Fedora :: Cannot Print The Screen Anymore
Sep 12, 2009When I press the print screen button I get the activity indicator on the mouse and then nothing happens. I'm no FC10. At one time it worked, but only on my left monitor.

Hardware :: HP LaserJet 1005 Doesn't Print Anymore
Aug 18, 2010Unfortunately my usb HP LaserJet 1005 printer stopped working since 16th august. It is running under CUPS 1.3.8, with foo2zjs driver (the only one that supports laserjet 1005). I'm not sure, but this is probably related to the updates I've done recently (I don't exactly remember when I did it, but I think it was before the 16th). Here's what I've done:

As this is a home box, I haven't done that for some months, so a lot of stuff has been updated. I'm afraid some CUPS library has been updated and is now bugged, because it always worked without any problem. My question is whether or not there are known bugs on last CUPS version with hp laserjet and if there's any solution to work it out. I already tried to reinstall the printer, reboot the box, plug it to other USB port, reboot the printer, set it as default printer, and many more things. Google search didn't turn up nothing useful. The problem is not on the printer because I plugged it to my windows pc and it worked like a charm, so I'm pretty sure some stupid configuration or bug is messing arround with my printer

General :: Dell Studio 1535 Screen Resolution - System Won't Get Past The Loading Screen Anymore
Aug 4, 2010Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
Ubuntu :: Screen Does Not Lock Anymore
Aug 10, 2010my desktop cannot be locked anymore. Furthermore, after waking up from suspend, I am straight in the desktop, it does not ask me for my password anymore. The screensaver also does not activate anymore either. I'm still using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Latitude D820.

Dec 12, 2010After the latest kernel update (2.6.32-26), my computer will no longer start up with a screen resolution higher than 800x600. Before this update, my computer would sometimes startup with this problem, but this could usually be fixed with a restart (or two if necessary). At this resolution the panels and a lot of tool-bars will not display properly, so I am limited as to what I can do using the GUI.
my video card is an S3 unichrome (I think. It is built-in to the motherboard so I don't know for certain) my screen is an old ctr one I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2.6.32-26 kernel
Ubuntu :: Login Screen Doesn't Appear / Cannot Log In Anymore
Mar 24, 2011Since yesterday, Ubuntu boots into X-Windows. The violett background is there and also the mouse cursor. However, there is no login window, anymore. There is no possibility to login.I already tried something, but so far I was not succesful. I reinstalled plymouth, ureadahead and gdm. There could be a reason why my system does not work anymore. Yesterday, my root directory filled up to only 50MB free space. Now there is again 5GB.

May 26, 2010I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64-bit. I installed several updates today so it might be a bug related to that, but now when I click lock screen,it no longer fades to black like it used to,it instantly goes to black. Not a MAJOR issue but I did like the fade better. Any way to get it back, terminal command or anything?

May 7, 2011I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I like it a lot. However, there's a graphical error which started to happen after the very first bootup. The startup screen (the purple one with the 5 dots that appear) isn't showing anymore. It is replaced by some console technical guff scrolling down my screen (which isn't a problem, because Ubuntu itself works fine, but it just looks a bit rough). Again, on shutdown, it displays some amalgamated mix of more technical jargon, and a terribly lo-res version of the shutdown screen.
Is there any way I can fix this?

Mar 25, 2011i changed the boot up resolution in the boot up loader to 1366*768 (native res of my monitor) the boot option is still set to quiet splash however, instead of showing the progress bar, it would now always display the complete boot up log ( the list of starting services and such) i then manually changed the boot option from to 1024*768 at boot loader screen, and teh splash would show up, but then on next boot up if i stick with 1366*768, it doesnt work again

Dec 30, 2008I have researched this particular problem for a couple of days now, and have explored some of the suggested solutions without success, other than learning much more about Linux. I am hoping someone can offer some good advice.I am working on a kiosk right now and as part of the application, I need to disable the Print Screen keyboard button. I have used 'xmodmap' to map keycode 111 to NoSymbol, but that is not stopping the Snapshot dialog from appearing. I am using OpenSuSE 10.3 with a GNOME desktop on an IBM PC with a Logitech USB keyboard. I have tried swapping the keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard to see if that was the problem, but it was not.
The strange thing is that when I use VNC 4.1.3 Free Edition to remote into this system from another IBM PC (Windows XP Pro OS), I am able to use the xmodmap -e "keycode 111 =NoSymbol" command to successfully prevent the Snapshot dialog from appearing.Is there some kind of keyboard mapping override or shortcut mapping going on here when I am logged into the Linux box locally, but is not happening remotely?

Jul 27, 2010When installer is loading linux kernel and it goes to 100%, the next thing that I can see is black screen and can just use shut-down button. This situation appears about 90% tries. After 7 reboots I installed Suse successful but the problem appears also now. Just after select Suse in GRUB, the screen print some text about half a second and it goes black. Jul 4, 2010I want to print a single digit integer on to the screen using the int 0x80. I have loaded the number in the ecx(=5, say), size in edx (=4, lenght) and eax (=4) ebx (=1). I've added 48 to the contents of ecx, and then calling int 0x80, I thought should print 5 on the screen.
However it does not print anything. also gives no errors. I checked the contents of the ecx reg (gdb), it has 53.
A snippet showing the this will be great. I've seen snippets using the c library (printf), but I want to see how it is done using int 0x80.

Software :: CUPS - Print Jobs Shows Completed, But Page Doesn't Print?
Dec 6, 2008I initially had a problem accessing the CUPS interface (see my other post) and got that resolved by adding the user "cupsys". Now, everything "looks" ok, and when I print a test page, it shows it as completed (in CUPS). However, the page never prints.
The printer is a Canon MP600 (using the canonmp600en.ppd file to configure it). Here's the output of my conf file.

Mar 23, 2011Interesting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.
I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.

Jun 5, 2011I cannot print pdf files. I have tried using okular and xpdf. The documents display in the program, but print preview shows a blank page. The printer then sends out blank pages. I have tried printing on 2 different printers using usb cables. Using terminal to process the commands shows error:

I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?

Feb 16, 2011I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with a Laserjet 5M printer. When I attempt to print a job from Firefox or from Okular, the job never gets onto the print queue. However, I can print test pages on the printer and also print from OpenOffice, so this seems to be app-dependent. I know the jobs aren't being queued because the job number doesn't increase (as shown by the jobs for the test pages). Both Firefox and Ocular give every indication that the print job has been processed correctly.

Feb 26, 2011Not sure when CUPS started acting up. I have the latest 13.1 current software installed.The first page to print is always OK, but all succeeding pages are overwritten. The second page shows the first page on top of it, and the third shows the preceding pages on top of it - and so on. Has anyone else seen this problem?I guess the printer buffer is not getting flushed correctly. If my configurations were trashed in some way, I don't know where to look for a fix.
