i was wondering if we can tilt our desktop environment to horizontal position.. what i meant is tilt 90 degree so that i can books with my head on the bed...
do i have to configure xorg ? or any shortcut / software to do this?
I have tried it with several window managers, xfce, gnome, kde, etc...OK, have tried every thing the monitor its self will let me do (horizontal position, clock) The screen works fine in lower resolutions. It does not work on 1920 x 1080 which is what the monitor says it will do, and it does it just fine under Ubuntu and Fedora as well as winders. I guess basically i just need to know if there are any tricks you all may know or if you can direct me to a place where i may find linux driver for this monitor because im at a loss, BTW it does this on all slackware based distros. View 1 Replies View Relatedi have an dedll inspiron 8600 laptop. i just installed the new ubuntu, 11.0.4 i think. i installed from a usb. in the installation i wiped the whole drive with no partitions. i booted it while connected to the Internet and it loaded updates as it went. as far i know, everything went just as it was supposed to. the new os seems to be behaving just as it should.
however, (always a catch, right?) now, the right third of my screen appears to have thin black Phoenician blinds from top to bottom.
i can still partially see the icons in the top right corner, but not well enough to use them really, but they are active. i tried rebooting, but it didn't help.
i promised my girlfriend that this would make our dog poo machine run great and we could get more work done faster. i really hope i didn't make a mistake. the dog house gets me claustrophobic.
I was wondering if in Gnome you can organize icons by Name/Type/View/Size and if you could organize them from Top to Bottom, Left to Right, etc?
Example:
Normally when you clean up icons they are organize in the following manner:

[X]
[X]
[X]
Left to Right, Top to Bottom organization would be like this:
[X] [X] [X] [X]
I prefer it this way and also KDE has it.
I tipically love the clock to appear in the desktop upper right corner but... everytime I reboot, the cairo-clock appear in the middle of the screen losing the right place "memory", and I have to replace it manually all the times...I've tried with another clock, the screenlet provided one and I met no problem with this issue, but before to give-up and canging clock I want to try this last chance.In the autostart menu I created a new item called "cairo clock" that execute the command: < cairo-clock > but I suppose there could be a better command to configure by passing also the desktop position coordinate.

The issue is that Gnome will not "remember" the size and location of the window in which an app was last run. For example - I run Disk Usage Analyzer and stretch the window to be the full height of the screen and about half the width of the screen and move it to the far left of the desktop. I then close the app. The next time I run it the app comes up in a "default" window size, not the size I last used, positioned randomly on the desktop.
p.s. I should add that some apps seem to remember their prior window size/position. For example OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Nautilus.
I installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.

It is being recognized as simply Left/Right keypresses, e.g. Alt-[Left Tilt] backs up a page in Firefox. Does anyone know how I can remap that to something else? In my case, Alt-Tab and Alt-Shift-Tab.

I have a nice widescreen HPL2045w monitor. My system has an NVIDIA GeForce 6150 card and I'm using the NVIDIA driver for X (Linux AMD64) and it's GREAT ... except I have A HUGE PROBLEM when I try to use xrandr to rotate the screen over to the left!
(And that it the whole point of this monitor, since it's so wide... I want to have a "long" screen for viewing lots of text and stuff!)
Ok what happens is when I do "randr -o left" it rotates, but there's a huge chunk of the X desktop off to the right of the screen and I can't see it. Is there a way to resize it? Also, most of the time the desktop ends well before the bottom of the monitor. I can see the background image that I have on my xdm screen peeking through, so it MUST be possible to utilize the whole screen ... I found a few modes where I can get to the bottom of the screen, but ALWAYS no matter what about half of the desktop is lost and hidden to the right.
I have been trying to create a new mode with xrandr but this has not been working.
What do you do when you have a widescreen tilt monitor and want to rotate it and use the long vertical screen for your X session? Shouldn't the X session just resize everything to fit? Or can this be done? I don't need super resolution guys, I just need to get everything to fit in the screen... would love your help!
I'm using stable Debian (lenny), with all the latest X, xrandr, the nvidia package, etc. I'm not afraid to experiment but I'm coming up empty!
I am very happy with Ubuntu 10.04 that I downloaded, burnt to CD and installed (I am a newbie to Linux), but I am finding a little problem on an old Sony lap-top, with a rather old-fashioned almost square screen.The top bar of any screen image is just off the top, and I can only see a quarter of it, which makes using the max/min and cancel buttons a bit hard to use. I know I can resize the screen, but it goes back to the original next time it is used. Is there a permanent fix?

I'm running a regular installation of Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome.I would like to try LXDE and other desktop environment,BUT without installing the entire Lubuntu.Last time I tried something like that,I installed the kubuntu-desktop package which came with a ton of software I didn't want.I couldn't even remove it easily, so I followed a tutorial which made me remove some of the software I had BEFORE messing with KDE.So what I'm asking is simple-is there a standalone package that installs nothing but another desktop environment? I also want to be able to remove it with a simple apt-get remove.

I could do this under Windows, I have an old copy of W2K server install I got from my networking class... but I'd rather do it via Ubuntu.I know there are automated install options but I can't figure out how to make use of them. I have been using Debian desktop environment for years. There, I can sudo init 1; do maintenance; exit to desktop environment again. But when I `resume' from Ubuntu-10.10's maintenance mode, I can just Ctrl-Alt-F1 to login and there seems not an interesting process running.

For example in fedora the default desktop is setup in this file: /etc/sysconfig/desktop. So I can change the default desktop for all users just by modifying this file. How can this be done in ubuntu?
