I have an imac g5 that died on me and as a result I built a new pc and am now using ubuntu 10.4 I believe. I have some photos that I would like to retrieve off the mac drive. I have installed the mac drive in my pc and can view the disk, but I can't seem to get into the iphoto library to get the photos. What do I need to do?

I should have seen this coming when I lost the ability to boot windows, or mount that drive from ubuntu. But now I think my hard drive has failed. Is there any way to retrieve the data from the hard drive, or my settings and the like for ubuntu? I'm at a loss for what to do as i'm booting from a CD right now =X.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Puppy Linux because my Windows OS crashed and I could not find the license number and did not want to pay $180 for a new one.So far This OS looks good but quite different to Windows so I am having difficulty finding how to retrieve my photos and documents from the computer.
I have been able to find the relevant files but I can't see how to copy or print them.
I would like to put them onto CD and transfer them to my laptop which is running Windows 7.
I have one hard drive that is filling up and I went and got another hard drive and installed it into the machine. How do I move files from the full hard drive to the almost empty hard drive. I only have about 400mb left on the full drive. Or should I move the Ubuntu 8.04LTS OS to the new drive?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been working at this for the past 2 days now. My computer got some kind of virus or something that has caused it to loop at startup and continually reset. I run an XP OS on a Gateway. I desperately need to backup my files, because the person who had my backup absently deleted my stuff. I was able to boot up using an Ubuntu disc and I'm in it right now, I've found my files, I have an external hard drive. The problem:First, it wont let me paste into the hard drive. If I drag, it says "Error while copying to "/media/FreeAgent Drive". You do not have permissions to write to this folder." I've mounted the external drive, nothing changes.
I've gone in to properties, is says under permissions that the owner is root, folder access is "Access files" and at the bottom is says "You are not the owner, so you can't change these permissions." The drop downs where I need to change permissions is in gray, so I can;t change it.So next, I tried "gksu nautilus", went to the drive through there, and it let me use the drop down selection under permissions. I tried to change the folder access and I got this message: "The permissions could not be changed. Couldn't change the permissions of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk." So I tried changing the file access to Read and Write. It didn't give an error, so I thought perhaps it finally worked. I hit apply, and tried to put my files in. Once again I got the message from before that said I didn't have permission. I tried to change the owner so it was no longer root and I got "The owner could not be changed. Couldn't change the owner of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk."I'm getting so frustrated right now. These files are VERY important to me! The hard drive I have is a Seagate FreeAgent desk 500GB
What is the recommended way to backup all files to an external hard drive? Should it be done through CLI or should a third party program be used?

However, this process (recoverjpeg) continues to find pictures and dump them into my hard drive. I am fighting an uphill battle. Is there a way to stop a program from running continuously? I removed the package, but it continues to find files on my computer and put them into my hard drive, which is a problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an external harddrive of 500GB. It's almost fully loaded with TV series and movies. Nautilus says there's 60 GB remaining space. I just downloaded some movies, and copied it to this external hard drive.And here's the strange part, after I did this I only see a very small subset of all the movies I stored on that harddrive in nautilus. With 500 GB almost full, you can imagine there are quite some movies on it, but I only see 12 of them in nautilus.

my computer was running Kubuntu 8.10 with a Vista dualboot. I also tried attaching the hard drive to another laptop, but because of the video drivers the display doesn't function properly.
I bought a new 2.5 inch SATA laptop hard drive and mounted it in an external enclosure for use as an external backup drive. I had a whale of a time getting it formatted (ref post), but finally did by putting the bare drive into a laptop and used Ubuntu to partition and format as part of installing. Then I remounted the bare drive back into the enclosure and sure enough now I can now see the drive.
So now I want to erase the files from the backup drive. Problem is, Ubuntu won't let me delete or add any files. In Nautlis, if I select the files and "right click", Move to Trash is grayed out. If I press the delete button, nothing happens. If I try to copy a new file to the backup drive it says "permission denied". If I go into the Properties .> Permissions for the drive everything is grayed out so I can't change the permission. It also says "You are not the owner so you cannot change permissions".
I am running dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7 but have decided to ditch windows and go permanently with Ubuntu. How do I save my data files (email addresses etc.) to an external hard drive for downloading back on to my laptop when I have reformated it.

Anyway, it won't boot and instead takes me to a screen where it says "press s to skip mounting, or press m to recover manually" or something like that. I've pressed S, and then it tells me that it can't find /tmp or something, and I have to turn it off and back on to do anything. Pressing M doesn't help much either... at least not for a mostly-linux-idiot like me. I would do a clean install, but there are a few files I absolutely have to have from the hard drive. recover the files I need from my hard drive to a usb drive while using a Live CD?

Both Mac OSX and Windows 7 automatically see the drive and all the files on it, but unfortunately, I can't get Ubuntu to really see that drive. It sort of shows an icon under network, but if I try to open it, I don't see any files in it.
I have a very unaltered off the shelf installation of Ubuntu 10.10 on a Sony Vaio, some sort of AMD dual core vintage. I never thought that it would be Linux that failed to see the router drive, but unfortunately, that is what has happened.
I haven't run into this with ubuntu before. I am trying to recover some files from a damaged hard drive and when I try to use the no change to computer option I get to a log in screen. But, I don't have a user name or a password at that point.

I was thinking of using cp with the -R and -n options, but I have no idea what devices to refer to. I can't find any external hard drives in /etc/fstab and I'm not sure what /dev device each USB external hard drive uses. I've removed the hard drive and can access most of the files, but she encrypted her home directory with "Filevault" and I think her home directory automatically mounts from some image somewhere. She does remember her password, but I'm not really sure where the encrypted files are on the hard drive and I'm not sure how to unencrypt them.I was thinking of trying to boot the external hard drive in some kind of virtual machine, but I don't know how to do that either.

It recognized my windows partition fine and I was able to get all my files off of that, but the majority of my stuff is on the ext4 partition that I have on it. Does anyone know how to access the ubuntu partition of this hard drive from my mac?
