Hardware :: Dell Precision T7400 Can't See 2TB Drive In BIOS
Oct 1, 2010
We have a RHEL5 box with a 2.6.18 kernel up and running (no RAID in use, but the SAS controller is enabled in the BIOS). To expand the storage, we bought a 2TB drive to add to the machine. Currently the setup is like this:
SATA-0 => DVD-rom
SATA-1 => DVD-rom
SATA-2 => empty
HD-0 => old hard disk
HD-1 => old hard disk
HD-2 => new 2TB drive
HD-3 => empty
The BIOS doesn't seem to have any way to list the drive on any of the HD ports, only the SATA ports, so I'm not sure if the drive is being recognized or not. fdisk -l doesn't seem to recognize the 2 TB drive.
I'm going to try reordering the drive ports and try the drive in another machine, but I'm baffled here...

I met a weird problem when I try to install the new memory to my Dell T7400. The computer is installed ubuntu 9.10, 64 bit version and 8 G memory. I got extra 8 G memories, and installed them on the machine. But the problem is ubuntu does't recognize the new memories, but the BIOS does. I switched the position of the new memories with some old memories, but it turns out the old memories also can not be recognized by the system. I got some memory information by using cat /proc/meminfo

I've been configuring a kickstart installation of Fedora 14, and everything was working fine on a slightly older Dell Precision 490. The machines we're actually going to use, are Dell Precision T7400, and when I tried on thoseit had some issues with the SAS controller, and is unable to see the hard drive in the machine. I get the following error (see attached dmesg output for more details):
Code:

I am looking to install Linux on a Dell Precision 340 with unpartitioned 17G (scsi) disk space available.
It is a 4-5 year old workstation with Nvidia Quadro2 MXR/EX video controller.
It has a Windows XP Pro installed on the primary partition.
Which OS should I download and install?
Is the X86-64bit CentOS 5.3 an option?

So I bought a used Dell Precision 390 Workstation and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on it. Everything seems to work fine, except for the built-in network card. Well, the graphics don't really work right, either, but I rather expected that, and I'll get to it later.
Anyway, when I boot Ubuntu and try to get on the internet, it says I'm not connected. When I open Network Tools, in the "Devices" tab, I get three Network device options: Loopback Interface, Ethernet Interface (eth0), and Unknown Interface (pan0). When I click on the ethernet device option, it shows me the hardware address of the interface, that it has multicast enabled, and that it is "Active", but I get no IP address.
Is there something really stupid that I'm missing? Do I need to do something special the first time I hook up an ethernet cable? I don't seem to remember having to do that on other Ubuntu boxes.

I am trying to get RHEL4.7 work fully on a dell precision t1500. Everything is working fine except for the sound card. in the specifications it says it has an "integrated High Definition Audio (Rev 1.0 Specification) implemented with a two-chip audio solution comprised of the ADI 1984a High Definition Audio CODEC and the ICH10's integrated AC97/High Definition digital controller"
RHEL4.7 can not detect the soundcard. running system-config-soundcard return no sound devices were found.
lspci returns the following:

I have problems with my laptop which runs well until it decides to freeze and it either shuts down or I have to turn it off. After I restart the system there is no hdd check to signal that something really wrong happened. I suspect the nVidia driver for the Quadro FX 770M video card is responsible but I am not sure. Also, firefox sometimes runs sluggish (maybe flash is causing something to overcharge?) and often times the computer freezes when I am using firefox. The funny thing is that all my heavy simulations are not causing problems and often times they use 10GB of swap with no complains. When the laptop freezes I see two keyboard lights flashing intermittently. How can I figure out what is going on? I mean are there any log files where I can look for something or can I setup a log procedure to detect the cause of this problem?

Actually, the title I was looking for was Belkin Gigabit Ethernet ExpressCard not seen on Dell Precision M6500 with CentOS 5.5 _when system boots with no link on this card_. When I boot this system with a cable connected to the Ethernet port, the card shows up (dmesg, lspci 0e:00.0 and ifconfig). When I boot it with nothing connected, it's like it doesn't exist. I know I could make it work with a loopback plugged in at all times, but am looking for a more graceful solution. Here are messages logs from when it's recognized
Jul 19 15:14:23 mss kernel: sky2 driver version 1.22
Jul 19 15:14:23 mss kernel: sky2 0000:0e:00.0: v1.22 addr 0xf6afc000 irq 193 Yukon-2 EC rev 2
Jul 19 15:14:23 mss kernel: sky2 eth0: addr 00:00:5a:11:45:5b

Update: Should have been a little clearer - this card has the Marvell Yukon chipset. I'm trying to identify the part number without ripping out the casing.

I have recently installed Centos. During the installation, I noticed that only sound was being tested during the installation. Once everything has been installed successfully. I can run Centos with no problem. However, when I tried to switch from one window (browser) to another. The display was slow. Thus, I suspected the driver for the graphic card of my PC is not being installed successfully. When I type /sbin/lspci | grep VGA in the terminal, I get the following output:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 06fd (rev a1)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 06fd (rev a1)
Then, I went to the dell support & driver site to download the driver. In the readme file, it is suggested to install dkms first before installing the graphics driver by typing rpm -ivh dkms-2.1.0.1-1.noarch.rpm
I managed to install the dkms without any error.However, when I use rpm to install the graphics driver as suggested by the readme file:
rpm -ivh dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64.rpm
I get the following errors: error: Failed dependencies:
libX11.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64
libXext.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64[code]....
Since the above errors may be related to the missing packages then I use yum provides and install to find the missing packages. Even I try to install all the matched packages, i still cant install the driver for my graphic card. To be honest, i am not very sure whether I am doing the right things or not. how to solve this slow display problem when switching from one application to another.

When I run the openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-x86_64.iso from an usb stick and select "Installation" or "openSUSE Live (GNOME)" the screen goes to black after showing the load bar for a while.
This is most likely a graphics driver issue but I have no idea how to fix it.
This happens on a dell precision M4500. The same usb stick works fine on another machine.

I installed REL 5.5 on this Dell laptop (originally win 7) and everything works ok except when i get to the login GUI the LCD brightness (or lack of) sets to it's lowest so i have to click the f5 button to brighten the screen. If I log out, the LCD resets to the dimmest setting (can hardly make out the login GUI) and again I have to click on f5. I believe I need to update the BIOS but I don't know how. The BIOS update I dound on-line if a xxx.exe file.

For anyone reading this I was wondering if there is a way for me to change the dell bios splash screen to another picture, like Tux the penguine or something like that.I've seen alot of people say not to do this due to the editing of the bios and the probability of crashing your system.I was wondering if there was a safe and easy process for doing this???

I have a dell inspiron 530 desktop with core 2 quad and 4GB memory, running 32bit vista and 64 bit fedora 10. I searched on the web with "can I install 8GB memory on dell inspiron 530", and got couple of articles that says I only needed a bios upgrade.I downloaded bios version 1.0.18 from dell and run that in Windows to replace bios 1.0.12.After it said upgrade successful and asked me whether I wanted to reboot to have the new bios taking effect, and I said yes. And it shutdown the computer, and never came up Now, when power up, I see nothing, not even the "F2 to setup, F12 to boot menu" message, much less the grub selection. Is there a way to revive the computer?

I have a Dell Vostro with sda and sdb (the latter was installed by myself). I installed FC14 x86 64 onto sdb with /boot being on /dev/sdb8
I did not want to install grub onto /dev/sda as this is a shared machine. I thought that I would be able to use the BIOS's 'select boot device' to select the sdb disk and boot off that and get into FC that way.
fdisk verifies that /dev/sdb8 is marked as bootable and grub (via find /grub/stage1) confirms that it is installed on hd1,7 (ie /dev/sdb8)
However, no matter which hd is choosen as the boot device, Windows is always booted - I change the boot order to use: DVD, sdb, sda but it still boots Windows. It seems like the BIOS only wants to boot sda no matter what.

Hardware is a Supermicro with C2SBC-Q board, have set up a RAID1 with 3 WD drives, the BIOS "sees" the "LightScribe" DVD drive but it is not being recognized by CentOS (5.2 x86_64). It's on an IDE bus, set to "master".# dmesg | grep -E 'CD|DVD|hdc' produces a new prompt with NO feedback, BTW.I have CentOS 5.2 i386 running on this machine with the same DVD drive, it was not an issue.

I have a working F-10 box with an older motherboard (pre-sata). The p-ata ports are full (4 drives), so I'm trying to add a sata controller and another drive. The sata controller plugs into the pci bus, but is not detected by the bios (very old). After booting, the OS loads the driver module(s) and detects the new controller and drive. I was able to add the new sata drive into the LVM system using system-config-lvm. All was fine until I rebooted.
I get pages of lvm errors and booting fails. It looks like it's trying to mount the volumes before the sata controller is modprobed. Is there a way to get the os to modprobe for the new controller before trying to mount? The extra drive space is on a data partition, not the boot partition.

The brand new MEMOREX 24X Lightscribe DVD player(SATA) is not detected by my UBUNTU 10.10 install (via USB stick LiveCD install). I know it should have worked out-of-the box, but it does not, dmesg or lshw command shows all other SATA connections ( 2 hard drives) , BUT the DVD Drive. The DVD drive is detected by the MSI BIOS, it is also fully functional in the dual-booted Windos 7 installation next to the Ubuntu 10.10, so I know the DVD player is ok. I have the latest B3 Stepping MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard with Intel i7 2600K cpu.

I have an HP motherboard w/P4 with 40 GB disk another Maxtor 500GB Hard disk on the usb. Problem: On start up with device selection for booting, my pen drive always gets listed as USB HDD0 and USB HDD1 and Iam able to boot thru' them. However my Maxtor HDD in the first partition of which I have installed FC 13 after much pain,so as to not disturb my existing installation FC 11 in internal drive. This device itself is not visible, nothing to have to say about its partitions in bios list of devices to select. Whether this is a drive related problem or bios related. How may I make it visible in bios list.
Further note: Fedora core 13 installation didn't worry about the windows XP and Fedora 11 installation in main drive. It allowed for installation of the individual boot loader in the installation drive itself.
Bios not recognising this drive precluded access at boot from grub.conf of the exising FC 11 installation too.

My CD-DVD drive have suddenly stop working in my laptop and when I've checked the BIOS setup I've seen that the drive is no longer recognized by BIOS (there is no option for this drive so I can't enable it). I don't know what CD-DVD drive I have (since I can gather information about it because it's not recognized by my laptop) but I think it's a Matshita CD-DVD driver. I use Ubuntu 10.04. Do you know how to make it work again?

Quick background: I've always had problems with Ubuntu on my external hard drive, but I think it's actually with grub in Gnome - any Gnome. I had Karmic installed until after grub upgraded and a bootloader error made it impossible to log in, so I went over to PCLOS KDE.
I've missed Ubuntu and really wanted Lucid, so I tried reinstalling it to the external. Same problem. I tried PCLOS Gnome, and, yep, same - though I could reinstall the KDE version no problem. Anyway, after umpteen attempts, which included formatting the external drive in Windows (which doesn't ever recognise the external in My Computer till I do), letting Ubuntu do the partitioning, doing the partitioning myself, I finally tried to install through Windows via Wubi - still to the external drive.
It failed, and now the drive is not recognised in the BIOS, Ubuntu, or Windows (I've now installed a dual Ubuntu-Windows boot on my internal). Have I stuffed up my external drive? Is there some way I can make it recognisable (changing BIOS settings???). Do I need to supply more information?
