt should now show up in dmesg and /dev/mmcblk0p1 should be created if it is an SD card. NOTE: SD Card portion works using SDHCI driver. NO DRIVERS for XD and MS cards yet. *Card reader is gimped due to ENE Technology being evil.

I'm setting up Tomcat right now, and I've been directed to create a tomcat_home (catalina_home as of writing) environment variable.
Where is the default location for env variables in Slackware? My current inclination is to create a new script /etc/profile.d/tomcat.sh.

IN 3.5.10 I am able to display the full $PROMPT_COMMAND environment variable in the Konsole title bar. Kind of handy and I did not need to display that information in the $PROMPT variable.
In 4.5.5 I am having trouble figuring out how to make that work correctly. The title bar displays only the directory name rather than the full path and user name.
This is my $PROMPT_COMMAND:
history -a;echo -ne "33]0;${USER}@`uname -n`: ${PWD}07"
All I see in the title bar is:
dirname: bash
I should see:
username@hostname: full path to present working directory

I'm currently experiencing some problems when plugging my linux box into a Widescreen monitor / HDTV (using the VGA slot). The problem is that it the driver only seems to support 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions on this Full HD TV / Monitor; however, when plugged into a standard monitor the 'xrandr -q' command shows a vast array of resolutions from 640x480 upto 1280x1024.
This is a pretty skinny install of Debian Lenny using just LXDE desktop and hardly anything else.
Can Linux support widescreen / HD resolutions and if so, how do I configure this install to work with my spanking HDTV using the VGA port?

I have some experience using linux systems, but my recent Fedora 10 (x86_64) install is my first attempt at installing and maintaining my own. I installed it to a clean second hard drive in my computer (Vista and XP partitions were previously installed on the first drive). The install was a bit of a fight, anaconda seemed to dislike my graphics card (ATI HD2900) and I finally got this issue resolved by running the install with 'linux xdriver=vesa'. Once the install completed I had to run a repair install to get a functioning grub, and even that I had to manually fix during the boot process because grub mixed up the two hard drives.
In Fedora I cannot choose any widescreen resolutions. I think this is either related to my hacky install process or ATI driver incompatibilities. I followed the URL... guide to try to update the drivers and have run a full system update. Neither has resolved my problems, and now I am fresh out of ideas.
Is there some other driver update process I should try, or should I just reformat the drive and try again with crossed fingers and a clean Fedora install? As an infuriating side note, I helped a friend install from the same DVD after my install fearing he might have the same issues, but the installer seemed to do everything automatically (his install was also on a second drive with Vista on the first, but his video card is a newer model ATI card than mine).
