Hardware :: Server Not Booting After Trying To Mount New HHD

Dec 22, 2010

I am running ubuntu server 10.10. It was running fine until I tried installing a second hdd to back up my desktop (xp) and laptop (win7). I was following this guide: [URL]. I formatted it first as ext3 then realised I need fat32 so reformatted as vfat. When I went to mount the drive I got a warning that started:

Code:
gksu:2400 Gtk-warning........
I rebooted using:
Code:
shutdown -r now

But when it restarted it stopped at a blank screen with a flashing 'underscore' in the top left corner. Where to go from here? Do I need to do a fresh install?

General :: Cannot Mount CDROM When Booting From Live CD HP DV6?

Dec 3, 2010

I'm trying to get back into Linux after a few years off.

I have tried booting from a Live CD using Flash Linux and Damn Small Linux.

Flash Linux reports unable to mount CDROM and then provides a command line - I assume I have the kernel, a shell and little else at this point? Can I mount the CD and continue?

DSL seems to do something similar but freezes with a blank screen. I have the option of entering parameters prior to booting with DSL (but not with Flash) I have tried the parameter which copies the CD to RAM and then boots without success.

I plan on installing Debian to my HD in the near future but felt like playing around with Live CDs prior to this in order to get reacquainted.

I have googled this issue and it seems there are other noobs out there with the same model of PC (HP DV6) who are having similar problems but I could not find a solution.

As an aside - this is the kind of issue that IMO, still prevents Linux from becoming a mainstream OS.

Debian Installation :: Booting From USB HDD - Error 17: Cannot Mount Selected Partition

May 10, 2010

I have a Dell VOSTRO laptop that I use for windows Vista. I have an old disk drive that I put into a USB case and now I want to use that for a Debian system. I do not want to install grub on my laptops HDD, if I do I need to have the USB HDD plugged in everytime I boot and i find that a real pain. I installed Debian on the USB drive with no problem and when it asked where I wanted to install GRUB I picked the USB drive ( I think ). Now when I interupt the boot and tell it to boot from the USB drive grub comes up with the correct menu but when I pick Debian I get the following messages:

Fedora Networking :: 12 Booting In VMWare WS But Cannot Mount/access Windows Host

Apr 1, 2010

I have Fedora 12 (Fedora-12-i686-Live.iso) installed and booting in a VMWare workstation (version 6.5.3). I am able to login as the LiveUser.

I need information on how to access the drives on my host which is WindowsXP. My C: on the host is shared, and my network adapter for the VM is "NAT".

The only directory listed in my /mnt directory is "live".

My Fedora enviornment is "bare bones". There is nothing installed except for the original files from the "iso" loading procedure.

I also have been unable to get the VMWare tools installed, and I don't know if this is related. I don't mind bypassing this if this isn't required. My only desire right now is to access my C:

OpenSUSE Network :: Nfs Server On 11.2 - Mount.nfs: Mount System Call Failed

Apr 29, 2010

I've tried to get an opensuse box I have to share a directory via NFS. I've failed each time, but I thought that the third time, I'd enlist some help from the forums, if I could. how do I know that the nfs server and not the client is the problem? Short answer is: I don't! That's why nfs (and many netwrk problems) are laborious, you're troubleshooting needs to take place at both source and desitination. Next question, what do I have set up so far? Well, I did download the nfs server kernel stuff (two months back) and /etc/init.d/nfsserver start seems to get set up OK. No errors and the daemons nfsd, idmapd, mountd area all running. So, I *think* that part is OK. I have the share set up properly in /etc/exportfs and have "exportfs -r" it.

OK, now onto the trickier stuff: the client and iptables. On the client pinging to the nfserver box is perfect, and I have rpcbind running. the reported error is "mount.nfs: mount system call failed" though from experience nfs errors don't mean a whole lot. However, I will go off and check now and see if I need a mountd running on client-side too. Then there's iptables .... ouch, that could be a long and painful trek. I don't see any specific ports being blocked, and it's the iptables that the default v11.2 opensuse came with. I did turn them off and the problem was the same, so whether wishfl thinking or not, I'm hoping it's not an iptables issue.

Server :: Auto Mount USB Drive To Specified Mount Point After Reboot

Jul 19, 2010

I have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.

Perty self explanitory, I'm trying to boot up ubunto server edition 10.10 from a USB stick (pen drive) and it works fine until step 3 when it says "Your installation CD-ROM couldn't be mounted. This probably means that the CD-ROM was not put in the drive. If so you can insert it and try again

Try again to mount the CD-ROM? <Yes> <No>"

I don't have an installation cd-rom! I put the .iso file onto a memory stick, inserted it into my old computer (which i will turn into a server later) , restarted it and got past the first two slides and got this error? Do I have to put the iso on a cd-rom?

The installation completes up to the point where the system needs to reboot , however after the reboot it does not start up again and get stuck at the message: "Trying to boot from drive c:"

We used the rescue option to mount the installation and cant find nythign wrong, even with the grub setup (except that it points to hd96 as its primary disk). we tried changing this to hd0 as well but still no luck.

After about 3 installations we are still not having any luck.

I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??

Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?

Ubuntu :: Booting On Laptop But Not Server?

Mar 10, 2011

this may seem a little odd, but I used my server to install Ubuntu on to an external hard drive. (long story short, the server won't recognize any internal hard disks with any type of video card installed. The video card works just fine when installed, and it will read both CDs/DVDs and USB drives just fine, it just refuses to even notice hard disks. I'm assuming an IRQ issue, but I've tried changing them with no success.) Having installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my external 250g hard disk, I attempted to boot it from the USB drive, since the system has that option. It tells me "error: out of disk" and goes to the Grub rescue prompt. Having followed multiple threads and advice posts, including on this forum, I was unable to resolve the issue. For s'n'gs, I hooked affore mentioned external hard disk to my laptop and tested it. Boots just fine. Then hooked it back to my server to see if it would boot. Still no dice [Just a side note, no the video card is not currently installed in said server, I was testing it to see if the thing would install and operate alright before I tested it with video card installed. Only ever make one change at a time, that way if something explodes, I know what caused it.] My initial objective was to get an operating system that would boot with the video card installed. Any ideas what might be going wrong here?

Server :: Booting From USB Flash Disk?

Jan 6, 2011

For various reasons, when I installed our server, I configured it so that it would boot off a USB flash disk. The flash disk mounts as /boot and / mounts on our RAID array.

It all works very well, but I would like to have backup so that if/when the flash disk goes, I can pop in another one.

I have tried to make copies of the flash disk (using both cp and dd), but it doesn't work. When the server starts its bootup sequence, instead of Linux loading, a cursor starts blinking endlessly.

If I put the original flash in, it works fine. If I put the copy in, it doesn't work.

I can't see any difference between the copy and the original. They seem to have the same content. If I do blkid both have the same label and UUID. The label is /boot, and /etc/fstab refers to this

We are running Scientific Linux 5.4.

Server :: OpenSUSE Not Booting Properly

Apr 14, 2010

I am a Java developer for a small company that develops web based solutions to our clients. My Linux skill levels are somewhere between newbie and experienced. The company I'm working for has hosted server that is self managed due to the nature of the software that we develop. The server is located in a data center and the host is fully responsible for maintaining the hardware.Recently the motherboard of the server failed and had to be replaced, this happened promptly, however when the server was booted up I was notified that our Linux is giving problems starting up.I was given access to the server via a Raritan lara (KVM-over-IP).

This enabled me to configure the network again.A few things I've noticed with this however. The old network interface was named eth0 while after the swap the new one is named eth1. There is a failure message for bringing up the NIC named eth0 (old non-existing one).Further after the re-configuring of the NIC (IP, subnet etc) I could connect to the server via SSH, our Apache was running without any visible issues (didn't notice anything in the Apache erroe log). The web frontend on JBoss was running good but I kept getting the failure to start eth0 message on startup. As well through the KVM device you never saw the login prompt, it just hangs on some point (once it was after saying httpd2 started up successfully and another after CRON).I have no idea of where to go look for this issue and I can't even say for sure that it's after the motherboard issue as I could use SSH without a problem after the NIC configuration as I used to connect to the server.I've further looked at dmseg but that also doesn't give any indication for me.

Ubuntu Networking :: Pxe Booting - Server Does Not Respond To Arp

Jan 21, 2010

I am trying to get a server to boot off the lan (pxe). I added a tftp server and tested it as operating successfully. I just plugged the pxe-server in and see the dhcp request/response as expected. The pxe-server then sends out an arp to the same address as the dhcp exchange, but the server never responds.

1. as the pxe-server already has info on the mac/ip-addr, why is it now sending another arp

2. why doesn't the server respond? I have most of my network setup the same way and the dhcp exchange is fine.

3. I'm guessing that the arp is triggered by the bootp exchange (next-server).

I do not have the server in the host table under that address.

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 ubuntu-desktop
192.168.5.101 windows1

Do I need to add 192.168.5.120 with a name to get arp to respond?
