Red Hat / Fedora :: Reformatting External Drive - Error "drive Doesn't Show Up At All Via Df -k"

Apr 15, 2011

I need to re-format an external drive. All the instructions I have found start with figuring out where the drive is mounted (sda, hda, etc.). However, as soon as my RH Linux machine sees the drive's format (ntfs) it decides it won't even mount it in the first place. Gives me an error message. Also, the drive doesn't show up at all via "df -k". how to convince RHL to be a little more accepting?

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drive - GParted Wont Load Up When Plugged In And Disk Utility Doesn't Show It

Feb 7, 2011

I had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.

Fedora Hardware :: External Drive Permissions - Error While Copying

Aug 7, 2011

I've got two external drives that are using ext4 that for whatever reason, I just can't seem to write too. I've changed the permissions on the drives using chmod so the permissions are "drwxrwxrwx". I can even right click within the drive and click "Create New Folder" but then it tells me, "Error while copying to "sdc1". The destination is read-only." I thought the destination permissions were setup so anyone can read/write to the disk? I haven't been using linux that long and have only recently started to feel comfortable to move over all of my stuff to Fedora.

Ubuntu :: Seeing Folders - Plug In The External Drive And Get Error "format The Drive"

May 30, 2010

I'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...

I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.

I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.

Ubuntu :: Repairing / Reformatting USB Drive - Can't Save Files

Jun 3, 2011

I'm having difficulty repairing/reformatting a USB drive. I've yet to explore and get me on the right track. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. I have a generic USB drive, 4GB, currently formatted FAT. I can't save files to it, can't format it using Ubuntu's Disk Utility. Attempts to format using Disk Utility return the following error:

Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sdb: Input/output error Yesterday I got fed up and tried to just zero the thing out using a dd command... ran it in verbose, the right stuff returned to screen, still no dice. I can't get it to a point where I can format it either using Disk Utility or mkfs.

Hardware :: SATA Drive In USB JBOD Enclosure Doesn't Show Up In /dev?

Jan 12, 2011

I put together a NAS-like device using a 2-slot USB JBOD enclosure and an eBox-3300. I'm using Ubuntu Server 8.04 Hardy as an OS for the eBox. I have two WD EARS drives hat I intend to use in the USB enclosure, one 1TB large, the other 2TB. I managed to install Hardy on the 1TB drive and boot from it. The 2TB drive is preformatted XFS. If I add the 2TB drive in the enclosure, it does not show up in /dev in ubuntu. In the device's BIOS, both drives appear just fine with correct IDs, so I'm guessing the problem is with ubuntu.

P.S. dmesg report regarding usb:

General :: Doesn't Detect External USB Hard Drive

Aug 4, 2010

In Ubuntu 10.04 all I had to do was turn on my external hard drive and it would automatically be detected and mounted. I just switched over to Ultimate Edition, which I think is Ubuntu 10.04 with a lot of stuff added on to it. The funny thing is when I turn on the external hard drive it doesn't get mounted, and I don't think it's even being detected. I looked in gparted and it doesn't show up there. If I boot into Ubuntu 10.04 and turn on the hard drive it still gets detected and mounted, so there's nothing wrong with it. Ultimate Edition can detect other things connected to USB, like my iPod, so I'm wondering why it can't detect my hard drive.

Edit: When I do tail -f /var/log/messages and if the drive gets detected, this is what it says:

[ 230.520892] usb 1-2.4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
[ 230.639400] usb 1-2.4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mount External Drive - 11.0 Doesn't Seem To Work

Aug 31, 2010

I have a hard time mounting two external drives on my Suse 11.3. When I use the device notifier gadget both drives get mounted in /media/<drive name>, the vfat drive is read-only though. However, I would like to mount both drives under /<drive name> in separate directories and rw. I looked at the devices in /dev/ and entered the device name to fstab, set the mount point, file system (vfat, and ntfs-3g) and set 'rw,noauto, exec, user, sync 0 0'.

This way I could mount my vfat drive read-only under /<drive name>, but not the ntfs one. After a reboot i noticed that the external drives get different IDs in /dev. E.g. what I had in my fstab under /dev/sdc1 got /dev/sdf1, and /dev/sdc was unknown. I am doing something wrong here, what worked in 11.0 does not seem to work here.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 On External Hard Drive Drive?

Jun 19, 2011

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.

Slackware :: External USB Hard Drive Auto-mounting Error

Nov 29, 2009

Just installed Slackware 13 this morning. It's been a long time since I last tried Linux, but Slack works (a lot easier than Slack 8 did back when I last used it!) quite well. I'm using the XFCE desktop and it's smooth as silk except for one odd problem-I cannot get any of my USB drives to mount. I just plugged in my Lexar 4GB USB flash drive and received an error message. Here's from /var/log/messages from when I initally plugged in the drive (I have a 500GB WD MyBook USB external drive that is always plugged in):

Any ideas or suggestions of what to look at? I'm not familiar with HAL in Linux although I've seen plenty of discussion about it and have an idea of what it's supposed to (or break! ).
