how to set up a fake ROOT dns that I would be using inside my virtual test environment with private address range. Basically, I want to create a ROOT server that will only contain information to two separate dns servers that are authoritative for its respective domains/zones.
I can't seem to find anything on the net about this subject. Basically, how is a ROOT server configured and how should the fake hint-file for authoritative dns-servers be configured?
I want basically domain.xx and domain.yy to be able "find eachother" by using response from ROOT server. I know I could set up forwarders to respective domain on each of the virtual DNS server instead, but I want to experiment a bit the way I stated above - with a "real" (fake) ROOT server, if it is possible!
I created a chroot jail in /SECURITY/Jail. But when I used the command 'sudo chroot /SECURITY/Jail' to enter the fake root, I got an error message likegroups: cannot find name for group ID 105groups: cannot find name for group ID 119.

I've just discovered that crontab is creating a new file in the root directory every time it executes a cronjob, and it doesn't erase over the old file so there are thousands of files in the root directory, they have the same name as the script file (appended with a numeral) but are all blank.here is what one of the cronjob's looks like[URL]

I've grown rather fond lately of creating tmpfs here and there to speed up various activities. (I think it is awesome that RAM can be mounted to a directory!) The downside though, is that this requires root privileges. I don't really like this because then I either have to go root each time I want a tmpfs, or I have to add a new line to fstab each time I want a tmpfs in some new, odd place. (This becomes doubly weird when the odd place is somewhere like inside my personal home directory.) Is there some other utility out there that can mount RAM as a filesystem, but allow mounting to be done without root privileges? It seems like this shouldn't be an issue, since a normal user has the ability to create and manipulate directories as well as borrow as much RAM as he wants.
I am an experienced Linux user, but have never used Salix before. I have a root account set up on my other Linux distros, but can not figure it out using Salix. The reason I want a root account in Salix because I believe in freedom of choice, and my choice always was and always will be to have a root account set up so I can login as root. I am aware of the risk involed in creating a root account.
I am using Lubuntu 10.10 and have installed my application that I need. What I need is a link to the desktop that will execute the program from the /usr/share/test directory. When I execute the program I need to use "Sudo" in order to run in. how would I add a symbolic link the desktop with the appropriate permission to run the executable without compromising security. Recently, I've tried to create a snapshot of my /root folder in 10.04 (I remember to have done so a couple of times without trouble).I used the commandHTML Code: Code: lvcreate -L10G -s -n rootsnapshot /dev/server/root Without a hint of HDD activity, Gnome (?) hangs up - I can move the mouse, and the clock is moving on, but I can't click on anything. No HDD activity, and this goes on forever (after a while, the whole system locks up). This happens each time when I try to create a snapshot.
I can cause the kernel to panic immediately with the following command. lvcreate --snapshot --name Snap --extents 100%FREE VolGroup00/LogVol00 The last line of the panic message is "<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception" If I create a snapshot of any other volume it works just fine. It only panics on LogVol00 which is my root fs.
I'm running 5.4 after update from 5.3. It didn't work with 5.3 either. This is a 32-bit guest running in VMWare Server 2.0.1 which is running on FC10 x86_64. I've tried the guest in both UP and SMP (2 cores) modes and observed no difference.
I've started to get emails that would typically come from [URL] as [URL]. These emails come from services that send out emails (backup programs) directly, or from cronjobs. I've logged in as the non-root account and either sudo su - or su - to root and the restart the service at one point or another. If I login directly as root and bounce the service or cron the emails come across as from root. I don't see anything in my environment variables after I su to indicate what would cause this. I'm not sure where else to look? A pam setting? This seems to have happened between Fedora 10 and 14 (did a bunch of overdue upgrades recently) I've only got Fedora so I don't have anything to compare to. In Fedora 10 I did not have this problem.
I like having my terminal transparent, but real transparency makes the text unreadable if it overlaps with other stuff. I usually have compiz turned off so that I can use fake transparency. Is there some way to do this with compiz on, so I can have the wobbly windows?
In some recent update, I seem to have gotten the file "libdvdread.so.3" installed in "/usr/lib" (if you want to check, the file length is 127044, and the date is Jan 27, 2008). This looks fine.
Now I have a bunch of rpm's that insist on having the package "libdvdread.so.3" and I can't fine a package that has it. How do I tell the RPM database that this file is alive and well in my system? It ought to be pretty simple, but there doesn't seem to be a simple way to do it.
Fake raid hard drives are becoming more common and I am wondering how to set them up. This is what I have been told, and you are welcome to disagree (as long as we can agree to disagree).From what I have seen and heard it appears to me that to set up a fake raid in Linux you partition the separate volumes and format them, but when you install your operating system you have to go into fstab and merge the separate volumes into the root partition.

I have a lifttime premium account at Megaupload.com. Recently I found that megaupload has blocked all IPs in my area. I want to test LVM+Raid. When I was testing ZFS on Solaris, I was able to create regular files, and use those as disks for testing.I tried creating a regular file full of zeros w/ dd, then partitioning that. fdisk seemed to be able to create a partition on the regular file, but mkfs and parted couldn't work with it. Is there any way to create fake block devices for testing?
I am looking for a tool or command to test a USB pen drive.
This would typically involve outputting 8GB or 4GB of data from /dev/random (for example) to the pen drive, then reading it back and checking that 4GB/8GB is read back correctly or if in fact there is any errors when writing.
Does such a command exist or can it be made?
Perhaps using dd or something similar.
I know Windows utilities exist, so it must be possible on linux!

2xHDD 300GB RAID1 - OS part 2xHDD 1TB RAID1 - data part. Both arrays were created inside the bios-like setup.
During the installation of fedora I "checkboxed" only the 300GB OS raid and used it for the installation. Everything is ok with it. After installation finished and I rebooted, I tried to initialize my second RAID1, that's 1TB - I was able, it was OK, I created 1 max-size filesystem there and put some data in it. After reboot this filesystem didn't want to mount for some reason - so I commented it in fstab and to my surprise, when I reached linux - the partition for it doesn't exist!!! Here is some data:

I am running 2.2.4 and CentOS 5.3 (RHEL 5.3 clone). I have two Ethernet cards: eth0 and eth1. Eth1 is connected to the Internet; eth0 is connected to all my virtual machines; iptables connects eth1 to eth0.
A new machine I am adding needs to be off eth0 and eth1 (security reasons). Question: is there a way to make up a third fake Ethernet card that I do not physically have (eth2) and assign it to my new VM? How do I do this? Can I get away with some thing like this?

The last weeks i have searched the internet for a server appilication like LogmeIn. A tool that will allow remote access, even if you are behind a Firewall or proxy. Your screen will be send out to my server, that will send it on to me. There has gotto be some free or opensource server tool for this? If there is no server appilication, how much will it costs to create such a program?
