I have a PPD file supplied by the printer manufacturer and thought that all I needed to do was put this in /etc/cups/ppd When I go to System Settings > Printers and add Network printer the machine is found but when I click on 'Add' nothing appears in the left hand side. Cups is installed and another HP printer is working ok. Have I missed something?

I'm trying to install a Konica-Minolta M5670en printer. The printer is not found in the standard list so I got the ppd file(s) from Konica. There are two potential files: M5670opn.ppd and M5670PX.PPD. As downloaded, they are packaged as either a zip file or as a directory with the zip files unzipped.
Don't, laugh! This is the first time I've had to deal with a printer not already in the database. Which files do I need to use and where the heck do I copy them? When I run Yast printer->add the printer is found on the network and I try to specify the driver - but does it need the .zip file, the expanded directory, or what? So far, I'm not having much luck pointing to the downloaded files - either the zipped or unzipped versions. Yast copies the selected file to /usr/cups/model/download but then complains about file content and dies!

My purpose is to be able to use Canon printers with my debian jessie system (installed via netinst iso).
I have read this wiki page but unfortunately it is a little old. I still have followed/adapted the instructions there but it fails on my system on step 6. I will explain below.
Latest Canon drivers in the official website is v3.10. US version of it can be obtained from here.
When I try to install .deb package in the driver file archive I get following output:

I've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

We are set up with network printers here (all Windows), and I was wondering how to go about being able to print to one of the network printers from my Linux desktop. Can I even connect to the Windows network with this desktop (it is hooked up)? Understand, I do NOT want to screw up anything on the network - they won't let me play anymore if I do. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using an up-to-date installation of Squeeze with the default Gnome desktop and am trying to print. My knowledge of configuring printers is very limited if it even exists. Since a friend of mine is able to print from her Ubuntu computer, my plan is to copy her. Here's how she does it. She goes under System->Administration->Printing on the desktop. Then a window pops up titled "Printing" that lists various printers that are supposed to exist. It's possible to add one by selecting Add->Printer. It asks for the root password and then a new window pops up titled "New Printer" which has a subwindow called "Select Device" In my case, the "Select Device" window has the following options to choose from:
- AppSocket/HP JetDirect
- Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
- LPD/LPR Host or Printer
In her case, she has an extra option called "Windows Printer via Samba". This is the option that she uses. The other options don't seem to work for her. I'm assuming that I just need to install some package in order to make this option magically pop up for me. Does anyone know what package this may be? I currently have the packages smbclient, samba-common and samba-common-bin installed..........
I have a canon printer which was working so far. After my latest upgrade its giving errors saying "Printer not connected -- Check your connection" Fortunately I had a backup of my root before the upgrade and one difference I see is that on the new system theres no /dev/usb/lp0 which there is on the old one. So how do I make it? Or should I use the /dev/lp0? Note they are different:

I have ununtu 9.04 running on my desktop this question regards printing. I first installed my Hp laserjet p 1006 printer it worked great. Next I installed hp laser jet 2500 l that works great now if I go to use my hp p1006 it does print at all it says it is but nothing happens, the other HP printer works great.

I was trying to install a driver for an HP All-in-One Printer and was trying all kinds of commands from different Google searches... still unsuccessful in the installation. I downloaded the file to my desktop, but after using a Chmod command someone mentioned, I now have a folder on my desktop named:

"You are not the owner so you cannot change these permissions". The folder's icon on my desktop has a red box with white circle on the middle right side and a lock symbol above that. I'm the only user so I don't get why the permissions are protected from me, how do i undo this?
I'm reasonably new to Linux and very new to Ubuntu . I've just installed 9.10 as a dual boot on a Windows XP Pro Dell Inspiron 9200. I have a Samsung CLP-315 that I need to configure first as a local printer then as a wireless network printer. I found the software (.bin file) on the Samsung site and downloaded it but that's as far as I got. Can I use any of the GUI package managers or do I need to use Terminal and command line syntax? Here's the real question "what is the syntax for installing software/drivers?"

Ive found the drivers for my printer (Cannon MP 210) but i have no idea what to do with the files. The file for the scanner is a .tgz file, and the printer driver is a .tar file.
