Fedora Installation :: Can't Access Intel Fake Raid1

Jan 6, 2011

I have the following configuration:

2xHDD 300GB RAID1 - OS part
2xHDD 1TB RAID1 - data part.
Both arrays were created inside the bios-like setup.

During the installation of fedora I "checkboxed" only the 300GB OS raid and used it for the installation. Everything is ok with it. After installation finished and I rebooted, I tried to initialize my second RAID1, that's 1TB - I was able, it was OK, I created 1 max-size filesystem there and put some data in it. After reboot this filesystem didn't want to mount for some reason - so I commented it in fstab and to my surprise, when I reached linux - the partition for it doesn't exist!!! Here is some data:

Code:
[root@localhost ~]# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1]
md125 : active (auto-read-only) raid1 sdc[1] sdd[0]
976759808 blocks super external:/md127/0 [2/2] [UU]

[Code]....

My guess would be that I am not fully and properly initializing the second array, (it's marked as auto read only in cat /proc/mdstat) but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Ubuntu Security :: Inserting Fake Mail Via Disconnect IMAP?

Apr 1, 2011

After a April Fools' Day joke with fake mails (simply faked by forwarding & changing the text body) I tried to insert "real" fake mail into my online GoogleMail account. It was incredibly simple and that freaks me out a little.

I simply created the mail in Kontact, moved it to the folder I wanted it to appear in and synced - done. Someone with better knowledge might probably even manipulate the Kontact database on my computer and then sync, even changing old mails from years ago.

Is there a way to prevent this or find out that the mail wasn't really e.g. sent but just faked? I'm working at the university as a teaching assistant at the moment and from time to time you have those "No, I didn't miss the deadline, I send the mail with the paper to you" students. It was never necessary until now, but I always thought that I might check that by simply asking the student to show me his or her "Sent" folder in their online mail account. But that won't work if you can insert mails into your "Sent" folder via disconnected IMAP.

General :: Unable To Access Intel Fake RAID 1 Array In Fedora 14 After Reboot

Jan 6, 2011

1st I am relatively new to linux (but not to *nix). I have 4 disks assembled in the following intel ahci bios fake raid arrays:

2x320GB RAID1 - used for operating systems md126
2x1TB RAID1 - used for data md125

I have used the raid of size 320GB to install my operating system and the second raid I didn't even select during the installation of Fedora 14. After successful partitioning and installation of Fedora, I tried to make the second array available, it was possible to make it visible in linux with mdadm --assembe --scan , after that I created one maximum size partition and 1 maximum size ext4 filesystem in it. Mounted, and used it. After restart - a few I/O errors during boot regarding md125 + inability to mount the filesystem on it and dropped into repair shell. I commented the filesystem in fstab and it booted. To my surprise, the array was marked as "auto read only":

[Code]...

and the partition in it was not available as device special file in /dev:

Ubuntu Security :: Encrypting Content With A Password Only - No Keys

Jun 1, 2010

What is the easiest way to encrypt plain text content with a password only? I need to encrypt client login information, but I hate dealing with all the unnecessary complexities of Linux's encryption systems.

I know I am going to get a bunch of people telling me how perfect Seahorse and whatever is, but Seahorse and the default /home directly encryption have both given me too many problems when decrypting my information. I prefer to preserve my data rather than using these methods.

Ubuntu Security :: Content Filter At Remote Locations?

Aug 6, 2010

We have approximately 100 retail locations that will have split vpn tunneling. Intranet traffic will flow over the vpn to the corporate headquarters, voip traffic will tunnel to a regional hub and internet bound traffic will go over the local isp. The retail locations are small with 1-8 users and no enterprise grade equipment (servers, etc). This setup in effect will render our current content filtering solution useless.

The locations will be equipped with Cisco ASA 5505 Firewalls. The original plan was to use a Websense server and the url filtering feature to act as a content filter. I just found out that pricing for Websense was not included in the budget will be a show stopper. There may also be some performance issues with this method. Putting a proxy server at each location is not really an option. We do not have the resources to place a server at each location, plus the users could simply unplug an inline device or go around it. There is minimal supervision at most of these locations.

Ideally, I would like to find a way to use something like Dansguardian with an ldap interface and the url filtering feature of the ASA firewalls. I found a program called n2h2p, but I can find 0 documentation for it. It is also 2 years old with no updates. I also need to be able totrally manage this as trying to keep up with 100 different configurations for 400 users would be virtually impossible for the amount of time I will have available

Ubuntu Security :: Change Permissions Of Folder's Content?

Feb 22, 2011

Recently I've tried installing Calibre from the Software Centre, but it seemed to be glitching as when I press Update Source, the 'In Progress' icon shows up, but when it finishes nothing changes - the Update Source button is still Should I report this?Anyways, I've installed Calibre from their website to .calibre in Home Folder. However, the folder is 'locked' as it requires root priveleges and I can't drop files there without being the admin. I'd like to reduce 'open as root' files to minimum, so I was wondering if there is a way to change the permissions of all the content in one operation, preferably using GUI, and not the terminal?

In addition I've noticed that other folders in my Home Folder like Pictures/Wallpapers require root privileges. This is really annoying as when I 'experiment' with Ubuntu I use Live CD to make sure I don't screw up the main system. When I do I can't open some files from hard disk because of those root inconsistencies

Security :: Iptables Configuration Causes Web Content To Be Delivered 'slow'

Apr 26, 2011

In December 2009 I switched my web-hosting package with 1and1 to their best VPS package. What a difference! At this time I knew absolutely NOTHING about Linux sys admin stuff. Now, I know a little more I now run 'several' VPS instances (all with 1and1). Back to the problem then... On all my boxes I run CentOS 5.5 (Linux 2.6.18-028stab070.4) with various different versions of Plesk (9.5.2 and 10.2.0) The VPS instances themselves are on Virtuozzo nodes. As you may know, Virtuozzo has a firewall GUI allowing modification of iptables. I only use this when I make a mistake and cannot SSH. My 'original' iptables: (the VZ chains are controlled by the Virtuozzo container)

Code:

Chain INPUT (policy DROP)
target prot opt source destination
VZ_INPUT all -- anywhere anywhere
Chain FORWARD (policy DROP)

[code]....

if this iptables chain limits the number of connections to 3 per second and 100 per second respectively, is this still secure or is there no point in having this rule? If the rule is a good one to have, then how can I allow http connections to bypass this chain/rule?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Access BBC UK Content On Desktop But Can On Laptop?

Jan 14, 2010

Earlier when installing Karmic I requested assistance to enable me to listen & view BBC content in the United Kingdom. This involved me in loading :

mozilla-mplayer,
flashplugin-nonfree,
Ubuntu restricted extras

which worked a treat.

I decided to install Karmic on an old desktop system with the intent of using it as a backup system for my data. Having installed this as a fresh install I again followed the earlier advice only to find that when I attempted to connect to the BBC I was asked to load flash. This happened no matter which station I attempted to listen or view.

As far as I can see everything has been installed exactly as on my laptop and therefore should naturally work as before. The only difference is the laptop is using 64 bit and the desktop 32. Since I now see that the desktop is also capable of 64 bit processing should installing the 64 bit Karmic help?

Using sysinfo does not give too much information. I am told that the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core processor 4400+, 1000.000 MHz & L2 cache 512. The graphic card is shown as VGA Compatible Controller and the Sound Card as a multimedia Audio Controller.

I am at a loss why I am being asked for flash on the desktop and not being able to have the same benefits as I have on my laptop running the same OS.

Fedora :: Fake An RPM File Being Installed?

This is what I have been told, and you are welcome to disagree (as long as we can agree to disagree). From what I have seen and heard it appears to me that to set up a fake raid in Linux you partition the separate volumes and format them, but when you install your operating system you have to go into fstab and merge the separate volumes into the root partition.

Server :: Creating A Fake ROOT DNS?

Mar 31, 2010

how to set up a fake ROOT dns that I would be using inside my virtual test environment with private address range. Basically, I want to create a ROOT server that will only contain information to two separate dns servers that are authoritative for its respective domains/zones.

I can't seem to find anything on the net about this subject. Basically, how is a ROOT server configured and how should the fake hint-file for authoritative dns-servers be configured?

I want basically domain.xx and domain.yy to be able "find eachother" by using response from ROOT server. I know I could set up forwarders to respective domain on each of the virtual DNS server instead, but I want to experiment a bit the way I stated above - with a "real" (fake) ROOT server, if it is possible!

Been attempting to install ubuntu on my Intel fake raid on a new PC.The installer sees the raid, but errors out:Quote:The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of Serial ATA RAID isw_ehbgbddej_Volume0 (mirror) failed. This seem to be the EXACT issue described in this bug report:I read all the way down this bug report, and at the bottom it says:Quote:Launchpad Janitor on 2010-06-25Changed in parted (Ubuntu Lucid):status: Fix Committed → Fix ReleasedA few weeks ago, a fix was "committed" and "released". I had been working with an earlier 10.04 ISO, so I downloaded 10.04 from the web site today. Still the same problem.Maybe I'm just reading the bug report wrong? If it says the fix is committed and released, I would naively assume that it is fixed. Do I need to patch to apply the fix or something? Doesn't seem likely.
