My computer has broken and I cannot login. I don't know what caused it.
I am using Fedora 14 and so it is easy to retrieve my files with the Fedora 14 installation disk under the 'restore' option. I cannot however, work out how to retrieve my MySQL data.
Would anyone be able to shed some light on this matter?
I have mysql downloaded and when I type mysql into the command line I get this:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)
I want to create database from script directly by taking inputs USER, PASSWORD and DBNAME.code...
How to resolve this or any alternate method (other than entering into mysql prompt like mysql -u USER -pPASSWORD)?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 10 on a pc I built from a barebones package, I have had no problems over the past couple months until recently. When I start up the pc the OS lags on a black screen with the cursor blinking. I have searched forums but I guess since I am a newbie I am still lost in the translations. What I am trying to do is save my files that are on the pc to a DVD-RW or my external hard drive before I have to reinstall the software again.
My questions are as follows:
How can I locate the files on the hard drive? When I have the bootable cd-rom inserted I am unable to locate the HDD. How can I transfer my files using the command line prompt? Finally, is it possible just to upgrade to the latest Fedora without losing my files and going through the data recovery process head ache? Or can I reinstall the OS and not lose my files?
I'm trying to backup my old PC games so that I can finally banish their CDs to the attic once and for all. I've just been using the DD command to grab iso's of my games so far, while keeping their keys in a text file (see the DD command below). However, I just hit my C&C collection and I'm having some problems with some of the newer games like Renegade and Yuri's Revenge. I think they must be copy protected or something. 4 of my last discs have stopped copying at exactly 1.7MB (3 seperate DVD drives, 2 IDE, 1 USB enclosed). Can you guys think of anything else that will cause DD to fail at this location? Any ideas? I'd prefer it to be a command line option, as I'm trying to make things go as quickly as possible. View 1 Replies View Relatedwe've been trying to become a bit more serious about backup. It seems the better way to do MySQL backup is to use the binlog. However, that binlog is huge! We seem to produce something like 10Gb per month. I'd like to copy the backup to somewhere off the server as I don't feel like there is much to be gained by just copying it to somewhere else on the server. I recently made a full backup which after compression amounted to 2.5Gb and took me 6.5 hours to copy to my own computer ... So that solution doesn't seem practical for the binlog backup.Should we rent another server somewhere? Is it possible to find a server like that really cheap? Or is there some other solution? What are other people's MySQL backup practices?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was having so much trouble with ubuntu 8.04 that I deleted off my computer and did a fresh install of 9.10. I downloaded the 64 bit iso from the internet, burned it to a disc and installed it. When it asked if it should be the server version I thought I said no. Now when I boot it only boots to the server version and all I get is command line. Can I get out of this and get my regular ubuntu screen back or did I install the wrong version?

So i thought i will load ubuntu instead then try and recover my data - bad move. Now my question is, can I still retrieve the windows data of the hard drive despite having Ubuntu installed on the same drive? I know on windows there is an app called File Scavenger that recovers deleted files even after loading a clean slate of Windows on it. Is there something like that for Linux? I had photos on it that has some real sentimental value. The rest of the data I dont care about. Just the photos. I didnt think before I reloaded it.

Luckily I had done nothing with it ....have just connected the disk to my system I can see everything above(should that be below) home but not anything in his account. View 3 Replies View RelatedMy wifes computer, IBM desktop, running XP, was hit by malware. I managed to save the data and tarred it and copied to a USB memory stick using my Linux box Ubu 9.1). I checked and saw it had been truly saved. Two days later I put stick in USB port and it was not recognized (usually any hot plugable device shows up immediately on desktop). I have tried plugging it into a windows machine and nothing was found. We are both very desperate at this apparent loss but because something similar happened with an Iomega zip disk.

I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
a) do this
b) do that

I think this goes here, but I'm not sure. I decided that XAMPP had been troublesome enough. MySQL never worked. So I decided to instal the LAMP stack offered by YaST. I went about installing it thinking that it would all work. But it seems that I was wrong. So I try to start mysql, and here's what I get:

I am trying to make use of the perl module WWW::Nike::NikePlus to retrieve the data from my ipod but apparently I have no idea what I am doing. I installed the package just as the readme said including all the dependencies. I cant really figure out how to run it, i searched for how to use it and found this : Example use that retrieves and prints your last run information

I am looking for a program to help me store, organise and retrieve information. The aim would be to keep notes from literature, concepts and ideas which i come across during my studies. It's always a hassle to retrieve this information when i have to write a paper for instance. So in fact what i need is a sort of wikipedia-like program where information is searchable and where perhaps hyperlinks could lead me from one word/note to another.
