So WINE did an excellent job at finding my C:, but I also have 3 other drives that are NTFS partition and WINE isn't detecting these drives at all. How do I make WINE detect these drives?
View 1 Repliesi have recently setup and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a virtulal drive usingVMWare 6.04, installed the desktop gui as well, I need to add other drives for data and loggng, which I did in the VMWare side. I can see the 2 drives in ubuntu, but can not access them, I get he unable to mount location when I try. How can resolve this please as I need these to virtual drives to be used as data drives.

Fedora recognizes the other drives but it seems the data on those drives is not there anymore. The below images are screen shots from my computer folder and disk utility program. View 14 Replies View RelatedMy sister-in-law (SIL) has a Western Digital ShareSpace 4TB network access storage that was setup in a RAID 5 configuration (four 1TB hard drives). To make a long story short, a blinking red light on the device and a call to Tier 2 technical support, one of the guys mentioned using Fedora as a way to retrieve the data from the hard drives (seems like the hard drives are good but maybe the actual NAS device crapped out).
I will not have access to the hard drives till this weekend and of course Tier 2 technical support is closed on the weekends. I have almost no Linux knowledge but can follow instructions pretty darn well. I am looking to install Fedora 14 Desktop Edition 64 bit on my desktop sometime tonight or tomorrow. Once I have Fedora installed, how would I mount the hard drives and have Fedora read the RAID 5 array?
I installed 10.10 on my workstation but now my system refuses to mount two existing two data drives that were already there... sudo mount /dev/sdc /mnt/data-b gives me: mount: unknown filesystem type 'isw_raid_member'
I didn't change any BIOS settings... My BIOS is not configured for RAID at all, that setting reads AHCI, which should be okay for my kernel (using the stock 2.6.35-24).
I tried to force mount one of the drives with sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/sdc /mnt/data-b
but this gives me an even stranger message:
"/dev/sdc already mounted or /mnt/data-b busy (neither of them are true...)
It's mainly the "isw_raid_member" thing that troubles me... I didn't and don't have a RAID system at all..
-I upgraded my Ubuntu install and the system boots except it ignores my two data drives. I get a prompt to continue waiting, skip or manually recover. If I skip I boot into Ubuntu. The fstab entries for the data drives are:

I booted with a knoppix cd and both drives are found and contain data. What steps can I take to remount these drives and recover the data?
I'm using windows 7 now and I want to install ubuntu as the main OS to the current C:drive(which has installed windows currently) but with keeping the data in other ntfs drivers(D:, E:, F: ) on my hard disk. I can't take backups of all data in other drivers and if that data erased with ubuntu installation I will face a very big problem in future. So how to install ubuntu 10.10 only for a one drive(c: drive) without erasing the data on other ntfs drivers? and I uses nvidia 8 series graphic card and are there any special things to follow to install it's official linux drivers(.run) or is it enough to use default drivers on ubuntu.

I am copying the data to a recovery folder on the safe system disk where it is being sorted.
Some of the data/files I do not want to keep.
I want to delete them.
However the permissions are such that it will not let me.
I need to be root.
I don't really want to flaff about in the 1980's geek terminal environment ... just want to right click and select delete.
Is there any way within the GUI to be as one with Root, all powerful, all seeing ......
Is there a way? My computer has a newer, narrow-plug hard-drive. Not Linux specific, I know, but I'm in a bind.
EDIT: Picked up an I/O Magic 2.5 inch IDE/SATA enclosure.
I am using software RAID in Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10 to mirror(RAID1) two 1TB harddrives. These are used for data storage and websites.I also have a 80GB harddrive for the operatigsystem. This drive has no backup or RAID at all. Should this drive crash and the system therefore to become no longer bootable, will I be able to recover the data the 1TB drives or should I backup the 80GB drive as well?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 2 external drives that I'm using for movies and they're both formatted to fat32. The problem I'm experiencing now is that some of the high quality mkv files are not able to be moved to the drive because of fat32's limitations.
I'd like to convert to ext3 (or 4) and I wanted to check to see if I can do it without having to reformat and without loss of data.
I suspect this is not new but I just can't find where it was treated. Maybe someone can give me a good lead.I just want to prevent certain users from accessing CD/DVD drives and all external drives. They should be able to mount their home directories and move around within the OS but they shouldn't be able to move data away from the PC. Any Clues?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to fedora and installed wine to see if I could get the sony reader software working (required to access sony bookstore from my sony ereader). Well the program did not work though it did create icons on my desktop. wine kept crashing and I said lets just get rid of it. I uninstalled wine via yum remove and nothing appeared to happen so I did rpm -qa |grep wine and saw lots of stuff. So I simply did yum remove wine* and then a rpm -qa |grep wine was empty. however wine is still under applications on my desktop and still has a category for programs--reader. I should also mention that while wine was installed I attempted to remove the reader via the wine uninstalller but a) wine gave a message of a core crash and b) all the uninstaller did was give me the option to reinstall the reader program. so now when I attempt to open an epub it tries with the sony reader software. I know I can just right click to use another program but for now I want wine gone completely from my pc and the sony program gone.

Due to this we have lost all of the data. We can successfully install Windows Server 2008 or 2003 or Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 on this server with no error no issue.we can successfully install Windows Server 2008, 2003 or RedHat Enterprise on RAID 5 or RAID 6 Or RAID 1 or RAID 1+0. we dont face any issue on these windows or linux platforms.We are only facing RAID Controller Issue on CentOS 5
I have Fedora 14 installed on my main internal drive. Whole process has gone very smoothly, but left with a small problem (i.e. it isn't actually affecting usability) that I don't seem to be able to fix and can't find on forums/internet. I also have a problem with the Floppy drive, but I've seen that problem elsewhere in the forums.
It's a dual boot system with both NTFS and Ext4 drives. All are visible and fully accessible. I decided to convert one of the NTFS drive to Ext4. That appeared to be successful and was successfully remounted as an Ext4 drive. The drive label is "Data". I did have a bit of a problem getting it remounted so that I could see/use it under my log-in as opposed to just under root. It's at this point I think that I did something to create the problem.
I now have two entries for "Data" in drop down menu for Places. The true one is shown as a standard hard drive icon, but the false one is shown as a different icon - possibly an external drive icon (note that the floppy drive is also showing as the same icon and I can't access that, but I've seen that's a problem elsewhere in the forums).
I can write and read to the true "Data" hard drive. If I click on the other false "Data" icon, I get the message "mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or /media/Data busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdd1 is already mounted on /media/Data". If unmount the true drive and try to mount the false drive, the system mounts the true drive instead. If I log into nautilus as root, neither the false data drive or the floppy appear in the left hand panel.
I've got 4 identical 1 TB drives and would like to use them in a software RAID configuration on my home server. I'm running Debian Linux using 'mdadm' utility to manage the software RAID. I don't know how much I've read is fact or dated or even false so I decided I would ask here to get help from people who know more about this than I do. This is essentially just a file server machine to store all my data so being that I've got four identical SATA hard drives, I was thinking about doing RAID level 5. I guess I'll start here and ask if that is the recommended level of RAID. I think RAID level 5 will be fine for my general server usage. My second issue is partitioning the four individual drives to get maximum performance / space from them. Basically just asking here how would you or you recommend I partition the drives? I was thinking about doing three seperate partitions per drive:
/dev/sda1 = 4 GB (swap)/dev/sda2 = 1 GB (/boot)/dev/sda3 = 995 GB (/)Now from that partition schema above, obviously all the types will be 'fd' for RAID and the partition for /boot is going to be bootable. My confusion is that I read Grub doesn't support booting from RAID 5 since Grub can't handle disk assembly. If /dev/sdx2 (sda2, sdb2, sdc2, sdd2) are partitioned for /boot (bootable), how would you guys configure this RAID to match up equally? I don't think I do a RAID level 1 on 4 identical partitions, right?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.
so I setup a raid ten system and I was wondering what that difference between the active and spare drives is ? if I have 4 active drives then 2 the two stripes are then mirrored right?

while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. How can I uninstall / purge wine and any wine installed windows programs?I've tried deleting .wine (hidden folder)but in /usr/bin/ there are a number of wine related files.And wine sub menu still appears in Applications menu

This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data
