Hardware :: Retrieve Data From Old Wide-plug Hard Drives?

Jul 8, 2011

Is there a way? My computer has a newer, narrow-plug hard-drive. Not Linux specific, I know, but I'm in a bind.

EDIT: Picked up an I/O Magic 2.5 inch IDE/SATA enclosure.

Ubuntu :: Root - Recovering Data From Some Damaged Hard Drives

I am in the process of recovering data from some damaged hard drives.

I am copying the data to a recovery folder on the safe system disk where it is being sorted.

Some of the data/files I do not want to keep.

I want to delete them.

However the permissions are such that it will not let me.

I need to be root.

I don't really want to flaff about in the 1980's geek terminal environment ... just want to right click and select delete.

Is there any way within the GUI to be as one with Root, all powerful, all seeing ......

Software :: Use Fedora To Recover Data On Hard Drives From A WD ShareSpace 4TB NAS?

Jan 5, 2011

My sister-in-law (SIL) has a Western Digital ShareSpace 4TB network access storage that was setup in a RAID 5 configuration (four 1TB hard drives). To make a long story short, a blinking red light on the device and a call to Tier 2 technical support, one of the guys mentioned using Fedora as a way to retrieve the data from the hard drives (seems like the hard drives are good but maybe the actual NAS device crapped out).

I will not have access to the hard drives till this weekend and of course Tier 2 technical support is closed on the weekends. I have almost no Linux knowledge but can follow instructions pretty darn well. I am looking to install Fedora 14 Desktop Edition 64 bit on my desktop sometime tonight or tomorrow. Once I have Fedora installed, how would I mount the hard drives and have Fedora read the RAID 5 array?

Server :: File Server Machine To Store All Data So Being That Have Got Four Identical SATA Hard Drives?

Jan 25, 2011

I've got 4 identical 1 TB drives and would like to use them in a software RAID configuration on my home server. I'm running Debian Linux using 'mdadm' utility to manage the software RAID. I don't know how much I've read is fact or dated or even false so I decided I would ask here to get help from people who know more about this than I do. This is essentially just a file server machine to store all my data so being that I've got four identical SATA hard drives, I was thinking about doing RAID level 5. I guess I'll start here and ask if that is the recommended level of RAID. I think RAID level 5 will be fine for my general server usage. My second issue is partitioning the four individual drives to get maximum performance / space from them. Basically just asking here how would you or you recommend I partition the drives? I was thinking about doing three seperate partitions per drive:

/dev/sda1 = 4 GB (swap)/dev/sda2 = 1 GB (/boot)/dev/sda3 = 995 GB (/)Now from that partition schema above, obviously all the types will be 'fd' for RAID and the partition for /boot is going to be bootable. My confusion is that I read Grub doesn't support booting from RAID 5 since Grub can't handle disk assembly. If /dev/sdx2 (sda2, sdb2, sdc2, sdd2) are partitioned for /boot (bootable), how would you guys configure this RAID to match up equally? I don't think I do a RAID level 1 on 4 identical partitions, right?

Server :: 2 Separate External Hard Drives With ESata To Minimize An Electrical Failure To The Drives?

Mar 26, 2011

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

Ubuntu :: XP Crashed Out And Couldnt Retrieve My Data

I have a laptop that had Windows XP on it - XP crashed out and I couldnt retrieve my data of it, despite booting up in safe mode, it just didnt want to do anything. So i thought i will load ubuntu instead then try and recover my data - bad move. Now my question is, can I still retrieve the windows data of the hard drive despite having Ubuntu installed on the same drive? I know on windows there is an app called File Scavenger that recovers deleted files even after loading a clean slate of Windows on it. Is there something like that for Linux? I had photos on it that has some real sentimental value. The rest of the data I dont care about. Just the photos. I didnt think before I reloaded it.

Ubuntu :: Using Perl Module To Retrieve Data From IPod

Apr 29, 2010

I am trying to make use of the perl module WWW::Nike::NikePlus to retrieve the data from my ipod but apparently I have no idea what I am doing. I installed the package just as the readme said including all the dependencies. I cant really figure out how to run it, i searched for how to use it and found this : Example use that retrieves and prints your last run information

use WWW::Nike::NikePlus;
my $username = 'my@email.address';
my $password = 'MySecretPassword';
my $locale = "en_us";
my $pin = nike_authenticate( $username, $password, $locale );
unless( $pin ) { print "Authentication failed
"; } .....

#Details of the last run
my ($unit, $last_run_dist, $last_run_duration_millisecs,
$last_run_duration_friendly, $last_run_pace_friendly) = nike_last_run();
print "Last run: $last_run_dist$unit in $last_run_duration_friendly
";
print "Last run pace: $last_run_pace_friendly per $unit
";

So I put it in a txt file and saved it with the extension .pl and of course I put in all my info in the username password fields then made it executable with the command sudo chmod +x nikeplus.pl and when I try to run it with either ./ or perl I get this output:

brandon@desktop:~/Apps/nikeplus$ ./nikeplus.pl
./nikeplus.pl: line 1: use: command not found

CentOS 5 :: Sound-juicer Does Not Retrieve Track Data?

I have a fully up-to-dateCentOS 5.6. As of some very recent package update (later than May 12), sound-juicer is unable to retrieve track data for any disc; it just reports "Unknown Title" and "Unknown Artist".

Unfortunately I do not know how to tell which particular package it was, or even how to get a list of recently-updated packages.

Tracks are still extracted fine, it's just the musicbrainz connection which is doa.

I'd be happy to try an alternative program with musicbrainz capability, but couldn't find any. The installed k3b doesn't have any ripping options in the tools menu, where I gather it's supposed to be.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Hard Drives - Creating "alternate" Boot Partitions And "alternate" Root File-systems On The New Drives

Aug 10, 2010

I have a Centos 5.5 system with 2* 250 gig sata physical drives, sda and sdb. Each drive has a linux raid boot partition and a Linux raid LVM partition. Both pairs of partitions are set up with raid 1 mirroring. I want to add more data capacity - and I propose to add a second pair of physical drives - this time 1.5 terabyte drives presumably sdc and sdd. I assume I can just plug in the new hardware - reboot the system and set up the new partitions, raid arrays and LVMs on the live system. My first question:

1) Is there any danger - that adding these drives to arbitrary sata ports on the motherboard will cause the re-enumeration of the "sdx" series in such a way that the system will get confused about where to find the existing raid components and/or the boot or root file-systems? If anyone can point me to a tutorial on how the enumeration of the "sdx" sequence works and how the system finds the raid arrays and root file-system at boot time

2) I intend to use the majority of the new raid array as an LVM "Data Volume" to isolate "data" from "system" files for backup and maintenance purposes. Is there any merit in creating "alternate" boot partitions and "alternate" root file-systems on the new drives so that the system can be backed up there periodically? The intent here is to boot from the newer partition in the event of a corruption or other failure of the current boot or root file-system. If this is a good idea - how would the system know where to find the root file-system if the original one gets corrupted. i.e. At boot time - how does the system know what root file-system to use and where to find it?

3) If I create new LVM /raid partitions on the new drives - should the new LVM be part of the same "volgroup" - or would it be better to make it a separate "volgroup"? What are the issues to consider in making that decision?
