Hardware :: Fake USB Stick Testing Tool?

Feb 2, 2010

I am looking for a tool or command to test a USB pen drive.

This would typically involve outputting 8GB or 4GB of data from /dev/random (for example) to the pen drive, then reading it back and checking that 4GB/8GB is read back correctly or if in fact there is any errors when writing.

Does such a command exist or can it be made?

Perhaps using dd or something similar.

I know Windows utilities exist, so it must be possible on linux!

General :: Fake Block Device For Testing LVM?

I want to test LVM+Raid. When I was testing ZFS on Solaris, I was able to create regular files, and use those as disks for testing.I tried creating a regular file full of zeros w/ dd, then partitioning that. fdisk seemed to be able to create a partition on the regular file, but mkfs and parted couldn't work with it. Is there any way to create fake block devices for testing?

Fedora :: Fake An RPM File Being Installed?

Oct 7, 2010

In some recent update, I seem to have gotten the file "libdvdread.so.3" installed in "/usr/lib" (if you want to check, the file length is 127044, and the date is Jan 27, 2008). This looks fine.

Now I have a bunch of rpm's that insist on having the package "libdvdread.so.3" and I can't fine a package that has it. How do I tell the RPM database that this file is alive and well in my system? It ought to be pretty simple, but there doesn't seem to be a simple way to do it.

Hardware :: Fake Raids Are Becoming Common \ How To Set Up

Oct 7, 2010

Fake raid hard drives are becoming more common and I am wondering how to set them up. This is what I have been told, and you are welcome to disagree (as long as we can agree to disagree). From what I have seen and heard it appears to me that to set up a fake raid in Linux you partition the separate volumes and format them, but when you install your operating system you have to go into fstab and merge the separate volumes into the root partition.

Server :: Creating A Fake ROOT DNS?

Mar 31, 2010

how to set up a fake ROOT dns that I would be using inside my virtual test environment with private address range. Basically, I want to create a ROOT server that will only contain information to two separate dns servers that are authoritative for its respective domains/zones.

I can't seem to find anything on the net about this subject. Basically, how is a ROOT server configured and how should the fake hint-file for authoritative dns-servers be configured?

I want basically domain.xx and domain.yy to be able "find eachother" by using response from ROOT server. I know I could set up forwarders to respective domain on each of the virtual DNS server instead, but I want to experiment a bit the way I stated above - with a "real" (fake) ROOT server, if it is possible!

Ubuntu :: Fake Raid STILL Can't Partition In 10.04 Installer?

Been attempting to install ubuntu on my Intel fake raid on a new PC.The installer sees the raid, but errors out:Quote:The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of Serial ATA RAID isw_ehbgbddej_Volume0 (mirror) failed. This seem to be the EXACT issue described in this bug report:I read all the way down this bug report, and at the bottom it says:Quote:Launchpad Janitor on 2010-06-25Changed in parted (Ubuntu Lucid):status: Fix Committed → Fix ReleasedA few weeks ago, a fix was "committed" and "released". I had been working with an earlier 10.04 ISO, so I downloaded 10.04 from the web site today. Still the same problem.Maybe I'm just reading the bug report wrong? If it says the fix is committed and released, I would naively assume that it is fixed. Do I need to patch to apply the fix or something? Doesn't seem likely.

Fedora Installation :: Can't Access Intel Fake Raid1

Jan 6, 2011

I have the following configuration:

2xHDD 300GB RAID1 - OS part
2xHDD 1TB RAID1 - data part.
Both arrays were created inside the bios-like setup.

During the installation of fedora I "checkboxed" only the 300GB OS raid and used it for the installation. Everything is ok with it. After installation finished and I rebooted, I tried to initialize my second RAID1, that's 1TB - I was able, it was OK, I created 1 max-size filesystem there and put some data in it. After reboot this filesystem didn't want to mount for some reason - so I commented it in fstab and to my surprise, when I reached linux - the partition for it doesn't exist!!! Here is some data:

Code:
[root@localhost ~]# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1]
md125 : active (auto-read-only) raid1 sdc[1] sdd[0]
976759808 blocks super external:/md127/0 [2/2] [UU]

[Code]....

My guess would be that I am not fully and properly initializing the second array, (it's marked as auto read only in cat /proc/mdstat) but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Ubuntu :: Correct Drivers To Work With Hardware / Fake Raid?

Aug 2, 2010

I ve got a SATA HDD which I use for storage connected to a (now quite old) RAID PCI card (HighPoint Rocket RAID 1520). Ive added another (blank) HDD, same brand and size to the PCI card. Ubuntu (10.04) can see both hard drives and access data. Id like to mirror (raid 1?) these HDDs. Looking around this forum Ive noticed quite a few people mentioning FakeRAID. Turns out that's not quite the same as software RAID. Given how cheap the 1520 was, I suspect it's FakeRAID rather than Hardware. Perhaps someone can confirm? Given Ubuntu can see both HDDs, would this mean it ll have the correct drivers to work with a hardware/fake raid? A common recommendation is to use mdadm to create a software RAID. How does this work for partitions accessed from multiple Operating Systems including Windows XP?

Ubuntu Security :: Inserting Fake Mail Via Disconnect IMAP?

Apr 1, 2011

After a April Fools' Day joke with fake mails (simply faked by forwarding & changing the text body) I tried to insert "real" fake mail into my online GoogleMail account. It was incredibly simple and that freaks me out a little.

I simply created the mail in Kontact, moved it to the folder I wanted it to appear in and synced - done. Someone with better knowledge might probably even manipulate the Kontact database on my computer and then sync, even changing old mails from years ago.

Is there a way to prevent this or find out that the mail wasn't really e.g. sent but just faked? I'm working at the university as a teaching assistant at the moment and from time to time you have those "No, I didn't miss the deadline, I send the mail with the paper to you" students. It was never necessary until now, but I always thought that I might check that by simply asking the student to show me his or her "Sent" folder in their online mail account. But that won't work if you can insert mails into your "Sent" folder via disconnected IMAP.

OpenSUSE Install :: How Installer Of 11.3 Deals With INTEL ICH10R Fake RAID0

Jul 15, 2010

I have two 150GB WD Raptors stripped in an INTEL ICH10R RAID0 array. Windows 7 is installed on it in a 100GB partition, there is a 150GB secondary partition, a 100MB system reserved partition created by Windows 7 and there is about 25GB unallocated space to install a linux distribution. My problem is the fake ICH10R RAID which does work only at the moment for me with Fedora Core 13 : Ubuntu 10.04 breaks it but i do not like FC13 very much. So i Googled and Googled for installation problems on this fakeraid and dmraid is involved there is a bug in it at least in Ubuntu 10.04 and openSUSE 11.2, with 11.3 my RAID is detected -> i have a MD RAID popup.

My question is : How to install properly 11.3 on the space left on my fake RAID array without breaking anything although i have a full backup of my system. I don't understand anything of the partitioning part of openSUSE in general. Do i must activate MD RAID, i tried once and my NTFS partitions were not displayed but RAID was detected with the correct size. I am totally lost with this installer.

OpenSUSE Install :: Fake-RADI0 Detected By Yast But Not Mounted After Restart

Apr 20, 2011

I have fake(bios) raid0 with Windows XP and third non-raid hd which I wanted use to install linux to (as I read about problems with installing grub into raid0). During installation Yast had correctly detected raids and all windows partitions (basically its divided into two raids with 2 partitions of 1st and 3 on 2nd) and even proposed mounting them at /windows/c, /windows/d and so on. Now I have OpenSuse 11.4 installed, grub at /boot on sdc but to log to system I need to use installation disc (otherwise Windows starts up). What I wanted to do is follow this tutorial to add grub to Windows bootloader: Boot Multiboot openSUSE Windows (2000, XP, Vista - any mix) with Windows bootloader. Problem is after reboot partitions are not mounted (dirs exists but nothing there) so I cannot copy boot code to windows. I read that fake raid may need special drivers but when i start Yast->system->partitions it again shows everything correctly!

fragment from partitions section in Yast (I translated/removed non-important entries as I have non-English system so it may vary from what is actually in Eng version):

Code:
Device: /dev/md125p1
Size: 48.83 GB
Device path:

[Code].....
