Debian :: How To Change Permissions On Exfat Removable Media
Jul 20, 2015I'm going traveling and I had the bright idea of putting my sensitive and irreplaceable files on an sd card. Then if I leave my stuff in a sketchy hostel for the day, I can easily take the card and might lose only a replaceable netbook. The problem is that I want some files to have 600 permissions (rw-------), readable and writable only by owner.
But no power on earth seems to be able to force a fuse-ified filesystem to pay attention. Whether I try "chmod 600 filename.txt" as the owner/user or as sudo makes no difference. Nothing works. The sd card is mounted with a line in /etc/fstab:
Code: Select allUUID=0000-0000 /mnt/64_GB_sdxc exfat auto,rw,user,exec,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0022,flush,fmask=133 0 0
So the user owns the files and they have typical permissions instead of the automounted default of 700. That's all very nice, but I'd like to be able to change permissions on just a few files!
Debian :: EXFAT Support Vs NTFS Support ?
Aug 25, 2010I'm looking to dual-boot Windows 7 and Debian 6 upon its release on my sister's laptop. I want to share a partition between the two of them so that /home points to this directory and the Windows equivalent also points to it (C:Users).
Anyway, I've heard good and bad things about the NTFSMount driver (I think it's NTFS-3G now) and the NTFSprogs project and so I am not so certain what I should believe. I do know that NTFS has relatively high overhead, though I do not recall the source of this assertion, so I am considering the use of EXFAT. An open source EXFAT project is hosted on Google Code at [url] and it utilizes the kernel module FUSE.
I'm quite certain that I've got everything covered on the Windows side -- that is, I know that both NTFS and EXFAT will be suitable filesystems for my required usage.
My issue is that I'm curious which will have superior performance and stability in Debian. I planned on building the package from source and mounting the device in my FSTAB but I have also found a PPA for Ubuntu on Launchpad at [url] that I could borrow the debian/rules from and make a .deb package from.
What do you guys think? Should I go at it with the EXFAT or NTFS partitioning? Is NTFS-3G actually fairly supported at this point? Or perhaps should I consider some alternate method?
I have also considered that the only files she will be sharing are those of music, videos, and pictures so it could be better to just link /home/xxxx/Pictures (Music and Videos, too) to the new partition instead of all of /home.

Mar 22, 2010I have a 120 gig drive that I'd like to clone before it fails completely. I was thinking I'd pull the drive from the server and build a separate machine that has it's own os installed and the source and destination drive. Does anyone know of any linux tools will will do a full drive copy? Additionally, If possible, I'd like to move to a larger drive. how I'd migrate the 120 drive to a 400 or so? 1 idea I have is to install os on 2 new drives to where it they will boot, Then boot with one and copy source to the newly created destination drive.

Apr 15, 2011I need to re-format an external drive. All the instructions I have found start with figuring out where the drive is mounted (sda, hda, etc.). However, as soon as my RH Linux machine sees the drive's format (ntfs) it decides it won't even mount it in the first place. Gives me an error message. Also, the drive doesn't show up at all via "df -k". how to convince RHL to be a little more accepting?

Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place.What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.
Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.

If I am sitting in front of the physical machine, I have no problems at all. I would like VNC to behave more like I am sitting in front of the computer. Is there a way to do this? Aug 3, 2009Background is this: Laptop has an internal h/d (obviously) so I removed it from laptop. Then set Bios to boot from external h/d. Installed Fedora 11 on ext. h/d no swap partition as drive already has 4 partitions. Fedora ran lovely!! I then replaced internal hard drive but left bios to boot from external hard drive. Boot screen for fedora came up, hit enter and fedora started loading. The little balloon started filling up, got to a quarter full and then screen went black. Had to reboot to get going again,same thing happened. Can anybody tell me what may be causing it,i.e. black screen. Fedora boots up and runs lovely with internal h/d removed. Any help very gratefully received. M/c has intel dual core processor, 3 gig of ram.

Sep 2, 2009I'm installing FC 11 via Live CD and it does not detect the drive...? However I can create and delete partitions with fdisk without problem...? The BIOS detects the drive without problem.

Nov 30, 2009until recently, my CD/DVD-RW drive(from TsstCorp) on my Hp 530 lappy used work fine. But now, (I dunno why,), the drive is not showing up ANYWHERE... not even in boot menu... The power supply is fine as i can open the drive and can also hear the typical Cd-dvd drive noises after inserting a disc...I am totally lost now and would really appreciate ANY help... again,... the drive is not showing up ANYWHERE... not in any file manager.

Aug 8, 2010I just bought a Magellan Triton 400 and installed just about every program with "gps" in the name. When I plug it in and choose "Connect to PC" it stops at the "Waiting to connect" screen. The installed gps programs each reports that no drive is connected. This is my first experience with gps and I'm really perplexed. There are guides to setting up gps with bluetooth, but this is a USB connection.

Apr 9, 2010I'm running fedora 8 on a mobo with 1 ide controller and 6 sata ports. I use this computer as a samba file server essentially with only a power cable and network cable on the back of it (i.e. pure text terminal install ). I have 2 ide drives and 3 sata drives. No raid configuration, JBOD. This setup is working with devices /dev/sda -> /dev/sde.
When I add an additional sata drive instead of the system booting up and me having a /dev/sdf available to partition and mount. I get a [FAILED] I believe at the "Checking filesystems" point. Basically it seems that which ever port I plug the sata drive into, it conflicts with the port beside it. Thus if in the first port available it will say "No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdc1". If I move it to the next one it says the same thing but with value /dev/sdd1.
The bios will show the new hard drive. Hopefully this is enough information. I figure it could be any number of things but probably obvious for you linux gurus.
