Ubuntu :: HP Laserjet Doesn't Work With 10.04?
Jul 7, 2010
Is anyone else having problems with HP LaserJets and Ubuntu 10.04? I have a HP LaserJet 3015 and am running a dual boot with Windows 7.
Printer is automatically detected and works fine on: Windows 7, Windows XP, LinuxMint, and older versions of Ubuntu.
But when I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, when I try to print it just adds the job to the print queue and it never prints. After awhile I get a message saying that Ubuntu is unable to communicate with my printer. (or something to that effect). I can't even print a test page.
I have tried installing HPLIP following the directions given, but get the same behavior (can't communicate with the printer). I have tried unplugging the power cord and usb cable and plugging them back in (as per the directions I am following). But still not communicating.

I have tried to download the latest version of CUPS but do not know how to install it properly using command line commands above 'sudo' and 'sh', and I have tried to install HPLIP but it needs 'cups-devel' installed apparently. My Debian can see the 1020 clearly enough to identify it and give its status as idle, via the CUPS interface. When I try and print a Test page it goes to the spooler, says it is printing OK, but nothing prints. The job then disappears and appears on CUPS as completed. In the old days we would have sent a eof() to make the printer work. Have I got a bug in my HP Laserjet 1020 driver? Or am I missing the great plug-in that is not on the Synaptic Package Manager The SPM says I have HPLIP installed.

Unfortunately my usb HP LaserJet 1005 printer stopped working since 16th august. It is running under CUPS 1.3.8, with foo2zjs driver (the only one that supports laserjet 1005). I'm not sure, but this is probably related to the updates I've done recently (I don't exactly remember when I did it, but I think it was before the 16th). Here's what I've done:
Code:
# aptitude update
# aptitude dist-upgrade
As this is a home box, I haven't done that for some months, so a lot of stuff has been updated. I'm afraid some CUPS library has been updated and is now bugged, because it always worked without any problem. My question is whether or not there are known bugs on last CUPS version with hp laserjet and if there's any solution to work it out. I already tried to reinstall the printer, reboot the box, plug it to other USB port, reboot the printer, set it as default printer, and many more things. Google search didn't turn up nothing useful. The problem is not on the printer because I plugged it to my windows pc and it worked like a charm, so I'm pretty sure some stupid configuration or bug is messing arround with my printer

I've searched these forums high and low, but I can't seem to find a way to fix it. I had a similar problem in F10, but that was fixed. The problem I'm having now is a little bit different. If I open the print que before I print something like a test page, and then start printing, an item with appear in the que for a second then disappears, and the printer will do nothing. I've run out of ideas on how to get it to work, I did try to apply the original fix for my first problem since it seemed that the drivers for the Printer that were available via HP weren't quite right, but that didn't work. I tried to run -c 'yum install foo2zjs' and that didn't do anything either.

I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:

I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000

I just wanted to post here to let anyone know how to fix a broken Mic in 10.04. I have an XPS m1530 and was running RC and updating. This was a big problem since I use Skype a lot to talk to freinds and family out of country.I fixed it by removing and re-installing Alsa but this may not be a problem for people installing from the final release ISO.here are the commands you need to run
Code:
sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
sudo apt-get install gdm ubuntu-desktop

I'm converting my coworker to Linux (who loves it) and I've gotten everything working but this %$#@ printer! I've tried the various solutions posted on these forums (over the past 4 or 5 years). But none of them seem to work.Has anyone solved this problem with Lucid (10.04)? Are there some new steps that pertain to 10.04?

I've just received my hp laserjet pro m1212nf printer / fax /scanner device. It's installed as a Ethernet printer. First I had troubles with the printer. I could solve it by running
Code:
$ sudo hp-plugin
and then reinstalling the printer from the HP Device manager utility.
During the installation the tool also told me:
Code:
Unable to locate the HPLIP Fax PPD file:
HP-Fax3-hpcups.ppd.gz
Fax setup has been disabled.

I'm trying to connect Ubuntu (wubi installation on Windows) to an HP LaserJet 2100M printer via a USB cable which worked on Vista (I'm migrating away from Vista into Ubuntu).
System > Administration > Printing..I could not see or add any printer.
I searched around and followed these instructions ..
How to Install HP Printer Driver onto Ubuntu 10.10
[url]
I downloaded hplip-3.11.1.run but in following installation instructions I think I may have needlessly removed a previously installed hplip driver ..3.10.6 .. and various dependencies were loaded with these errors ..
Now when I go to System > Administration > Printing
In troubleshooting there is no connection to CUPS server. The "Add" button is no longer green as before I started dabbling. No discovered printers.
How do I start again to get HP LaserJet 2100M connected (USB cable) .. and printing?

I just tried a fresh install of ubuntu 9.04 and a new attempt for 3D acceleration with my ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 - AND IT WORKED! thanx to this guide: [URL] glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" was giving a YES and playonlinux in the terminal didn't give the usual "you don't seem to have any 3D acceleration" message. For a few minutes, my happiness was greater then ever (ehum) I installed Jedi Knight II, Jedi Outcast, and it worked. Only I couldn't adjust the screen size or the gamma (and a few other minor video settings). After some install/reinstall of playonlinux and wine I found out something: 3D acceleration didn't work any longer. glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" is now giving
direct rendering: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT set) and I get the error in Playonlinux that i don't have any 3D acceleration. I want to know how this could happen? My xorg didn't change at all. But for completeness, here it is:

I have tried all the usual stuff like: apt-get cups-pdf and similar things.
Of course I use the proper way (like sudo, etc.) The point is I can't print PDF files. Have a look at the image:
<snip>
I have also modified to the cups-pdf.conf file and have directed it to /home/{USER}/PDF And yes the aforementioned folder (i.e. PDF) exists at its proper place.
So I think the main problem is "P2POutputStream" error which you can see in the image.

or at least, it doesn't seem to. for some reason, my .txt, .doc, .rtf, and other files that shouldn't have the execute bit set often seem to (i think i know why, but that's not important). it's my understanding that this command should, for example, remove the execute bit from all .rtf files recursively (that is, from .rtf files in subdirectories too):
Code: chmod -R 666 *.rtf i've read help and the man page for chmod, and it seems that -R switch should make chmod work recursively, but it only alters files in the present working directory. could someone point out what i'm doing wrong?

I like to be able to type an em dash, so I set my right alt key to choose "third level" characters. This has worked fine until just now, I suddenly noticed it doesn't work anymore. I don't use it all the time, so I'm not sure when it stopped working, but I'm pretty sure it was working when I first clean-installed 10.04.
The last thing I installed was compizconfig-settings-manager, but after uninstalling that, it still didn't work. right now, when I press and hold right alt, it's as if the key isn't being pressed, every other key works as if nothing is pressed, whereas if I press and hold left alt, it acts like an alt key.

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. I can get to the option screen where I choose to either install or try without installing. When I choose either of these, my monitor shuts off, saying there is no signal. I've tried with a downloaded copy and an official disc from Canonical. Both end in the same result. So I went in to the 'other options' and checked the nomodeset, and then booted in. It worked and I was able to install. Install finished, I restarted, tried booting into the freshly install OS, and the monitor shuts off, again.
I can use all Ubuntu's up through 9.10, which works wonderfully. I suppose I could just stick with 9.10, but eventually it will be unsupported, right? I thought maybe my pc is just too old, but I run Windows 7 on a second hard drive and it works great.
I've even tried an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. I get the same issue. So I'm at a loss. I do wonder if it's my video card, but that doesn't make sense.
Pc info:
Motherboard: Asus
Processor: AMD FX-60 2.6 (939 socket)
Video Card: EVGA GT 240
I've had 10.04 installed with an HP/Asus motherboard of same socket(939). I had an Nvidia 7300GT video card installed.
