I wanted some input on chronic problems with Ubuntu:
1. Why does wireless almost never work right on Ubuntu?
2. Why, when Ubuntu just decides to turn off my wireless card, can I not just turn it back on?
3. Why do tar balls almost never unpack right?
4. Why are printer drivers so buggy?
5. Why do my MP3 players and digital cameras not work with Ubuntu?
I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.

I have a Canon PIXMA MP628 printer connected to my home network, wirelessly. PReviously, when I was running windows, I am able to print wirelessly.
My printer is connected to my router and has a static IP address of 192.168.0.199
Therefore, how can I make my printer to work in Ubuntu now, since Canon doesn't have any Linux drivers. Am I able to add printer from Ubuntu Printing Service menu? What are the options that I should select?

I'm such a newbie when it comes to Ubuntu, or any Linux varient, period. I was trying to install a driver for an HP All-in-One Printer and was trying all kinds of commands from different Google searches... still unsuccessful in the installation. I downloaded the file to my desktop, but after using a Chmod command someone mentioned, I now have a folder on my desktop named:
hplip-3.9.12
i right-click
select
properties
Basic Tab
Type:folder (inode/directory
Contents:unreadable
Location:/home/mesk/Desktop
Permissions Tab
Owner:root
Group:root
"You are not the owner so you cannot change these permissions". The folder's icon on my desktop has a red box with white circle on the middle right side and a lock symbol above that. I'm the only user so I don't get why the permissions are protected from me, how do i undo this?

I'm reasonably new to Linux and very new to Ubuntu . I've just installed 9.10 as a dual boot on a Windows XP Pro Dell Inspiron 9200. I have a Samsung CLP-315 that I need to configure first as a local printer then as a wireless network printer. I found the software (.bin file) on the Samsung site and downloaded it but that's as far as I got. Can I use any of the GUI package managers or do I need to use Terminal and command line syntax? Here's the real question "what is the syntax for installing software/drivers?"

Since my windows HDD died, I have been permanently on ubuntu but i never got my printer set up. Its a friday night and now ive got some time on my hands! Ive found the drivers for my printer (Cannon MP 210) but i have no idea what to do with the files. The file for the scanner is a .tgz file, and the printer driver is a .tar file. When i connected my printer a few minutes ago, ubuntu 10.10 brought me to the installation and i installed and older printers driver (mp 180) but the scanner wont work and a bit of excess ink is on the test paper.

I'm a very inexperienced Linux user, just getting started, so bear with me. I was able install the printer drivers for a Brother network laser printer (HL-5370DW) and would like to install the drivers on a few other computers on my small home network. Is there a way to automate this process by pushing them out to the other computers, or should I just manually install them? It wasn't difficult, just wondering if there is a slick way to do this.

My printer is connected to another PC. If I run Windoze I can do a network connect, but with Linux, even though I've set up the samba connection I can't print. If I send a print job I can hear the printer "getting the info", but then it just hangs. Having to load the print job onto a thumb drive, shoving the drive into the host PC, etc. is not what a PC geek wants to do.

I've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

I bought a new Samsung ML-2851ND. I intend to connect it via the ethernet port is has. Under Ubuntu you cannot just plug and play. To set it up you need to connect it via a USB cable (Ubuntu will have all the needed drivers to operate as soon as you plug it in). Then you can go into the advanced settings for the printer and set up the network settings with the right gateway, subnet and IP address. Once you do this you can http into the address and play with all the other settings. Please note that Samsung have fantastic Linux support and you can download the driver etc here: [URL]
All options are supported (1200dpi, duplex, toner save etc). Kudos to Samsung for making a Linux friendly product. This is the second Samsung I have and I bought it because the first worked so well with Linux. If I need to buy another Samsung are my first preference.

I am running Lucid 64bit on my laptop and been trying to install a canon printer driver LBP3200 on it. There are some comprehensive tutorials that I have been following and they worked on my desktop. However the last thing I have to do is
Code:
sudo update-rc.d ccpd defaults 50
which gives me the error
Code:
update-rc.d: warning: /etc/init.d/ccpd missing LSB information
update-rc.d: see [URL]
System start/stop links for /etc/init.d/ccpd already exist.
I checked in /etc and I do not have the rc.d dir! I have rc0.d through to rc6.d and rcS.d dir, but no rc.d one. Is this normal? and if so how can I get the correct file to start/stop the ccpd daemon for the printer? At the moment the print command brings up the printer icon for about ten seconds and then it disappears and nothing happens.

I was curious as to if there was a way to install a 32bit driver on a 64bit system. I have a dell v515w printer and the only driver they provide for it is a 32bit driver. I was wandering if anyone may know of a way to install it or if anyone knows of any other available drivers. I have searched everywhere for i dont know how long and came up with nothing i have tried installing the 32bit libraries and it didnt help.. and going back a 32bit system is out of the question due to ubuntu not wanting to load.. i think it has something to due with my hard drive being to large... but im using ubuntu 10.10 maverick 64bit...

I have tried all the usual stuff like: apt-get cups-pdf and similar things.
Of course I use the proper way (like sudo, etc.) The point is I can't print PDF files. Have a look at the image:
<snip>
I have also modified to the cups-pdf.conf file and have directed it to /home/{USER}/PDF And yes the aforementioned folder (i.e. PDF) exists at its proper place.
So I think the main problem is "P2POutputStream" error which you can see in the image.

I have a PPD file supplied by the printer manufacturer and thought that all I needed to do was put this in /etc/cups/ppd When I go to System Settings > Printers and add Network printer the machine is found but when I click on 'Add' nothing appears in the left hand side. Cups is installed and another HP printer is working ok. Have I missed something?
