Hardware :: HP LaserJet 1005 Doesn't Print Anymore
Aug 18, 2010
Unfortunately my usb HP LaserJet 1005 printer stopped working since 16th august. It is running under CUPS 1.3.8, with foo2zjs driver (the only one that supports laserjet 1005). I'm not sure, but this is probably related to the updates I've done recently (I don't exactly remember when I did it, but I think it was before the 16th). Here's what I've done:
Code:
# aptitude update
# aptitude dist-upgrade
As this is a home box, I haven't done that for some months, so a lot of stuff has been updated. I'm afraid some CUPS library has been updated and is now bugged, because it always worked without any problem. My question is whether or not there are known bugs on last CUPS version with hp laserjet and if there's any solution to work it out. I already tried to reinstall the printer, reboot the box, plug it to other USB port, reboot the printer, set it as default printer, and many more things. Google search didn't turn up nothing useful. The problem is not on the printer because I plugged it to my windows pc and it worked like a charm, so I'm pretty sure some stupid configuration or bug is messing arround with my printer

I have tried to download the latest version of CUPS but do not know how to install it properly using command line commands above 'sudo' and 'sh', and I have tried to install HPLIP but it needs 'cups-devel' installed apparently. My Debian can see the 1020 clearly enough to identify it and give its status as idle, via the CUPS interface. When I try and print a Test page it goes to the spooler, says it is printing OK, but nothing prints. The job then disappears and appears on CUPS as completed. In the old days we would have sent a eof() to make the printer work. Have I got a bug in my HP Laserjet 1020 driver? Or am I missing the great plug-in that is not on the Synaptic Package Manager The SPM says I have HPLIP installed.

I am using Opensuse 11.2 on my work machine and am generally quite happy with it. When I plugged the HP Laserjet 1020 into the USB port after installing Opensuse a few months ago, it recognized it immediately and installed the recommended driver. Everything worked fine and I could use it for quite a while.
Now, however, although I do not remember changing anything, the printer is causing trouble. After I couldn't print at all, I removed the driver and tried to install it again. Despite the printer correctly showing up with "lsusb", the printer configuration in YAST does not see any printers at all anymore. And, more strangely, when I plug in the printer cable first and the (USB-) mouse cable second, the mouse does not turn on anymore (no cursor movement, no light in the mouse). The same happens when I boot the computer with the printer cable in the USB port.

I have a hp p1102w laserjet printer that works in windows. However after connecting it through Suse Linux 11.2 it is recognized and the printer name is showing but there is no driver for the printer. This is a usb connection. I have an 1100a laserjet connected that works but it is a parallel port.
Any suggestions? I haven't been able to find any special drivers on the web.

I'm having trouble getting this printer to print. It'll scan fine, but it won't print. I keep getting the following error:
the printer's state message is: '/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed'
I have searched and searched and tried numerous things, but I just can't get it to print. (I tried to post the debugging output here, but the forum kept wiping out my post).

I've been banging my head for two days now trying to get my HP Laserjet 1020 to work. I've gotten the drivers working on the box itself (Opensuse 11.3 x64), but I couldn't get it to print from my laptop (Ubuntu Lucid). Ideally, I'd like to end up with a functional printer which can be used either from the desktop machine (Opensuse) or from the laptop (Ubuntu) through NFS.
After so many attempts at fixing it, I've not made it such that I can't print at all, from either system. I'm considering re-installing Opensuse (or just going back to Kubuntu, which recognizes the printer without a hitch). But before I do so, I figured I'd ask here.
Here are my issues, and attempts at solution:
1) I tried adding the printer both through CUPS, through YAST and through hp-setup, using the hpijs driver. Each time the printer is recognized, but a test page won't print.
2) I tried building the foo2zjs driver, as outlined here: HowTo Install a HP LaserJet 1020 printer in Suse 10.x, 11.x It came up with dependency problems repeatedly on the last step (sudo make install-hotplug) . I gave up when it told me that it was conflicting with an installed package (system-config-printer-udev) which was not installed.
3) Perhaps related problem: on the CUPS web interface, I get a "forbidden" message when I try to change the options on the CUPS server to allow remote access.
Note that:
a) I've already added myself to the lp group.
b) I changed the permissions (+rx) on the /dev/lp0 to allow myself access
c) I'm able to get to the CUPS page on the client machine, so the port 631 (I think) must be open. I say "I think," because there's no option to allow CUPS in YAST firewall settings, for some reason.
I've been following guides here and there, but I'm afraid that I've borked my cupsd.conf file through all the edits. Here it is:

My LaserJet is connected to an old desktop machine that has it shared. The configuration on that desktop is correct, since I have been printing through it from other Windows machines for a long time (and it still works now).
I recently started dual-booting Ubuntu 10.10 on my otherwise Windows laptop, and I've gotten everything basically working how I like it, except that I can't get connected to that printer.
The Vista machine is at IP address 192.168.0.103, and the printer is shared as LaserJet. It's set up with workgroup MSHOME.
When I go to add a printer in Ubuntu, I click the Browse button under "SMB Printer," and I see the MSHOME workgroup, but when I try to expand it, there's nothing inside.
If I try to type in the address directly (smb://192.168.0.103/LaserJet), the Verify button tells me "Print Share Inaccessible, Connection timed out." Note that I can ping 192.168.0.103 fine. I can continue through the rest of the wizard, but I obviously can't print anything out after I finish the setup, since the connection is failing for some reason.
There is no username or password required to see the shared printer.
Any idea what could be going on here? I'm kind of at wit's end here, and I'd love to be able to ditch Windows--with the obvious exception of Starcraft II, of course

I'm running Kubuntu 11.04 and LibreOffice Writer 3.3.2. I'm trying to print a #10 envelope on an HP LaserJet 5M printer. When I create the envelope and attempt to print it, LIbreOffice sets the paper size to #10 Envelope, as it should. I put the envelope into the manual feed tray and initiate the actual printing operation. The printer goes through the motions of processing the output -- and then goes back to the READY state without printing anything. I've tried using all possible Paper Tray settings and also using the CUPS drivers rather than the Foomatic drivers. None of that makes a difference. What does make a difference is setting the paper size to Letter, but then, of course, the information prints in the wrong place on the page.

I am trying to print a schematic from KPDF (Suse 11.2) onto an 11x17 sheet of paper. Regardless of the printer settings I use or which driver I choose it won't rotate the image and fill the page. I have the same problem with kiCAD. If I use Okular it prints part of the drawing in one corner at the 8.5x11 scale.

I have a Windows print server (Win XP SP2) and a 1 opensuse client. I have setup cups as per the following document:
Printer Sharing: Windows Print Server for Suse/openSUSE Linux Clients [Samba and LPD]
I am not using Samba. The setup went fine, but I am not able to print to it. There are other clients (all Windows) that are printing fine to this print server. The following is what I see in the /var/log/cups/error_log:
[Job 3] recoverable: Unable to connect to printer; will retry in 30 seconds...
I am using DHCP in this LAN. Ping is working fine (client's hosts file updated with the print server's ip address.). This looks like a networking issue.

I initially had a problem accessing the CUPS interface (see my other post) and got that resolved by adding the user "cupsys". Now, everything "looks" ok, and when I print a test page, it shows it as completed (in CUPS). However, the page never prints.
The printer is a Canon MP600 (using the canonmp600en.ppd file to configure it). Here's the output of my conf file.
Code:
# Show troubleshooting information in error_log.

Is anyone else having problems with HP LaserJets and Ubuntu 10.04? I have a HP LaserJet 3015 and am running a dual boot with Windows 7.
Printer is automatically detected and works fine on: Windows 7, Windows XP, LinuxMint, and older versions of Ubuntu.
But when I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, when I try to print it just adds the job to the print queue and it never prints. After awhile I get a message saying that Ubuntu is unable to communicate with my printer. (or something to that effect). I can't even print a test page.
I have tried installing HPLIP following the directions given, but get the same behavior (can't communicate with the printer). I have tried unplugging the power cord and usb cable and plugging them back in (as per the directions I am following). But still not communicating.

I want to cram as much speed as possible from my EEEPC 1005 from the current scenario
-mostly web apps through Chrome/FF
-desktop apps used mainly terminal, VLC, remote desktop => don't want fany interface, just fast and lightweight
-my home folder only 2gb => don't really need the hard drive
-I want fast boot time!
I really don't want to mess with my hardware and replace the hard drive with SSD. But I could run linux from USB memory (they're said to run faster than the casual SD memory cards). So my questions to you are
-which USB memory, what speed is minimum?
-is Ubuntu maybe overkill, should I go for the smaller distros? Most importantly - will I gain any speed from that???

I have little problem with NetworkManager. This problem begin when I upgraded Debian Etch to Lenny.
When I right-clicked nm-applet in Debian Etch, I get this dropdown menu where was button "Edit Connections..."
Now in Lenny there is only "Edit Wireless Connections" button. So I can't edit my wired connections anymore.
I know I can just edit /etc/network/interfaces file to set my IP, but I need about 20 different IP:s at work, so that is just stupid do it that way...

I tried to install Ubuntu on a USB HDD on my Macbok Pro 5.3. Everything seemed to be fine, but while rebooting the computer, OSX doesn't start anymore. So, I would say I erased the boot sector of the internal HDD or something similar but I'm not an expert. My internal HDD seems to be fine: One 200 MB FAT32 partiton partition labeled EFI and with the boot flag, One HFS+ partition for the system. I tried to boot with the Snow Leopard DVD and run the Disk Utility to make a "repair". The repair was fine, but the Mac still doesn't boot anymore. (Forget Ubuntu, it's only OSX related, I'll try again Ubuntu only when I'll be able to boot OSX again).

I'm using Karmic since November and standby/sleep has always worked fine. Some weeks ago, it stopped working fine.
After a reboot, I can put the system in standby only once. If I try standby after that, the system seems to do a normal standby, but it resumes at the moment the fans would normally stop working.
I tried different things like the s2ram program, pmi action sleep, etc. I went to the BIOS and tried a number of things, one was succesfull: disable USB. When USB is disabled I can go into standby every time. When I enable USB again (even with no devices connected), standby only works once again.
So, how can I disable USB at the moment I go into standby?

I have dual boot Windows XP pro SP3 / Ubuntu 9.04 and I only use the Windows to download torrents because the download speed on Ubuntu is terrible...
But by accident I pressed the power button when I was downloading in Windows and since then Windows won't boot anymore. Is this a Windows problem or is it maybe that it srewed up my grub? Because I can still select Windows in the grub menu but it stops at "Starting up".

If i use my Ubuntu some times per week, there isn't any problem. But if i don't use it for a short time (a week), when i want use it again and select it on GRUB.. after the first loading screen (on Ubuntu 10.04 the purple screen with Ubuntu in white and some points under), my screen is black. The computer screen is receiving signal because the led is green and not brown/orange like when is on standby mode. On Windows i haven't any problem.
First time it happened with Ubuntu 9.10. I didn't got solution for it and i format the partition and install the 10.04. But now it happen again with 10.04. I have an ATI 5770 and i have tried drivers since 9.12 till 10.4 (last ones the best i have had) On versions before 9.10 i had no problem, but i can't confirm that, because i had other graphic card (NVIDIA 9800GT). But the 5770 didn't work well on previous version so i updated to 9.10 and after this problem, updated to 10.04.
At spanish forum, people don't know solution for this problem, they never read about a similar problem. I hope you know a solution for it, because the only one i found and work is.. format and reinstall.

Since yesterday, Ubuntu boots into X-Windows. The violett background is there and also the mouse cursor. However, there is no login window, anymore. There is no possibility to login.I already tried something, but so far I was not succesful. I reinstalled plymouth, ureadahead and gdm. There could be a reason why my system does not work anymore. Yesterday, my root directory filled up to only 50MB free space. Now there is again 5GB.

how to get linux onto an old laptop (dell inspiron 2600, 1GHZ, 120MB RAM). the cd drive doesn't recognize CD's anymore and in boot menu, "Setup Utility" the usb drives aren't recognized. the usb drive or pen drive boots in another desktop just fine. i need to somehow install xubuntu or crunchbang or something lite but must do it using net install. i see lots of tutorials but they are either too complicated or unknown source, like "inslux." and not too complicated of a process. I'm a "techie-tard," i guess. also, i'd like to suggest a new "sub-forum" in "distribution" forum, Called "General Distro."

I tried google and adding "NAT Traversal Mode cisco-udp" to the config file works for some people but not for me Does anyone had experience with vpnc 0.5.3 in FC11?

After installing openSUSE 11.2 to get rid of my suddenly dysfunctional 11.1, my Audigy 2 doesn't produce a single sound anymore - neither via the regular nor the digital output. It used to work like a charm on 11.1. I cannot say how much I have come to hate Linux during the past 12 months after constant problems with system instabilities due to incompatible software component updates and stuff like my system still not working after ominously going out of service and "repairing" it with openSUSE's repair function.
I decided to get into Linux because I found it cool when I started with a couple of years abo and thought it would be well worth getting into an OS that might become the successor of Windows. I also wanted an OS I felt secure with when doing online banking or shopping.
Well, I have to say that Windows 7 delivers on all the promises Linux has made (at least those that are important for me), and that Linux hasn't advanced a micrometer in the time I have started using it. The only thing in favor of Linux was that it worked well enough on my 6 year old hardware. I'd rather purchase some new hardware and Windows 7 on top of than tormenting myself more with this unspeakable PITA Linux has proven to me to be. To hell with it. Stay in your server corner, but stop telling people Linux was anywhere close to being a useful desktop operating system. PS: Yes, I have tried other distros too.
